A Successful HarvestFEST It was a beautiful night and wonderful gathering of parishioners and friends last Saturday as we celebrated our first HarvestFEST. The food was great – I love those Filipino egg rolls – and the atmos-phere was friendly and easy going, like a family get-together. The kids were having a ball just playing freely on the grounds. It was just simply nice to spend the evening in a relaxed setting appreciating what a blessing our community can be. It will take awhile to tally the proceeds and pay our expenses, but without a doubt HarvestFEST was a success. And if you weren’t there, you missed something good. Blessing the Bells We will launch of Sesquicentennial Jubilee Year next Saturday night, October 12th, at 5:00pm when Bishop George Rassas pre-sides over the blessing and dedication of our new church bells. We will begin our celebration outdoors where after blessing the bells, Fr. John Hoffman, an alumnus of St. Mary (Diantha Hall is named after his mother) will activate the original bell of 1867. After the Marian Bell starts to toll, the three new bells will be set in motion to produce a glorious sound that from this day forward will call the faithful to worship and mark the Angelus hours at noon and 6:00pm. This is a rare opportunity, an historic moment, a most memorable occasion! So make every effort to be present for this wonderful occasion. We have prepared a prayer card with the words of the Angelus printed on it. I’m encouraging all of us to pick up the traditional prac-tice of stopping at noon and at 6:00pm to pray the Angelus. It is both a Marian prayer and a prayer the honors the Incarnation – the Word of God becoming flesh among us. Praying the Angelus helps us to remember that the living Christ is present among us. You will also become familiar with a 9:00pm ringing of the bells. This last ring of the day is traditionally called the De Profundis. The meaning is that we honor our beloved dead with this last tolling of the bells each night. I hope that you will come to hear the bells as a call to prayer and as a beautiful way of praising God in the unique sound of the bells.

Sesquicentennial Calendar Our Sesquicentennial is not a one day celebration but a year long celebration – a true Jubilee – a time of grace. Our Sesquicentennial committee has prepared a full calendar of events for the coming year. I’m hoping you will see this Jubilee Year not simply as a look to the past, but as a time of thanksgiving, a time for faith renewal, a time to recommit ourselves to the mission of Jesus. It’s up to each one of us to make this Jubilee Year a fruitful time in our lives. The calendar of opportunities has been designed to be an invitation to be more engaged in our faith and more intentional about our rela-tionship to our brother and sister parishioners. Our Catholic faith is personal but it is also communal by its nature. Our Catholic par-ishes aren’t intended to be impersonal spiritual service stations as if they were some kind of consumer agency handing out bits of holi-ness. We are Church together. We form the body of Christ, a sacra-ment in the world, commissioned to tell good news, heal wounds, announce hope, mercy and compassion. This is what our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has been trying to say ever since he as-sumed the office of Peter. Pope Francis’ words have been catching the attention of the press and of many people world-wide. But his words will just remain words unless we take advantage of opportu-nities like this Sesquicentennial to get re-charged, to be more inten-tional about our faith, to make a commitment to one another to be that telling sign of hope in the world. When you get your hands on a Sesquicentennial calendar don’t treat it like just another advertising flyer. Take the calendar and see it as your invitation to a new beginning in the ways of faith. Don’t just make God a part of your life; make God the center of your life. Don’t just say you go to St. Mary’s; but be St. Mary’s, making the parish community your spiritual family and home. As we move through our Sesquicentennial Year we’ll have to listen carefully for what God may be telling us, how he might be directing us into the future. Let this Jubilee Year be a time of great joy and spiritual rediscovery. Fr. Ron Lewinski

PADS Ministry Fall is in the air and that means St. Mary PADS ministry is gearing up for a new season. We look forward to welcoming our guests beginning in October and finishing in April. Our ministry includes many dedicated volunteers, but we are always looking for fresh faces and ideas. If you feel that PADS is something you would be interested in, call the parish office for details. We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities beginning at 6:00PM Wednesday evenings and finishing at 6:00AM on Thursday. We are always looking for help with early morning cleanup at 5:00AM and cleaning laundry. Please let us know if you want to join our team. We welcome eighth grade and high school volunteers, we will have a limit of 6 youth volunteers this season, due to the limited space at our site. Please call the parish office if you plan on using the PADS ministry for your service hours. Thank you for your cooperation. Please keep our volunteers and our guests in your prayers.

Sharing Parish Corner We’re Having Another Bicycle Roundup

In conjunction with our Sharing Parish (Most Blessed Trinity) in Waukegan, our St. Mary Sharing Parish Ministry will be holding a used bicycle “Roundup” on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 9:00 a.m.

until 1:00 p.m. in front of Gabriel House (across the street from the Little Church). Please consider donating any adult bicycles that you may be thinking of disposing of. Although these bikes can certainly have been pre-ridden, they should be in working order or need very little work to get them in riding condition. Bikes without seats, handle-bars, brakes, wheels (major components) cannot be accepted. This is the fourth year our Sharing Parish Ministries will be conducting this “Bicycle Roundup.” All of the bicycles will be given to the Holy Family Food Pantry (a main charitable endeavor of Most Blessed Trinity Parish). The donated bicycles, after being refurbished will be given to residents in the Waukegan/North Chicago/Zion area who have no other means of transportation to get them to work, to school, or to area shopping. In the last four years 500 bicycles have been distributed by the Food Pantry. Many more people are on the “waiting list.” Christ said, “Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.” Please be generous and consider bringing your pre-ridden bikes to the “St. Mary-Most Blessed Trinity Bicycle Roundup.” Contact Deacon Gary Kupsak at (847) 726-2553 or at kup-

[email protected] with any questions regarding this program.

GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

We listened to Angela Bujan remind us that each of us has a different gift to share and we will find it if we look inside and can then share it with the world. Our $770 donation of will be given to Home of the Sparrow in McHenry, which supports homeless women by providing shelter and job training to create self-sufficiency and maintaining a personal budget. Thank you once again to all who set up tables, cleaned up, washed dishes, played music, sang, arranged flowers and made favors. It would not have been possible without all of you. Gratefully, Kathleen Arata, Amy Heinzinger and the Ladies’ Tea Committee

Spiritual Garden We are happy to announce that two initial plots were cleared for our new St. Mary's Spiritual Garden. Pumpkin seeds have been planted to bless the land and offer a symbol for the future food we hope to produce. As

Church we help one another cultivate the fruits of the Spirit within our hearts and within our community. By planting God's word, shedding light on Jesus' teachings, quenching our hunger and thirst at the alter, and harvesting our gifts, we grow in union with the Divine and one another. More information will follow in the coming months about how anyone may involved in planning and implementing our first harvest.

In celebration of the rich heritage of St. Mary of the Annunciation parish and to further commemorate the Sesquicentennial Year, we are gathering recipes and compiling a new Parish Cookbook. It is our sincere hope that all parishioners will add their favorite recipes to this book. And to help make this as easy as possible, we have two ways for you to submit your recipes. 1. Use the on-line program by following these simple steps:

Go to: www.typensave.com Click on: Login Username: STMOTA Password: Mary150

2. Pick up a form from the narthex kiosk for submitting your

handwritten recipes. Please return to the parish office, marked "Cookbook Recipe."

Ordering information will be made available soon! If you have questions or need assistance with submitting your recipes, please contact Meredith Cunningham at (630) 209-4560 or [email protected] Thank you for your contribution to this historic cookbook!

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak

“Burned Biscuits” When I was a kid, my immediate family didn’t have a great many recurring or weekly traditions. But one of them

that I vividly remember was having a fried chicken dinner every Sun-day at about 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. At one Sunday “chicken feast” my mom burned (and burned very badly) the biscuits that were a regu-lar part of that dinner. When she set out the plate of what looked something like small “hockey pucks,” my dad simply smiled, took one and asked me to pass the butter. When we got up from the table that afternoon, I remember hearing my mom apologize profusely to all of us for burning the biscuits. I remember my dad saying, “Harriett, don’t you know just how much I love things ‘well done.” That night while my dad was completely absorbed in watching “wrestling” on our very tiny black and white television, I went to kiss him goodnight before I went to bed. I asked him if he really liked the incinerated biscuits he ate for dinner. He hugged me, put me in a full-nelson and said, “a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone.”

You know, life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people, of “burned biscuits.” And although I don’t like to admit it, I’m not the “best” at hardly anything. I forget birthdays and anniversaries and at times my pride gets in the way and I say things that I later regret, just like every-one else. What I have learned over the years is that being able to ac-cept each other’s faults and failures and then choosing to celebrate each other’s short comings and differences is one of the most impor-tant keys to creating healthy, growing and lasting relationships. And having a strong and lasting relationship with our family, friends, co-workers, fellow parishioners, and most importantly with our God, is a foundational piece to living a happy and blessed life, no matter how disappointed we at times may be in others and in ourselves.

My prayer for us today is that we will all learn to accept the good, the bad, the pretty and the not so pretty parts of our lives and in the lives of others. So when the thought of biting into that burned biscuit troubles us to no end, that we may have the moral character to lay those troubling thoughts at the feet of our ever caring God and Father, and He will, in his infinite love and mercy, give us the strength to eat hardily. Because in the end, our Almighty and every merciful Lord is the only One who will be able to bless our relationships, every single one of our life’s relationships, where a burned biscuit isn’t such a very big deal.

“Don’t put the key to happiness in someone else’s pocket, keep it in your own.” Accept the imperfections of life in yourself and of people around you. And please, will you pass me a biscuit, a burned one will do just fine. PEACE BE WITH YOU.

Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

“Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was com-manded? So should it be with you. When you have done all

you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" (Luke 17:10) Mark Twain once said, “Most people are bothered by those Scrip-ture passages which they cannot understand. But for me, the passages in Scripture which trouble me most are those which I do understand.” This is one of those passages that I do under-

stand and, frankly, these words of Jesus scare the heck out of me. And, I think, they should scare you, too. Too often we approach our faith from a perspective of “What’s the least I have to do to get by?” We think and act as if we can fool and appease God by tossing him a few bones through occasional snippets of ritual action and lip service. And that we will be rewarded with a gold medal for doing so! Yet, there is nothing “least” or minimalist about God. His way is all about totality and completeness. We should not be deluded about our deserving any reward or pat on the back from God. God is a God of Love and Mercy…and a God of Expectations. We should not expect that we will be feted for doing our duty, any more than we would throw a party for one of our children when they complete a homework assignment on time or actually put their dirty clothes in the laundry room. It’s more likely we would react by saying “Whoop-de-doo. You finally did what you were supposed to.” We cannot pride ourselves on fulfilling our base obligations, especially when we so often fall short and give them minimal time & effort. Today’s Gospel challenges us to ask ourselves where we REALLY stand in our relationship with God. Do we simply go through the mo-tions and give superficial attention to our Heavenly Father? Do we just maintain good appearances and observe the necessary rituals of our religion? Do we simply talk a good game? Or are we in intimate love with Father, Son and Spirit, a relationship which drives every aspect of our lives from our thoughts to our words to our actions? Are we spending choice portions and generous amounts of our time, talent and resources on the work of the Gospel? Do we recognize how “unprofitable” we really are? Just going to Mass on Sundays (as we have been commanded to do) while living in a way that does not embody the Gospel the other 6 days and 23 hours of the week is not truly living with the robust faith that is needed to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. These are not “either-or” choices; they are “both-and” obligations. To be clear, we cannot earn our way into heaven by collecting points for our good deeds. All we can do is accept the gift of salvation which God freely offers us by having faith. Such faith is not simply the intellectual acceptance of certain truths; rather, true faith takes control not only of our minds but of our hearts, words and actions as well. It is a total and complete handing over of our whole selves to God. Faith is not a one-time state-ment of belief, but a continuously-lived pattern. Most of us (myself included) hold something back. We don’t put all our chips in the game. We cut corners and compromise on the demands. We tell ourselves things like “I go to Mass some/many/all Sundays.” “I give a few bucks to charities at Christmastime.” “I help the parish with ministry xxxxxxx.” “I’m basically a decent guy/gal.” In short, we con-vince ourselves that, while we may not be doing the will of the Father

exactly, we’re doing “good enough” and are satisfied with that. Yet, there is nothing simply “good enough” or minimalist when it comes to God. His way is all about totality and completeness. Christ’s words should scare us and rouse us from our delusional self-satisfaction and complacency. For in truth, we don’t even have faith the size of a teeny-tiny speck of a mustard seed. When I take an hon-est look in the proverbial spiritual mirror, I am only too aware of the many times when my thoughts and actions fall short of the Father’s will. Of the times when I hold back and cut corners because I don’t want to inconvenience myself. Of the times when my plans (or lazi-ness) take precedence over the needs of others, over my obligations to God and the Gospel. I have no claim on any sort of reward or any basis for self-congratulatory pride. Moved by the clear statement of God’s expectations in today’s Gospel, may you and I embrace more deeply our obligations – out of love for God and out of gratitude for all He has done for us. May our thoughts, words, actions and priorities clearly show that there is nothing simply “good enough” or minimalist when it comes to our relationship with God. After all, His way is all about totality and completeness. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

St. Mary Lecture Series

Three Faiths, One Place: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Holy Land

Presented by Fr. Thomas A. Baima, S.T.D

Thursday, October 10, 2013 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Parish Center Meeting Rooms

Judaism, Christianity and Islam are collectively known as "Abrahamic religions" because they each understand their history as related to the covenant God made with Abraham. These three faiths are all mono-theistic, which means they believe in one God worshiped by Abraham. They do, however, differ in important aspects of their beliefs. The Middle East is the cradle of the world's three monotheistic faiths: Ju-daism, Christianity and Islam. Today, all three religious groups have roots, communities, and holy sites in Israel, West Bank and Jordan. Pilgrims continue to visit the Holy Land to connect with sites from the origin of their faith. In this evening presentation, learn more about these three world faiths, their history and connection to the Holy Land.

World Mission Sunday October 20, 2013

The Second Vatican Council emphasized in a special way how the broadening of the boundaries of faith belongs to every baptized person and all Christian communities. It is up to us to witness Christ before the nations. Pope Francis is telling us on World Mission Sunday that our apostolic commitment is not complete unless we bear witness to Christ before the nations and before all people.

WHAT IS YOUR TALENT? Can you teach a child to read?

Are you a plumber or carpenter?

Do you have time to mentor a child?

Visit the lonely?

Perhaps you were a farmer who knows how to plow, sow or reap?

Can you make a monetary donation to a Mission Project?

Are you looking for a way to get involved?

Offer a prayer for success of the Missions and people involved?

Time to examine where your talents lie and put them to use servicing God? We’ll have that opportunity for you to explore on Mission Sun-day. Please stop in the narthex after the masses.

On Mission Sunday we will have several different missions for you to browse in the narthex. Maybe you have a day, several weeks or a year. Please join us and find out how you can serve “your neighbor” in Lake County, within the United States and International. We hope to be up and running on the website very soon for you to browse. We are starting this during our Sesquicentennial year and with prayers and service it is our hope that it will be a continuing evangeli-zation at St. Mary for future generations. Will you answer the call as Isaiah did when The Lord said, “Whom shall I send? And he answered “Here I am! Send me!” If you can help please contact Veronica Hertel at [email protected] or 847-812-9111.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusa-lem, in all Judea, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

Youth Ministry 6th Annual Night at Richards Corn Maze!! Back by popular demand, on Sunday October13th, join us for an evening of fun in the fall when we head to Richardson Farm & Corn Maze in Spring Grove, IL. Richardson Farm is home to the World’s Largest Corn Maze, but don’t let the size scare you.

The maze is designed in sections of smaller mazes so you can do as much as you want and then get out easily. Finding all the checkpoints is the real challenge! Solving the corn maze is a wholesome, country adventure that you’re sure to enjoy. There’s nothing quite like finding your way through the mazes with flashlights or the light of the moon under the starry sky and after, toasting marshmallows over a bonfire and making s’mores. This event is open to both middle school and high school teens. Four other adults are needed to help chaperone for free. We will depart in a school bus from our church Sunday at 6:30 PM and arrive back around 10:30 PM. Dress appropriately for the weather, and remember there is no school the next day in observance of Columbus Day. Space is limited, so reserve your spot now by emailing [email protected]! Teens need to have the new per-mission form on file for the 2013-2014 school year. You will receive an email with the form after you register. Please bring your completed permission form with $25 and meet in the narthex by 6:15 PM to check in on Sunday October 13th.
