PARENTS’ REFLECTIONS Bliss relaunches Going Home Pack Kellie Stewart Available online 11 August 2010 After a very successful first 12 months, special care baby charity Bliss has revised and updated it’s Going Home Pack for families of premature and sick babies and have funding to continue its distribution to neonatal units around the country. Funded by Pampers, Abbott Ltd and Foresters Friendly Society, the new packs have been deliv- ered to units. We had an extremely positive response to the pack last year as it was the first time that families of sick and premature babies were given a specific pack when taking their baby home. We asked parents and health professionals for their feedback and over two thirds of parents found the pack helpful. Some comments included, “Excellent and useful”, “Very practical way of receiving infor- mation”, one mum also said it made her feel like a ‘normal mum’. Health professionals, when asked how useful the pack was for parents on a scale of 1e5 (5being very helpful), 91 per cent rated it 4 or 5. The 2010 Going Home Pack contains a range of booklets; such as breastfeeding, weaning, and new for this year, the pack now includes our Common winter illnesses booklet. The pack also holds information on all of Bliss’ family support services as well as vouchers and discounts from selected Bliss partners. The main booklet, Going home e the next big step, can be referred to for general information. The booklet then directs parents to other more specific subjects, including financial advice and support for dads. Carmel Bartley, Bliss’ Family Support Manager, says: “Before we launched this pack last year, there was nothing like it available. Parents need all this information and we can now provide it through one excellent resource, one that also helps parents celebrate the fact that their baby is finally coming home after days, weeks or even months spent on a unit.” If your baby is preparing to leave special care, ask your unit about the Going Home Pack or for more information call Bliss’ Family Support Help- line on Freephone 0500 618140 or visit our website, www.bliss.org.uk.
