Why was Florida not part of this group?


Florida became a British colony in 1763 (Spain traded Florida for the port of Havana, Cuba). The colonists in Florida were generally happy to be ruled by Britain. However, after the Revolutionary War, Spain invaded Florida again and won it back from the British!

Why did the 13 colonies unite?Why did the 13 colonies unite?

There were many squabbles but the colonists did share certain characteristics These included:

• The absence of a titled, hereditary aristocracy; • A widespread distribution of land; • An unprecedented degree of ethnic and religious diversity;• Broad eligibility to vote (50 to 75 % of adult white males),

In contrast to Britain the colonists thought of the members of parliament as representatives of the people, accountable to their constituents and obligated to follow public instructions.

Certain shared economic grievances:e.g. Dependence on British and Scottish financial agents.

Sharing anti-Catholicism proved to be an important elementin an emerging American identity.

What were reasons to remain independent states?

INTERCOLONIAL DISPUTES

• Rapid population growth within the colonies resulted in Conflicts over colonial boundaries.

• Conflicts over issues of representation, taxation, Indian policy, . . . .and the slow establishment of governmental institutions.

ETHNIC REASONS:• Many backwoods residents were Scotch-Irish or German in descent.• They deeply resented the Anglo-American establishment.

LANDOWNERSHIP

• Conflict also surged periodically in areas where wealthy proprietors owned substantial amounts of land.
