According to a Spring 2009 BlogHer study:

• 72M US women online• 42M are participating

in social media (SoMe) activity per week– Social networking:

Facebook, LinkedIn– Blog activity: blogging

(writing a post on their own site), commenting on a blog, reading blogs

– Message boards and forums– Micro-blogging: Twitter

• Of the 42M US women, 55% (23M) are participating in blog activity

• What are Widgets?– Sometimes known as a plug-in

or an app– Self-contained piece of code

that a developer creates for a specific function

– User does not need to know the back-end of it to use the widget

• What kind of widgets exist?– Graphics - create banners,

images– Entertainment - TV listings,

daily quotes, games– Social - links or “boxes” to

FB, Twitter, RSS Reader– AV - stream YouTube right on

your blog, Flickr slideshow– Gadgets - hit counter,

weather, calendar, Google Analytics, AdSense

• Blog participation includes:– Writing – Reading – Commenting

• RSS Feed Readers– “Really Simple Syndication”– Consolidates all of your

favorite [bookmarked] blogs into one window

– Decreases the time it takes for you to type in the URL or to see if there is new content on blogs

– Con: You may miss the uniqueness of the blogs’ designs because this is essentially a feed - only reporting on the content
