CALFORNIA,PA- Quarterback Dan Latorre hit Cory Stiger with a four-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds left to play to lift the sixth-ranked Huskies over 17th-ranked Califor-nia (PA), 17-10. After Cal had tied the game at 10-10 on an 18-yard scoring pass from Josh Portis to AJ Jackson with a minute to play, the Huskies started their game winning drive on their own 39-yard line. After Latorre’s fi rst pass fell incomplete, he scrambled for 10 yards out to the Huskies 49-yard line. Following a timeout with 36 seconds to play, the senior quarterback hit a wide-open Chris Tressler with a 47-yard bomb to the Vulcans four-yard line. On the next play, Latorre hit Stiger with a touchdown pass, Stiger’s fi rst career scoring catch, to put Bloomsburg in front 17-10. Cal, though, wasn’t done. Portis completed passes of 21 and 14 yards on consecutive plays putting the ball at the Bloomsburg 36-yard line with six seconds to play. After an incomplete pass left just one second to play, Portis’ last pass was knocked down by the Huskies Mike Varanavage preserving the Bloomsburg win. Th e game was a back and forth struggle between the defenses with the only scoring through the fi rst three quarters being a fi eld goal from Jon Koenig from 42-yards out with 12:47 to play in the second period. In the third period, Cal’s Kevin Hagerman connected from 30-yards out tying the score at 3-3 heading to the fourth period. Bloomsburg went in front 10-3 on a spe-cial teams play. A long punt from Bloomsburg was muff ed by Cal’s Mike Brown and recovered in the end zone by Bloomsburg’s Branden Wright with 4:29 to play. Latorre fi nished 12-22 for 166 yards and one score, while Ben Weaber caught fi ve passes for 37 yards to lead the receivers. Varanavage fi nished with 10 tackles and the one key pass break-up, while Anthony Smith added eight tackles.

touchdown passes in each of the last ten games. No other Bloomsburg quarterback
has strung together as many multiple-touchdown games. Eric Miller had
seven straight games in 2000. Th e BU record for at least one touchdown pass in
consecutive games in the regular season record is 16: by Glen McNamee for the last
nine in 1994 and fi rst seven in 1995; and Miller for the last 5 in 1999 and all 11 in
2000. Including the playoff s that season, Miller reached 20.
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA: Quarterback Josh Portis has only played two seasons
but has amassed an impresive career resume nonetheless. Th e senior has thrown
for 66 touchdowns and 6,305 yards. He is currently the conference’s leader in
pass effi ciency. Chedrick Cherry and Terrance Moore are Portis’ favorite targets.
Cherry has 665 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, while Moore has 588 yards
and seven scores. On the ground, Lamont Smith has racked up 1,136 yards on the
year and is the PSAC’s third best rusher. Defensively, the Vulcans have dominated
their opponents, breaking up 41 passes while
intercepting 18. Allowing only 74 yards
yards on the ground per game, California
is currently fourth nationally in rushing
defense.
VULCANS IN THE TOURNAMENT:
(from California Sports Information)Making their fourth-straight playoff
appearance, the Vulcans earned the third
seed after boasting a 10-1 overall record and
claiming a share of their sixth-consecutive
PSAC West title.
California and Bloomsburg have played
each other fi ve times since 2006 with the
Huskies winning three of the fi ve meetings.
However, Cal U won the only post-season
meeting against Bloomsburg in 2008 with
a 27-24 victory in the Super Regional One
Championship.

*Poll as of 11/15/10
AMONG THE RANKS: Bloomsburg dropped nine spots to No. 20 in Division II
according to the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. In both
of last week’s polls, the Huskies were slotted in the No. 11 position.
LEADING THE NATION: For the ninth week this season and eighth straight,
Franklyn Quiteh sits atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. His average of 158.4
yards per game is now 17 yards per game more than runner-up Phil Milbrath of
Michigan Tech (141.2). Across all divisions, Quiteh was the fi rst runner to reach
the 1,000-yard mark this season and has racked up the second-most yards rushing
(1,742), trailing only Jim Bower (1,779) of D-III’s Maine Maritime.
STIFLING THE OPPONENT: Bloomsburg has held its opponents to fewer than 20
yards on 81 of 143 (57%) of their total drives. On 31 of those drives (22% of the total),
the Huskies forced a punt after only three plays.
THROWING THE BOMB: Th e Huskies have thrown seven passes of 50+ yardage
this season. Pat Carey has connected on six touchdowns from the Bloomsburg side
of midfi eld: 66 yards (Clarion) and 65 yards (Kutztown) to Cory Stiger; 68 yards
(Indiana), 62 yards (Cheyney), and 76 yards (Mercyhurst) to Kyle Fisher; and 52
yards (Shippensburg) to Chris Tressler. On BU’s other long pass, tight end Ben
Weaber hurled 53 yards to Fisher on a trick play that ended on the West Chester
three-yard line.
FROM THE ARCHIVES
By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger
Th e Huskies completed the regular season scoring a total of 426 points and
averaging 38.7 points per game. Th is is the third highest point total ever in 113
seasons of football, behind only 1996 (458) and 2005 (427). Th e average was the
fourth highest, behind 1996 (41.6), 2007 (39.8) and 2005 (38.8).
Every game during the season was decided by 10 or more points for only the
seventh time in school history. Only two other years resulted in a winning record:
1904 (8-1) and 1950 (7-1). Th e four years with a losing record were 1981 (0-10),
1940 (1-6), 1919 (2-5) and 1941 (1-4).
Th e 56 points scored by Mercyhurst were the most surrendered by the Huskies
in a single game since 63 against Delta State in the 2000 National Championship
game. It was the most in a regular season game since Bloomsburg gave up 67 at
Kutztown in 1991. Th e previous regular season high under Danny Hale had been
48 at Shippensburg in 2004.
Th e 93 total points in Saturday’s game marked only the eighth time in school
history (in 989 games) this amount has been reached. Th e others were 106 (58-
48 over UC Davis in 2000), 100 (58-42 over East Stroudsburg in 1996), 97 in the
63-34 loss to Delta State in 2000, 96 in last week’s game with Kutztown, 93 against
Mercyhurst, 92 (92-0 over Northumberland High School in 1912), 91 (a 52-39 loss
to East Stroudsburg in 2005), and 91 (49-42 over Ashland in 2008). Th e Huskies’
record in the eight games is 5-3, with all except one being played since 1996.
Bloomsburg’s all-time record versus California is 12-8-2 in a series that began in
1928, with a home record of 8-2-1, 4-5-1 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site (the
1984 state game in Hershey). Danny Hale’s record with the Vulcans is 5-2, includ-
ing 2-1 at Cal.

BREAKING LOOSE: Bloomsburg has recorded 24 rushes for 20 yards or more this season, eight of which ended in touchdowns.
Franklyn Quiteh is responsible for all but one of these long scoring runs, as he found the endzone from 45 and 68 yards against
Clarion, from 25 yards against Millersville, from 23 yards against Cheyney, from 37 yards against West Chester, from 25 yards
against Kutztown and from 32 yards against Mercyhurst. Codie Butler had a 62-yard run end on the one-yard line versus
Kutztown but later got a second chance and escaped downfi eld for a 63-yard touchdown, one of his two in that game.
EXTENDING THE RECORD: Currently the PSAC’s leader in fi eld goals per game, redshirt freshman Daniel Fisher is now in
exclusive possession of the Bloomsburg single-season record for fi eld goals completed and attempted. Th e previous record was
set in 1986 when Chris Mingrone was successful on 10 of his 20 attempts. On October 30, Fisher also broke the BU single-game
record, which stood at three entering the season. His average of 1.82 fi eld goals per game is fourth in NCAA Division II.

#16 MERCYHURST 56 - #11 BLOOMSBURG 37November 13, 2010
ERIE--Mercyhurst quarterback Travis Rearick threw for 345 yards and four scores to lead the Lakers to a 56-37 win over Bloomsburg in the PSAC Championship game.
Mercyhurst scored on its second possession of the game with Rearick hitting Ter-rence Coon with a 61-yard scoring pass to make it 7-0. Bloomsburg answered with a fi eld goal on its ensuing possession when Daniel Fisher connected on a 26-yard fi eld goal to cap a 61-yard drive. Th e big play in the drive was a 49-yard completion from Huskies quarterback Pat Carey to Cory Stigerputting the ball at the Lakers 21-yard line; however, Stiger came down hard on his shoulder when making the catch and did not return.
Th e Lakers extended their lead to 14-3 when Rearick hit Matt Mohr with a 28-yard scoring pass capping a 49-yard scoring drive. A key play in the drive was a defensive pass interference call on a third and 13 play that kept the drive alive for Mercyhurst.
Bloomsburg closed the gap to 14-10 later in the fi rst taking advantage of a special team’s mistake by Mercyhurst. On a BU punt, the Lakers Trevor Kennedy mishandled the ball with Dave Onorato recovering at the Mercyhurst 35-yard line. Two plays later, Franklyn Quiteh, Division II’s leading rusher, scored on a 32-yard run with 1:49 to go in the fi rst.
Th e home team answered back, marching 81-yards in six plays with Rearick throwing his third TD pass of the game--a four yard strike to Ryan Bartizal--making it 21-10. Later in the period, the Lakers used special teams to score when Kennedy returned a punt 78-yards for a score to make it 28-10 with 8:02 to go before halftime.
Th e Huskies came right back and narrowed the gap back to 11 points when Carey hit Kyle Fisher with a 36-yard scoring pass to make it 28-17 with just over three minutes left to play in the half. Mercyhurst’s Rearick responded and hit Kennedy with an 81-yard scoring pass on third and eight from the Lakers’ 19-yard line that sent the home team to the locker room with a 35-17 lead.
In the second half, Bloomsburg started with the ball, but Carey was intercepted by Kevin Williams who returned the ball 28 yards for a score to make it 42-17. On BU’s next drive, Quiteh had to leave the game with a leg injury after a short two-yard gain and did not return.
After the teams twice traded punts, Bloomsburg made it a 42-24 game when Carey led a 50-yard scoring drive going the fi nal fi ve yards himself to cut the defi cit for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg made it 42-30 early in the fourth period when, following a blocked punt, Carey hit Kyle Fisher with a 76-yard scoring strike with 11:02 left in the game.
On the next possession for Mercyhurst, Rearick directed a 70-yard scoring drive with Gerald Henderson scoring from one-yard out for a 49-30 lead. Bloomsburg did not quit and came back with a quick scoring driver with Carey hitting Tyler Guise with a 23-yard scoring pass cutting the margin to 49-37 with 6:24 left in the game.
But again the Lakers answered a score with one of their own. Garrett Kensy capped the win for Mercyhurst hitting Kennedy with a 17-yard scoring pass.
For Bloomsburg, Carey was 22-37 for a career-high 311 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Quiteh rushed 16 times for 104 yards and one score before leav-ing the game early in the third period, while Kyle Fisher caught six passes for 151 yards and two scores.
