Commodity WeightsCommodity weights were revised, based on the Bureau1 s 1950 consumer expenditure survey in

91 cities, adjusted to reflect 1952 expend!ture patterns. 12/Although the Bureau had begun its planned 3-year revision of the Consumer Price Index ^ 3/

in 19U9, the sudden development of the Korean crisis during the summer of 1950 made necessary certain immediate revisions. As a result, the adjusted retail food price indexHj/ was computed retroactive to January 1950, with a revised set of weights representing estimated 1950 expenditure patterns, and continued through December 1952 15/, in addition to the old series index.

At the end of 1952, the Bureau dropped the old series index, but reinstated it in February 1953 16/ (retroactive to January 1953) and continued its calculation through June 1953 17/ byalrection of President Eisenhower and the Secretary of Labor. The action was in response to requests by members of Congress and by major labor and management groups which had collective bargaining agreements with wage-escalator clauses based on the old series index.

The revised index beginning January 1953 was linked to the adjusted series index at December 1952, after conversion to the new base period, to form a continuous series. These are the indexes shown in this bulletin. The methods of calculating the revised index are essentially the same as for the adjusted and old series indexes previously calculated and described in earlier bulletins.
