INTRODUCTION
• The standards for 12-cm optical discs, CDs, DVDs,
and Blu-ray rewritable discs
• The recording capacity required by applications was
the important issue when these standards were
decided
• To record in the same fashion for an HDTV broadcast

WHAT IS A BLU-RAY DISC..?
• Blu-ray disc is a next-generation optical disc format
jointly developed by a group of leading consumer
electronics and PC companies called the Blu-ray Disc
Association
• Because it uses blue lasers, which have shorter
wavelengths than traditional red lasers

WHY THE NAME BLU-RAY..?
• The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying
technology, which utilizes a blue violet laser to read
and write data.
• The name is a combination of "Blue" and optical ray
"Ray".

Blu-ray Disc Cross Section
• TDK is to introduce hard-coating technologies that would enable bare disk handling, along with higher-speed recording heads and multi-layer recording technology

FORMATS
Blu-ray is initially designed in several differentformats:
• BD-ROM • BD-R• BD-RW • BD-RE

Comparison of BD and DVD

APPLICATINOS
• High definition television recording
• High definition video distribution
• Mass data storage
![Page 11: BLU - RAY TECHNOLOGY BY SAIKIRAN PANJALA](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081507/58ac2a5a1a28abf03a8b668b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
• The Blu-ray disc overcomes DVD-reading issues by
placing the data on top of a 1.1-mm-thick
polycarbonate layer.
• Because the data is closer to the surface, a hard
coating is placed on the outside of the disc to protect
it from scratches and fingerprints.
![Page 12: BLU - RAY TECHNOLOGY BY SAIKIRAN PANJALA](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081507/58ac2a5a1a28abf03a8b668b/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
DISADVANTAGES
• In a DVD, the data is sandwiched between two
polycarbonate layers, each 0.6-mm thick.
• All of these issues lead to a very involved
manufacturing process.

CONCLUSION
• Today consumers are searching for faster
transfer speeds and large storage capacity.
• The advantages of BD are the capacity of
reaching the far-field recording limit, large
tolerance in processing,
