Based on the success of our last batch, The Goa Jazz Academy, in collaboration with Guitar For Life LLC (USA), will be conducting another special, intensive eight (8) week Jazz Ensemble scholarship which will be awarded to: 2 vocalists 2 keyboard/piano players, 2 guitar players 2 wind/reed players 2 drummers 2 bass players Each scholarship (sponsored by GFL (LLC)), is valued at Rs 50,000 and will be offered free to scholarship awardees, however transport, lodging, meals and other non-training expenses will be the responsibility of the student. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Audition Song List • Blue Monk by Thelonious Monk (Bb Major) • Take the A Train by Duke Ellington (C major) • Autumn Leaves by Joseph Kosma (Bb major) • All The Things You Are by Jerome Kern (Ab major) • Stella By Starlight by Victor Young (Bb major) • Misty by Errol Garner (Ab Major) (ballad) FALL/WINTER 2019 Criteria For Selection: Must live in Goa, and be able to commute to Panjim and sometimes Sangolda, for lessons; Must be over the age of 12; Must be willing to commit to two, two-hour training sessions per week during the course Why Jazz? The study of jazz allows musicians to play confidently, improvise and adapt to almost any style, from blues, to rock and everything in between. Benefits of the Scholarship: Learn the fundamentals of improvisation through Jazz, Learn how to play and improvise with other musicians, Learn and perform a variety of different styles of music, Create an ensemble/band that will be able to perform in Goa and across India, Get access to world class learning resources Important Dates: Please register at http://www.goajazzacademy.com/jesreg/ before September 29th, 2019 Auditions will be held 5-7pm, October 6th 2019, at the Kadence Experience Store in Panjim, The Scholarship programme training will commence by the 2nd week of October 2019, Please contact: [email protected] for any queries or phone: +91 98 10 73 22 15. GUITARISTS, PIANISTS, WIND/REED INSTRUMENTS Choose any two of the songs from the Audition List above and be able to play the melody, » then play 1 chorus/cycle using chords “comping” (not applicable to wind/reed players), » play a two chorus/cycle solo, » and finally play the melody again. In addition, be able to play Scales — one, two octaves, major and minor, alternate picking; ability to read a chord chart, be able to solo over basic chord changes, i.e., blues changes. BASSISTS Please be prepared to demonstrate time/groove in the following styles: Swing (medium to up tempo), Straight Eighth, Funk, and Latin (Bossa or Samba). Also, be prepared play behind a professional guitar player and drummer on one of the tunes from the Audition List and play the melody of the tune. DRUMMERS Please be prepared to demonstrate time/groove in the following styles: Swing (medium and up tempo), Shuffle, Straight Eighth, Funk, and a Latin style (Bossa, Samba, etc...). Be prepared play behind a guitar and piano player on one of the tunes from the Audition List. You will also be asked sight read. VOCALISTS Please prepare: one medium to medium-up swing tune (jazz standard from the list above) with melody and improvisation, also, one Ballad (For example, Misty) be able to sing a major, minor pentatonic scale, anything else you might showcase your abilities JAZZ ENSEMBLE SCHOLARSHIP ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Please know the keys for your songs and provide lead sheets when possible.
