OMAR SOSABorn in 1965 in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest inland city, Omar Sosa began his musical study at age eight, study-ing percussion and marimba before taking up piano as a teenage student at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música in Havana. Amassing a unique alchemy of influences that includes tra-ditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers (including Chopin, Bartok, and Satie), Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Os-car Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés, and the pioneering Cuban jazz group Irakere, he ultimately relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995, where he was soon invigorating the Latin jazz scene with his adventurous writing and percussive style. Annually performing upwards of 100 concerts on six continents, Sosa has appeared in venues as diverse as Blue Note Jazz Club, Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous notable jazz festivals across the globe. He’s garnered sev-eral GRAMMY® nominations and has released a string of well-regarded albums in the last decade.

MELISSA ALDANAMelissa Aldana recently won the 2013 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Saxophone Competition where the panel of judges included saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis and Jane Ira Bloom. The first female instrumentalist to take first prize in this event since its inception in 1987, Melissa was award-ed $25,000 in scholarship money and a recording contract with the Concord Music Group. The 24–year old, wrote Ben Ratliff in The New York Times, has “gotten serious as a bandleader in New York over the last few years; she’s made two records on Greg Osby’s la-bel, Inner Circle Music, with a move forward to this year’s Second Cycle. Her performance...covered great range of form and sound: controlled and loose, old and new, learned and intui-tive. She was patient but showed that she could be extravagant. She used some calculated set pieces but also let go of them.” n

The NYU Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece big band, is the premier performing jazz ensemble at New York University featuring talented jazz musicians from around the world. With NYU Jazz Stud-ies located in the heart of Greenwich Village, New York City, the group per-forms regularly at legendary jazz clubs including the Blue Note, Birdland and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Eddie Palmieri, known for his charis-matic power and bold innovative drive, has a musical career that spans over 50 years as a bandleader of Salsa and Latin Jazz orchestras. With a discogra-phy that includes 36 titles, Mr. Palmieri has been awarded Nine GRAMMY® Awards and has been designated an NEA Jazz Master. Born in Spanish Harlem in 1936, Eddie began piano studies at an early age, as did his celebrated older brother, the late Salsa legend and pianist, Charlie Palmieri. He began his professional career as a pianist in the early ‘50s with Ed-die Forrester’s Orchestra. In 1955 he joined Johnny Segui’s band. He also spent a year with the Tito Rodriguez Orchestra before forming his own band, the legendary “La Perfecta” in 1961. La Perfecta was unique in that it featured a trombone section (led by the late Barry Rogers) in place of trum-pets, something that had been rarely done in Latin music, demonstrating the early stages of Palmieri’s uncon-ventional means of orchestration. They were known as “the band with the crazy roaring elephants” because

of this configuration of two trombones, flute, percussion, bass and a vocalist. With an infectious sound, Palmieri’s band soon joined the ranks of Machito, Tito Rodriguez and other major Latin orchestras of the day. His unconven-tional style would once again surprise critics and his fans with the 1970 re-lease entitled Harlem River Drive. This recording was the first to really merge black and latin styles (and musicians), resulting in a free-form sound encom-passing elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. What resulted was a fusion that moved effortlessly from mood, groove, texture and excitement with its multi-dimensional guitar, funky piano riffs, notable brass and unforgettable rhythm section. Led by Eddie, the group also included his brother Char-lie, as well as excellent players from both communities such as Victor Ven-egas, Andy Gonzales, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie and Ronnie Cuber. Further to this proclivity for creating and perform-ing in funk latin style, in 1997 he was invited to record by Little Louie Vega in “Nuyorican Soul,” a release which has been a huge hit with dancers and dj’s in the house music genre. n

Bassist Michael Feinberg’s latest re-cording, The Elvin Jones Project (Sun-nyside Records), continues his ascent in the jazz world. At 25 years old, the Atlanta native and Brooklyn resident has already put out three records as a leader and performed alongside leg-ends including Billy Hart, George Gar-zone, John Scofield, Jean Michel Pilc, Billy Drummond, Ralph Alessi, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dave Samuels, and Lee Ritenour. Feinberg appears on Riten-our’s recent Concord Records release Rhythm Sessions with other notables including Chick Corea, Marcus Miller, George Duke, Vinnie Colaiuta, Kurt El-ling, and Dave Weckl. n

Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Term Professor of Music and Africana Studies at the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania. A widely pub-lished writer, he is the author of Race Music: Black Cultures from Bebop to Hip-Hop (University of California Press, 2003) and The Amazing Bud Powell: Black Genius, Jazz History and the Chal-lenge of Bebop (2013). He was recipient of the Lowens Award from the Society for American Music for best article on an American music topic in 2001.

He is also a pianist, composer and ar-ranger for his Philadelphia-based band, Dr. Guy’s MusiQology. In 2007 the

If the Revive Da Live Big Band is a “19-piece jazz army” (Complex Maga-zine), then what is their fight? Formed in 2010, the Big Band began as a “wouldn’t it be cool if...” kind of idea, where composer, arranger and trum-peter Igmar Thomas wanted to unite generations of like-minded musicians in presenting a new age of big bands. The project has grown to become one of the most exciting and imaginative bands – big or otherwise – in New York.

The musical styles, experience, and tastes of Revive’s members vary wide-ly, but their collective mission is the same. “We’re carrying on, within the tradition of big bands, what would be relevant today,” Thomas says. “[We’re] modifying the message and making it translatable, accessible to the people, so that they have something relevant to grasp on to. It represents that little bridge.” Revive’s repertoire is an authentic gumbo, featuring original compositions by Thomas, as well as epic orchestra-

tions of selected productions from different producers and notable hip-hop songs combined with the original sampled jazz record, all re-imagined and arranged into original works for a big band. “Our voice is one that has a foot deep-ly placed in the jazz roots and the tra-dition of that, à la Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie – but also, another foot deeply invested in 2012, and so on. That’s the direction: Dizzy, Dilla, and us,” declares Thomas. Revive Big Band’s past performanc-es include a tribute to A Tribe Called Quest featuring Jarobi (ATCQ), Buck-shot, Dres, DJ Logic, and many more; a celebration of the life of legendary emcee Guru, featuring DJ Premier, Roy Hargrove, and guests; and the group’s first big band performance in 2010, which featured Nicholas Payton and Talib Kweli. n

John Scofield’s guitar work has influ-enced jazz since the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls some-where between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R&B. Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the gui-tar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a de-but recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his inter-national career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed

him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and com-poser. Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) in-cluding collaborations with contempo-rary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino among many jazz legends. Throughout his ca-reer Scofield has punctuated his tradi-tional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind. n

BABA ISRAEL Baba Israel was raised in New York City by parents who were core members of the Living Theatre. In 2000 he connect-ed with producer, multi-instrumentalist, beatboxer and graffiti artist Yako 440. The two formed a close friendship and began collaborating frequently on a va-riety of projects. One of Baba and Ya-ko’s early experiences co-teaching was at a community center in New York City called The Door where they met then 17 year old vocalist Duv. There was an instant chemistry, and after featuring Duv on one of their albums, they co-produced his solo debut entitled Urban Artistik.

Born in Colombia, Jay Rodriguez be-gan his musical studies at the age of seven on clarinet and was playing lead alto with the late great Tito Puente by the age of 15. He graduated with the highest honors from New York City’s renowned High School for the Per-forming Arts and continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music and The New School.

When asked about his childhood, Ro-driguez recollects: “My saxophone guru Mark Friedman tried to teach me how important it was to be a kid. Of course, I didn’t listen, so I was playing gigs constantly. I’d be coming home at 6 o’clock in the morning, then going to school. That was my childhood and I don’t regret it.”

This focus and determination have propelled Rodriguez into a successful musical career. A two-time GRAMMY® nominee, he has performed or record-ed with a diverse list of talent, including

Elvis Costello, Gil Evans, Craig Har-ris, Eddie Palmieri, Bobby Sanabria, Chucho Valdes, and more.

Rodriguez is also the musical direc-tor and founding member of the New York City phenomenon Groove Col-lective. In its over two-decade career, the band has opened for and jammed with James Brown, backed Tupac Shakur, and shared the stage with Isaac Hayes, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Bernie Worrell, and B.B. King, among others. Rodriguez also earned one of his Grammy nominations for the band’s album People People Music Music (2006).

Whether rocking with Widespread Panic, grooving with Prince, jamming with his local NYC downtown peers Medeski, Martin & Wood, or perform-ing with Groove Collective, Rodriguez remains as active as ever on the scene, performing over 200 gigs a year. n

Onstage and off, guitarist Tuck An-dress and vocalist and arranger Patti Cathcart might, at first impression, strike you as an odd couple. Cathcart exudes the soft, centered yet power-ful graciousness of a gospel singer; Andress almost wears his brain on his skin, anticipating the thousands of mu-sical decisions he’ll have to send to his ten fingers during the course of a per-formance. And yet, with over 30 years of performing together and almost as many years of marriage, the devotion forged by this extraordinary couple shows no sign of dimming from the pressure of familiarity. Andress and Cathcart first met in the Bay Area in 1978. They knew almost in-stantly they that found lifetime musical partners in each other, so they formed a duo, guitarist and vocalist. Friendship and collaboration grew to love, and the two were married in 1981. Their record-ing career took off when Windham Hill Jazz signed them for 1988’s ground-breaking Tears of Joy. This and several other Windham Hill albums put them

on the map, and they’ve been solidify-ing their career, their musical conversa-tion, their technique, and their love to-gether ever since. They now have their own recording studio, as well as their own label, T&P Records, which licens-es their CDs to major labels for distri-bution around the world. They tour Asia and Europe often, and they enjoy tak-ing occasional time off from touring to teach at their Bay Area home, as well as doing workshops while on tour. Tuck & Patti’s latest album, I Remem-ber You, was released in 2008. What’s on the album? Love songs of course, from the Great American Songbook, in-spired by Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. “They are gorgeous tunes, with grand lyrics,” shares Cathcart. “And they sing unabashedly, unapologetically, about love.” “To have every song feel like it’s a dream to play, it doesn’t happen for every performer, but for us, it hap-pens,” says Andress. Smiling, Cathcart adds, “You know, I think this conversa-tion is going to last a lifetime.” n

Benny Golson is a talented compos-er/arranger whose tenor playing has continued to evolve with time. After attending Howard University (1947-1950) he worked in Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson’s R&B band (1951) at a time when it included one of his writing influences, Tadd Dameron on piano. Golson played with Dameron for a period in 1953, followed by stints with Lionel Hampton (1953-1954), and Johnny Hodges and Earl Bostic (1954-1956). He came to prominence while with Dizzy Gillespie’s globetrot-ting big band (1956-1958), as much for his writing as for his tenor playing (the latter was most influenced by Don Byas and Lucky Thompson). Golson wrote such standards as “I Remember Clifford” (for the late Clifford Brown), “Killer Joe,” “Stablemates,” “Whisper Not,” “Along Came Betty,” and “Blues March” during 1956-1960. His stay with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1958-1959) was significant, and dur-

ing 1959-1962 he co-led the Jazztet with Art Farmer. From that point on Golson gradually drifted away from jazz and concentrated more on work-ing in the studios and with orchestras including spending a couple of years in Europe (1964-1966). When Golson returned to active playing in 1977, his tone had hardened and sounded much closer to Archie Shepp than to Don Byas. Other than an unfortunate com-mercial effort for Columbia in 1977, Golson has recorded consistently re-warding albums (many for Japanese labels) since that time including a re-union with Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller in a new Jazztet. Through the years he has recorded as a leader for Con-temporary, Riverside, United Artists, New Jazz, Argo, Mercury, and Dreyfus among others. Returning once again to the spirit of the original Jazztet, Golson released New Time, New ‘Tet on Con-cord Records in 2009.n

Boston-based international folk music ensemble Women of the World makes its Blue Note debut this evening! Hot off the heels of its tour of Japan, this 10-member all-female ensemble, repre-senting Japan, India, Italy, Mexico, and the United States, will officially release its debut EP Koloro at today’s show.

Founded in 2008, Women of the World was the brainchild of Japanese vocal-ist Ayumi Ueda, a Berklee College of Music alumna, who dreamt of bring-ing women from across the globe onto a common creative platform. Over the years, the band has received accolades

Caterina Zapponi was born and raised in Rome, the daughter of celebrated screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi, a collaborator and longtime friend of Federico Fellini, and Françoise Ram-bert, a French-born chanteuse who instilled in Caterina her love of the French repertoire. Growing up amidst her parents’ collaborators and friends helped introduce Zapponi to jazz and the American Songbook while fuel-ing her desire to move to the United States, which she did upon receiving a scholarship from Berklee College of Music. She graduated in two years and won the Berklee Cleo Laine Award for vocal achievement and performance. She went on to be a finalist in the The-lonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition.

Based in New York since 1994, Zap-poni has surrounded herself with a family of remarkably accomplished—and diverse—musicians. Many of them are featured on Romantica. Numerous tracks find her fronting a band includ-ing Monty Alexander on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Martin Pizzarelli on acoustic bass, Frank Vignola on guitar and mandolin. Elsewhere she sings with a trio including Alexander on pi-ano, Hassan Shakur on acoustic bass and Kevin Kanner on drums. The gui-tarist Yotam Silberstein and the multi-instrumentalist Etienne Charles, among others, also make appearances.

Zapponi returns to her childhood in-fluences throughout Romantica, her new Motéma Music release. The al-bum opens with “J’ai ta main,” a song that was part of Zapponi’s mother’s cabaret act. Zapponi is accompanied by Yotam Silberstein in interpreting another song by the seminal mid-20th Century French songwriter-singer Charles Trenet, “Que reste-t-il de nos amours?,” about which Zapponi ex-plains, “My mother would interpret this song whenever they would ask her to sing during a dinner party. We would be sitting with any number of actors, directors, writers, and unfailingly the moment would come when some-body would say ‘Françoise, please sing!,’ and my mother would oblige.” She pays equal attention to the Ital-ian Songbook, including “Polvere di stelle (Stardust)” which plays through-out the well-known Italian film, of the same name, co-written by her father; “Estate,” a Bruno Martino composition included on Joao Gilberto’s landmark album Amoroso; and the classic im-migrant song “Torna a Surriento (Come Back to Sorrento).” The album con-cludes with two songs she wrote with Alexander—one in French, and one in Italian. n

At Cleveland’s infamous “Togo Suite,” a then 28-year old Joe Lovano met and performed with a group of Nigerian musicians involved in an impromptu and joyous cultural exchange. About one year later on his 29th birthday in 1981, as a result of that initial late night club session, Lovano found himself in Lagos, Nigeria, meeting and spend-ing time with the esteemed godfather of the afro-beat movement – Fela Kuti. The meeting of Kuti and his extended family of musicians led to a perfor-mance with the Cleveland and Nigerian musicians joined together in “Tafawa Balewa Square.” The entire experience of performing with Kuti and his fam-ily left Lovano with a lasting feeling that still touches him to this day, and

Joined by guitarist Liberty Ellman, electric bassist Matthew Garrison, percussionist/Afri-can harpist Abdou Mboup, and drum-mer Otis Brown III; “The Village Rhythm Band” showcases the linear relation-ship between West African music and jazz in a way that is totally unique to Lovano’s voice – warm, sinuous, and constantly moving over an emphatic pulse. n

Matt Dickey is a NYC based guitarist/composer/arranger and audio engineer. He is inspired musically by a vast array of artists and styles: from the funky soul of James Brown and the 70s fusion of Herbie Hancock to the improvisational rock and roll spirit of The Grateful Dead and the compositions of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Stravinsky, Debussy (and many others), he also draws from the flavors of Latin and African rhythms, hip-hop, classic R&B and various elec-tronic music styles.

Try This At Home is Matt’s 10-piece jazz-funk ensemble, comprised of some of the best young musicians in NYC today. They play original com-positions from his 2010 release (of the

same name) as well as arrangements and covers of funky classics. Erin Leah’s catchy songwriting, melody and vocal delivery shows sensitivity but then assures you with strength and expertise.
