Like the people in this picture, the weather is a bit strange. We hope it warms up by July or August, but until then, this umbrella’s been get-ting used a lot lately. It’s been raining for about forever and the skies are thick like gumbo, which is what I’m about to eat for lunch once I’m done typing this. Did I tell you there’s a rabbit in it?

We eat chicken more than we do rabbit. In fact, a favorite summer past time of ours is sticking a can of beer up the cavity and roasting it on the grill. While the bird does its thing, the kids do theirs: tug on our pants and beg for a bath.

Yes. Our dirty kids love summer baths because we do them outside where they can make a glorious mess of things. There’s apparently a televi-sion commercial out there for a male enhancement product that’s ripped off our idea of enjoying life in a claw foot tub. But all you need is one tub, silly.

So the chicken is roasting, the kids are pretending to be fish, and the sun is showering Vitamin D on our faces. Then a high pitched squeal pierces the peace: Apple pie!

And then both kids laugh. Apple pie! More laughter. And when Dolly Peyton says it, it sounds more like

fromthepublishers

Apple paah!, with the curious inflec-tion on the “apple.”

Each one of them are taking sips from a cup they fill with sudsy water (gross, I know) and when they spit it out, they shout Apple pie! We have no idea what they’re talking about but it’s their thing. There are three kinds of apple pie I know of and nei-ther one of them involves soap.

They play and play until their toes and fingers are downright pruny. Then, shivering as they drain the tub, we wrap them up in towels and serve dinner. The chicken’s pretty good. Tastes like rabbit.

Enjoy!

Beguiling BottlesI just returned, somewhat bleary-

eyed, from an impromptu trip to Spain and Portugal, countries whose beguil-ing beauty helped mitigate the stress of such a last minute trip abroad. Multi-coursed meals of top quality dishes did the rest. If you think that food in Spain is no more than heaping plates of mediocre paella, it may be time to step into a Pintxos bar in sexy San Sebastian. Pintxos (Basque tapas) are mini works of art, visual feasts for the eyes as much as gustatory pleasures for belly and tongue. And then there’s the wine…. Spain boasts the largest area of wine cultivation in the world and accounts for more than 30% of land under vine in the EU. But this would be of little importance if those wines were plonk. But they’re not. Here are our top picks: Mokoroa Txakoli, 2011 – Originally enjoyed only by Basque kings and aristocrats, today Txakoli is found throughout tapas bars. Slightly effervescent with light notes of lemon blossom. Perfect with shellfish and seafood or great on own. $14

Marqués de Riscal, Rioja, Reserve 2007 – We toured this sleek operation

with its Frank Gehry building, meant to resemble a grapevine (but if you said Ribbon Candy, that’s okay.) Like the Guggenheim, the building is coated in titanium in colors of pink, gold and silver, symbolic of Riscal bottles. The 2007 Reserve remains two years in American oak and a year in the bottle before release, creating a classic, el-egant Rioja with great aging potential. Balsamic and spicy aromas mix with notes of blackberry and plum. Pair with cured cheeses, baked vegetables, ham, poultry and roasts. $22

Messias 10-Year Tawny Port – No trip to Portugal is complete without port and Messias winery is as small and local as Marqués de Riscal is massive and commercial. Port wine is made by letting grapes ferment to 7% alcohol, then adding one part brandy to five parts wine, which stops fermentation, leaving the unfermented sugars. Think dates, prunes and caramelized figs. En-joy with cheese (Stilton or cheddar are best), nuts, dried fruit or dessert. $24

Samantha Swift, 6 of Staunton gets a piggy-back ride from her sister Breona, 13 at Hull’s Drive-In in Lexington. Heather Tolley (opposite) works the register at the concession stand, recently renovated to accomodate growing crowds. Fans of the drive-in include Daniel Shifflett and Christa Heath of Staunton, and Lilly Baumbach who dressed for a chilly night.

The long line of cars inching its way through the entrance begins to form a few hours before show time. That’s plenty of time to play tag in front of the big screen, get your tub of popcorn, and break out the sleeping bags.

Right about now is when Jeremy Reter’s job gets busy. But if you love what you do, it’s not work. After retiring from the Navy, Jeremy was hired as the pro-jectionist about a year and-half ago and manages the theater.

“The first time I ever went into a drive-in I was barely tall enough to see over the seat,” Jeremy tells me, seated at a table outside the concession stand. “It was up in Maryland, I went to see The Blob. That’s what you went to the drive-in to see, those kind of movies.”

Rewind to 1950, the year the Lexington landmark opened up as The Lee Drive-In Theatre. The first movie screened was a John Wayne flick called The Wake of the Red Witch. In 1957, Mr. Sebert W. Hull bought the business and ran it until his death in 1998. His wife then sold the drive-in to the man running the auto body shop next door, W.D. Goad. But the cost of keeping up an old outdoor movie theater was too much and Mr. Goad started looking for a buyer. In June of 1999, a group of concerned fans formed a non-profit organization, the Hull’s Angels, to keep the theater from going dark. After a successful fund raising campaign, the organization bought the business in 2001 and screened its first movie of the season, quite fittingly, Mission Impossible.

“We’re one of the few drive-ins that actually still has speakers on speaker poles,” Jeremy beamed. “So when people come out they can still hang them on their win-dow, get the sound through them.”

Daniel Shifflett and Christa Heath drove here from Lexington in their pick-up with a pair of camp chairs and blankets.

“You sit in a movie theater, you’re in a dark room with everybody, you’ve gotta be quiet. When you come out here you can make a little bit more noise. It’s more like an event that you watch rather than just going to the movies and being quiet or watching TV,” Daniel said.

A group of friends bundle up to watch Iron Man 3 at Hull’s Drive-In in Lexington. First opened in 1950, in 2001 it reopened as a community owned non-profit cooperation. As the skies dim, theater manager Jeremy Reter makes announcements from the projector room (opposite, lower right). For more information, visit HullsDriveIn.com.

There’s a reason John ‘JJ’ George, a Hull’s staffer often seen with a camera in his hand, keeps coming here. Now a teenager, he began bringing his daughter, Rose, to the drive-in when she was 5. “A drive-in theater is its own unique experience,” JJ explained. “There’s nothing like it. It’s one of the only things we consider ourselves as being truly American.

It’s why Chris Marshall drove up here from Madison Heights with his wife and kids. “Growing up my wife and I [went to drive-ins], but our kids are in high school. They just didn’t understand the whole concept so it’s a chance for us to help them experience a slice of Americana.”

A slice of Americana, millennium style. The Hull’s Angels raised enough money last year to replace the theater’s ancient 35mm system with a state-of-the-art digital projector. The concession stand underwent a complete renovation and now serves burgers made from cows raised on a nearby family farm, Buffalo Creek. High on the list of to-do’s for the Hull’s Angels: replace the original movie screen which was damaged in last year’s Derecho storm.

“That storm hit while we were open 4th of July weekend showing Men in Black II,” JJ recalled. “It was a big epic movie that was supposed to open, everybody was anticipating the opening and within an hour after everybody got here, the storm came. It scared everybody and we were just telling everybody to go. The screen was whipping around, dirt and every-thing was flying everywhere, storms, lightning and the whole thing.”

A testament to the strength of its volunteers, Hull’s reopened the follow-ing weekend. It’s the little drive-in that could.

“We always make a joke,” JJ says, chuckling. “As soon as a drive-in turns into a flea market, it’s going out of business, that’s a sure sign ... We’re going strong, we really are.”

Stronger than the Iron Men beaming digitally on the screen. BRL

OPTICALLY CLEAR & GUARANTEED FOR LIFE

Turn your existing windows into crisp, beautiful high definition!

Welcome to the evolution of windows

If you could, would you like to turn your current windows into high definition? What if you could turn your windows into high definition and protect all of your furnishings, floors, and artwork from the sun fading them, would you? How about making your windows high definition, protecting all of your interiors from fading and making your windows more energy efficient and your home significantly more climate controlled, would that be of interest? Ok, Ok, just one more “what if”. What if you could make your windows high definition, protect your valuables from fading, increase the efficiency of your windows, make your home more comfortable, while having better natural light in your home with one product from a brand you know and trust AND a lifetime warranty, wouldn’t you like to know more about it? Of course you would!

My name is Darin, owner of Clear View Window Tinting, and our product is made by 3M™. When you think of window tinting you may think of something dark, gloomy, reflective, or distorting. Well it remains true with older technologies and other manufactures films. Fortunately 3M™ has come out with two new product lines, Prestige and Night Vision. Unlike the films of past, Prestige and Night Vision have no interior reflectivity and uses no color which are the two culprits for bad views and natural light. The beauty of these films is not only do they provide better views than older or other films but better views than your normal windows. With the vast technologies and resources at the disposal of 3M™ they also have been able to make these films perform at equal or greater levels than the darker more reflective films of old!

Please give me a call or email me directly for a free consultation. Our consultations include labeled samples on your win-dows and a detailed explanation of how they work and the cost. Typically, clients will leave them up for a few days so they can see what they look like different times of days and this allows them to make an informed decision. Call me today and I’ll guarantee there will be at least one sample that you will see through better than your current windows, not to mention all of the other great benefits such as fade protection, comfort, better natural light, and energy efficiency.

I never thought of myself having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder until a teenager in my class at Vacation Bible School pointed out I was micromanaging a photo collage the kids were supposed to be making by placing all the pictures in a perfect mosaic pattern. What she said was, “How long have you had OCD?” I had no idea what she was talking about until I came home and looked it up. No won-der I loved watching the television program “Monk,” although, thank the good Lord I’m not quite in stage four of the disease like he was. A two, maybe.

I guess I come by it honestly. My dad used to drive all the rela-tives crazy with remarks like, “Do you know how many steps it is from our front door to the mailbox?” Or, “You can shave a half-mile off your trip to the grocery store by taking a left on 33rd street instead of a right.” When everyone else was rolling their eyes up

into their heads and groaning, I was paying attention. He also kept all the screwdrivers lined up together in his toolbox and each size nail had its own compartment in the little plastic pull out drawers he kept on the shelf in the garage.

I well remember the exact spot in the highway my dad turned to me and said, “Always remember this is where our Dodge Dart’s odom-eter turned 100,000 miles.” I never forgot. It was out by the landfill on Dixie Highway when I was in the 11th grade. I find myself doing the same thing now; our little Honda CRV turned 200,000 miles just past David Hatter’s house on Love Road. My long-suffering husband resisted the urge to roll his eyes into his head and groan.

Looking back, I’ve always had the urge to straighten crooked pictures hanging on a wall or put flower pots exactly in the middle of the porch posts. My biggest OCD moment always comes at the end of the harvest season when I place the canned goods in my pantry on the shelves by color. The reds of canned tomatoes always go next to the whites of sauerkraut, never beside the pickled beets…. not enough definition between the colors. I’ve always thought this was perfectly normal and not a brain defect.

While I’m thinking about it, my mother had her own personal fetish about the linen closet. All the green sheets were lined up together and the blue towels were alternated with the pink, giving an overall pleasing effect when the door was opened. Kind of Feng-Shui for the closet. With both parents exhibiting this type of behavior, it was a given I’d follow in their footsteps.

Although I do like things orderly, I’m not driven to distraction, say, if the grass is cut in any particular pattern as I see at some homes. Ever notice those perfect diagonal cuts in yards where men are out there on riding lawn mowers? OCD, I betcha! There are more of us around than not.

I have no medical proof as to whether this oddity is hereditary or just a learned behavior but my daughter organizes her shirts by sleeve-less, short/long sleeves, turtlenecks and vests and her sock drawer is a thing of beauty with all the rolled up sausages in perfect symmetry. At the age of two, her daughter would compulsively re-organize the candy and gum rack while sitting in a cart at the grocery checkout line. So our entire family lineage is doomed to have Type A, Anal Retentive habits.

While reading my column to Billy, he said not to forget to mention that I always put exactly 26 pieces of wood in the wheelbarrow when coming from the woodpile to the back porch. He says, “What does it matter?” I say, “Give me a break, it’s what I can comfortably push, plus 26 is such a nice round number!”

I once read a story in the Reader’s Digest about a young man who had the habit of tapping out a certain rhythm with a pencil eraser. The thing drove him (and everyone else) crazy for years. One day he had a car accident, hitting his head so hard it left him unconscious for a few days. When he awoke, the compulsion had left him and he tapped no more. With that said, I pray for safety so I may continue to line up the Ball jars in my pantry in traditional OCD color-coordinated fashion. BRL

The Right Move!Successful Selling Solutions

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Finally! The local real estate market is showing signs of improve-ment. First quarter residential sales in Nelson County were up by 50% compared to the same quarter last year. While the market is more promising, the market itself is just one of many puzzle pieces that have to come together to achieve success. If your goal is to “list to sell” rather than “list to sit”, you may want to seriously consider all of these com-ponents to ensure that you truly are making the right move!

Select the right agent; All agents are NOT the same. That would be like saying all homes are the same because they all have roofs and floors. Agents may be subjected to the same market conditions, but how an agent chooses to respond to the environment to generate results, can and does vary greatly. Never hire a part-time, cost constrained, corner cutting, “that’s the way I have

always done it” agent. Align with a real estate professional with a track record of success. Any agent can list a home, but not just any agent can get it sold.

Set the right price; Market re-covery is a slow process. Inventory of homes is still high compared to the number of buyers; thus there are limited opportunities to make a sale making it imperative for sellers to set a market driven asking price. Over-come the temptation to set a seller-driven asking price: the price you paid for it, plus the cost of repairs, commissions, and other markups. In addition, don’t be lured into listing with the agent suggesting the highest list price. An “asking price” does not automatically equate to a “selling price”. The list price of your home should only be based on meaning-ful facts and figures as derived from current market statistics. A list price should be supported by a CMA, com-parative market analysis. Comparing

your home with active and recently sold properties will define the current competition and identify what buyers have actually been willing to pay for similar properties.

Create the right conditions; Properly showcasing your home may enable it to spring ahead of the competition. With so many choices, buyers can afford to be picky and may not be willing to accept a less than perfect product. Before you put the house on the market, make those much needed repairs and renovations. Change the outdated light fixture, replace the stained carpet, and fix that dripping sink. And yes… thoroughly clean and stage it!

Have the right attitude; Work toward a win-win situation. When an offer is rejected there are no winners, so don’t be easily insulted and dig your feet in the sand. Even though you have a bottom line, don’t abso-lutely refuse to budge. The cost of holding out could have greater finan-

cial and emotional consequences.Keep the right frame of mind;

Expect and deal with the unexpected. Getting contracts to closing is much more difficult than it used to be, es-pecially if the purchaser is a borrow-er. In particular, government loan programs may produce last minute delays during final investor review. Don’t be alarmed if the underwriter requires an updated appraisal or some other condition to be satisfied just prior to closing. Unless you are dealing with a cash buyer, these last minute requests may be unavoidable.

If you make the right decisions, you will be more likely to get the right results!

Dustin Thurston, a junior at Fort Defiance High School, has more than just homework and final exams to think about; he’s got racing on his mind.

And even though Dustin’s been living with cerebral palsy – a condition that limits his mobility and affects his speech – he hasn’t let that stop him from participating in Waynesboro’s annual Run the Valley’s Park to Park Half Marathon Race for the last three years.

“It all stemmed from his teacher, Lauren Heberling and her husband, Eric, who has run this race all five years,” says Dustin’s mom and team-captain, Stephanie Thurston on the sidelines of this year’s race. “So, they mentioned to me, ‘Hey, how about we get a Team Dustin together,’ and I was all for it. Then Therapeutic Adventures got involved with their lightweight chair that he could be pushed in, and we just formed this team.”

And you don’t have to be a runner to be on Team Dustin. In fact, more supporters gather on the sidelines each and every year Team Dustin participates in the 13.1 mile event, which stretches from Waynesboro to Stuarts Draft.

“Dustin loves his team. ‘Cause they’re wild and crazy and lots of fun. And they love him and he loves them. It’s wonderful; the connec-tion is just really great. They are teachers and friends, there’s a little mixture there,” Stephanie describes in the midst of a crowd thick with blue Team Dustin t-shirts.

This year, Dustin even had classmate and peer mentor, Isaac Neil, long-boarding all thirteen miles beside him, excluding the starting and finishing lines, which he ran.

“The whole thing is great,” agrees Dustin’s special education teacher, Laurel Hiberling. “Because a running race is very individu-alized, everyone has their own personal goals. But when you come together and do it for a bigger cause, it just makes the whole thing so much better.”

“Therapeutic Adventures is the beneficiary of the Park to Park Half Marathon,” explains T.A. Founder and Executive Director, Mark An-drews on race day. “Several years ago when Team Dustin got together they wanted to run for the cause. So, we met Lauren and her class and Team Dustin, and then that started a partnership.”

While waiting by the finish line, Lauren explains T.A. a little fur-ther with excitement practically bursting out of her.

“Therapeutic Adventures is a non-profit organization that utilizes adaptive equipment to take people with special needs out into the wild and to do flag fishing, canoeing. They take my class skiing every year because we fund raise for them. So, Dustin gets on a mono-ski and goes down the hill. It’s amazing.”

Along with a new haircut, a good man, and one hell of a busy year, Nelson County-based songstress Sally Rose can also add finishing a second album to the notches on her braided belt. And in a tiny one-room studio in Charlottesville, with cords snaking across the rug-scattered floor, art and LPs climbing up the walls, and just enough room to play their instruments, Sally Rose and her new band are working late nights on her follow-up to Heat Lightning, released in 2011.

“The new album is called Oh My Stars! and it’s a five song EP, and they’re bizarrely enough mostly inspired by falling in love and embracing being a southern rock kind of musician these days with a full band,” says Sally Rose, taking a quick break from recording. “And I’ve fallen in love with bands like Southern Culture on the Skids and their classy approach to trailer trash. And then there’s Sarah White who’s always been a huge influence of mine. And I wanted to steer more in that direction of having kind of a rockier feel to my music and stepping away from the folksier stuff.”

And even though this young woman’s been busy busting out of her shell, she’s still using her down-home roots as a sound foundation.

“I’ve been makin’ a band with my family. My mom, Cath-erine “Shootin Moon” Monnes plays fiddle and cello, rub board, and sings harmony with me. My boyfriend, “Sweet Pete” Stallings plays lead guitar, and my sister’s fiancé, Benjamin Jensen plays upright bass and jazzed influenced drums,” Sally Rose says smiling over her band mates. “And Jesse Fiske with Single Barrel Studio is the man producing our album that we’re putting out in June. Which is really ex-citing ‘cause I’ve had solo or duo albums, but this is the first full band I’ve ever put out.”

And with that, Sally Rose flashes a dimpled smile, picks up her guitar, and gets back to work. BRL

Once a year the Bike Virginia Tour gives cyclists the opportunity to break out of their vehicular confines and explore hundreds of miles of scenery first-hand, while also utilizing historical landmarks as resting points along the way.

As far as Dick Elder’s concerned, “Bike Virginia” isn’t just an annual event, it’s a lifestyle. We met up at Devils Backbone Brewing Company, a popular aprés ride destination near Wintergreen Resort.

“For basic transportation, bikes are great. I just know that it’s better than being in a car. When you’re on a bike, you hear things of nature, you hear the birds, you can see the flowers. We ride past field after field of horses, cows, goats… It’s a different kind of aesthetic experience, I think,” says Dick, refer-ring to the casual collection of cyclists he rides with every week.

“There’s a biking group in Stoney Creek (or Wintergreen) that rides basi-cally on Wednesdays. You find people who do the things you like to do and it’s fun to do them together,” says Dick, who’s been biking since the early nineties and is constantly encouraging newcomers to the sport.

Fellow Stoney Creeker, Sharon Crothers admits she was wary of tackling the terrain. “I thought I was never gonna bike again when I moved down here because it’s so hilly,” she said. “And then I found out, if you just keep at it, you can do the hills… and hills are worth it because for every hill you go up, you get to come back down.”

And although the quiet streets of Stoney Creek are a favorite local spot to ride amongst these bikers, they’re peddling their way across Virginia, one hill at a time.

“We hope that everbody knows we’re coming. So when they see 1500 people on the road in spandex, they don’t freak out.”

BIKE VIRGINIA

“We’re neighbors and friends. We do a lot of things together. We ride around the neighborhood and now we’re starting to do more adventuresome things,” explains Dick. “Bike Virginia is a great experience. Every year, there are 5 or 6 days and we tour a different part of Virginia. Last year we were up in Berryville. Year before that it was Pulaski, Radford, then Waynesboro and Staunton. It’s a great state. It’s a great state to bike in.”

This will be Dick’s seventh year cycling in the Bike Virginia Tour, which takes place June 21-26, and stretches across several scenic settings including the town of Buena Vista, the city of Roanoke and the bucolic Tye River.

“We’re gonna be in Lexington with 1500 riders the third week in June, and it’s a great place to ride bikes, very rural, beautiful scenery. Other things that people on the Bike Virginia Tour are gonna have access to is tubing on the Maury River, there’s an opportunity to go kayaking on the Upper James River Water Trail, there’s wineries we’re gonna visit, there’s micro brewer-ies around there. It’s a great area and I think everybody’s gonna have a really great time when we’re there this summer,” Dick describes with excitement.

“And we hope that everybody knows that we’re coming. So when they see fifteen-hundred people on the road in spandex they don’t freak out.”

Thanks for the heads up! BRL

34 Blue Ridge LIFE JUNE 2013

The Bagworm and ControlThese insects are notorious feeders

of evergreens in late spring/early summer and exhibit an easy to detect, yet difficult to control life cycle due to a tough, impenetrable cocoon of silk and remnants of their host plant around their bodies like some sort of alien camouflage. Literally one ac-tive cocoon allowed to emerge, feed and reproduce can spell certain doom for a tree and even neighboring trees if allowed to go unchecked. How-ever, even these tough critters have a weakness in their feeding cycle that allows us to control them relatively easy. Timing, as everything in life, is essential.

Thankfully, detection is not that hard. Bagworms are usually located by the bags found on the underside of branches produced by the caterpillar stage of their life cycle. These bags are around 2 inches in length, ½ or so in width, have an almost tear drop shape and are composed of silk, bark and leaves, woven in a shingle-like fashion from the host plant. These cocoons repel chemicals and even water which makes control espe-cially difficult once an infestation is detected. In May and early June in this area (depending on weather pat-terns), these caterpillars emerge on the topside of where the cocoon is at-tached to the plant (imagine an insect form of a hermit crab), and eat on the foliage of the host plant – moving on the plant with silken strands, by wind or crawling in search of newly emerging, soft foliage. During this feeding cycle, bagworms will appear much the same as they do during their dormant stages, however, if you are careful and do not disturb the host plant (which will move them back inside their protective cover), you can see them slowly move and consume large amounts of foliage. Once the feeding cycle is over, the next stage of their growth cycle is a

moth stage (for the male) where they mate. After mating, each female can produce a large clutch of eggs, 500 to 1,000, and die. Since the females do not fly, once an infestation occurs, control is imperative or certain death of the host plant follows. Fortunately there is only one generation per year.

Unfortunately, affected species are large and wide. A wide range of broadleaf and evergreen trees and shrubs serve as hosts for the bag-worm, including arborvitae and other ornamental conifers (spruce), box el-der, cedar, cypress, elm, fruit and nut trees, juniper, live oak, locust, maple, persimmon, pines, salt cedar, sumac, sycamore, wild cherry, willow and many other ornamental plants. Dam-age is typically the outer layer or the entire leaf. Either way, typically the plant cannot recover from the damage if left unchecked. Studies have shown that just 4 bagworms can cause enough damage to a host species that sale and/or its ultimate viability has been compromised.

Control is key in this feeding stage. Yes, you can pick them off and destroy them if they are on a small plant, but I personally have better things to do with my time than search up and down, remove them and destroy them. Although they do have numerous enemies (which does seem to control large outbreaks of this insect), the best control is to target the bags while they are small and feeding with systemic or contact insecticides sprayed at dusk on the entire plant since they largely feed when the sun is low in the horizon. Chemicals available to spray during their feeding cycle that are widely available to consumers are Sevin (Carbaryl), acephate (Orthene) and cyflurthin (Bayer Insect and Lawn Killer). It should be noted that the larger and longer you wait to spray, the more difficult it will be to control this insect.

Dusting off the BikeThe weather is bringing us out-

doors again. Somewhere in your basement or garage, a dusty bike may be hidden. It is time to get back on the saddle again. Cycling, whether on the road or trail, is a wonderful way to exercise. It improves your cardio-vascular endurance and it can be a solo or group activity. It is a way for families to exercise and play together outside.

First, the dusty bike has to become road worthy. Get a tune up to clean the chain, adjust the brakes and gears and ensure the tires are safe and not dry rotted. There is necessary basic equipment for cycling to make it safe and enjoyable. A helmet for protec-tion is important; there is a technique to adjusting the straps for a proper fit helmet. Biking shorts to prevent chafing are essential. A suitable saddle is worth the money; note that there is a difference between a man’s cycling saddle and a women’s saddle.

Gloves make the ride more comfort-able. And sunglasses will decrease eye strain. You should carry an extra tire tube, tools and pump in your bike kit.

Now, the bike is sparkling again and you are outfitted. You hop on and it is ever so uncomfortable! It is vital to have your bike fitted for you. A good bike fit ensures comfort, efficiency and alignment when riding and can prevent muscle and joint in-jury. Everyone has different size legs, torso and arms and there are many adjustments on a bike to match it with your body size. It will improve your comfort and performance im-mensely.

Congratulations! Now you are ready. One of my favorite aspects of riding is to seeing beautiful Nelson County. It is a gorgeous place to cycle. So, enjoy and stay tuned for next month’s issue on places to ride and road rules and courtesy.

Dear Dr. Steve,My hands go numb and my wrist

hurts! Do I have carpel tunnel syn-drome?

Oh that pesky little area in the wrist called the carpel tunnel. It is a small opening between the wrist bones (the “carpel” bones) and a tough piece of ligament that holds the bones together. Through that open-ing travels a whole bunch of tendons and one of the big nerves that goes to the hand. The area sees a lot of action—every time you move your wrist or fingers things are sliding in and out of the carpel tunnel. So, you can imagine that the nerve or tendons there can get rubbed and irritated or inflamed pretty easily.

Any repetitive use of the hands and fingers can lead to carpel tunnel, such as typing or manual labor. But, you don’t have to do those kinds of things to be plagued with this dis-ease; it can just happen for fun (not much fun). When the area becomes inflamed, you might feel pain in the hand or wrist. The nerve that gets affected works on the thumb, ring, and middle fingers. So, often there is

numbness in that area. But, some-times the numbness overtakes the en-tire hand or even leaves the hand and heads for the elbow. It is often worse at night or in the morning because we have a natural tendency to bend our wrists as we sleep which closes off and makes smaller the already tight carpel tunnel.

So, if you’ve got it, what do you do? Wrist splints can help quite a bit. They keep you from bending the wrist so you don’t compress the carpel tunnel and make things worse. That allows the area to heal. A visit to your doctor might land you some drugs to try in the form of anti-inflammatories (such as ibuprofen or much more potent corticosteroids). Splinting will probably be recommended. Some-times, if things get bad enough, a ste-roid shot can be a big help. Finally, in some cases it takes surgery to open up the carpel tunnel to give all of those crowded nerves and tendons room to move. Hope this helps!
