With a Recreation Management degree from Appalachian State, Bailey Kinsman, the Blue Ridge Mountain Club Sales Office Coordinator, was pretty much tailor-made for her job. Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bailey spent her childhood hiking, kayaking, and running marathons with her parents and sister.

“I come from a very adventurous, fitness-oriented kind of family. We were always doing something sporty together. In high school, that led me to becoming a pole vaulter. Which is a little strange, but I loved it.” In fact, she loved it so much, she was a top pole vaulter in the state for several years.

Bailey worked for BRMC as an intern right after graduation and then moved to Colorado to work with Vail Resorts. While there, she met up with BRMC Sales Executive Ean Faison, who was skiing in Vail at the time, who persuaded her to apply for an open position at Blue Ridge Mountain Club. Once the job was in hand, Bailey moved back East where she now works as a sales coordinator managing leads, Facebook, Pinterest, the newsletter, as well as, Discovery Tour reservations, and closings on houses and homesites.

“I love BRMC and I really love the people, the staff, and the residents. The residents are all so friendly and adventurous. They constantly have get-togethers and parties, both inside and outside. It’s not your average Highlands Community. There’s something very special here that you really have to experience to understand. It’s why I came back. And it’s why I’ll stay.”

P eople migrate to the mountains for two key reasons, the climate and the views. If you’ve ever been to BRMC, you know the views are absolutely stunning and worth every oxygen-filled gasp.

And if you were here at all this summer, you know that the weather was spectacular. Rain to fill the rushing streams and waterfalls, sunny days for hiking, fishing and swimming, and temperatures below 80 by day and 60’s by night. By any standards, it was an exceptional season. So given all of this, what makes Blue Ridge Mountain Club unique from all the other homes, neighborhoods, and communities in the High Country? It really speaks to the desires of our residents to have a home that is as much outside as it is inside. Families who are seeking to create a legacy home for their children and grandchildren come here to experience a community family unlike any other, year-round outdoor adventures, and beautifully constructed homes that will last many lifetimes.

As you read this edition of The Call, look closely at the experiential message shared by our member family in the “Find Your Forever” section of The Call. Take note of the upcoming events in our area and enjoy a preview of new amenities and condominium construction. We are experiencing a tremendous surge in growth around our gorgeous mountain land that’s a boon for everyone.

The spirit of this place is wrapped up in what we call the “Magic of Mountain Living” and this issue of The Call is dedicated to providing you better insight into what makes BRMC special and to helping you find your forever home.

What Moved Us

PHIL: We were born and raised in Long Island and needed a change. I’m really mobile in my company, so we can move anywhere. We kept getting emails from BRMC, harassing us, in a nice way, so we took a flight out in the winter, figuring if we loved it in the winter, we would love it at any time.

We weren’t specifically thinking about North Carolina. However, I needed a pretty central location so I could go back and forth to New York. We came here and met with Jamie and absolutely fell in love with it.

The views are magical. When we first came through the gates, we probably stopped ten times to take pictures before we even got to the cottages that we were seeing.

BAMBI: And we really wanted the four seasons. It was really important to us to have that.

What’s in a House

PHIL: After seeing the property at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, we knew we were buying on the spot; there was no question of that. It came down to two properties, and then one property. We knew we were buying a property and a home.

I wanted a cottage, but my wife had different plans. She won. We have three daughters and she wanted a place that was big enough for them to come with their own families and have their own little suites.

BAMBI: I’m very outdoorsy. I love fishing and hiking. Everything that comes with the mountains. So I love it here.

PHIL: We knew we wanted a mountain timber frame home with a lot of glass and wood. We met with multiple builders and we hired two architects simultaneously. Eventually, we were able to narrow it to an architect and a builder who shared our vision.

Originally from Long Island, Phil and Bambi Vignola were empty nesters, with the last of their three

daughters having just left for college. They knew they wanted a change, to get out of New York, where the

political climate and the healthcare industry were not the same as they had once been.

BAMBI: I wanted everything open in the house. Nothing closed.

PHIL: We designed the home that we wanted. It’s absolutely perfect and everything that we wanted. It’s probably about 7,000 sq feet, not counting 1,600 sq feet of covered outdoor porches.

BAMBI: It has seven bedrooms, two porches with an outdoor kitchen, a big open kitchen, and living room.

PHIL: It was a difficult process to get it built and moved into. We were selling a house, boat, and office building; graduating a child; sending another off to college; moving into New York City; and trying to negotiate the tricky waters of the insurance business. It was probably the most stressful two years of our lives.

However, the most amazing part is that with the help of the whole BRMC community, we probably have more friends here than in New York. Our transition has been made easier by the people who live here.

In It Together

PHIL: We were not the lone wolves building a home in the middle of nowhere. As much as it was stressful, it was also a lot of fun. We came down every three or four weeks.

You can’t even describe how amazing it is. And when we invite friends down, they sit there with their mouths open at how gracious the people are. This weekend, we had Friday pizza and appetizers at our house at 5 and then we went over for dinner at 7. That doesn’t happen in NY. There are 10 or 20 different families that are doing this every single week.

We lived in our home in New York for 20 years and raised our family there and that never occurred. It probably happens here because Jim Pitts and his crew have really made it a point to schedule events and get people together. I don’t know how or why it works the way it does, it’s very casual.

Few of us actually live here on a full time basis, only about seven or eight families. The rest of the families pop in and out. We always see them when they’re here. There are people from all different walks of life here. And we all just mesh. Our builder gets his clients together and we have all become friends. Everybody has really felt welcomed from Day 1. Whether it’s Martini Madness, or just happy hour and hors d’oeuvres, everybody’s welcome to come. There are a lot of events like that.

Finding Our Forever Friends

PHIL:It’s funny because my clients and friends were shocked when they heard that we were up and moving. We’ve been together since high school and everybody said there’s no way you’re getting Bambi to move to the woods. They said you’ll never see your friends there. But here, we do. For whatever reason, we see our NC friends so much more frequently; I don’t think we would have had the same camaraderie on a golf course in Florida.

I don’t know how they did it or created it. I think they work really hard at BRMC. The staff puts together a lot of events. No one moving here is a miserable human being. We have not met anybody that we didn’t like. There’s something very special about this community.

You’re able to bring your first set of “forever friends” here and have them be friendly with your new “forever friends.” We had to build a home that the kids wanted to come to. They didn’t think they would have the special rooms and things they had in our other home. It was fun to beat their expectations. They didn’t have the vision that we did. It was important that they would want to be here with their friends. And they’ve made so many new friends here already.

BAMBI: We want this to be a legacy home for our family. Now and 100 years from now.

There’s no prettier time of year than Peak Season in the High Country. And BRMC is no exception, offering every kind of hue for 50 miles in virtually any direction. So it’s no wonder that many of our part-time residents are becoming full-time, trading their permanent home in favor of their vacation one. Additionally, many of our newest residents wanted what we sometimes call a “toothbrush-ready” home, in other words, all you need to bring is your toothbrush and your new home is ready and waiting. At Blue Ridge Mountain Club, we’re offering all manner of “toothbrush-ready” or “off the shelf” homes, as well as, custom homes and cottages. Whatever your desires in your new home, we can help you embrace the magic of mountain living at Blue Ridge Mountain Club.
