Welcome Back!
Levack Public School staff and students are looking forward to another great year ahead. Levack is fortunate to offer French Immersion at all grade levels and English with Core French offered daily beginning in Grade 4. The school continues to focus on high academic standards within a safe and welcoming learning environment. As the sign outside the main office states, the school is proud of its community of learners who are indeed ―the best in the world‖.
At Levack student achievement is celebrated each and every day. With the recent addition of annual grade 8 award plaques students are reminded of past graduates and their accomplishments. There have been many other enhancements to the school meant to foster a place of learning where students are made to feel important and valued. In addition to the vibrant student population there are classes and programs that are unique to Levack Public School including an instrumental music program; the public speaking competition supported by the local Legion, a cross-country Mini-Thon and Entrepreneurship Fair just to name a few. Activities including ―Rock Band‖, a study of First Nations Art and a French-speaking singing competition, ―Franco-Rainbow‖, are just a snippet of the art-infused activities that contribute to the life and spirit of the school. Students returning to school in September will see the many improvements made to the building both inside and out. In addition to the painting of all exterior doors and railings, over one hundred windows are being replaced with environmentally friendly tinted glass to keep the school cooler during the warmer months and warmer during cold winter days. A large section of roofing was also replaced over the summer with improvements made to the flashing. The school welcomes these renovations and other future projects meant to maintain and improve the existing facility. There are a few important events happening at Levack Public School early in September including the school‘s Open House BBQ taking place on Thursday, September 12, 2013, beginning at 5:00 pm. Staff and students at Levack will join other Rainbow Schools and wear pink on Thursday, September 12, 2013, as Rainbow District School Board marks its sixth ―Stand Up Against Bullying Day‖. Levack will show its commitment to safe schools and they invite everyone in the community to wear pink on this day. On Monday, October 7, 2013, the school will welcome Jeremy Dias to the school to meet with teachers and speak to students on the important topic of equity and inclusion. Jeremy has been featured on Canada AM, Much Music, CTV News, Global News and CBC News; and has been a keynote speaker at countless conferences and events. The school is fortunate to have such a highly distinguished guest speaker share his experiences with students. The school continues to be an important part of the community offering pre-school daycare as well as a Before and After School Program for children. If you would like additional information about the daycare please contact 705-966-7474. The school is also looking forward to continuing to open its doors to the Chelmsford Best Start Child and Family Hub by offering a ―Kids in Motion‖ program for pre-school children and families. Maintaining strong ties with the community remains an important aspect of the life and spirit at Levack Public School. Principal Stephen Winckel looks forward to starting his second year as principal and has appreciated the ongoing support he has been receiving from parents and community members. While it is important to honour the past, Principal Winckel and the staff at Levack Public School have made strides to brand the school as the ―new‖ home of the Leopard. September is always an exciting time and future news stories will be shared with the public through ORACLE. For more information about the school and for updates on student activities you are invited to visit the school‘s website:

COPs—Citizens on Patrol
Citizens on Patrol (COPs) is a unique and innovative crime prevention program that involves trained
volunteers who conduct mobile observations of their neighbourhoods. They operate specially marked
vehicles and report suspicious or concerning behaviour to Police for follow up via mobile radio. It‘s like
Neighbourhood Watch on wheels, and it allows for an extra set of eyes and ears in the community.
Future plans!
If there is enough interest, we would like to start a program in the Levack/Onaping area using the Levack
satellite police station as a base.
Who qualifies?
Our volunteer base consists of a variety of ages and occupations, ranging from students to married couples to retirees. We are looking for
community minded individuals who are 18 years of age or older, who will pass a police background check, and who can commit 12 hours per
month to the program.
How do I find out more?
The COPs liaison police officer and the GSPS Volunteer Coordinator are making a presentation to the Onaping Falls Community Action
Network on September 19, and we will have information and applications on hand.
50 Years!
Congratulations to Pat & Judy Tremblay as they celebrate
their 50th Wedding Anniversary on August 31.
May you have many more happy years together!

Last month‘s puzzle answers:
The 1st Annual I.J. Coady Arena Golf Tournament
Thank you to all who came out and supported our Levack Arena golf tournament. The weather was beautiful and the golfers were in fine form. At tee off time, we had a total of 13 teams and 52 golfers. Thank you to our volunteers Carole, Leslie, Shanleigh & Malaya. They were a great help! At the end of the day, the 1st Annual I.J. Coady Memorial Arena Golf Tournament brought in $2,778. This money will go towards increasing the ice usage at the Arena by supporting our Onaping Falls Minor Hockey Association. Thank you to the sponsors and prize donors. Most are local businesses and individuals in our community.

contracted a local Sudbury
inspector to go into each of
the townhouses and
completely test the air

doing the work opened each unit and inspected from top to bottom of each
one. The final result was a clean bill of health for all units. In addition, new
signage was put up offering the units for sale again—with a higher price!

Cathy’s Artistic Cuts
Cathy Hartling, Christine Lavergne and Amanda Brouse proudly announce that Cathy‘s
Artistic Cuts is moving to the Onaping Plaza on September 4.
What started out as a simple barber shop in the late 1940‘s (run by Sterling Girouard &
Luke Markovich) then passed into Claire‘s Hairdressing then passed on to Lucy‘s and then
to Cathy‘s Artistic Cuts in 2010 will soon be an empty shell. There‘s a lot of history in that
building and while we rejoice in our history, it is exciting news that Cathy, Christine and
Amanda will continue to support our community.
Their new location in the Onaping Plaza (in the former Pirate‘s Loot) will welcome everyone on September 4. In this location, the ladies have
transformed the former store into an oasis of pampering for the whole family! Not only will everyone ―get beautified‖ by three talented
professionals but the surroundings will provide you with an atmosphere of relaxation.
Cathy (with 16 years of experience) will continue to provide her clients with excellent service as she did in her former location. Christine (with
4 years of experience) will continue to assist with all of your beauty needs. Amanda (with 1 year of experience) will pamper you with
manicures, pedicures and all of your waxing needs.
In addition to their services, the ladies will also offer a playroom for the children so you can bring them with you while you are pampered! The
services are also available to the men in our community! If you think for one minute that a manicure and/or a pedicure are for women only,
you are missing out on one of life‘s fabulous guilty pleasures. Come on guys—try it!!
“Cathy’s Artistic Cuts” will still have the same telephone number - 705-966-2766
Amanda’s “Esthetics by Amanda” can also be reached at the same number AND 705-507-8466
No more stairs to climb to enter the shop! No annoying rusty metal gate to get around! The new location is on level ground AND lots of
parking with no street to cross! A location and services you are sure to enjoy for years to come!
Watch for an announcement of their Grand Opening celebration—soon!

History Book
The Story of Onaping Falls
Robert P. Trott
Chapter 16 Onaping was the new kid on the block. Overshadowed by the long rich histories of Dowling and Levack, Falconbridge Nickel quietly moved into what was called West Levack Mine in 1951. Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited had had this west end property since 1935. Surveys had been made and some diamond drilling done over the years. By 1950 the decision had been made and plans drawn up to mine the area. In 1951 the contractors moved in; a diesel-electric generating station was set up, a temporary bunkhouse and cookery was built on the site, the shaft was collared and later the mill foundation started. The area was named, Hardy, after the first president of the company and the few houses that were built in 1952 was called Hardy Townsite. A permanent bunkhouse, cookery, First Aid Station and Staff House was built across the road from the mine in 1952. When the Hardy shaft was collared in 1951 there were three graves by the headframe. In 1954 it was necessary to have these moved. Dick Ogle, First-aid man at the mine was one of the people present when Jackson and Barnard moved the remains to Sudbury. A man, a woman and a child possibly eight or nine years old had been buried there. A cross at the head of the man‘s grave gave the date 1919. W.J. Bill Light, Personnel and Townsite Supervisor at Falconbridge was also in charge of the Townsite at Hardy; Earle Jarvis was his assistant. Bill had his hands full doing personnel work plus organizing the day to day activities of the Falconbridge Townsite so the guiding of Hardy Area was mainly in the hands of Earle Jarvis and local management. Earle would come out to the Hardy Area at different times during the week to assure that the building of the first houses at the bottom of Fraser Avenue and the other facilities for housing the contractors and FNM personnel was going as per plan and on schedule. It was decided early in the project that the Townsite to be built to house the workers that would be developing, mining and milling the ore in the Hardy area would be different from the normal mining town concept. One only has to visit Cobalt, Kirkland Lake, Timmins or Virginia Town to ―feel‖ the environment and see a typical selection of houses and stores that reflect the hit and miss attitude that prevailed in this tough industry. During the good times whole rows of dwellings and streets were built to supply the demand of more men needed to get the ore out and process it. Because of past experiences with the mining industry, the air of only being temporary was a common feeling. In the towns mentioned above, many quickly built temporary shelter houses were thrown up but are still standing today; on many, the roof has been raised to make an upstairs, a piece has been added to the back and a leanto carport sags against a side wall.

We Get Letters
ORACLE welcomes letters from our readers. Please be aware that we will not print your letter without your name!
Dear Don,
I wanted to congratulate you on the newly created Rio Encore theatre now open at the far end of the Onaping Community Centre. The sign
is beautiful and very easy to read from the road, along with the great new New 2 U clothing sign. (Enter at the door beside the sign.)
I would like to thank everyone who helped create and put up the signs, along with the folks who donated furniture to make the Rio Encore
such a welcoming and comfortable theatre. Thanks go out to the CAN committee for providing the great new Blu Ray machine for showing the
movies; it looks great mounted on the ceiling, leaving more room for seating and movement. The $1 snacks are a big hit with the children
(okay, with everyone) and make the whole experience more fun for all.
Thank you Don for doing the work needed to bring all this about for us here in Onaping Falls. Now all we need is for everyone to pass the
word on that Don has provided and is continuing to provide some wonderful movies for all ages. Pick up a poster or the Oracle to see 'what's
playing' each week and join us for a fun evening or afternoon, Fridays and Saturdays.
Oh did I mention that this great experience is free of charge?
Again thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, especially Don Henwood, Oracle Editor,
Sincerely,
Chris Allen
