Avalon Mall lower level - after

The Avalon Mall opened its doors on April 24, 1967. At the time, it was only one-story and housed 35 stores. Since that day, it has undergone three major extensions in 1977, 1987 and 1999. In 2005 the food court, washrooms, entrances and exterior of the mall underwent major renovations. In 2018, Crombie REIT decided to start a multi-year redevelopment plan that is again changing the space and feel of the mall. Interior renovations, building expansions, extended parking areas and revised intersections offer easier access to the facility.

rcs has been involved in a number of projects related to the recent redevelopment of the mall and currently has two projects ongoing: “Phase 1 – Interior and Exterior Renovations” and “Phase 2 – Interior and Exterior Renovations”. The renovations consists of upgrades to the finishes of all interior common areas, including new contemporary ceramic floor tile, new ceilings with modern acoustic ceiling tile, intermediate linear bulkheads, and updated LED linear lighting.

The main entrance to the food court has been relocated, and the old area is being expanded to include a new window façade that will provide an abundance of natural light to the area. New glass railing systems will be installed throughout both phases. The lower level marketplace has received new Hunter Douglas linear ceiling finishes, which will be continued into the corridor of Phase 2. Centre court will receive some high-end finishes, including modular art walls, glass wall panels, and fused white gold column covers. The old ramp area will be reconfigured to include seating areas and will be a main focal point.

Completion of Phase 1 is scheduled for September 2019, and Phase 2 will wrap up in April 2020. rcs is proud to be a part of this plan to re-invigorate the entire shopping experience at the Avalon Mall for years to come.AV

When I interview potential employees or am discussing goals and achievements with our current team members, I always use the line “there’s no ceiling at rcs”, meaning, you get out of the job what you put into it! Chris is a perfect example of this. Chris and I first teamed up as a Site Super and PM combo in 2012 on the Sobeys Refresh Program projects where we did 15 live renovations throughout Nova Scotia. I knew right away Chris was a ‘True Blue and Green’ employee that followed ACT (Accountability, Teamwork and Communication) to a T.

Chris began his career with rcs as a Site Superintendent back in 1998 and has been with us for over 20 years! Under the leadership of Senior Construction Manager, Owen Young, Chris moved into the role of Project Manager and is excelling! Mr. Barkhouse is an inspiration to everyone at rcs; his dedication and attention to our Philosophy are exemplary.

Chris has a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and a Bachelor of Science in Survey Engineering from the University of New Brunswick. Chris is also working toward his Gold Seal for Project Management. Here is a short list of some of the great projects Chris has recently executed:

• Ultramar & McDonald’s Base Build - St. Stephen, NB• Ren’s Pets Base Build - Dieppe, NB• Great Canadian Dollar Store Base Build, Gateway Mall - Sussex, NB• Lorneville Irving Base Build & Fit-Up - Saint John, NB• NB Cannabis Base Build & Fit-Up - Rothesay, NB• TD Bank Call Centre Renovation - Saint John, NB• Sobeys Base Build & Fit-Up - West Royalty, PE• Irving Renovation - Saint John, NB• Superstore Mall Landlord Work - Moncton, NB• ANBL Base Build and Fit-Up - Millidgeville, NB

Ashley ConradSafety Manager

A consistent visitor on each of our job sites, Ashley is often found chatting with the members of our site team, helping them take an active role in keeping everyone safe. Ashley’s passion for safety comes from the heart and clearly became her path after her brother suffered a debilitating workplace injury. She took her frustration and channelled it into making it her mission to prevent anyone else from meeting the same fate. Ashley is a graduate of NSCC’s Occupational Health & Safety program and first came to rcs through her work-term placement. It was clear pretty quickly that we didn’t want her to leave us at the end of her 5 weeks, so we hired her as Safety Assistant. Fast forward 5 years and we are proud to call her our Safety Manager! “Safety Ashley” treats each employee as if they are family and genuinely cares that they are working as safely as possible. Since joining us, Ashley has been dedicated to her professional development and has earned her CSS (Construction Safety Supervisor), Gold Seal in Construction Safety Coordinator, and is working toward her CRSP. Her dedication to the field of safety and to all who enter an rcs building or job site is greatly appreciated!

In the continuous pursuit of fulfilling OUR VISION of being the BEST contractor, the BEST place to work and the BEST choice for your business, it only made sense that we keep evolving and upgrading by adopting the latest technologies in construction.

With so many software packages on the market, we needed to ensure we ended up with the right one for our business so we drilled down on 3 MEASURES to helpnarrow our search:

We are currently using the software’s tools to streamline our work-flow throughout the course of construction; from project kick-off to close-out. Tools like Meetings, Daily Log, Drawings, Submittals, Instructions, RFIs, Deficiency Lists, and Reports are working great to improve efficiency with standardized processes and seamless site to office communication in order to achieve project goals. RIDE FOR CANCER 2019Calista Kossatz - Marketing Coordinator

One in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; a harsh but true reality.

On Saturday, September 28, 7 rcs employees will join hundreds of riders who have fundraised thousands of dollars to cycle from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia to Halifax, Nova Scotia and various distances in between.

Powered by BMO Bank of Montreal and hosted in partnership by the QEII Foundation and The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, The Ride for Cancer is Atlantic Canada’s largest one day cycling fundraising event in our region.

All funds raised will go toward purchasing critical state-of-art cervical cancer diagnostic units; the most effective and minimally invasive way to diagnose and treat precancerous cell changes before they even develop into cancer, and Atlantic Canada’s first surgical robotic system giving prostate cancer patients shorter hospitals stay, less pain, and quicker recovery times. Most importantly decreasing the risk of the cancer advancing or reoccurring.

Money raised from the Ride will also be going toward ground-breaking research to discover new treatments and cures for blood cancer as well as individualized support programs for cancer patients and their families through The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

To learn more about Ride for Cancer or to sponsor our team or any other participant, please visit YourRideForCancer.ca.

Plaid for Dad2019Jessica Robinson - Marketing & Social Media Assistant

This June, rcs went Plaid for Dad in support of Prostate Cancer Canada! We were proud to play a part in this campaign that was started to help raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer. As part of our fundraising, we offered our co-workers the chance to giftwrap someone’s office space. In our Bedford office, Mike Mallory in Estimating was the lucky winner; as you can see below, he was thrilled with the result! Both of our other office locations cleverly voted for flex-office spaces. We also offered our colleagues the chance to guess the number of candy balls in a jar at each of our offices. Congratulations goes to Heather Moffatt in Bedford, NS; Justin Jordan in St. John’s, NL; and Lee Henwood in Moncton, NB for their excellent estimating abilities! Thank you to everyone who helped us raise money for this campaign and we look forward to joining again next summer!

We are also proud to announce that both Ashley Conrad and myself have become certified in Mental Health First Aid enabling us to provide immediate support and guidance to anyone in need safely and effectively in an open forum.

This month marks our 20th Annual rcs Golf Tournament and it is an effort we are sincerely proud of. We are firm believers in supporting our communities in whatever way we can and throughout the years, we have supported many charities.

This year, our golf tournament is pleased to have chosen the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia as our charitable recipient. Andrew Doucet, a member of rcs’ Leadership Team brought this charity forward as he is a proud member of the Board of the Mental Health Foundation. Through some fun and shenanigans on golf day, we are looking forward to raising money with the help of clients and friends of rcs, like yourselves!

largest Volkswagen dealership east of Montreal for our friends at rcs, and mill work for the CBCL office in the Maritime Centre for Arguson Projects. These are only a few of the exciting projects we have on the books and we continue to bid more! I have one final bit of news to share with all of you - we are proud to announce that we have a new Shop Foreman, Greg Brown. Greg started with MRW earlier this year as an Assistant Cabinet Maker before moving to CNC Operator. Since then Greg has shown that he is a natural leader with great potential. We are always proud to promote from within and we know Greg will accomplish great things with both our staff and clients. If you have not met Greg already, feel free to drop by!

Summer is finally here!

Greetings again from MRW and happy summer to all! As many of you are aware, construction tends be a cyclical industry, but here at Mill-Right we are lucky to be busy all year long. We went through a lot of changes in the Spring and we are ready to take our projects to the next level.

We have an intense and exciting production schedule to take us through summer with projects across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. We are proud to be doing the signature fixtures for the NSLC in both Amherst and Yarmouth; these projects have a lot of integrated metal work; and ice wells and signage incorporated throughout to fit the needs of the end user.

Next on the list is a substantial project for Prince County Hospital in PEI. This project includes everything from clean and soiled utility rooms to nurses stations to reception desks. Other projects coming down the line include common area mill work at The Charles I and The Charles II on Larry Uteck for Universal Properties, mill work for the
