Billy Boy Arnold is one of the first Windy City Blues singers actually born in
Chicago. Arnold learned to play his “Mississippi Saxophone” from the
original Sonny Boy Williamson in the late 1940s. Recorded in London,

energy. This album represents one of the finest fusions of authentic
electric Chicago Blues and the London Rock-infused variety of the genre.
At the time of it’s original release in 1977, the then influential magazine
Black Echoes voted the record “Blues LP of the Year”.

Welcome to Bluesletter 112
We know many who received the free MIG sampler enjoyed the CD as we had a good deal of orders for
MIG label CDs. We hope to be able to do a similar thing with other record labels in the future.
There are a plethora of new releases at present but unfortunately we haven’t been able to include all the
new CDs and DVDs we wanted to. Therefore if you have read a review or know of a newly released CD or
DVD you want to buy, please drop us a line or better still give us a call on 01296 634991.
We have the 2006 Storm Warning debut album ‘Breaking Out’ free for our members with this Bluesletter.
It has come to our attention that the second half of the last track on the album, ‘Whisky Blues’, is similar
in part to ‘The Meaning of The Blues’ by Joe Bonamassa on his recent ‘Dust Bowl album. A complete
co incidence and both quality blues/rock songs. Have a listen and see if you agree. There are more details
on UK band Storm Warning and up and coming gigs below. You can also visit www.stormwarning.co.uk

Acoustic Blues, Electric Roots And More - New & Recent Releases
Carolina Chocolate Drops - Leaving Eden £11.99 - Carolina Chocolate Drops
have proved that the old-time fiddle and banjo-based music they'd so
scrupulously researched and passionately perform can be a living, breathing,
contemporary sound. They don't seek to merely revive songs from the past as
much as freshly interpret them. Title track ‘Leaving Eden’, an elegiac piece
recounting the falling fortunes of a North Carolina mill town, is sung with
plainspoken eloquence by Giddens and underscored by McCalla's mournful cello.
Giddens takes an overtly bluesy turn on Ethel Waters' 1920's-era wry confession,
‘No Man's Mama’, and she brings a hip hop-style, declamatory flair to her self-
penned ‘Country Girl’, egged on by Matta's beat-boxing. Though often striking out in new directions, CCD
returns to familiar turf with tracks like ‘Riro's House’, a traditional banjo and fiddle piece learned from
their mentor, North Carolinian fiddle player Joe Thompson, and bolstered by a rousing fife-and-drum
groove. They pay tribute to the venerable Piedmont guitarist and banjo player, Etta Baker, adapting
words to one of Baker's vintage melodies on ‘West End Blues’. And Flemons creates a lively new
arrangement of ‘Mahalla’, a joyfully melodic piece by spoon-wielding South African slide guitarist, Hannes
Coetzee. Also in stock: Carolina Chocolate Drops - Genuine Negro Jig £12.99

Watkins is a fan of the low-down, hard-stompin', railroad-smokin' blues.
Her feel- good sessions in the late 50s and early 60s may have ignited the
spark that fueled the British Invasion. She'll tell you, "People are impressed
to see a black woman play like a man." A guitar slinger from birth, she
performs on the streets of Atlanta by blowing the crowds away with her
unadulterated brand of blues. This is a highly charged record by this
powerful performer. Originally released in 1999.
This is a rare CD and we are sure this is the cheapest price in the UK. Only 4 available at this price.
Terry Evans – Live Like A Hurricane £8.99 - Over an hour live recording in an intimate club. Evans is
animated, whooping and hollering with obvious passion and the band plays with conviction. He's in fine
gutsy voice throughout, ripping into a selection of his most potent gospel-laced Southern R&B with a
tight band in front of an enthusiastic audience. Only 5 available at this low price.
