Though our communities are special in their own ways, their goal is unified: to provide people with the opportunity to live well. Whether it is staff members, residents, participants, caregivers, donors or volunteers, at Bluestem Communities we all find ways to live well together. We believe life has purpose at every age and each person has something valuable to share. In the following pages you’ll see the distinctiveness of each of our locations and also the common thread that ties us all together. We hope you’ll join us in the year ahead as we continue to explore what it means to live well at Bluestem Communities.

James Krehbiel, President/CEO2. 3.

Living Well Together: Uniqueness and Unity

Since its inception in 2012, Bluestem Communities has continued to become

clearer in its distinctive mission and purpose. At the same time, our three locations; Bluestem PACE, Kidron Bethel Village and Schowalter Villa, have continued to diversify and grow their own unique personalities by offering new services, living spaces and experiences. We believe the diversity of our communities is valuable and essential to creating an organization that gives every individual an opportunity to live well. Every one of us has unique interests, beliefs, experiences and preferences. The various services and programs we offer through our three locations allows those 55 and better to choose a community or service that best fits them.

In an effort to decrease our environmental impact, we are communicating more by EMAIL. Ensure that we’re up-to-date with your contact information by emailing us at [email protected].

Emilie Rains, Bluestem PACE director of market development and intake, did several on air interviews in 2018. You may have seen her on KWCH and KAKE news promoting the program’s innovative services and explaining how Bluestem PACE supports seniors and their caregivers. “We partner with folks 55 and better and their caregivers, helping them remain at home long term. That’s our plan. We do that by offering comprehensive medical services as well as supportive services,” explained Emilie on KWCH.

PACE Race 5KThe weather could not have been more perfect for the inaugural PACE Race 5K on Sept. 15 this past year in McPherson, KS. Over 50 runners and walkers of all ages showed up on the warm and sunny morning in support of Bluestem PACE. Thanks to the race participants and 18 area sponsors, the event raised over $4,500 for the Bluestem PACE Good Neighbor Fund. The fund assists PACE participants who encounter unforeseen circumstances and assists Bluestem PACE in providing high quality services.

Partnering with CaregiversCaring for an aging loved one is an undertaking. Providing that care in the home can be a challenge and, often, is most successful when the caregiver is supported by a team of professionals who can partner with the family. Maryln Minor of Hutchinson knows firsthand the benefits of having a supportive team as she cares for her husband, Butch Minor. Maryln says Bluestem PACE makes it possible for her to continue living her daily life while still having her husband live at home. “With me as a caregiver to Butch, it has reduced my stress by knowing that he is taken care of throughout the day. I can continue my job, activities and housework. It has helped me all over,” explained Maryln.

By serving McPherson, Reno, Harvey, Saline, Marion and Rice counties, Bluestem PACE is providing caregiver relief to families all over central Kansas.“The Bluestem PACE team partners with program participants and their families to coordinate all medical services and appointments,” said Emilie Rains, Bluestem PACE director of market development and intake. “This allows participants to remain safely in their homes as long as possible, while preventing caregiver burnout.”

Innovative TherapyA cutting-edge therapy is making a huge difference in the life of Bluestem PACE participants—blood flow restriction therapy. The evidence-based approach originated in the 60’s amongst body builders in Japan and is currently being used with athletes in the NBA and NFL.

Chris Deck, physical therapist at Bluestem PACE, has been in the field for 22 years and figured that this groundbreaking therapy should work amongst the senior population as well. “I have practiced in many different settings and I have never seen gains like this,” explained Chris. “We have participants in the program who are making 60 percent improvements with just a couple of treatments.” Chris said the therapy works by doing three different things. It increases electricity to the muscle, targets specific muscle fibers and promotes growth and healing in the muscle. Annie Watt-Holt, Bluestem PACE participant, says the therapy has made a huge difference in her life. “I can do things that I could not do two and a half months ago. He is helping me work with what I have to have a better life,” she said. Chris said the main benefit of the therapy is decreasing the chance of participants falling. “We have used it as a foundational tool for people to be able to get stronger faster. As their strength improves, we are able to build on that to improve their balance and reduce their risk of falling,” said Chris.

Kidron Bethel Village Earns Zero Deficiencies RatingIn 2018, Kidron Bethel Village earned zero deficiencies on their annual state survey, which is conducted by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). This rating indicates that Kidron Bethel Village met both Kansas and federal regulations that are required to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. “This is a powerful affirmation of the team that provides care and services every day on every shift and their dedication to the residents who choose to live at Kidron Bethel Village,” said Linda Peters, executive director. “It takes each person in every department to create this result.”

Expanding Campus Woods EstatesKidron Bethel Village expanded its independent living neighborhood, Campus Woods Estates, this past year. The expansion focused on developing Lakewood Circle, a new entrance on Anderson avenue and a community recreational area. The expansion doubled the lots available to build on, adding 8 duplexes (16 homes) and a pickleball court in the new recreational area.

“We are excited to offer expanded living options as well as new and exciting recreational opportunities to the North Newton community,” said James Krehbiel, President/CEO of Bluestem Communities.

Making a DifferenceWith a combination of giving time and resources, many people have made a difference in the lives of Kidron Bethel Village residents this year. Friends of Kidron, the Kidron Bethel Village auxiliary, raised $14,409 for the Healthcare Benevolent Fund. The fund assists residents who find themselves in an unplanned circumstance where they are unable to cover the full cost of their care. Volunteers continue to enrich the Kidron Bethel Village community and selflessly serve residents who call it home. In 2018, there were 136 total volunteers who gave a total of 5,101 hours of their time.

“We would like to extend immense gratitude to all of our volunteers who make such a huge impact in the daily lives of our residents and community,” said Rachel Bucklin, community outreach coordinator for Bluestem Communities.

A Community AffairAs in year’s past, Kidron Bethel Village continued to host community events on their campus in 2018. The Fireworks Extravaganza, Gathering in the Garden, Country Breakfast and the Holiday Marketplace were all a success this year.

The Fireworks Extravaganza is North Newton’s only firework show, so the annual event draws a large crowd. This year was the biggest crowd yet with an estimated 3,000 in attendance. New in 2018 was a bubble machine, selfie booth and Kidron Konies—Kidron Bethel’s specialty hotdog topped with German slaw. A record number of community sponsors this year made the event possible. We hope to see you this July 4th!

Mullet Place at Schowalter Villa OpensSept. 7, 2018 was a monumental day for Schowalter Villa. The opening ceremony of Mullet Place, a vision that had been years in the making, was finally happening and the event drew a crowd of over 400 people. The driving motivation for the new building was to create private homes for every Schowalter Villa resident. Mullet Place provides residents with 24 new assisted living homes, resulting in 40 total assisted living homes and 98 private health care rooms on campus. In addition to homes, Mullet Place includes two new classrooms for the Hesston Child Development Center, a gift shop and Hesston Bakery & Cafe.

“Mullet Place at Schowalter Villa is a place for people of all stages of life to come together,” said James Krehbiel, President/CEO of Bluestem Communities. “We are excited for what this space offers not only to our residents but the entire community.”

The $6.1 million project was made possible through the generosity of over 270 donors from Hesston and around the country.

“We are incredibly thankful to all who believed in the mission of Schowalter Villa and supported our vision of creating a private home for every resident,” said Yvonne Sieber, chief philanthropy officer for Bluestem Communities.

The project ground breaking occurred in April of 2017. Hutton Construction was the selected contractor and Alloy Architecture was the project architect.

Continuing Award-winning Dementia CareSince 2016, Schowalter Villa has been providing innovative dementia services through Comfort Matters®. The evidence-based program improves the quality of care and quality of life for persons with dementia.

“It is vital that Schowalter Villa integrate best practices in caring for persons diagnosed with dementia,” said Treva Greaser, executive director of Schowalter Villa. “Being accredited as a Comfort Matters® provider demonstrates our commitment to embed care practices into our organization that provide the best quality of care and quality of life for persons with dementia.”

To continue offering services, Schowalter Villa undergoes an annual reaccreditation process. The reaccreditation includes an intense review of Schowalter Villa’s practices, pertinent medical records, verification of staff competencies and adoption of Comfort Matters® policies and procedures as it pertains to the care given to residents in North Meadows, the dementia care neighborhood at Schowalter Villa.

Community Impact and OutreachFor more than 55 years, Schowalter Villa has remained a pillar of the Hesston community and the surrounding area. Villa Days, the Garden Party and many other events throughout the year have become annual traditions for many families. These events support the Good Samaritan Caring Fund, which assists residents in covering the full cost of their care.

In 2018, Villa Partners raised over $43,000 for the Good Samaritan Caring Fund as well as other resident-centered projects. Also, 283 volunteers consisting of residents, surrounding area community members, youth, and staff put in 17,395 hours volunteering at Schowalter Villa. None of these things would be possible without the many people who give of their time and energy and believe in the mission of Schowalter Villa.

“Our volunteers are a vital part of our organization’s ongoing mission, and we honestly could not function effectively without each volunteer’s compassionate heart and helping hands,” said Rachel Bucklin, community outreach coordinator for Bluestem Communities.

Our partners in mission

A record number of businesses and individuals sponsored the 2018 annual Bluestem Communities Gala, which was held at the Meridian Center on Nov. 1. With over 250 attendees and 21 sponsors, the gala resulted in $68,000 raised for individuals who cannot cover the full cost of their care. “Quality care for every senior, regardless of their financial means, is a mission of Bluestem Communities,” said James Krehbiel, President/CEO of Bluestem Communities. “This year at the Bluestem Gala the community joined us in that mission and it was touching to see.” New this year at the gala was a raffle ticket drawing for a vacation for two.

The award-winning duo Ryanhood was the featured entertainment for the evening. The Arizona musicians are known for their two-part vocal harmonies and energetic flares on the guitar, ukulele and mandolin. Dinner was catered by Hesston Bakery & Cafe and Water’s Edge and was served by Hesston and Bethel College students as well as community volunteers. “I am amazed and humbled by the communities’ willingness to support our benevolence funds— not just through the Bluestem Communities Gala but throughout the year,” said James. “Many of our residents and participants have influenced our communities in a positive way. This is all about giving back to those who have given so much to us.”
