NETWORK CONFIGURATION OVERVIEW
WHAT TO BRING TO THE CUSTOMER’S SITE
There are a few items that you will want to bring with you to the customer’s site to use in the network
configuration process. These include:
• A computer with an Ethernet card and the Lantronix Device Installer software installed.
• An Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the customer’s switch or router.
• (Optional) In some instances, it is useful to be able to connect the computer directly to the
controller. We recommend a cross-over cable for this purpose, but if one is not available, a
regular Ethernet cable may suffice.
CONFIGURE NETGEN DOOR CONTROLLERS ON THE NETWORK
To configure the NetGen door controllers on the network, there are three (3) different options to choose
from. Discuss these options with the customer’s IT network administrator to decide which option is best
for their facility.
Option 1 (Recommended): Have the IT network administrator assign a range of static IP addresses
for the controllers and use the Lantronix Device Installer utility to configure each controller.
Option 2: Use DHCP IP addresses and have the IT network administrator assign an IP address in the
router’s DHCP reservation table for each controller’s MAC address.
Option 3: Get the range of static IP addresses and send them to Bluewave Security to have the door
controllers configured before being shipped from the factory (must be approved and arranged in
advance).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Choose only ONE of the options above and see the following sections for
detailed instructions.
3
NETWORK CONFIGURATION – STATIC IP
ASSIGNING STATIC IP ADDRESSES
Each NetGen Ethernet door controller is pre-configured to use DHCP to obtain a dynamic IP address.
Each unit has a label on it containing its factory network configuration and MAC address. The MAC
address can be used to identify NetGen door controllers on the network.
The recommended method of configuring the NetGen door controllers is with a static IP address on the
network. The customer’s IT network administrator must allocate a range of static IP addresses on the
network to be assigned to each door controller.
The first task that should be completed is to make a list of the MAC addresses of the devices along with
the door controller location. When the network administrator gives you a list of the static IP addresses
for the network, add these to your device list. You will also need to get the Subnet Mask and Default
Gateway from the network administrator.
DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL LANTRONIX DEVICE INSTALLER
The networking component on the NetGen devices is manufactured by Lantronix. Lantronix provides a
utility called the Device Installer to configure each NetGen door controller’s network settings. Install
this utility on a networked computer at the customer’s site to configure the door controllers. The Device
Installer utility is available as a download from the Lantronix web site by clicking on the following link:
http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/utilities-tools/device-installer.html
START THE LANTRONIX DEVICE INSTALLER
Once the Lantronix Device Installer is installed on the network computer, open the application and click
on the “Search” button. The utility will go out and search for any door controllers on the network.
Important Note: Device Installer will ONLY be able to discover NetGen door controllers that have IP
addresses in the same subnet as the computer that Device Installer is running on.
All of the NetGen door controllers found on the network will be displayed. The NetGen HW1 devices
will be displayed under XPort heading. NetGen HW2 devices will be displayed under the heading
XPort Pro. The devices will be listed under the headings by their DHCP-assigned IP addresses. By
clicking on the individual IP address, you can view the information on the device on the right side of the
screen.
The MAC address (called the Hardware Address in the Lantronix Device Installer), can be used to
identify a specific NetGen door controller. This can be matched up to the controller MAC address found
on the factory label attached to the device (see the device list you created).
4
Note: If the NetGen controller is not found by the Device Installer, check that the NetGen controller has
a green LED lit where the CAT5 cable connects to the NetGen. If the LED is not green, use a paper clip
or other small wire to depress the Reset Button for 2 seconds. If this does not resolve the problem, then
troubleshoot possible cable, wiring or network configuration problems before proceeding.
5
ASSIGN THE STATIC IP ADDRESS TO THE DOOR CONTROLLER
In the Device Installer utility, select the NetGen door controller you want to assign an IP address to.
Click the “Assign IP” button. Select the option to “Assign a specific IP address”. Click <Next> to
continue.
Enter the assigned IP address, subnet mask and gateway for the door controller. Click <Next> to
continue.
6
Click <Assign> to complete the assignment. When the assignment completes successfully, click
<Finish> to close.
If the IP address has been assigned successfully, the DHCP-assigned IP address, listed in the left
column, should have been replaced with the newly assigned static IP address.
7
Continue assigning the static IP addresses to the remaining door controllers. When complete, test the
connection on the network to be sure you can communicate with the controllers. See the last section in
this guide, “Confirm the Controller is on the Network” for an easy way to do this.
You will then need to download and install the BlueView software and configure the Sites, Areas and
Doors with the location of the door controllers and assigned IP addresses. For further instructions on
this process, see the “BlueView Software Install & Configuration Guide”.
Be sure that the list of the door locations, MAC address and assigned IP addresses are kept in a secure
location for future reference.
8
NETWORK CONFIGURATION – DHCP
ASSIGNING DHCP IP ADDRESSES
Each NetGen Ethernet door controller is pre-configured to use DHCP to obtain a dynamic IP address.
Each unit has a label on it containing its factory network configuration and MAC address. The MAC
address can be used to identify NetGen door controllers on the network.
In configuring the NetGen door controllers, an alternative method to using static IP addresses is using
automatically-assigned DHCP IP addresses.
If using this method, the first task that should be completed is to make a list of the MAC addresses of the
devices along with the door controller locations. You will need to give this list to the customer’s IT
network administrator who will then enter the controller’s MAC addresses into their DHCP table to get
the IP addresses. When the network administrator gives you the list back, it should have the assigned
DHCP IP addresses added for each door controller.
Once the DHCP IP addresses are assigned, test the connection on the network to be sure you can
communicate with the controllers. See the last section in this guide, “Confirm the Controller is on the
Network” for an easy way to do this.

NETWORK CONFIGURATION – BLUEWAVE ASSIGNED IP ADDRESSES
BLUEWAVE ASSIGNING IP ADDRESSES
Each NetGen Ethernet door controller is pre-configured to use DHCP to obtain a dynamic IP address.
Each unit has a label on it containing its factory network configuration and MAC address. The MAC
address can be used to identify NetGen door controllers on the network.
For very small locations that may have limited staff, another option for configuring the NetGen door
controllers, is to have Bluewave Security assign the static IP addresses to the door controller before they
are shipped from the factory. This method should be approved and arranged in advance with your
Bluewave Security contact. You will still need to get a list of static IP addresses from the IT network
administrator.
If using this method, the first task that should be completed is to make a list of the specific locations the
door controllers will be installed and the static IP addresses that will be assigned to each location. Send
that list to your contact at Bluewave Security. Bluewave will assign the IP addresses to the controllers
and add the corresponding device MAC addresses to your controller list. This updated list will be
shipped with the controllers to your facility for installation.
Once the controllers are installed in the assigned locations, test the connection on the network to confirm
you can communicate with the controllers. See the last section in this guide, “Confirm the Controller is
on the Network” for an easy way to do this.
The next step is to download and install the BlueView software on a networked computer at the location.
Use the BlueView software to configure the Sites, Areas and Doors with the location of the door
controllers and assigned IP addresses. For further instructions on this process, see the “BlueView
Software Install & Configuration Guide”.
Be sure that the list of the door locations, MAC address and assigned IP addresses are kept in a secure
location for future reference.

CONFIRM THE CONTROLLER IS ON THE NETWORK
To confirm that the controller is on the network with the correct IP address, open a command prompt
application (on a Windows system, click Start, Run and enter “cmd”).
Ping the IP address to make sure it is on the network. To do this, type ping <IP address> and return.
Make sure you are getting a “Reply” back from the device. Type “exit” to close the command prompt
application.
