BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent is an agent-less Performance Manager forthe BMC Portal environment. It allows you to automatically discover and monitor every aspect of yourDell Compellent storage environment, from the general health of the device to the performance ofthe volumes and to consolidate diverse monitoring needs within the Portal framework through asingle solution.

Being a Performance Manager specifically designed for BMC Portal, BMC Performance ManagerExpress for Dell Compellent uses the Portal’s web-based interface and features for installing,managing and monitoring your infrastructure.

This chapter describes the prerequisites and the settings you need to configure before installing BMCPerformance Manager Express for Dell Compellent. Please follow the given instructions carefully inorder to ensure a successful integration of the solution within the Portal environment.

Prerequisites

Minimum Requirements

The computer on which you install BPM Express for Dell Compellent should already have:

1. BMC Performance Manager Portal version 2.8.x or higher

2. Access to an RSM i.e. Remote Service Monitor

3. Java 1.6 or higher (provided with BMC Portal 2.8.x or higher )

4. Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager 6.3

The RSM program must be installed on a Windows platform. This can either be same as the serverwhere the Portal is installed or, any other Windows computer on the network.

Once you install BPM Express for Dell Compellent, you can add as many elements as you need inyour monitoring environment.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent only supports Sun or Oracle Java VirtualMachines (JVMs). BMC Portal 2.8.x or higher is provided with a Sun JVM.

The file required for:

the installation of BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent is BPM-Express-for-Dell-Compellent-<version>.par. This file is valid for installation on Windows, UNIX andLinux.

the integration of BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent with BMC ProactiveNetPerformance Management is BPM-Express-for-Dell-Compellent-1.0.00-PM2BPPM.zip.

Please contact your BMC sales representative to purchase the license to use this product. Theproduct package is to be downloaded from the Sentry Software website on the BMC PerformanceManager Express for Dell Compellent product page.

How it works

Once BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent is installed in your Portal environment:

1. To start up the monitoring, add its corresponding application class to an element or elementprofile. The BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent application classes are listedunder the Storage category

2. Fill in Properties and Credentials information and click Next

3. Set the threshold parameters

4. Click Finish to validate.

Portal level

BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent is an agent-less solution designed specificallyfor BMC Portal. Therefore, it uses/shares/offers all the procedures, features and capabilities offeredin the Portal, like Element Profile, Shared credentials, Adding/Editing/Deleting classes etc.

BPPM level

Once installed and configured in your Portal environment, BMC Performance Manager Express forDell Compellent can be integrated into BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management to detectabnormalities on your monitored environment.

Dell Compellent Storage Center level

As described above, you need to enter certain information:

This chapter explains how to install and run BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellentfor BMC Portal.

As BPM Express for Dell Compellent is a performance manager specifically designed for the BMCPortal environment, it uses the Portal’s web-based interface and features for installing, managing andmonitoring your Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. The full integration with BMC Portalprovides a single customizable entry point for data from multiple sources and a single view thatenables you to monitor the health and performance of your infrastructure.

The installation procedure consists of two main steps:

Installing and configuring Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager

Installing the package.

Dell Compellent EnterpriseManagerDell Compellent Enterprise Manager allows you to monitor, manage, and analyze Storage Centersfrom a centralized management console. It consists of the following components:

Data Collector: Data Collector is a service that gathers reporting data and alerts from allStorage Centers. There are two types of Data Collectors: Primary and Remote. All installationsmust include one primary Data Collector. Each Data Collector service (primary or remote) ismanaged using a Data Collector Manager.

Database: Data Collector stores data in a database or flat file. The database can run on thesame or a different platform from Data Collector.

Enterprise Manager Clients: An Enterprise Manager Client connects to the Data CollectorService to provide a centralized management console for one or more Storage Centers.Additional clients can be connected to the same Data Collector Service to provide managementfrom more than one location.

Server Agents: By installing a Server Agent for Microsoft Windows on each Windows serverusing a Storage Center, Data Collector can gather local volume information from a Windowsserver. Using this information, Enterprise Manager can free volume storage space from expiredReplays that would otherwise remain locked by Windows. Each Server Agent is managed by aServer Agent Manager.

This guide describes how to install and configure Enterprise Manager components. For moreinformation, please refer to the Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager documentation.

Requirements

Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.6 or higher (1.6Update 30 or higher recommended). On 64-bit systems both the 32-bit and the 64-bit JRE arerequired

9. Create the Administrator User that will be used to log on to the Enterprise Manager and clickNext.

10. The Enterprise Manager Data Collector setup is now complete. Click the URL to go to the DataCollector Website. Click Finish.

Installing Enterprise Manager ClientThe Enterprise Manager Client is a Windows application that connects to the Data Collector, allowingyou to view and manage multiple Storage Centers. You can install the client on the Data Collectorserver or a computer that has network connectivity to the Data Collector server.

To install Enterprise Manager Client:

1. Go to Data Collector Website. The default location for the website is: https://<emdc_hostname_ip>:<emdc_web_server_port> where:

<emdc_hostname_ip> is the host name or IP address of the server that hosts the DataCollector.

<emdc_web_server_port> is the Data Collector web service port; the default port is 3033.

The URL of the Data Collector Website is displayed in the Enterprise Manager Data Collector wizard when theinstallation is complete.

To install Enterprise Manager Server Agent:

1. Go to Data Collector Website. The default location for the website is: https://<emdc_hostname_ip>:<emdc_web_server_port> where:

<emdc_hostname_ip> is the host name or IP address of the server that hosts the DataCollector.

<emdc_web_server_port> is the Data Collector web service port; the default is 3033.

1. On the desktop, double-click the Enterprise Manager Client shortcut. The Login toCompellent Enterprise Manager Client window appears.

User Name: Enterprise Manager user that was created while installing Data Collector

Password: User's password

Host/IP: host name or IP address of the server that hosts the Data Collector.

Web Server Port: If you changed the Web Server Port during installation, enter the updatedport.

3. Click Log In. The Client connects to the Data Collector and displays the Storage (SAN/ANS) view.

Host Name: Host name or IP address of the Storage Center.

User Name: Name of an administrator user on the Storage Center.

Password: Password for the Storage Center user.

6. Click Finish. The Storage Center appears in the list of Storage Centers.

Installing BMC PerformanceManager Express for DellCompellentUploading BMC Performance Manager Express for DellCompellent to BMC Portal1. Place the BPM-Express-for-Dell-Compellent-<version>.par file in a known location on

your file system. Log in to the Portal with administration rights.

2. Click on Portal, then under Tasks click Performance Managers.

3. Click Upload and then click Browse to open a file selection dialog box.

4. Select BPM-Express-for-Dell-Compellent-<version>.par and click Upload.

5. The Portal installs the PAR file to the database, and BPM Express for Dell Compellent appears inthe list of Performance Managers.

6. The status Published next to BMC PM Express for Dell Compellent by Sentry Software inthe Performance Manager list indicates that the product is successfully installed. You are nowready to start using the product.

7. To begin using the new application classes, log on as a user, add an infrastructure element andselect the new application classes, or add the new application classes to existing elements.

Adding the Performance Manager toan Element Profile1. Log in to the Portal with normal user credentials.

2. Click Configure tab > Element Profiles. The Available Profiles page appears. Select theProfile to which you wish to add the Storage class > Edit.

3. The selected Element Profile’s Properties page appears. Go to Application Classes > Add.

4. The Element Profile Properties – Add Application Classes page appears. Choose Storagefrom the Select Category drop-down list.

5. Select the application class applicable to your system and click Next.

6. On the Properties and Credentials page, enter the information required for monitoring the

disk array:

Input Properties Description

Collection interval Select the polling interval from the drop-down list. Unit: Minutes.

The collection interval should be equal to or higher than the SMI-Sprovider refresh rate to prevent "No Data" values to be displayed in Portal.

Credentials Enter the login and password used to connect to the Dell Compellent EntrepriseManager

Hostname Enter the Hostname or IP address of the machine where the Dell CompellentEntreprise Manager is running.

Port Indicates the port number to connect to the Dell Compellent Entreprise Manager(default: 3033).

Oversubscription SituationThreshold (%)

Enter a threshold value (%) for the consumed capacity percentage that will set thesituation parameter to 1 (TRUE) and trigger a warning for thin and oversubscribedstorage pools. This parameter applies only to thin Storage Pool (An Alarm is triggeredwhen the subscribed capacity percent is greater than 100 % and the consumedcapacity is higher than 75 %).

Missing Device Detection By default, the missing device(s) will be detected and monitored. Setting the optionto No will deactivate the detection and the monitoring of the missing device(s).

Disable Volumes Monitoring Select an option [Yes|No] to enable/disable the monitoring of all volumes. When thevolumes monitoring is disabled, discovery and collect requests and operations are nolonger performed. By default, this option is not checked.

Disabling the monitoring of volumes impacts several other parameters forwhich values may no longer be available, such as Subscribed Capacity,Subscribed Capacity Percentage, Oversubscription Situation, and Volume Countof the Disk Folder application class.

Debug Mode "Yes" enables the debug mode. The debug output produced is stored on the RSMserver in a file located at"%RSM_HOME%\RSM(xx)\server\rsm\log\sen*_debug.log"on Windows systems or at "%RSM_HOME%/RSM(xx)/server/rsm/log/sen*_debug.log" on UNIX systems.

Input Properties Description

Please do not leave the debug mode enabled for too long as the debug file may growindefinitely.

7. Click Next. You arrive at the final step for adding the BPM Express for Dell Compellentapplication class: Thresholds, Properties and Credentials.

8. Thresholds are automatically set by BPM Express for Dell Compellent. It is recommended to keepthe default thresholds (or see the Thresholds section). Click Finish.

9. Click Done to save the changes made. The BPM Express for Dell Compellent application class isnow added to all the elements in the selected Element Profile.

Adding the Dell CompellentApplication Class to an ExistingElement1. Log in to the Portal with normal user credentials.

2. In the Configure tab, click the Element to which you wish to add the solution and theElement Properties page appears. Scroll down to Application Classes > Add. Make surethat the element's platform is defined as Storage.

3. On the Properties – <Element> – Add Application Classes page > Select Category >Storage.

4. In the available Application Class list, select the application class applicable to the element andclick Next.

4. The Properties and Credentials page appears asking for the information required formonitoring the disk array. Enter the username and password valid on the Dell CompellentEntreprise Manager.

5. Thresholds are automatically set by BPM Express for Dell Compellent. It is recommended thatyou leave the default thresholds as they are. Click Finish. Details on how to modify thresholdsare given in the Setting Thresholds chapter.

You can now return to the Status tab to view the monitoring of the element by BPM Express for DellCompellent.

Un-installing BMC PerformanceManager Express for DellCompellentThe procedure is the same as for any other Performance Manager installed on the Portal:

1. Delete all BPM Express for Dell Compellent application classes from all elements and elementprofiles

2. Remove BPM Express for Dell Compellent from the Performance Manager list of the Portal.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent cannot be un-installed unless all its applicationclasses are removed from each element.

Deleting Application Classes from an ElementAn application class can be deleted from an element in two ways, just as it could be added throughtwo routes: through Elements or through Element Profile.

If the element was created directly through Elements:

1. Click in the Configure tab > Properties > click on the element.

2. In the Application classes section > click Delete.

3. The Available Application Classes for Removal page appears.

1. Log in with super-administrator credentials and click on Portal > Performance Managers.

For a complete un-installation, it is recommended to remove all traces of the performance managerfrom the Portal. Delete the BPM Express for Dell Compellent PAR file from each RSM used by thesolution. To do so:

1. Stop the RSM service

2. Go to %RSM_HOME%\RSMxx\server\rsm\solutions

3. Delete the file: BPM-Express-for-Dell-Compellent-<version>.par

4. Restart the RSM service

Managing Baselines and KeyPerformance IndicatorsIn order to facilitate the detection of abnormalities on your monitored environment, BMCProactiveNet calculates baselines per parameter (metrics or attributes) based on values collectedover a specified period of time to determine a normal operating range. When the collected values forthese parameters are out of range, an alert is triggered.

Some parameters are identified by default as Key Performance Indicators and therefore automaticallyincluded in the base lining calculation.

Managing baselines

The baseline is the expected normal operating range for a metric or attribute of a monitor.

The baseline is calculated by collecting the values for a monitor’s attributes and metrics over aspecified time period and establishing a low baseline value (consisting of the 10th percentile of all thevalues for a given time period) and a high baseline value (consisting of the 90th percentile of all thevalues for a given time period), taking a weighted average of these values over time. A higher weightis given to the latest data being factored into the baseline average. The accuracy of the baselineimproves over time.

Requirements for baseline generation

For baselines to be generated for an attribute, that abnormality threshold means that the thresholdexists and is not suppressed. Additionally, if the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) mode is active, only those attributes that have anactive abnormality threshold and are also KPI attributes will have baselines generated for them.

Absolute thresholds (with "outside baseline") or signature thresholds do not satisfy these requirements.

Managing Key Performance Indicators

The KPI attribute of a parameter can be activated or deactivated manually through the BMCProactiveNet Administration Console. In this PM, some parameters or attributes have beendesignated as important indicators of performance (KPIs). We do not recommend that these defaultsettings are modified.

However, advanced users may activate or deactivate KPIs from the BMC ProactiveNet AdministrationConsole.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent monitors all of the performance metrics,usage statistics, as well as some physical aspect of your Dell Compellent Storage Center, such as filedisk space usage, storage controller utilization, I/Os on the disks/controllers/volumes, etc. Itcontinuously monitors the activity of each array and is also able to build reports on past utilizationstatistics.

This chapter explains how to use each monitoring tool i.e. a separate application class within the BPMExpress for Dell Compellent by Sentry Software solution.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent is a Performance Manager specifically designedfor BMC Portal; consequently, it uses the same common features and procedures of BMC Portal. Thisdocument assumes that the user knows how to use the Portal and therefore explains procedures onlyrelated to BPM Express for Dell Compellent and not on how to add Elements, Element Profiles etc.Please refer to the BMC Portal documentation for details on how to use the Portal.

Checking Disks Health

Even when a reliable backup solution is implemented in a SAN, a hard-drive failure can be a majorinconvenience. Indeed, a disk failure can result in loss of data, unavailability and performancedegradation. It is therefore highly recommended to monitor disks health, that is mainly monitoringdisk controllers and disks.

Monitoring Disk Controllers

A disk controller is a card inside a computer that connects one or several physical disk drives to thecomputer and write cache. To avoid this write from being lost if power is interrupted, the card mustbe configured with a battery. It is thus recommended to closely monitor this battery.

1. In the Portal console, click the Status parameter of the Battery application class to verify thedisk controller battery is able to support the controller in the event of a power failure.

2. You can also double-click the Status parameter of the Controller application class to make surethe controller is not degraded or has not failed.

Monitoring DisksPhysical disks must be monitored to avoid loss of data, unavailability and performance degradation.Contrary to other solutions, BPM Express for Dell Compellent monitors the actual physical disksbehind the controller and not only the disks as seen by the operating system. The application classused is Disk.

Checking Available Spare Disks

To avoid any loss of critical data, it is essential for a storage center to always maintain a pool ofspare disks that can replace the faulty disk when a disk failure occurs. A storage center without anyleft spare disk will not be able to keep the level of data safety and performance in case of a diskfailure.

The Spare Disk Count parameter of the Storage Center class reports the number of spare disksavailable for each storage center monitored with the solution.

Detecting OversubscriptionSituations (Thin Provisioning)We call an oversubscription situation when:

1. The storage pool is configured for thin provisioning (“thin storage pool”)

2. The storage pool is oversubscribed, i.e. the total disk space visible to the hosts (subscribers) isgreater than its actual capacity (this situation is normal for a thin pool since it is its very purpose)

3. The storage pool actual consumed capacity is nearing 75%

Such a situation is highly critical because the inability to allocate additional space to a LUN whenrequested by the subscriber host will lead to catastrophic data loss and corruption.

When the conditions described above are met, the solution sets the Oversubscription Situationparameter of the related disk to 1, automatically raising a warning. By default, the threshold for the Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter is set to 75%. This threshold can be configured in theinput properties of the solution.

Comparing the Processor Utilization of your Controllers

1. In the Portal, click the history chart icon of the Processor Utilization parameter of the firstcontroller for which you need to compare the activity. A graph is automatically displayed.

2. click the history chart icon of the Processor Utilization parameter of the second controller andcompare the values of both graph to evaluate the workload distribution.

Comparing Controllers Processor Utilization

For example, if the Processor Utilization on one controller goes above 80% while the othercontroller stays almost idle, it indicates that one on the controllers constitutes a bottleneck for thedisk array that could be alleviated by better sharing the load between the controllers.

Administrators should pay close attention to which logical drive is handled by which controller,depending on the activity of this logical drives to be able to reallocate controller to drive I/O activityso that neither controller is overloaded.

Diagnosing Electrical Issues

Understanding the basics of the electrical distribution system will help IT administrators diagnosedata center electrical issues. Power is delivered to a data center by the local utility company. Onceinside the building, the utility power goes to the Automatic Transfer Switch and to the uninterruptiblepower supply (UPS) units. These units clean the incoming utility system before passing it to powerdistribution units (PDUs) for conversion. Power will finally be distributed to electrical outlets andservers. During the distribution, power loss or instability can occur. It can be caused by voltage orAC/DC conversion, hence the importance to monitor voltage and power supplies.

Monitoring VoltageMonitoring voltage will help you verify the quality of your power supplies. In fact, if the power supplyis weak, the voltage level on the motherboard will not be steady, which could lead to random crashesor to errors at the processor or memory levels.

Monitoring Power supplies

After hard drives, the power supply is the device that is most likely to fail. The proper operation ofthis device highly depends on the quality of the data center electrical distribution. Indeed, voltagefluctuations are detrimental to power supplies: they can shorten their life span or impair them.

In the console, double-click the Status parameter of the Power Supply application class to verify thepower supply has not failed or is not degraded. Several power supply failures may reveal an issue onthe data center electrical distribution.

Identifying a Controller Overload

To visualize the activity of a controller in a Dell Compellent Storage Center, use the ProcessorUtilization parameter of the Controller class. A warning is issued when the processor utilization goesabove 80 %, which means that the controllers cannot keep up with the load on the storage center. Itis then important to identify what is overloading the controllers.

The Response Time parameter of the Controller class represents the average time it took thecontroller to process the read and write requests of the hosts. The higher the Response Time goes,the slower I/Os the servers will get. By default, the solution triggers a warning when the controllertakes more than 30 milliseconds on average to complete the I/O requests and an alarm when theresponse time reaches 100 milliseconds.

Enabling the Debug Mode

By default, BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent sends only the most criticalinformation, warning and error messages to the Application Collection Status parameter. Mostoften, this information is accurate enough to ensure that BPM Express for Dell Compellent isfunctioning properly. If you encounter an issue and wish to report it to customer support, you will beasked to enable the Debug Mode and provide the debug output to the support team.

1. In the Configure tab >, under Tasks, click Elements

2. Select the Element whose debug output you require and click Edit.

3. Scroll down to Application Classes > click the Application class for which you want toenable the debug mode > click Edit.

4. Select Yes from the drop-down Debug Mode list > Save. By default, BPM Express for DellCompellent sends its debug output to: %RSM_HOME%\RSM(xx)\server\rsm\log\sen*_debug.log".

5. Wait for 15 minutes and then disable the debug mode by selecting No.

6. Send the debug file to the support team.

Pay attention to the file size -the debug output of BPM Express for Dell Compellent could be very large if enabled forseveral days.

Reporting a Disk SpaceConsumptionMaking sure that a storage center has enough remaining disk space available is critical for severalreasons:

SAN administrators want to make sure to be able to provision disk space for new servers whenrequested, as quickly as possible.

The storage center itself may need additional disk space for specific features to work properly,like automatic snapshots, mirroring, etc.

If thin provisioning is used, the remaining disk space becomes dramatically critical since theinability to allocate additional space to a volume when requested by the subscriber host will leadto catastrophic data loss and corruption.

The disk space used is permanently monitored for each storage pool. The Subscribed Capacityparameter of the Disk Folder class represents the amount of disk space that has been madeavailable to the subscriber hosts, or in other words, the amount of disk space that is seen by theservers connected to the storage center.

The Consumed Capacity parameter of the Disk Folder class represents the actual space usage in

the disk folders. For thin pools (when thin provisioning is enabled on the storage center), this value isnormally lower than the Subscribed Capacity, as it is the main purpose of thin provisioning. Fortraditional disk folders, the Consumed Capacity parameters has the same value as theSubscribed Capacity parameter, as the entirety of the subscribed disk space is fully allocated inthe disk folders.

The Consumed Capacity Percentage parameter is the most critical one as a storage pool usagenearing 100% means that SAN administrators will not be able to create new volume in the storagecenter. By default, no alarm or warning threshold is set on this parameter as the fullness of a storagepool may be a normal situation. However, you can set alert thresholds on this parameter as it fitsyour needs.

Viewing the Overall Activity of aStorage CenterIn order to visualize the activity of a storage Center, use the Front End Read Byte Rate/BackEnd Read Byte Rate and Front End Write Byte Rate/Back End Write Byte Rate of theStorage Center class. These parameters represent the overall traffic in megabytes per second foreach monitored storage center, or more precisely, each Dell Compellent storage center that isexposed through the Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager (see the Dell Compellent EnterpriseManager section of the Installation Guide for more information about the Dell Compellent EnterpriseManager).

Managing Cooling issues

Even though data centers and servers are cooled with air conditioning and fans, computing systemsmay be overheated. Because overheating will lead to a general instability, BMC Performance ManagerExpress for Dell Compellent monitors the fans present and all the temperature sensors. Automaticthresholds are set according to the manufacturers' recommendation and the location of temperaturesensor. There is no need to customize the alert thresholds for temperature sensors and fan speeds.

The temperature thresholds set by BPM Express for Dell Compellent should not be customized ormodified.

The temperature of the interior of the case of a storage center is controlled with fans. To preventambient temperature to get too high, ensure the fan is properly working:

1. First verify the fan is available and spinning by respectively checking the Present and Statusparameters of the Fan application class.

2. Then verify the:

Speed parameter to make sure its speed is not too fast or too low.

Speed Percentage parameter to make sure the fan has not reached its maximum speed.

Cooling might not be sufficient if the fan speed is too low or if maximum speed is reached.

A fan which is not spinning anymore or is turning too slowly should be replaced immediately.

Setting thresholds

Whenever relevant, BMC Performance Manager Express for Dell Compellent automatically setsthresholds for parameters. If you prefer a more fault-tolerant monitoring, you can modify thethresholds of each parameter through the Configure tab > Edit Thresholds.

It is strongly recommended to wait for all the storage objects to be discovered before setting threshold values to avoidhaving to enter thresholds for each occurrence of the application class.

To modify the parameter thresholds of several storage objects of an element:

1. In the Configure tab, click on the Storage (<platform>) or the instance icon > Edit
