Induction treatment for mass

production requires short cycle

times and high reliability. High

reproducibility and minimum

down time are features of these

machines. The complete treat-

ment should be finished in one

traverse. These installations can

be a part of a production line or

single station machines.

Workpiece speed can reach up

to 15 m/min. using continuous

horizontal hardening machines,

if the length tolerance and

hardening requirement allow

this. BMDWK Series machines

offer high economy and

efficiency when integrated into

the production line. There are

BMDWK Series machines for

workpiece lengths of 300, 500,and 850 mm and workpiece

diameters of 5-30 mm.

A standard machine has a con-

veyor belt with jam control at

the machine inlet to start and

stop the machine automatically

if no workpiece is on the line.

The outlet is via V-guide. Rejects

are separated automatically

(relevant data acquisition

assumed). Hand wheels allow

an easy changeover to another

workpiece group. Conveyor belt

speed is automatically adjusted

by the NC program.

Workpieces are rotated by

hardened rollers with water

cooled, stainless steel bearings.

The hardening and quench area

is completely enclosed in paint-

ed steel with front mountedswinging doors.

Horizontal hardening machines

are involved in centerless pro-

cess. These machines are ideal

for plain shafts requiring high

production rates and precisely

tolerated hardening zones.

BMDW Series standard machines

are available for workpiece

lengths of 300, 500, 1000 and

1500 mm and workpiece dia-

meters of 5-50 mm. In special

cases workpieces up to 8 meters

can be accommodated. A load-

ing magazine comes as a part of

the basic equipment. Unloading

is via V-guide.

A CNC controlled servomotor is

used for the horizontal feed.

The workpiece rotation is

generated by hardened rollers

with water cooled, stainless

steel bearings. The hardening

and quench area is completely

enclosed in painted steel with

mounted swinging doors in the

front. The central lubrication

system is manually operated.

Double and triple track models to

shorten cycle time are available.

Edge hardening with preheating

and groove hardening are

available with the option of

horizontal inductor movement -

pneumatically to end position or

as CNC axis.

Other options include:

• Loading magazine forlarger quantity

• Rejecting chute

• Conveyor belts for loading

and unloading

• Integrated or separate

tempering station

• Control and documentation of

process parameters such as

energy input, quench medium

flow rate, and quench medium

temperature

• Siemens CNC control

The EFD 840 D Control Concept

Increasing demands for equip-

ment efficiency and technical

capability mean that CNC con-

trols have to be incorporated

into induction hardening

equipment whilst coping with

the demands of the PLC. The

systems have to handle the

rapid processing of digital and

analogue data. With this inmind the EFD concept, which

is based around the Siemens

SINUMERIK 840 D family,

can be delivered in 3 standard-

versions.

The series 840 D-B (basic

range), 840 D-M (medium

range) and 840 D-T (top range)

will be pre-selected depending

on the individual requirements

beginning from 1 axis-operation

up to multi axes-applications.

The control unit is mounted in

it’s own cabinet attached to the

machine body. The system

operation field is located in

close vicinity to the operator.

The control concept on the dis-

play for supervision of quality,

operating and monitoring is the

same for all three options.Absolute encoders replace the

time consuming requirement of

referencing the system on "Start

Up”.

Machine Control

The standard series machine

has a specially developed high

speed NC (HNC) control with

extremely short reaction time.

The terminal is separatelylocated within easy reach of the

user and has clearly marked

symbols on the function keys

to allow maximum ease and

comfort of operation. The precise

sensor to detect the workpiece

edge can be easily mounted

either in front of or behind the

inductor. This enables for exam-

ple a safe and reproducible heat

treatment of completely plain

shafts without journals even

with close hardness tolerances

at high line speeds.

Technical Specification HNC:

• LED-display for 2x40 charac-

ters

• NC-reaction time 1/1000 s

• NC-memory for 99 part pro-

grams

• Max. 2 characters available for

program number, max. 16

characters for part description

• NC and machine function keys

• Choice of different languages

Other options include:

• Loading magazine for larger

workpiece quantity

• Outlet Conveyor belt for

unloading

• Integrated or separate

tempering station

• Control and documentation of

process parameters such as

energy input, quench medium

flow rate, and quench mediumtemperature

• PC-software for NC-part pro-

gram management
