The most important element of economic theory has been ignored for more than two centuries, and its

rediscovery has started a revolution the likes of which occurred just three times in eight centuries. That's thethesis of Redeeming Economics: Rediscovering the Missing Element (ISI Books, 2010), by John D. Mueller, director of EPPC's Economics and Ethics Program and president of LBMC LLC. Since the great Adam Smithtried to reduce human behavior to mere exchanges, modern economists have lost sight of how our fundamentalmotivations of love (or hate) are expressed: as gifts (or their opposite, crimes). Mueller shows how reapplyingthe economic thought of Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas makes economics whole again. Contrarian andcompelling, Redeeming Economics covers everything from the cause of the Great Depression and GreatRecession, to the economics of parenthood, to flaws in the mega-bestseller Freakonomics , to the author'silluminating exchange with the controversial philosopher Peter Singer, to the formula for presidential economicsuccess.

    Praise for Redeeming Economics:

    About Prof. Senut's conference:

African great apes and humans are closely related and they all belong to the zoological super-family, Hominoidea . Humans thus share a large part of their history with apes, which is why it is so important to studyfossil apes to understand the earliest hominids and the emergence of our own family. The evolution of hominoids is linked with geographic distribution, changes in the environment (and thus the climate) and time;and only the consideration of all these aspects can help us to understand what made us hominids.

Several years ago, on the threshold of an unusual sickness, Paula Crawford began painting walls of spherical forms. When she was

finally diagnosed with Hepatitis C, her doctor showed her an image of the cells causing

the disease. They were clustered spheres-almost identical to what shehad been painting. Whether this was a case of tuned inner eye or

pure chance we will never know.

Crawford's call to paint these forms has remained after a yearlong treatment and final cure. In the beginning, the forms in the paintings

appeared as cellular walls, dense and impenetrable. Still, they seemed beautiful like river rocks under rushing water, or an infinite array

of candy coated gumballs. Slowly, alongside her recovery, the wall of cells broke down, folding away towards a horizon. As if laying out

the path to recovery, the cells became land or seascape, floors rather than walls, like stones paths -easily passable, creating distance

    rather than confinement.

Lurking at the center of our galaxy is its

most massive object a supermassive blackhole. More than a quarter century ago, astronomers first imagined that galaxiessuch as our own Milky Way might harbormassive, though possibly dormant, centralblack holes. Definitive proof lay in assessingthe distribution and motion of matter at thecenter of the galaxy. Based on 15 years of high- resolution imaging, Dr. Ghezs teamhas moved the case for a supermassiveblack hole at the galactic center from apossibility to a certainty. Although the starsorbiting close to the black hole appear to bemassive and young, their origins aredifficult to explain. Understanding them

    Addison/Ripley Fine Art

    1670 Wisconsin Avenue NW

Addison/Ripley Fine Art is especially pleased to present this exhibit of recent unique silkscreens byLou Stovall, "No Editions: Painterly Prints", works that display the full range of the artist'sextraordinary imagination and technical accomplishment. These works show Stovall as a true heir tothe groundbreaking work of the Washington Color School and a ceaseless innovator in his ownright. As indicated in the title, these are one of a kind prints, skillfully layered, dazzlingly rich in color.

Lou Stovall was born in Athens, Georgia in 1937 and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Hestudied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Howard University (B.F.A.). Since 1962, he haslived and worked in Washington, DC. His drawings and silkscreen prints have brought him grantsfrom the National Endowment for the Arts and the Stern Family Fund.

Under his direction, Workshop, Inc. has grown from a small but active studio primarily concernedwith community posters into a professional printmaking facility. Stovall's craft is that of a masterprintmaker but his passion is drawing. His own prints and drawings are part of numerous public and

private collections throughout the world. Through Workshop, Inc., founded in 1968, he has made aunique effort to build a community of artists in Washington, DC and to encourage, by his ownexample, service in the community.

Along with his own work, recognition as a master printmaker has gained him commissions to printworks of such noted artists as Josef Albers, Peter Blume, Alexander Calder, Elizabeth Catlett, GeneDavis, David Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Robert Mangold, MathieuMategot, A. Brockie Stevenson and James L. Wells.

Among his special commissions he designed the Independence Day invitation for the White Housein 1982 at the request of Mrs. Ronald Reagan. In 1986, at the request of Mayor Marion Barry, hemade the print American Beauty Rose for the Washington, DC Area Host Committee 1988Democratic National Convention. In 1996 he designed and made the print Breathing Hope to honorHoward University's incoming president H. Patrick Swygert.

    Human Rights Day Celebration

    Saturday, December 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

    Busboys and Poets

    14th and V Streets NW

SHINE A LIGHT ON HUMAN RIGHTSCelebrate Human Rights Day by taking action and gathering for a night of letter-writing while enjoying food, drink and live music at Busboys and Poets on 14th and V accessible by the U St Metro. The night will shine light onviolence against women of Congo, with guest speakers Sadia Hameed and Irene Safi Turner.

SHINE A LIGHT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN...The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been called the rape capital of the world. Every year, thousandsof rapes are reported. Many more rapes go unreported, because of the personal risk and shame associated withbeing attacked. A central problem is the use of rape as a weapon of war by all sides in the Congo wars. However, the frequency of rape as a weapon, and the almost total impunity for perpetrators of these atrocious crimes, haveled to an increase in the incidence of rape in all corners of the country.

The perpetual cycle of violence against women in the DRC must end.
