Interview IOANNIS

Ioannis joined our team on 1 December 2014. He became part of the Katarina’s team upon his arrival. After very long period he is the first foreigner in our team, therefore we decided to introduce his person to our readers.

Ioannis, can you tell us whe-re you come from, where were you born?I come from Thessaloniki, Gree-ce where I was born as well. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece.

Can you descri-be it a bit for us? What is similar to Bratislava, what is diffe-rent?.With pleasure! I liked it there as most of my childhood memo-ries are from there. So I guess everyone has a good thing to tell about their cities or villages, for

not so objective reasons! Howe-ver, Thessaloniki objectively is a nice city.It is larger than Bratislava I be-lieve as it has around 900,000 in-habitants! It’s much more densely populated than Bratislava which

means not much free space...Similar to Bra-tislava is the fact that it has an in-teresting lands-cape with both the elements of water and moun-

tains.

Is there anything spectacular? Any famous beach, for instan-

ce? People from Slovakia often spend their holiday in Greece, so maybe some of your collea-gues could recognize it.Yes it is built around a gulf, the element of water is very present at the city.I guess something spectacular is that the highest mountain of Greece is visible in clear winter days from the beach of Thessalo-niki which is an impressive view! It is of course Mt Olympus with 2917 meters. It is full of snow from November to May.Another common thing with Bratislava is the problem with the cars and the fact that public transportation is not that good. Only traffic in Thessaloniki is way worse because of much more cars! Also both cities have a

ghost metro that has never been completed.

And what made you to leave that scenery and wind up in not that nice central Europe? The crisis of course and the fact that unemployment skyrocke-ted. But before that I lived in the Netherlands and Germany for almost four years (studies and work).

Can you perhaps tell us more details?I left Greece to study abroad (Master’s) and look for a job. It was the beginning of the crisis when Greece was not in such deep trouble and had a bad pictu-re outside. Now I think the whole Europe is against us and perhaps, not wrongfully. However, my de-cision to study abroad was mostly because I had never live abroad at that time and I really wanted to experience the international life. Holland was the perfect choice because studies are not expensi-ve, and the education level is very high. And of course who can deny that Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in Europe. Finding a job there was harder than I thought, but doing a good internship was fairly easy as I was a student.

Harder? How so? I think the unemployment rate in the Netherlands is among the lowest in Europe.Well, yes unemployment is lower in Holland, but number sometimes lie...For example I saw there was a strong turn to Dutch natives af-ter the second year of my stay and when the crisis had already influen-ced big part of Europe. I mean like employers strongly preferred locals which was not the case before. So I moved to Berlin (another “wow” for some). But I only stayed for 3 months as I found a job in Bratis-lava. Berlin was not as “wow” as I expected but still a nice place to live.

According to the

Greek census 2011,

the municipality of

Thessaloniki today

has a population of

325,182, while the

Thessaloniki Urban

Area (the contiguous

built up area

forming the “City

of Thessaloniki”)

has a population of

788,952.

What exactly did you study in Amsterdam? In what field you are an expert?Actually I studied in Rotterdam, and then I did an internship in Amsterdam. It was at Philips, in Consumer Lifestyle, in male grooming department. It was a very exciting experience by the way! My studies were in mar-keting and business administra-tion, so you could say I’m a mar-keting guy.

Male grooming? What is that? You know these shavers and trimmers that Philips sells? For facial hair, or just...hair. I think

everyone is familiar with their products.

Let’s move now closer to pre-sent times. Where do you live in Bratislava?I live in legendary Mileticova street. Close to Trhovisko.

Oh, so you have it very close to work then.Yes close to work but a bit far from the city center, I think.

Believe me, you could be lo-cated in much farther areas. How did you find out about our open position when you li-

ved in Berlin?A friend of mine who was al-ready working here in IBM infor-med me and he offered to refer me. I accepted of course as I was unemployed at that moment, and I found it a good opportunity.

What were your feelings from the interview? Who inter-viewed you?My interview was with Katari-na and Jana. As usual I was a bit stressed before and during the interview, and the fact that I was 5 minutes late because I couldn’t find the right building didn’t help a lot. But after the interview I had a positive feeling about the outcome.

You were here personally for the interview?

Yes I was. Guess I was the only one…

When were you told that you’d been hired? The offer was made 2-3 days after the interview. I was surprised that it was so fast!

What were your first impres-sions from the country, the town and from your first work day in our team?My first impressions from Bratis-lava were quite mixed. It looked like a big village with skyscrapers, something I had not seen before. I liked the fact that it has a lot of open spaces and interesting old and new architecture. What I ob-served is that the street plan is a bit chaotic, with many dead ends and confusing streets. However,

as I come from Greece I’m used to chaotic situations. I didn’t get to experience much of Slovakia yet unfortunately so I will just stick with what I know from Bra-tislava. My first work day in our team was great because I realized that the office culture is quite re-laxed and informal. In the first weekly dept. meeting I realized I should calm down a bit and be more open.

Who was your buddy? Were you satisfied with his/her ser-vice?I guess I was lucky because I had two buddies. At first it was David and then Darius. It seems there was a confusion in the beginning about my role. They were both

helpful and responsive when I ne-eded them so yes I was satisfied.

What is your current work as-signment?My current work assignment is that of the Resource Manage-ment Analyst, which is like a bu-siness information analyst but specialized in human resources data (e.g. workload, productivity, headcounts, etc.).

How often do you travel back home to Greece? Not often, only around 3 times per year.

What Slovak food do you like most and which you regret you even tried?

(Laugh). I think it’s always a mat-ter of eating the right stuff in the right place. So if we assume that the food is well prepared then I would say I liked everything I tried so far. Halusky and the cabbage soup (kapustova) with the sausage are great! I had a bad experience with cevabcici at a restaurant near work, which were pink and al-most uncooked, which is of cour-se a case of bad cooking.

On the other hand, what would you recommend from traditio-nal Greek cuisine? As above first of all know where you are eating and ask for advice or check reviews. Then I would recommend to try something di-fferent than the usual stuff (you

know mussaka, tzatziki etc). Sea food is great as there is fresh fish everywhere. And for the meat lovers I would recommend beef or rabbit stifado (stew in english) with hilopites (egg pasta).

Have you tried Greek tavern on Kosicka street, here in Bratis-lava?Not yet, because I saw some me-diocre reviews online. Also the place seems a bit empty whenever I pass although it seems quite nice (although kitsch as typical Greek taverns abroad). I will give it a try at some point just for patriotic re-asons!

OK, let’s finish our interview with the hot topic of these

days. What do you think about Greece future, will you keep Euro?I think Greece will stay in the Euro in the near future, but I don’t ex-pect the Euro to last for many years to come. Currently Germany and Greece are not benefited by a “Grexit” for different reasons, but I am not sure about the rest of Eu-rope.

Did you vote for Syriza in the last elections? Feel free not to answer!) What do you think about new Greek government.I didn’t vote as the Greek regula-tion does not provide for voting anywhere outside Greece, which is a shame as there are millions of Greeks living abroad. I would

have voted for a smaller party because I consider all the popu-lar ones, populist and corrupt. I’m not sure that a communist government can bring deve-lopment and investments to Greece, but on the other hand neither a supposedly liberal could so far. If they manage to fight tax evasion and reduce public servant’s benefits which are the two main problems of the economy, the situation will rapidly improve. However, no government so far could face these issuesI

Washoe si počas svo-jho života osvojila asi 350 znakov a aktí-vne ich využívala. Bežne tvorila trojslo-vné vety a (tajnička - 29).

Based on your astral sign and personal characteristics I found out following about you – these characteristics define you and you should take them into considera-tion throughout the year 2015:

• You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.

• You have a tendency to be cri-tical of yourself.

• You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not tur-ned to your advantage.• While you have some persona-lity weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them.• Disciplined and self-controlled

outside, you tend to be worriso-me and insecure inside.

• At times you have serious dou-bts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing.

• You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations.

• You pride yourself as an inde-pendent thinker and do not ac-cept others’ statements without satisfactory proof.

• You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others.

• At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved.

• Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic.

• Security is one of your major goals in life.

Does it look accurate? Well it should… Those statements are vague and general enough to des-cribe most of the people. Mo-reover, our internal biases tend to focus on the statements which

Writter_ Lucas Iacono

“Horoscope have as good year (this and all the following) as possible. Enjoy it at

maximum !”

are true and ignore those which are not. Statements above were a part of the experiment performed in 1948 by the psychologist Bertram R. Forer.Students in his class were told, that each one of them will recei-ve a personalized profile and they should mark its preciseness from 0 (poor) to 5 (excellent). In reality, of course, students were given the same profile. However the average mark was – 4.26.The test has been performed many times, using some varia-tions, but always bringing similar results. The test itself, similarly to any horoscope published in newspa-per or “personally prepared” by an astrologist, combines multiple biases and imperfections of hu-man mind:

• Confirmation bias - The tendency to search for, interpret, focus on and remember informa-tion in a way that confirms one’s preconceptions. This means in practice, that you already have a view and opinion about your-self. You just subconsciously pick from the statements only those, which confirm your mental ima-ge and ignore those which do not.

• Respect to authorities – you would look differently on the statements above, if they are pre-sented to you by a man in whi-te coat, introducing himself as a prominent psychologist and ex-plaining to you, that those results are a part of the long research on your personality, and sup-ported by long hours of talking with your colleagues, family and friends. Similarly, many people might differentiate when they read the same horoscope in a hu-moristic magazine and when it is

handled to them by a “respected astrologist” recommended by their friends.

• Belief bias – if you are simply sure, that horoscopes must be true – you either “feel it inside” or find the space and world around so complicated, that nobody can be sure enough of what is going on and therefore anybody can be right.

• Cold reading – not appli-cable for this written example, but

highly applicable in its verbal va-riants or at various seers, fortune tellers or astrologist. The person performing cold reading starts with very general statements and steers the communication based on the feedback (verbal or non-verbal – mimic, gestures, face ex-pressions, etc.) provided by the customer. So, horoscope aside, have as good year (this and all the following) as possible. Enjoy it at work and at private sphere to the maximum! r

The first (and hopefully not the last) victim of our fash-ion police is Lukas. Big thank you for your bravery!

He is presenting us his favourite work outfit. He is wearing a blue shirt, blue T-shirt and blue jeans. It is certain-ly not a coincidence that blue is also the symbol of IBM. Lukas is expressing his affection and dedication toward his employer by wearing proudly the corpo-rate colours. The bonus is that the outfit matches the blue flow-

They just make you want to say NO. This

The free-standing three-storey Villa Tugendhat is situated at the exclusive plot of land which provides a marvelous view of the historical panorama of Brno and belonged to family Tugendhat, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as the world’s first steel-framed house. The utility and technical equipment of the house were completely innovative for the time. It cost 5 million Kč at a time when a very luxury villa could be built for about 320,000 Kč . It was completed in December 1930

Grete Tugendhat“From the first moment we truly loved the house. When we were on our own, we would sit in the library while with friends we would prefer to spend evenings in front of the glass wall lit up from the rear with its subtle and gentle light. We enjoyed the house even more during the spring and summer. When the children were small, we were constantly with them on the terrace. They had a tub there for splashing as well as a polygon crate with sand in the shade. They would ride along the entire terrace in their skates and children’s cars.”

The first storey - something like the backstage of a thea-tre - contains the utility facilities as room for fruit and vegetables, wash room, drying room, ironing room as well as the “moth room” for storage of fur coats. In order not to deform the large space with heating structures, an air system was created which could be used as air condi-tioning in the summer months. The air passed through a shower of water, over stones taken from the sea, then through filters of cedar oil and cedar shavings, in order

Writter_ Lucas Iacono

to make it cool and fragrant. Despi-te the fact there was still very little experience with this kind of equip-ment in private homes at the time, this air system worked perfectly. The second storey - consists of the main living and social areas with the conservatory and the terrace, kitchen. The individual zones are divided up by the wall from onyx, thin enough that, when hit by the low winter sun, it glows on its in-ward side and the half-circular wall originally from Macassar ebony wood. The most prominent feature of the ‘flowing’ living area was the grand seating arrangement in front of the onyx wall. The interior could be connected up with the garden through the two large windows ope-rated via electric motors all the the way to the floor. The third storey - the main entran-ce from the street with a passage

to the terrace, the entrance hall, the rooms for the parents, children and the nanny with appropriate facilities. The chauffeur’s flat with the garages and the terrace are accessible sepa-rately. …. and Tugendhats lived here up until May 1938. They were forced to emigrate in connection with the threat of World War II (both came from Jewish German families) and left for Switzerland, later Venezuela. At the beginning of October 1939 the Villa was taken over by the Ges-tapo and from January 1942 became the property of Nazi Germany, fo-llowed by architecture-loving Soviet

soldiers, who created a stable for their horses in the social rooms and furniture used as wood fuel. After the war, it became a ballet stu-dio, a rehabilitation centre for chil-dren with spinal defects and a guest house for the government. In 1992 political leaders Vaclav Klaus and Vladimir Meciar met in this three-dimensional artwork to sign the division of the country, shouldn’t they choose a different place? In these days the Villa belongs to Mesto Brno and is recorded on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
