Introduction to Business Objects

An integrated query, reporting and analysissolution.

Allows you to access and analyze the data inyour corporate databases directly from your

desktop. Provides a µbusiness-intelligent, semanticlayer¶(Universe) that isolates business usersfrom technicalities of the database.

Stores the following - Users created by the Supervisor. Universes created by the Designer. Documents sent by users so that other users

can retrieve and view them. Enforces security - Users¶ access rights to viewthe different components like universes,

Full Client Deployment ( 2 ± Tier) Greater flexibility for designing reports.

 Potentially faster response.

Useful for a small group of POWER USERS.

Thin Client Deployment (3 ± Tier)

Client / middleware installation not needed.

 Useful for large deployments.

Why Business Objects ????

The advantages are: Little or no dependence on Information Systemsdepartment to produce reports.

Steep learning curve - faster learning. Extremely user-friendly interface. The data is secure and the system is easy to

maintain.

A universe is a semantic layer that maps the datastructure found in databases (tables, columns, etc)to business terms.

A universe can represent any specific businessarea, process, or department. For example, auniverse can relate to a department in a company

such as marketing or accounting.

Class

A class is a logical grouping of objects within auniverse. In general, the name of a class reflects a

business concept that conveys the category or typeof objects.

A class can be further divided into subclasses.A designer defines hierarchies of classes andsubclasses into a model that best reflects the

business concepts of the company.

Exporting data from BO

Data can be exported from B O reports in thefollowing formats -

Text

Can be opened in different applications and on

platforms other than Windows. Spreadsheet format ( M icrosoft Excel)

Each value from the exported data, appears in a

different cell.

RD BM S format (including .dbf format for d B ASE) This creates a relational table in the database

The Scheduler passes due BusinessObjects documentssuch as Task1 to the BOManager, which launches oneinstance of BusinessObjects on the server per document.Similarly, WebIntelligence documents such as Task 2 arepassed to the WIGenerator process, which launches one

instance of WIQT to process each.

On the server, BusinessObjects or WIQT performs theactions the user requested on the document. This can meanquerying the corporate database to refresh the document.

Add Sales tax as a computed value to this column. (Sales tax =8% of revenue)

For the same report, create a variable called Sales Tax and add acolumn to the right of revenue.

Create an alerter to shade the cell in GREY with RED fontwherever the sales tax > 15,000
