Nuclear Submarine Officer (LT, USN) Jun 84 – Dec 89 United States Navy Student, Naval Nuclear Power School: Assigned to extensive training program covering theoretical and operational characteristics of a Naval Nuclear Powerplant. Student, Naval Nuclear Prototype: trained to operate and supervise operations of a naval nuclear power plant. Completed one month of intensive classroom training, followed by five months of hands-on training. Conducted complex evolutions and casualty drills at every watch station (officer and enlisted) at the S7G Naval Nuclear Prototype (a land-based operational reactor). Certified as Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) for the S7G plant after successful completion of a detailed written and oral examination, followed by a comprehensive plant watchstanding evaluation. Student, Naval Submarine School: completed course of instruction in the concepts of submarine operations. Assigned to USS Flying Fish (SSN 673), and USS Sturgeon (SSN 637) fast attack nuclear submarines. Led group of five Engineering Laboratory Technicians.

• Communications Officer, directing operation of ship's radio and cryptological systems, including FLTSATCOM, VERDIN, ORESTES, LINK 11, and SSIXS. Managed ship’s communication plan. Drafted and released classified situation reports, authored and/or edited all other outgoing message traffic. Led and directed five enlisted radiomen.

• Chief Engineer, directly responsible for the safe and effective operation of the ship's nuclear power plant, steam plant, electrical plant, and associated auxiliary systems. Department Head, supervising Machinery, Electrical, Reactor Controls, Chemistry and Radiological Controls, and Damage Controls divisions. Lead quality control officer. Responsible for proper operation and maintenance of ship’s atmospheric controls machinery and enforcement of atmospheric controls program. Trained ship’s nuclear personnel using classroom seminars and watch-station drills. Enforced proper control room resource management procedures. Planned and directed a major nuclear upkeep repair period. Directed five junior officers and 50 enlisted technicians.
