FREE Open Gaming & Learn to Play Events Saturdays in October! For centuries, Halloween has been a holiday lled with magic, fortune telling and mystery. To commemorate that, we’ve chosen games suited to those themes for our October Learn to Play events.

As fortune would have it, two super fun games of potion brewing just came back in to stock. ese two games and another from the wizarding world of Harry Potter will provide the magical element of our October Learn to Play events.

For fortune telling, we thought you might prefer to choose your own, so we’ve selected a choose-your-own-adventure game, a harrowing escape from an abandoned cabin and a light trick-or-treat roll-and-write game.

Finally, as the veil between this world and the next thins, we’ll delve into mystery. A ghost will ask you to

investigate its murder and a strange phone call will lead you to a macabre Lovecraftian mystery of unspeakable horror. Magic, fortune telling and mystery - we’ll teach you how to play!

Of course, if you’d rather hunt zombies, play a super hero or try something more tame, you can always join us for Free Open Gaming. You’ll have access to our extensive game library of over 400 games and our three game rooms that can comfortably accommodate 30 gamers.

Saturday, October 26 Mystery: Mysterium & Mansions of Madness

Mysterium is a beautiful, pure cooperative game of communi-cation. Murder most foul has been committed at Warwick Manor and a group of eminent psychics have been called together for a seance to investi-gate. at’s you.

In Mysterium, one player plays the ghost of the

murder victim and the others psychic investigators who must discover who committed the murder, where and with what weapon. e ghost may only communicate with the psychics through dream-like images depicted on gorgeously illustrated cards. e psychics have just 7 hours (rounds) to interpret the visions sent by the ghost: exposing the murderer, uncovering the location and determining the murder weapon. Intuition, cooperation and inspired guesswork will be key to your success.

Two to seven players, ages 10 and up, can play Mysterium in about 45 minutes.

Join us at Here Be Books & Games and we’ll teach you how to play.

expansion for $10 and San Juan and Patronize together for $12.

Saturday, October 19 Fortune Telling: Above and Below, Exit: The Game - The Abandoned Cabin & Welcome To... Halloween

Above and Below is a light worker placement game of town-building and storytelling.

When your village was sacked by barbarians, you searched far and wide for the perfect place to build a new home. en you found it! Not only was it perfect, but nearby you discovered a vast network of underground caverns lled with treasure, rare resources, and untold adventure. Unwilling to limit your new life to the surface, you immediately start organizing expeditions to explore the riches below while continuing to expand your village above.

In Above and Below, you’ll send your villagers to perform jobs like exploring the caverns below, harvesting resources, building houses and training new workers. Each villager has unique skills and abilities, and you must decide how best to use them. Will you send Cyndi on the expedition below? at’s where the storytelling is! Or will you keep her above to teach important skills to one of the young-sters, so you can send a bigger party later?

When you send a group of villagers to explore the caverns below, one of your friends reads what happens to you from a book of paragraphs. You'll be given a choice of how to react. A lot will depend on who you sent on the expedition, and how kindly or not so kindly you treat with strangers. Your fortune is yours to tell in Above and Below.

3. Choose Your Own Adventure GamesChoose Your Own Adventure games are just that: narrative adventure games in which you choose, what doors to open, which fork in the road to take, how to react to circumstances and more. Each game features cooperative play and a unique adventure with a mystery to uncover. Two titles are available so far.

In Choose Your Own Adventure: House of Danger, you and your friends are in for a perilous and laughter-lled adventure. You’ll make risky choices, collect bizarre clues, and face mortal challenges as you explore the weird and strange house.

In Choose Your Own Adventure: War with the Evil Power Master, you and your plucky young team of heroes must endeavor to save the galaxy from the evil power master bent on global destruction.

You can break up play into multiple sessions - by chapter - or play one long

session if you so choose. When I played e House of Danger with ve other people, we were so caught up in the story we couldn’t stop and played the whole game through in one session.

You can play both Choose Your Own Adventure titles multiple times to uncover more secrets and dierent endings. No two play-throughs are quite the same.

Choose Your Own Adventure Games can be played solo or with as many people as you wish. e titles above are recommended for ages 10 and up. Playtime is about 60 minutes for one chapter; each game has multiple chapters. In stock now at Here Be Books & Games.

4. ObscurioObscurio is an image-based communication and secret-role family game. You’ve got to be careful when sharing ideas with your team, because there may a traitor in your ranks!

ematically, you are trapped in the Sorcerer’s libraty and he’s

out to get you! Find your way among the

Kelsey Roach (right) looked pretty happy with his two acquisitions: Battlelore ($30) and e World of Warcarft Adventure Game ($15).

Jason Bush didn’t have to ght as hard as I expected he would for a set of Red Dragon Inn Promo cards; several other big fans of the game weren’t able to attend this time. I picked up a playmat featuring a map of Middle-Earth for my game table at the store. I gure it will make rolling dice a lot quieter. It came with two other playmats - one was for Elysium which I passed on to Ian - and Lord of the Rings: e Card Game - Attack on Dol Guldur which I aim to pass on to someone else, too.

Nick Kraftor (right) seemed pretty happy with the three stacks of games he bought. His bids won him the classics Puerto Rico ($19) and Dominion ($10), as well as the popular Kingsburg ($15) and Legendary: A Marvel Deckbuilding Game ($15) among others.

While everyone scored really good deals at the game auction, and many took home one or more stacks of games, Liz Yanzer certainly took home the most games. Check out her haul below. If you look closely, you can see the top of a Bohnanza game behind the bottom right corner of the Ramen Fury game she’s holding. Bohnanza is on top of a fourth pile of games!

We all took a break about two-thirds of the way through

to recharge with complimen-tary brownies and chocolate chip cookies. e break was refreshing. When we resumed, the rest of the auction ew by. en I retired to my oce with Jennifer and Diane to do the paperwork so Tim could start checking people out.

Many thanks to everyone who participated whether as a buyer, seller or both! We really appreciate the sellers who submitted their games early, giving Tim more time to research them. We also appreciate the buyers who RSVPed so we could better gauge how many to expect.

A special thanks goes out to Ian, Diane, Jennifer and Bailey for all their hard work and assistance. Tim and I could not do the auction without them. Ian arrived hours early to help Tim organize the lots in auction order, which made the process go even smoother than before. I think we’re getting this down to a science.

Look for the next game auction sometime in January. You can sign up to receive text messages on our website or in the store, join us on Meetup, and/or follow us on Face-book to receive notication of the next game auction and other events at Here Be Books & Games.

5 Games of Mystery and the Macabre for HalloweenHalloween has always been a holiday of mystery and the macabre. So to introduce a little fun and creepiness to your Halloween gaming, I’ve put together a list of ve games of mystery with some that border on the macabre.

1. Hako OnnaI’m gonna start with the one that I think sounds the creepiest: Hako Onna.

e scary men arrived. My father, in a panic, pushed me down into a way-too-small box. I heard my bones snap, but dared not scream. I heard angry voices...then nothing. Father never came back. I was left alone. at was a long time ago. Im not alone anymore. Sometimes, people come play. I like to play hide and seek. When I tire of playing, I eat.

illusions towards the exit. e helpful Grimoire (one of the players) will guide you using images, by pointing at certain details.

Working together, the rest of the players must nd the exit as quickly as possible, while avoiding picking the wrong cards. Watch out for the traitor who will try to lead you astray. To make things even harder - as if they weren’t dicult enough - you’ll encounter a wide variety of traps that will impede player communication on your way to the exit!

Supported by rich content, Obscurio provides a fresh new experience by putting the emphasis on the details of the images and the constant doubt created by the presence of a traitor. Communicate eciently and avoid the illusions as you escape the Sorcerer's library in Obscurio!

Obscurio supports 2 to 8 players, ages 10 and up, with a playtime of about 40 minutes. In stock now at HBB&G.

5. HorrifiedImagine living in a place so wretched that it's not plagued by one, two, or even three monsters — but seven of the most horrifying ends! In Horried, you'll come face to face with them all as you work together

to rid your town of the maniacal or misunderstood creatures - before it's too late.

Horrifed is a cooperative board game in which you and your fellow heroes must work together to defend your town against the onslaught of Dracula, e Wolfman, Frankenstein, e Bride of Frankenstein, e Mummy, e Invisible Man and e Creature from the Black Lagoon. Each monster is unique and requires dierent strategies and tactics to be defeated.

Horried includes high-quality sculpted miniatures and an innovative, easy-to-learn, cooperative gameplay with varying levels of diculty. 1 to 5 players, ages 10 and up, can play Horried in about 60 minutes. In stock now.

You can sign up to receive text messages on our website or in the store, join us on Meetup, and/or follow us on Face-book to receive notication of the next game auction and other events at Here Be Books & Games.

illusions towards the exit. e helpful Grimoire (one of the players) will guide you using images, by pointing at certain details.

Supported by rich content, Obscurio provides a fresh new experience by putting the emphasis on the details of the images and the constant doubt created by the presence of a traitor. Communicate eciently and avoid the illusions as you escape the Sorcerer's library in Obscurio!
