The Queensland Museum Network welcomed more visitors to its museums than ever before.• 1,326,638peoplevisitedamuseumintheQueenslandMuseumNetwork,surpassingthepreviousyear’smillionmilestonerecordby32%andexceedingthisyear’stargetbymorethan18%.
• Forthefirsttime,morethanonemillionvisitorsexperiencedtheQueenslandMuseumandSciencentreinoneyear.Together,theywelcomedacombined1,085,363visitors,31%morethanthepreviousyear.
• Mummy: Secrets of the TombfromTheBritishMuseumbecamethemostsuccessfulinternationaltouringexhibitioninQueenslandMuseumhistorywhenitconcludeditsexclusivesixmonthBrisbaneruninOctober2012.Itspopularityledtoasixweekextensionandatotalof207,399visitorswereimmersedinthestoryofa2800yearoldmummyand100preciousartefactsfromancientEgypt.

Revenuegeneratedfrommuseumentryfeesandmembershipgrewby44%comparedto2011–12.ThesuccessoftheMummy: Secrets of the TombandExplore-a-sauruspaidentryexhibitionsattheQueenslandMuseumcontributedsignificantlytothisresult.AnewQueenslandMuseum&SciencentremembershipprogramwasintroducedinFebruary2013andtheMuseumofTropicalQueenslandintroducedapaidmembershipprogramforlocalsforthefirsttime.
Retailsalesincreasedsignificantly—37%higherthan2011–12—dueinparticulartothesuccessoftheMummy: Secrets of the TombexhibitionattheQueenslandMuseum.
TheQueenslandMuseumFoundationsecuredover$743,000infinancialcontributionsfromsponsorsanddonorstosupporttheworkoftheQueenslandMuseumNetworkin2012–13.
Priorityprojectswerecompletedandothersprogressedunderthebusinessinnovationplanthatwasdevelopedin2011–12toensuretheorganisation’sfinancialsustainability.Bestpracticesystemsimplementedin2012–13werezero-basedbudgeting,projectmanagementmethodology,andaninvestmentmanagementprocess.Venueandeventmanagement,clientrelationshipmanagementandtransactionalbusinessprogramswerescopedin2012–13forimplementationin2013–14.
FiveyearexhibitionandexperienceplansweredevelopedinlinewiththebrandstrategyforeachmuseumwithintheNetwork.

ThenumberofQMcollectionobjectsaccessedforresearch,education,exhibitionandculturalpurposeswas80,247,94%oftheannualtarget,butalmost5,000morethanthe2011–12total.AlowerthanexpecteddemandforphysicalresearchspecimenloanswasduetotheincreasedavailabilityofdigitalcollectionsaswellasanincreaseddedicationofresourcestotheAtlasofLivingAustralia,whichincludedhighresolutiondigitalimagesofimportantspecimensinthebiodiversitycollections.
Educationalloanscontainingmuseumobjectswereaccessedby818,377Queenslanders,4%morethan2011–12.
Eldersandcommunitymembersfrom15TraditionalOwnergroupsacrossQueenslandcametoQueenslandMuseumtopayrespectstoAncestorsandobjectsin2012–13.TheQueenslandMuseum’srecentlyupgradedSecretSacredstoreandcommunityroomprovidedarespectfulandpeacefulspaceforTraditionalOwnerstovisitwithAncestorsandculturalproperty.
MissingpiecesfromtheBookoftheDeadinQueenslandMuseum’sEgyptiancollectionmadeinternationalheadlinesin2012.
