Subject: Appointments to the Tourist Development Council

Statement of Issue:

This agenda item seeks the Board’s approval to appoint two citizens to serve on the Tourist

Development Council for staggered terms of four years.

Background:

The TDC is an advisory council, per Florida Statute 125.0104, that makes recommendations to the

Board for the effective operation of any special projects or for uses of the tourist development tax

revenue. In addition the TDC reviews expenditures of revenues from the tourist development trust

fund to ensure they support the objectives of the Tourism Development Plan as set forth in

Ordinance No. 15-01.

Analysis:

In search of applicants for the current vacant seats on the Tourist Development Council, Gadsden

County distributed the application for membership on various mediums to attract the appropriate

candidates.

The TDC is composed of nine members appointed to four-year terms by the Board of County

Commissioners as follows:

Three members must be owners or operators of motels, hotels, or other tourist

accommodations in the County and subject to the tourist development tax.

Three members must be persons who are involved in the tourist industry and who have

demonstrated an interest in tourist development, but who are not owners or operators of

motels, hotels, or other tourist accommodations in the County and subject to the tax.

One member of the council shall be the Chairman of the Board or any other member of the

Board as designated by the Chairman, and who shall serve as vice chairman of the Council.

Two members of the Council shall be elected municipal officials.

All members must be electors of the County. The number of terms served is not limited in Statute

or Ordinance. Vacancies are filled for the remainder of the unexpired term.
