BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Board members present: Art Sanders, Glenn Gollenberg, George McGoldrick, Angela Cahill, George Fellner,

Randy Anway, Rich Connell, Joe Bergin, Linda Batchelder, Susan Wyeth, Kermit Thompson. Gina Calabro,

Executive Director. Absent: John Butkus, Adrienne Nelson, Alan Lagocki. Guests: Amy Zemel

Meeting called to order at 10:05 am.

MOTION: The Consent Agenda, including October 22, 2018 minutes, approved unanimously.

President’s Report: Art Sanders reported the Strategic Council reached consensus on mission and vision

statement at their last meeting. An emerging professional focus group will be held after thanksgiving to

review statements as well, and it will be presented to board for final approval.

Treasurer’s Report: George McGoldrick reported that due to the change in accountants in the past, it was

difficult to create a budget. Therefore, a deficit was budgeted. Membership has been stable, and accounting

is better reflected in reports now. Additional changes to reflect income accounts and reserves will be made.

MOTION: Treasurer’s report approved unanimously.

The 2019 budget was presented for final approval. MOTION: 2019 budget approved unanimously.

Allied Members: MOTION: The following application for Allied Membership was unanimously

approved: Bond Brothers of New Haven, CT

Executive Director’s Report: Gina reported that David Barkin, the Connecticut State Architect has invited

association Executive Directors to attend a meeting to revitalize the Industry Advisory Council in late

November – she will be attending. In June 2019, NE COTE will have its leadership conference and is looking

for more regional representation. The recent NE COTE conference call included Gina Calabro, Randy Anway

and John Rountree from AIA Connecticut. Gina sat in on webinar about Healthcare Sharing Plan, where AIA

has an opportunity to group with other organizations to offer a healthcare sharing plan. Angela Cahill asked

that we discuss the group healthcare issues with our lobbying firm now that a new governor has been

elected. The A.R.E lecture series is planned for 2019. Informational booklets were handed out to board

members. The new committee program information and approval process was discussed. YARD’s Friendly

Firms Survey results were also part of the board packet and discussed.

Committee Reports: Committee Reports were given in the Annual Meeting held prior to this board meeting.

MOTION: Meeting adjourned at 10:55 am. The next meeting is on December 17th at 3:30 pm.

Membership: AIA Membership to date is up 16 members.

Industry Advisory Council: Attended the organizational meeting on November 27th with the following:

The council will meet quarterly to discuss working with the state and any issues that arise.

Relationship Building and Meetings:

▪ Met with Enterprise Builders about their K-12 Initiative. Additional meeting set for January with

University of Hartford to discuss undergrad initiative.

▪ Met with James Albis, ED at Green Building Council. We are looking to collaborate on an event in

2019.

▪ Met with Achievement First Greenfield (charter schools), about designing curriculum for their

“Expeditions” program. Their students take 2-week courses centered around a specific career

field and do a deep-dive into its real-world work. They are design an architecture expedition for

Fall 2019.

▪ Held a focus group with Nancy Alexander and Emerging Professionals

▪ Met with the UConn Foundation about the Connecticut Brownfields Initiative.

• New Board Member Orientation was held on December 7th

• Attended the Structural Engineers Dinner on December 12th

• Attending the University of Hartford Department of Architecture Advisory Board meeting on

December 18, 2018

NE COTE Leadership Conference: This group is starting to put ideas in place for the event in June. I

would like to see if we can find sponsors or the revenue to be a part of this for 2019.

Healthcare: Association Healthcare Plans were launched in October but have yet to fully finalized. I

am setting up meetings with a few insurance agencies to gather more information with hopes we can

launch this in 2019.

Guides for Equitable Practice: A webinar was held a few weeks ago on the 3 new guides just released.

CAF – Roche Film Screening and Reception: Date is set for January 25th at Wesleyan Ring Center.

Tickets are $100 for the reception and film, $25 Film only.
