New Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following terms of reference for new scholarships, awards, bursaries and prizes. Sandra Oosterhoff Memorial Bursary (Faculty of Law) Awarded annually to a full-time student registered in any year in the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Online financial need applications are available through the Registrar’s Web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Office of the Registrar will select the recipient. This bursary was established in memory of Sandra Oosterhoff (BA‘61, LLB‘64), whose character and courage in the face of adversity inspired those who knew her. Reflecting her generosity and concern for others, this bursary was created through Foundation Western by friends, family, classmates and faculty colleagues of her husband, Albert Oosterhoff. Value: 1 at $800 Effective: 2010-2011 academic year This award is offered through the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program, and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements. Allen K. Philbrick PhD Scholarship in Cultural Geography (School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Geography) Awarded to a full-time PhD student in good standing who is studying Cultural Geography, based on academic achievement. To be eligible, a student must be in Years 2 to 4 of a PhD program and be undertaking research on some cultural process or cultural phenomena’s spatial impact on the human environment. Candidates can obtain an application through the Graduate Affairs Committee in the Department of Geography by presenting their research prospectus. A committee in the Department of Geography, with at least one representative who is a current member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will select the recipient. Award recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship more than once throughout their academic career at Western. This award was established through Foundation Western. Value: 1 at $1,000 Effective: May 2010 Vladimir Stritesky Engineering Award (Faculty of Engineering) Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in any engineering program who has a minimum 70% average and demonstrated f inancial need. Preference will be given for topics in European military history. Students must submit a graded copy of an essay written in the last twelve months (3,000 word minimum) to the History Department by April 10. The History Department will promote the prize with the appropriate professors and students. A committee within the Department of History will select the student recipient. This prize was established by Professor Maya Shatzmiller in memory of her late husband, Mr. Severin Flikerski. Value: 1 at $150 Effective: 2010-2011 to 2014-2015 academic years Joel Fried Scholarship in Economics (Faculty of Social Science, Economics) Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering third or fourth year in an Honors Specialization or Major in Economics, based on high academic achievement in the previous year (minimum 80% average). The student must have completed at least 0.5 course in Monetary Economics or Financial Economics. The scholarship and awards committee in the Faculty of Social Science will select the recipient. This scholarship was established by memorial donations received in memory of Joel Fried, a Professor Emeritus in Economics, and a bequest through Foundation Western by Christopher James Grimes (BA Honors Economics ‘55). Value: 1 at $1,400 Effective: 2010-2011 academic year Dr. D.S.M. Haines Gold Medal and Book Prize (Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Clinical Biochemistry) Awarded annually to an outstanding student graduating with the highest average from the Clinical Biochemistry Honors Specialization Program. The recipient will be selected by the Progression and Awards Committee within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. T his G old Medal and B ook Prize were established by donations made in memory of Dr. Haines, Professor & former Chair of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry, and Chief of Biochemistry, London Health Sciences Centre. Value: 1 Gold Medal (Standardized Medal Cost of $100) and Book Prize of $200 (to be awarded as a gift certificate, UWO Book Store) Effective: 2010-2011 to 2017-2018 academic years inclusive Robert and Ruth Keilty Award in Management and Organizational Studies (Faculty of Social Science, MOS) Awarded annual ly t o a f ull-time student enrolled i n t hird y ear of any m odule of t he Managem ent and Organizational Studies Program (MOS), based upon academic achievement in MOS the previous year, and demonstrated financial need. Value: 1 at $1,500 Effective: 2010-2011 to 2014-2015 academic years only Men’s B asketball F utures S cholarships ( Any U ndergraduate, Graduate or Affiliated U niversity C ollege Student-Athletic Award [Basketball]) Awarded to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in any year of any degree program at Western, including the Affiliated University Colleges, who are making significant contributions as members of the Men’s Basketball T eam. A s per O UA and C IS r egulations, an ent ering student athlete must have a minimum admission average of 80% and a non-entering student must have an in-course average of 70%. Candidates must be i n c ompliance w ith c urrent O UA and C IS r egulations. T he W estern A thletic Financial Awards Committee will select the recipients based on its evaluation of academic performance/potential (20%), and the written recommendations from the Head Coach assessing athletic performance/potential and team/campus leadership (weighted as 60% and 20% respectively). Scholarship and Award Revisions On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following revisions to the Terms of Reference of scholarships, awards, bursaries and prizes: Bob Gage Athletic Leadership Awards (Any Undergraduate or Graduate Student, Constituent University only – Athletic Award) Change in criteria and value from: Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in any year of any degree program, who are also members of a varsity team competing for a national (CIS) Championship or NCAA Division 1 Championship, based on athletic leadership. Candidates in first year must have a minimum 80% admission average and candidates in second year or higher must have a minimum 70% average. The recipients will be selected by the Faculty of Health Sciences' School of Kinesiology Awards Committee. Candidates who are varsity athletes must be in compliance with current OUA and CIS regulations. These awards were established by a generous gift from an alumnus of Western through Foundation Western. Value: 3 at $1,500 To: Awarded to students entering first year of a full-time undergraduate degree program at Western’s main campus who are members of a varsity team. Preference will be given to students in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and f ield, and m en’s s quash. C andidates w ho ar e intercollegiate student athletes must be in compliance with current OUA and CIS regulations. As per OUA and CIS regulations, an entering student athlete must have a minimum admission average of 80%. The Office of International Student Services will select the recipient. This award is made possible by the generosity of Western's UK alumni through Foundation Western. To: UK Alumni Award Awarded to a full-time student in any year of an undergraduate degree program who is a resident or citizen of the United Kingdom, or to a student on an incoming international exchange to Western, based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student entering as a full-time student. In the event that a full-time student can not be found, the Registrar's Office will collaborate with the International Student Services Office to select a student on exchange. The AEO offers pre-admission to the Richard Ivey School of Business for outstanding candidates graduating from secondary school. Admission criteria information is available at the Richard Ivey School of Business. Students must also have demonstrated leadership qualities at school and/or in their community and demonstrate financial need. A student may retain this scholarship for year two by achieving an 'A' average in year one and continuing to demonstrate leadership qualities at school and/or in the community and financial need. If a student does not qualify to retain the scholarship for the second year of the HBA program, another student in year two who achieved an 'A' average in year one and has demonstrated leadership qualities at school and/or in the community and financial need will receive the scholarship. Application forms are available at the Office of the Registrar and the Admission Office of the Richard Ivey School of Business and must be completed and returned to the Office of the Registrar not later than September 1st. Final selection will be made by the HBA Scholarship Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business. B)One scholarship will be awarded to a student entering year two of the HBA program who achieved an 'A' average in year one and has dem onstrated leadership qual ities at s chool and/or i n t he c ommunity and financial need.
