o Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell in 1907 as “Scouting for Boys”o Lieutenant-General in the British Army. Fought in the Second Boer War (1899) and against the Zulu’s in what is now

South Africa. He was Garrison Commander during the Siege of Mafeking. He defended it against insurmountable odds by the use of deception – fake mine fields, barbed wire and wooden canons. During the 3rd World Jamboree, the Prince of Wales announced he had been created a “peer.” Hence – Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell. Gilwell Park being the international training center for Scout Leaders.

Boy Scouts brought to America in 1910 by William D. Boyce (Feb 8, 1910)o Known thereafter as the “Birthday of Scouting”o William D. Boyce was a wealthy Newspaper owner – employed an army of news paper boys.o When was troop 457 founded = 1940 Pack 457 = 1948o Chartering (Sponsoring) Institution – English Evangelical Lutheran Church

o What does it mean?o Define “Leave No Trace.”

What does "Scouting Spirit" mean to you - why? What values has Scouting taught you that you think others see in you - at home, in his unit, at school and/or in the community? Left hand shake – why: 2 reasons:

o Closest to hearto Lord Baden Powell was fighting in the Second Boar Wars and noted that the African Natives, who carried a spear & a

shield, had to lower their shield to shake an opponent’s hand and thereby lowered their guard and had to place their trust in such an opponent. William D. Boyce extrapolated this into our American Indian Heritage and used the American Indian carrying a spear and a shield instead of the African counterpart.

water -- or repeatedly apply warm cloths to affected ears, nose, or cheeks -- for 20 to 30 minutes.o Move thawed areas as little as possible.o Re-freezing of thawed extremities can cause more severe damage. Prevent re-freezing by wrapping the thawed areas and

keeping the victim warm.o If the frostbite is extensive, give warm drinks to the victim in order to replace lost fluids.

oo Do not use – only in loss of life & limb emergencies!o Tourniquets, when tightened, will control the bleeding.

Wrap the material once around the limb and tie an overhand knot; Place a short stick on the overhand knot and tie a square knot over it. Twist the stick rapidly to tighten the tourniquet. The stick may be tied in place with another strip of material.

o A tourniquet must be tight enough to stop the blood flowing to the limb.o If the pressure from the tourniquet is less than the arterial pressure, arterial bleeding will continue. o Also, insufficient tourniquet pressure may actually increase the amount of bleeding from the veins.o Be sure to draw the tourniquet tight enough to stop the bleeding. However, do not make it any tighter than necessary. o After you have brought the bleeding under control with the tourniquet, apply a sterile compress or dressing to the wound

and fasten it in position with a bandage. o CAUTION: NEVER apply a tourniquet unless the hemorrhage is so severe that it cannot be controlled in any other

way. By the time the tourniquet is required, the victim will have lost a considerable amount of blood; therefore, once a tourniquet has been applied, it should be released only by medical personnel.

o Here are the points to remember when you use a tourniquet: Do not use a tourniquet unless you cannot control the bleeding by any other means. Do not use a tourniquet for bleeding from the head, face, neck, or trunk. Use it only on the limbs. Always apply a tourniquet above the wound and as close to the wound as possible.

blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.

Orienteering Demonstrate how to orient a map

o Orienting the map will get it pointing in the right direction so that the map features conform to the features and directions of the real world.

Find the declination diagram in the map's margin. It looks like a little V and tells you the difference between magnetic north (where a compass needle points) and map north (the top of the map)

Note the number of degrees magnetic north is to the left or right of the map's north. (The diagram will indicate if magnetic north is the same as map north.)

Twist the compass base plate, the rectangular plate on which the compass dial is mounted, until the direction of travel line on the plate lines up with the zero mark on the compass dial.

Line up one of the long sides of the compass adjusted in step 3 with one of the map's north-south margins. Make sure the direction of travel arrow on the compass points to north on the map.

Rotate map and compass until the magnetic needle of the compass points to the number of degrees the magnetic north is to the right or left of map north. For example, if the declination diagram shows the magnetic north as 10 degrees to the left of map north, the compass needle should point 10 degrees to the left of the zero mark.

The map is now oriented. North on the map (the top) points to north in the real world.

Tips: Some maps have declination diagrams with three arrows: magnetic north, map north, and geographic north. Map north

points toward the top of the map, and geographic north points towards the top of the earth. In this case, line up the compass with geographic north in step 4 instead of the map's vertical margins.

Local declination (the difference between map north and magnetic north) is different in every part of the world, so you must check the declination every time you use a new map.
