“What you have to remember is that baseball isn’t a week or a month but a season, and a season is a long time” - Chuck Tanner (Pittsburgh World Series Manager,1979)

This season definitely feels like it’s been a long one; we have seen team, club and individual’s successes. We have had players and officials travel far and wide to further their knowledge. We welcomed new families and players to our sport, and we said goodbye to some that have impacted our game.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Nathan Davison, our outgoing CEO as he embarks on a new journey. I wish him well and thank him for his tireless work, passion and dedication to ensure our sport prospers. I welcome Sarah Kelly to the GM position, and as the incumbent she will bring her own style of driving BSA towards achieving our overall strategic plan.

I would like to acknowledge all clubs that participated in finals, and congratulate the winners, special congratulations to Sturt Baseball Club for winning both women’s and men’s Division 1 grand finals.

I would like to acknowledge our volunteers across all clubs, without this passionate group of people the doors would not open, the fields would not be prepared, the canteens would not operate, and the bars would not serve.

Our financial statement shows an operating profit of $9,788 compared to a deficit of $28,477 in 2017/18, the numbers will vary slightly due to the timings. Our overall cash position continues to strengthen as outlined in the audited financial statement. This season we repaid our loan to Baseball Australia for the purchases of the grandstands at Diamond Sports. We welcomed Jenny Dunn to the Finance Directors role in July, unfortunately due to increasing work commitments she resigned in March, I would like to thank Jenny for her contribution in navigating the transition to Xero and her knowledge transfer.

Super League was introduced this season and it certainly didn’t happen without some considerable contribution from Eric Balnar, Chris Adamson, Nathan Davison and overseen by Colin Alexander. The concept was well received and certainly created awareness around the country. The BSA Board have again voted to underwrite the competition for 2019/2020.

Our women’s competition continues to impress, with all but one Division 1 Club fielding a team. Congratulations to the State Women’s team winning bronze at the Nationals.

I want to acknowledge Nick Hutchings, who at 22 was appointed Little League coach for Seahawks and managed his team to silver medal at the national Little League championships. He then went on to take the team to compete in the Cal Ripken World Series, Missouri. This was an impressive coaching debut.

I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of our By-Law review committee as well as the tireless work from the Heritage committee. Special thanks to Alan Waldron as he steps down from the chair and Paul Begg assumes the role.

Many thanks to the BSA staff, Board, clubs, scorers and umpires who are all instrumental in providing the infrastructure which enables the players to bring the game to life.

As an organisation we will continually work with key stakeholders and strategic partners to ensure we put baseball at the forefront.

What an exciting 4 months it has been in the chair of General Manager at Baseball SA. I have certainly hit the ground running and my learnings of baseball have skyrocketed. Baseball in South Australia certainly provides many varied user groups a dynamic environment for growth and development across all areas of the sport.

I have been impressed with the welcome support from the club presidents, members, umpire’s association, scorer’s association, heritage committee and regional centres. Although I have not had the time to reach all key stakeholders, those that I have connected with and worked together on a few key strategies have been instrumental in implementing some minor changes and identifying areas needing further attention.

The Strategic Plan, as developed by the Board of Baseball SA, identifies the goal to “Increase our Profile and Brand and Offer an interactive sport for all”. As an outsider coming in, I can see that this goal is shared amongst the community with many clubs being very active in the wider community, in schools and now offering a more inclusive product with both men and women playing the game.

Competitions and EventsThe SABL went from strength to strength this year with a record number of women playing in club land. We saw 22 women’s teams contest Division 1 and Division 2 with Sturt and Glenelg taking out each title respectively. The Division 1 men’s grand final saw Sturt victors over Goodwood, which set many records in the history books for Sturt, one breaking their 28-year drought last winning the Division 1 crown back in 1991!

Other divisions were well represented by most clubs, showing that the depth of teams and skills in club land is healthy, especially with the juniors where numbers continue to climb and clubs flourish.

The introduction of the Super League was a great initiative where we saw four teams formed through a draft process and played midweek, live streamed and broadcast on free to air TV with fantastic exposure and reach through social media. This will definitely be back on the calendar for the 2019/20 year.

The women introduced a couple of All-Star games to their annual events, attracting many interested fans down to the ballpark further promoting the female game.

Baseball SA continue to hold their head high with the professionalism shown when delivering quality events such as the Capps Awards night and Junior Presentation evening, both with outstanding results and well attended by the community.

Participation and DevelopmentWith the many diverse programs running around the state in clubs and schools, participation is on the rise and athlete development continues to improve, evident through results at the national level.

Sporting Schools has been a big growth area for us in the past year and will continue to develop as we reach more and more schools offering better programs and carnivals. One of our main goals in this space is to have an annual primary school’s carnival, increasing exposure and capturing new membership data.

Development covers many areas and what I can report on is the growing number of qualified coaches and umpires within our association. We will be working harder in this space to ensure clubs are supported with coach and umpire accreditation courses for their members, running regular programs and having these available both online and face to face.

What is impressive to see is the number of dedicated and committed volunteers in baseball in SA. Sports rely heavily on volunteers in order to run competitions and events and this is a space I can see baseball clubs are already heavily invested in.


PerformanceBaseball SA has opened up a number of new opportunities for children to represent their charter and/or state, with the newly formed Under 15 girls’ squad, who were unable to attend the 2019 Under 16 Nationals, however, will be aiming to attend the 2020 Nationals. These girls were granted entry into the State Charter Tournament, competing in the Little League Development, where they managed to pull off a valuable win.

With the inclusion of a Little League Development this year at the State Charter Tournament we were pleased to see Mount Gambier take the drive to Adelaide to participate also. Fantastic to see 13 teams competing at the State Charter Tournament.

The boys Under 18 and Under 16 teams travelled to Sydney, Blacktown to compete in the Australian Youth Championships in January 2019. The Under 18 boys narrowly missed out on a podium finish with a nail biting 4th, while the 16’s finished 8th with some very tough competition.

The women’s nationals were held in Canberra in April 2019 over Easter, with the women bringing home the bronze medal after a fantastic tournament.

Governance and LeadershipWith the Adelaide Football Club taking ownership of the Adelaide Bite, this resulted in a change of leadership within the office structure. The new leadership will allow for a more holistic approach to the growth and development of baseball in SA, improving relationships with key stakeholders and re-aligning our operations with the strategic plan.

The relationship with the Adelaide Bite will continue to be an important one, with the Bite being an integral part of the pathway for our young aspiring athletes. We will continue to nurture the relationship and work together for the greater good of baseball, delivering on strategic outcomes and increasing exposure and brand awareness.

Communication and ProfileThis year we have seen vast improvements to communication methods and reach to our community. With the increased activity on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn, Baseball SA is now actively engaging with new audiences.

With the ability to live stream through Facebook and then free to air TV for the Super League, Women’s Div 1 and Div 2 Grand Finals and Men’s Div 1 Grand Final series, this exposed the sport to over 5000 viewers worldwide.

The introduction of a monthly newsletter, regular website updates and the work currently being performed to create a new sponsorship proposal document will raise the profile and recognition of the Baseball SA brand.

FacilitiesBaseball SA acknowledges that the West Beach facility is in need of some major improvements. With the engagement of Tredwell Management Services through a successful grant application by Diamond Sports, both Baseball and Softball were able to obtain a full statewide audit and strategic facilities plan. This plan is yet to be finalised but will be a valuable tool to identify what facilities exist statewide for both sports, along with recommendations regarding prioritisation of upgrades funding and grants.

We will continue in the new year to invest in time and people to improve our facilities in order to make West Beach a centre of excellence in order to attract many state, national and international opportunities.

I am ready and looking forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead with the belief that we will reach success through the people, systems and processes in place to engage the baseball community, continue to deliver a professional service, offer opportunities across all areas in our sport and remain connected to our community to take a collaborative approach.

STATEMENT BY MEMBERS OF THE BOARD

The Board has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity and that this special purpose financial report should be prepared in accordance with the accounting policies outlined in Note 1 to the financial statements.

In the opinion of the Board the financial report as set out on pages 5 to 16:

1. Presents a true and fair view of the financial position of South Australian Baseball League Incorporated as at 30 April 2019 and its performance for the year ended on that date.

2. At the date of this statement, there are reasonable grounds to believe that South Australian Baseball League Incorporated will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due.

3. In accordance with Section 35(5) of the Associations Act 1985 the Board of the South Australian Baseball League Incorporated, hereby states that during the year ended 30 April 2019:

Opinion We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report of the South Australian Baseball League Inc. (the Association), which comprises Board’s Report, the Statement by Members of the Board, the Profit and Loss Statement, the Statement of Financial Position, the Statement of Changes in Equity, the Statement of Cash Flows and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes for the year ended 30 April 2019. In our opinion the financial report of the Association presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Association as at 30 April 2019, and of its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies used and described in Note 1 to the financial report and the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985. Basis of Opinion We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described as in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Association in accordance with the auditor independence requirements of the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. Emphasis of Matter – Basis of Accounting We draw attention to Note 1 of the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report is prepared for the purposes of fulfilling the financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985. As a result the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our report is intended solely for the Association and should not be distributed to or used by parties other than the Association. Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter. Responsibilities of Management and Those Charged with Governance Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the accounting policies used and described in Note 1 to the financial statements and the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985, and for such internal control as the Management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial report, Management is responsible for assessing the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matter related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless Management either intends to liquidate the Association or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. Those charged with governance are responsible for overseeing the Association’s financial reporting process.

Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that the audit conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of financial report. As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:

Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Association’s internal control. Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by management. Conclude on the appropriateness of the management’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Association to cease to continue as a going concern. Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

The profile and reputation of our game and our league depend on many factors: the clubs, the players, the board, the success of our teams, and the actions of people in the baseball fraternity at home and around the world. There’s also a bit of luck involved; especially in the era of social media, it doesn’t take much to sully or sanctify any organisation and its people.

This can happen through no fault of our own, but there are actions we can take to minimise the risk of negative and unwanted publicity. The board this year has continued to examine our social media policy, and by the beginning of the 2019-20 season will have in place an updated policy that reflects the use and potential abuse of existing digital technology today.

We have made a strong move in promoting news of our sport, however. General Manager Sarah Kelly and her staff have implemented a newsletter that is regularly updating us all on news at all levels of the sport. As many of you know, this is a communications tool we have been trying to implement on a regular basis for some time, and it’s fantastic that Sarah has seen it as a priority. Please make it as valuable as possible by providing news, tips and articles of interest to the office.

We will also endeavour to capture your thoughts and ideas by revisiting surveys of our members, to ensure we are acting and communicating with you in the manners you expect and are of most value.

On a similar note, Baseball SA needs a website that reflects its status as the place most people now turn to as the ‘first port of call’ for information. Our website has been and remains a very valuable repository of information, but there is always room for improvement, and we will be exploring how to ensure it meets the needs of existing and potential members of our baseball community. There is always a danger of assuming people know what we know; our website should be a wonderful resource for newcomers to the sport as well as the fan of many years.

Of course, a major component of our marketing efforts in recent years has been the Adelaide Bite. The acquisition of the Bite has created many opportunities for baseball at the elite level; within Baseball SA, we must contemplate how best to market ourselves without that spearhead. In the year ahead, we will be reviewing all facets of our Strategic Plan. The components of it that refer to the Bite will be a major part of this review, as we recognise and respond to the new ‘playing field’. It will be a challenge, particularly as we strive to secure sponsors and partners, but as our sport prepares for the 2020 Olympics, it is one we accept with excitement.

Baseball South Australia, in conjunction with Baseball Australia, Diamond Sports SA and West Beach Parks, hosted the 2019 Australia Junior League Championship at West Beach, Adelaide from 26 - 31 May 2019.

In their fourth year of hosting this event Baseball South Australia and all their amazing volunteers and staff have once again provided a great event for the 12 teams from across Australia all competiting for the chance to play in the Junior League World Series. Although the event experienced some inclement weather, all games scheduled were still completed, ensuring that all players, officials and the thousands of spectators thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the championship.

A special mention to the Glenelg Baseball Club and their great volunteers for quickly stepping up to the plate and providing access to their great facility to keep the tournament running for the first 4 days, from all involved in the event a sincere thank you for all your efforts.

The Championship saw 6 days of competition with 32 games contested, with Northern Metros walking away as the 2019 Australian Junior League Champions, who will represent the Australia Region at the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan USA.

Baseball Australia is looking forward to what the future will bring with this event and the great partnership with Baseball SA and Diamond Sports SA.

It has been another great year working with the different groups including the Scorers Association, BUASA and regional groups.

I think there has been some major improvements in each area including;

With particular respect to the umpires, it was clear that perhaps not all strategies worked this season (eg. the registration process) however it is clear that persistence with these is required. We are certainly heading in the right direction with particular thanks to Blake Halligan and Ian Reval working hard to ensure we have the best umpires in the country.

It was pleasing to see Payne Sowter attend an intensive umpiring course in the US with the MLB. This is a great example of how we can improve our local umpires and then see that knowledge come back and disseminate throughout the rest of the umpiring ranks.

It has been pleasing to see the umpiring and scorers involvement in the new Super League competition and the number of umpires and scorers that are now involved in all our National Tournaments.

I think there is still much work to be done with all of these groups and I continue to look forward to the opportunities to connect and grow these associations.

I have been excited to see the progress achieved this year and look forward to the steps forward we can make again in 2020.

Congratulations to the Sturt Baseball Club on winning the Championship in 2 games vs Goodwood. Sturt was the fifth different team to win the Division 1 shield in as many years. In Division 2, West Torrens were too strong for Southern Districts and for the first Division 3 Grand Final at West Beach Glenelg outlasted Adelaide in extra innings.

The Division 1 schedule was reduced back to thirty games season this year to allow for the inaugural season of Super League being played on Wednesday Nights before Christmas at West Beach. Other changes to schedules this year was Division 3 being moved to Sundays and playing in front of Division 2 & Division 1, which moved Under 17s to the back end of the day and allowed clubs with more than 1 team to let them play in their age group. Unfortunately, The Don Rice League was unable to continue this season but we will continue to look for ways and or a time slot for it to return to our junior schedule.

The first Super League was a four team, nine game season with the teams selected via a draft. A concept to provide competition that bridges the gap between SABL & the ABL and allowing our elite youth to play in a higher competition. There was a lot of positive feedback for those involved and we look forward to the second version in season 2019/20.

Our Women’s Baseball program continues to get better with 19 teams split into 2 divisions up from the 13 teams playing last season. With our state team winning bronze at this years National Championship shows that the competition is improving every year. The next step is the addition of an Under 15 competition to add to the pathway for girls in baseball.

The By-Laws committee continue to review our playing rules with the biggest change made last year being the limit of one import per club. This move, which maybe initially has weakened our league, in the long term can allow for more home grown baseballers to play at the Division 1 level.

We continue to get better with our no tolerance approach towards umpire abuse in all grades and it is pleasing to see the improvement in this area, this should and will be a long-term approach by all clubs and players. It can be an intense game at times, but we still must be aware of our actions on the field towards the opposition and officials.

With another season in the books we will look at all the areas that we can improve on as attention is turned to the coming 2019/20 season.

It’s hard to believe that another season has been and gone and we are now looking towards the next season.

Year after year we see our junior competitions continue to expand and the 2018-19 season was no exception. Naturally, the age matrix put some pressure on clubs as well as players; however as we come in line with America it ensures that we meet our obligations with Charter.

The team at Baseball SA once again have done a fantastic job ensuring that our junior players are getting as much game time as possible, that the game is played in the right spirit (also driven by our valued clubs, coaches and participants) and that the quality of our juniors is improving year in and year out. Again, this would not be achievable without the professionalism and input of the clubs and quality coaches they assign.

I would like to thank the Junior Coordinators at all clubs. Having done this role myself, I understand the challenges faced in getting juniors to the club and into the game of baseball, plus the many other tasks involved throughout the season. It can certainly be a hard role that you play within the club and often seems a non-rewarding role until you get into the season and watch a few of your junior teams playing, the smiles on their faces, the passion when they play, the disappointment when they lose and the proud moments when they win. This is often a good reminder of why you do it and makes the endless hours all worth it.

The schools program is growing each year. I remember a few years back when it was introduced and the work involved ensuring that we were a part of it; now the Baseball SA team keep taking it to new levels and it is exciting that we are increasing our chances of exposing our wonderful game of baseball to more and more younger people.

Our junior charter teams are continuously on the improve and each year we see our charter teams getting more and more competitive. This is a testament to Tyrone, the coaches and their staff plus the dedicated parents that sit out at training, hour after hour, week after week.

The 2018/19 baseball season was another busy one here in South Australia, with numerous successes seen from both team and individual perspectives.

In August, we saw Matthew George and Riley Yeatman represent Australia at the Under 15s World Cup in Panama. Both boys performed extremely well and will continue to grow as baseball players as a result of this experience.

October saw a new High-Performance initiative introduced with the inaugural Super League Baseball season kick off. The 4-team competition was comprised of the Clippers, Carp, Wasps and the Crushers. General Managers were appointed for each team and saw Scott Pratt (Wasps), Chris Lawson (Clippers), Mark Haylock (Carp) and Michael Dunn (Crushers) as the decision makers for each of the teams. Interest was extremely high from the outset and saw over 120 players register for the draft, which made for some tough selections for the GM’s. Anthony Herrera was announced the first ever number 1 pick and lead a high-class contingent of local and international players into the new league.

The National Youth Championships in January saw the Under 18s team finish 4th under the guidance of Tyrone Hambly, Lachy Eldridge and Phil Hirschausen, with Renae Kortekaas as the Executive Officer. The Under 16s staff took away one of the youngest teams in recent memory and finished 8th. Many of these players will return for another championship, with some having an additional two. Andrew Scott, Dave Sims and Andrew Sperling took the reins with the assistance of Darren Unger as the E.O.

At the completion of the tournament, Blake Farr was rewarded for his unbelievably hard work and named in the Australian Under 18s team which immediately flew to Guam for the Oceania Qualifiers. In addition to this, Blake was chosen as a member of an Australian Prospect Program who participated in the Perfect Game Showcase Series, located in Florida during May to help push for selection in the final team to go to the World Cup later this year. Tyson McKee and Will Kortekaas were selected in the Australian Schoolboys team which toured the U.S. in September. Will Kortekaas was also chosen as an Australian representative for the MLB Showcase Tour last September, however had to pull out due to injury.

The 2018/19 ABL season saw several young South Australian prospects make their debut at the top level, with Thomas Fitzgerald, Blake Farr and Matt Hutchings all seeing game time and gaining invaluable experience.

The Open Women’s team finished their tournament with a bronze medal, which was a first for the state and a real credit to the coaching staff of Lawrie Moore, Lynton Arscott and Risa Nakashima, and testament to the effort that has been put into women’s baseball in South Australia. The team performed extremely well under their guidance and beat a highly favoured NSW team for the bronze medal.

Momentum continues to build in the High-Performance space, and it is exciting to see the constant growth and improvement of the program. The increased use of technology will help us to speak the same language that is being used on the world scale.

With such an exciting group of young players emerging, the future is bright for baseball in South Australia and I really look forward to seeing it prosper.

Having to look back over the 2018/2019 season is interesting, and a challenging year, with so many things happening.

Chris Adamson restructured how the Bite Academy worked this year, introducing a High-Performance Academy working with specialist coaches during the off-season.

The Bite Academy was also run to accommodate the younger aged athletes during the winter months. Some 40 youth players received additional coaching to improve their game skills.

The first year of the Super League Baseball played on Wednesday nights with four teams competing. All reports were very successful.

A visit from three Japanese Baseball University Teams in November was a highlight, playing an SA All-Star Team.

National Level:Under 16’s Andrew Scott was Head Coach finishing with three wins, working harder with this age group and new players coming through. They finished 8th

Under 18’s played off for bronze under Tyrone Hambly as Head Coach. They finished 4th.

Thanks to the coaches, Executive Officers and volunteers for their work for the tournament in both Under 16’s & Under 18’s State Teams.

Special mention to Blake Farr being named in the Australian Under 18’s Oceania qualifying trip to Guam.

Women’s Baseball League:With most clubs now having their own women’s team playing Friday nights, the growth has been impressive. We now have 18 teams for 2018/2019 season in only the fourth season and importantly offering a second division for the clubs to continue to grow the Women’s League.

With the SABL clubs promoting the growth of women’s baseball our next challenge is to grow the Under 15’s Girls Program with our goal to have an Under 15’s youth girls team in the National Championships.

I would like to thank the Women’s & Girls Advisory Committee again for their commitment to women’s sport.

The State Women’s Team competed in the Open Women’s Baseball Championships in Canberra. A great result in winning the BRONZE MEDAL. Well done to all coaches, EO and players.

Coaching Accreditation:This is an ongoing project. Courses are still happening; accreditation was able to be done via working with the Bite Academy under Chris Adamson’s guidance and also club visits, to run Level 2 courses. It is still a high priority for Baseball SA to have all coaches at every level accredited within their clubs.


Baseball SA:A successful year with the growth of the women’s teams in SA and continued expansion of this league and Youth Girls Program.

With the standard of the Little League charters we have some quality baseballers coming through our ranks, feeding all age groups, which is strong position for baseball in SA.

This is my first full year as the pathway manager. It has been a very challenging year with some changes to the charter structure and some new programs along the way. It is a great passion of mine to continue to see a rise in junior playing numbers, to give these kids a very clear pathway to follow and see more of our kids achieve a high level of baseball both within their club and at a state and national level. This year we see one of our young locals attend his first year of Pro ball in Curtis Mead. We saw one of our Under 18 representatives, Blake Farr, put on the Aussie colours and represent us at the Oceania Qualifier for the world cup. We also saw two of our younger players, Riley Yeatman and Matthew George, travel to Panama to represent us in the Under 15 World Cup. These are all extremely great achievements.

The last twelve months have seen some new programs get off the ground as we look to progress into the future, none more important than the Under 15 girls program which hit the ground running after much hard work in organising the structure behind the program. The girls took to the field for the first time against the development teams in the state charter weekend. This was a major milestone in our development of girls in baseball and the girls didn’t disappoint, They pushed every team they played until the very end and eventually picked up their first win, which as a new program was extremely good to see. This program has been a long time coming and I must thank the work of Chris Adamson and Bianca Smith for everything they have contributed in getting it off the ground. We must also recognise the work from Kristen Webb and David Lightbody who have taken on the roles of coaching this young team in its infancy. Their work has ensured that the program has been a success and we thank them for taking it on.

This year we saw our charter competitions within SA undergo some change. Our Junior League has gone from two teams to three meaning we now have the Seahawks, Rays and Marlins in both Little and Junior leagues. This means the Waves and Pirates are no longer charter teams within South Australia, rather we have three organisations that will stretch from Little League Development all the way through to Junior League Charter. This will give poor charters a new sense of pride and allow kids to strive to become members of their charter representative teams. The long-term goal is to extend these organisations all the way up through Senior League charter, however this may still be a few years off as attempt to increase the numbers of our senior leagues within the SABL. Being the first year of this adjustment to the charter structure means we saw some challenges along with some great benefits. We installed roles for each charter known as the General Manger. This was a great initiative aimed to give some ownership back to the regions and allow them to run their own programs. The General Managers this year were;

I wish to thank these people for sharing my views in creating this new structure. It was very much a move that left us in the dark a little as to how it would play out but I can honestly say that I am happy with the result and looking forward to a bigger and better year next year!

PATHWAY MANAGER

Our State Charter Tournament was a huge success this year. We welcome the inclusion from the Under 15 girls’ program along with the return of Mt. Gambier and both teams represented their regions extremely well. We face several difficulties in our state tournament this year with some issues at the field, however all was overcome through some big efforts from BSA staff and external volunteers to ensure the weekend was a success. The outcomes of this years charter tournament saw the following results;

Senior League: The Adelaide Titans overcame the Armada in an enjoyable three game series. The Titans then travelled to Lismore to compete in the Australian Senior League Championships where they fell a little short. Nonetheless these boys showcased some great talent and represented our state extremely well.

Junior League: The Adelaide Rays and Adelaide Seahawks both advanced to the national tournament this year, both beating the Adelaide Marlins in the state tournament. In the first year of the expansion from two teams to three, I am proud to say we had both teams finish the minor round of nationals in the top four seeds. I am even more proud to announce that the Adelaide Rays went on to secure bronze after a very tight 2-1 loss to the eventual winners, the Northern Metros from Perth. A terrific effort. The Adelaide Seahawks went on to finish 8th.

Little League: The Adelaide Marlins won their first state title this year in a tremendous game against the Adelaide Rays. Both teams are currently travelling to Lismore to compete in the national tournament and we wish them both the best of luck.

Baseball SA travelled to Mt. Gambier and ran a training clinic for the community when the Adelaide Bite hosted New Zealand. The clinic was a complete success having 70+ kids turn up to participate on both days. This was a much-needed boost for their community and helped in getting their Little League baseball program up and running again. Next year we are looking at doing something similar and hope that the Mount can produce two teams (1 little league and 1 junior league) for next years tournament. A big thankyou to both the Adelaide Bite and the New Zealand baseball teams for allowing me to access several of their players to assist with this clinic.

I am currently working closely with the Northern Territory and other regions within SA to continue to strive to make our charter and junior baseball programs bigger and better. The next 12 months will see further change in the right direction to improve our junior playing numbers and the direction in which these kids choose. The next 12 months will also see the Under 15 girls program continue to build momentum leading us into the first South Australia Under 16 womens state team competing in the Australian Women’s Youth Championships next April. It is a massive goal but is now within reach. We look forward to seeing these girls continue to progress. I look forward to the challenges that continue to present themselves and hope to continue to improve junior baseball within SA.

Having now completed a full twelve months in the newly created role of Tball & Schools Coordinator, and with the appointment of Sarah Kelly as General Manager, the identification, design, and implementation of some new worthwhile initiatives into the grass roots space of baseball in South Australia has taken off. These initiatives, along with recently tried projects, have added value to the business and strongly align with the strategic plan which gives me an encouraging and positive feel to the next 12 months in the role.

The successful inclusion of the Under 9 Pee Wee League into the 2018/19 SABL competition was a huge accomplishment. Nine of the fourteen clubs entered one team into the pilot program which ran with an eight-game fixture. The modified rules and equipment helped clubs encourage youngsters to have a go but also improved player’s skills and knowledge of the game enough to enable a better transition into Under 11 (Minors) baseball. This project met the strategic goal of “we will structure a league that provides opportunity for all” and we will aim to go one better next season by not only encouraging all clubs to participate in this competition but to include a Baseball SA sanctioned Tball round of games into the 2019/20 fixture.

We will be focused on inclusion moving forward and this will entail Baseball SA working closely with Baseball Australia to offer a non-age based registration fee for those players only wishing to partake in Tball and I am confident with a new database in the pipeline, Baseball SA will overcome this hurdle and strive closer to the goal of inclusiveness.

Participation and development is a strategic directive that I’m very passionate about. I have increased and improved baseball’s Sporting School’s profile in the school community by providing good customer service, high quality Tball coaches and a training plan that is appealing to students. The statistics show that Tball Sporting Schools bookings have increased by 257% which is magnificent. The next venture I’m currently pursuing by way of increasing participation numbers is the design of a Tball Carnival (SAPSASA style) to roll out amongst primary schools, with a focus on year 5 and 6 at this stage. I will also be working on registering the 244 Tball members playing the game at clubs to add to the already 179 members Baseball SA have recorded.

The more Tball registrations we capture means the more these players can participate in Baseball SA sanctioned competitions, along with more bargaining power for baseball grants and the like. I believe it is critically important for ALL children playing Tball or baseball to be registered under the State Sporting Organisation’s banner for a myriad of reasons – my mandate for 2019/20!

Communication is a huge part of our strategic plan and one thing, along with raising baseball’s profile, our team at Baseball SA is giving priority to. During my time I have put in place communication links to all youth delegates, in particular Junior Coordinators and Tball Coordinators, to ensure all information leaving this office is fed through to the right channels. Although I provided a space for clubs to advertise their Tball programs on our website, this communication tool is under review and will be a big player in the move towards making information more accessible. As one member noted in their recent survey response to Baseball SA, the website needs to be an accurate one-stop-shop.

A visit to Pt Pirie highlighted the need for Baseball SA to reignite the relationship with our country friends. This will provide an avenue for me to train country based Tball Coaches to facilitate Sporting Schools programs in country schools which we believe will help the regions build their junior base, with a long term goal to be able to include the regional centres in our state charter tournament.


TBALL & SCHOOLS

Last season saw the scheduling of the last Under 11 round before Christmas moved from clubs to Diamond Sports for a twilight game and immediately following, a Night with the Bite where Under 11s were involved in batting practice with the Bite, on-field Guards of Honour and Baseball Buddies. This event was unanimously voted very worthwhile and loads of fun and I had a great time working with Eric Balnar and Bite interns Tom, Chelsea and Jill during this event. Consequently, it will be repeated for season 2019/20, and possibly an Under 13 round will copy the winning format.

I often contribute to other portfolios within the team which I find very rewarding. I am currently coming to the end of a 2018/19 Season Review which has provided the office with fantastic feedback, ideas, and pathways for improvement. Andrew Scott and I wish to thank the baseball community for their time, contributions and support with this review and I look forward to presenting the Review Action Plan to the public in June.

Many coaches, baseballers and umpires would have noticed some changes to the Playing Rules and Conditions which has been a collaborative exercise amongst staff, one that desperately needed time spent on, and one that we can pre-empt from review feedback, needs to continue. I enjoyed streamlining the rules into one-page condensed versions, I hope this proved worthwhile around the clubs.

In concluding I would like to thank Nathan Davison for his support during my first year in the office and look forward to continuing my working relationship with the Bite staff in the coming season. I am excited about the future of baseball in SA with the experience and knowledge Sarah brings to the team and can’t wait to start implementing all the action items from our review.

This year’s Capps awards evening marked the induction of Greg Elkson into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame is divided into two categories of excellence; playing, and managing or coaching, and is classified by eras.

The standards of criteria for induction into the Hall of Fame are as follows:• Anomineemusthavehadaprolongedimpactonthegameof Baseball at the highest level available at that time;• Anomineemustbeofgoodcharacterandnotbedeemedto have brought the game of Baseball into disrepute by inappropriate behaviour either on or off the field;• Anomineecanonlybeinductedintoonecategoryofexcellence;• Aconsiderationofstatisticalinformation.

We are proud to have one of our local legends be recognised in this select group of members, which dates back over the 160 years of recorded baseball historty in Australia.

Greg Elkson pitched in the South Australian Baseball League over 19 seasons from 1977/78 to 1996/97, totalling 510 senior appearances with the Glenelg, Goodwood, and Southern Districts Baseball Clubs. Over his SABL career he earned the Capps Medal five times: in 1978/79, back to back in 1982/83 and 1983/84, in 1987/88 and 1989/90. Elkson was in three premiership-winning teams at Glenelg, in 1978/79, 1979/80, and 1983/84.

Elkson joined South Australia’s Claxton Shield team in the 1978/79 season and continued to represent the state in this competition until 1987 – with one break in 1985. He was part of the team that won the Claxton Shield in 1980 against New South Wales. Elkson won the Bob Finn Trophy for the best and fairest in South Australia’s Claxton Shield team for three consecutive years from 1981 to 1983. He was later an inaugural player with the Adelaide Giants.

Elkson was selected for the Australian national team from 1979 to 1985, which toured Japan, Korea and North America during this time.

It gives me pleasure to present our 2018 seasons annual report in this our 50th year.The season seen the number of teams playing in six competitions remain at a stable level, and the introduction of an All-Star team for the first time.

This season we made the decision that at the half mark of the season in Peter McGearey League we would split the league into two divisions.

Our major project for year 2017/18 was to complete and distribute a book on the first 80 years of the Capps Medallion. Collecting all the historical information was one thing, however in last year 2018/19 the distribution of them to those living members was another. Tracing recipients who had left the state, moving interstate or overseas was very time consuming. The most pleasing feature of the whole project was tracking down family members of those who had passed away to share with them the history in baseball of their deceased winners. We believe that there is only one recipient that we have been unable to contact at this stage, despite checking with his former clubs in SA etc but remain hopeful that contact will be made in the future. We trust that all clubs will purchase a copy if they have not already done so by contacting the league office as apart from Southern Districts all have medallists. Although Gary Challen was at Henley & Grange when he was successful he spent years with Southern Districts later in life. This booklet we consider to be an excellent heritage item and we trust all copies will eventually be sold. Only approximately 20 remain.

The various awards that we consider are Baseball SA Life Membership and ABF Hall of Fame and Life Membership. We have submitted players and managers to Sport SA for their Awards and they presently lay on the table. Success is difficult with so many other sports and organisations to be considered.

We hold high hopes that in the not too distant future that we will have our own museum, however there are logistical problems and other considerations that must be addressed before this will happen. The amount of paper history and regalia that has been collected over many years is enormous. In 2017 the last SA History Week Baseball presentations were conducted at three locations and received many accolades from the public.

The Heritage Committee has been in operation for almost 10 years and has been responsible for several baseball people to be recognised with appropriate awards. We would like it known that we are not solely responsible of identifying suitable candidates for nomination. Any club or member association and indeed individuals can also submit applications. Notable awards this year have been Greg Elkson inducted into the Australian Baseball Federation Hall of Fame, one year too late in our opinion, whilst we have two more on the table for next year with one being unsuccessful at this time. Although not involved it was extremely pleasing for Peter Kemp to receive the Queens OAM Award for services to the Henley & Grange Baseball Club, Baseball SA, the ABF and the general community. Congratulations to both and well deserved. We are submitting a further nomination for Baseball SA Life Membership this year.

We have also completed a few assignments for Baseball SA this year and submitted some suggestions on data for the Annual Report and previous records. We have enquired as to how we can commence recording history for SACBA and the regional centres.

There will be some changes on the committee next year. Myself, as a foundation member and Ron Chandler who joined a year later have stood down. Paul Begg who was also a foundation member will return as Chairman and Ron Harvey will take over as Secretary. Unfortunately, another loss to the committee will be Doug White who tragically lost his life after an accident at home. Doug served the Adelaide Baseball Club for many years, playing juniors and lower senior grades. He served as a club umpire before joining BUASA where he continued, attaining the highest honours in umpiring Australian Championships at both junior and senior levels. Doug was our quiet achiever and made his mark by researching the history of Baseball in SA and indeed produced a book on the Adelaide Baseball Club from inception to approx 1990 after monumental hours of toil. He was ably supported by his wife Helen and daughters. Vale Doug.

As this will be my last report, I would like to acknowledge the support from Baseball SA personnel In Mark Snelgrove, Nathan Davison and Laura Bond and to the South Australian Baseball Community in general also for their assistance in preserving the history of baseball in this state. I would respectfully recommend that each club and associated associations keep their own history up to date.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the efforts of each member of our committee for their support and enthusiasm in making this Baseball SA Sub-Committee the success it has been and no doubt will continue to be. All of them were and are baseball people.

This season BUASA decided to implement a “Green Shirt” program to highlight the importance of umpiring across all levels of baseball. As this was our first season with this program we sent out a “mission statement” to all clubs to enlighten the need for umpires in our ever expanding competition. The intention was to make aware the importance umpires are to our great game, requiring respect, tolerance and patience to a difficult sport to umpire.

Personally it is becoming increasingly frustrating to still deal with small pockets of spectators from some clubs regarding abuse. If we continue down this path their will be “no umpires” or a diminished group of umpires to officiate the game.

It is every clubs responsibility to encourage, rather than attack our umpires as they go about their business of umpiring. Baseball is an extremely passionate sport, but we deserve respect across the board.

Rumours are circulating the ABL will be again looking to expand the elite competition which can only improve the standard in Australia, but with this umpiring resources need to expand. We have an ageing group of umpires, so we need more people to maybe take up the challenge and learn the finer points of the game.

Blake Halligan does an outstanding job of organising and implementing our Rules meetings, so maybe come along and see how we go about becoming better at umpiring.

UMPIRE AWARDS

With the completion of my first 3-year strategic plan and a solid foundation now in place, I moved onto the new phase of programmes.

In the lead-up to the season, a meeting between key representatives of each club and our umpires ensured all were informed of changes to the official rules, as well as the improvements we were introducing locally. This meeting also served to improve the relationship between our groups. Whilst not all initiatives introduced were successful, most were well received and implemented and serve as a good foundation for the coming season.

Our pre-season training concluded with a transformation of our annual seminar. The Saturday involved an intensive training session which covered all the key areas. The usual programme was expanded to include specific training on the 3-umpire system. The following day was a collaboration with some of the local clubs where we umpired their trial games. This was used as a trial for us as well as we were able to apply the skills learnt from the previous day in real game situations. This new initiative was a big hit and I hope this becomes a regular event. If anyone has seen an umpires practical training session should hopefully appreciate how much of a game-changer this can be for us.

Throughout the season, our umpires heard from many experienced and new speakers sharing their knowledge. It was great to see the likes of Gerard Tancred, Neil Poulton, Ian Reval and Payne Sowter share their expertise with our group.

This season saw the introduction of the tiered umpire payment system which adjusted the match payments umpire receives according to their accreditation level as well as the grade of the game. The added incentive for an umpire to improve their knowledge and application of the rules of the game provided fruitful with many umpires achieving higher accreditation levels.

We welcomed Karen Papps, Ashley Hutchinson and Gemma Letamendia into and welcomed back Shane Quinn to the official umpiring ranks. It is great to see more females joining our ranks and I hope this continues.There were also many new milestones and in particular I would like to congratulate Mark Prior and Paul van der Koogh for presiding over their first Division 1 game.

The trend of our umpiring numbers growing over the past few years stopped this season which I hope is only temporary. However, accredited umpires were still appointed to more games this season than last season.

One of the biggest occasions during the season was Payne Sowter attending the Minor League Professional Umpire School. Payne’s attendance at this school had been many years in the planning and was a rewarding experience, not only for Payne but also as he will help to circulate the latest skills he learn with the rest of our association.

Thank you to the umpires who made themselves available throughout the year and their families to allow them do it. Congratulations to the umpires who received awards, achieved game milestones, and were appointed to National Tournaments.

At the start of every baseball season there lies ahead the daunting task of scoring all junior, senior, Division 1 and Bite games. This can only be achieved through the hard work from the one hundred plus volunteer scorers across the grades. Their dedication and commitment is greatly appreciated.

As is the case with many organizations, the responsibility of scoring the elite level games falls on a team of a dozen or so highly experienced and committed scores. This core group ensures that Division 1, Bite and for the first time this year the Super League are scored to a high standard. It is probably not surprising that this core group is also the most active on the committee and during meetings. I thank them all greatly for their support and dedication.

A subset of this group is also responsible for entering the Division 1 games online and making the stats available to the baseball community via the Baseball SA website. I am proud to say that all Division 1 finals were scored live into this system last season. The website administration and Division 1 statistics are done by Steve Eades and me. Steve does a wonderful job in creating content and recovering our website from the incessant hacking we have experienced this season.

New to this season was the Super League. This involved eleven weeks of mid-week games which required experienced scorers to be allocated over a total twenty games. These games were also scored live on a website which was created specifically for this league. The last few rounds of this season ran into the beginning of the Bite season which made for a bigger rostering challenge.

The Bite/SABSA agreed to introduce a video review of scoring discrepancies. This involved the footage being sent to me to be forwarded on to the relevant scoring panel for review. Some of the requested changes were upheld. The Bite travelled to Mt Gambier this year to play New Zealand. SABSA was asked to score these games. I went, a local scorer and Michael Gourlay, from Melbourne completed the team. This was an enjoyable experience.

Level 1 training sessions have been run at several clubs this season with many students achieving their accreditation. Also a concentrated Level 3 program was run. Laura Mosel, Kylie McBain and Karryn Przibilla were successful in obtaining this accreditation which qualifies them to score at national level. Kyle McBain also obtained her IT accreditation which enables her to score the Division 1 games in an IT capacity. In June we will be holding our AGM and a compulsory Division 1 Scorers training session is held during this meeting. Topics are concentrated on errors picked up during the previous season. I would like to thank Tony Catt for providing a room for all of our meetings and training sessions as required.

Special mention should be made of four SA scorers who represented this state in a scoring capacity this year. Enza Henty and Carol Burns were selected to score at the Youth National Championship in January in Blacktown (NSW). Laura Mosel and I were selected to score at the Australian Youth Women’s and Women’s Championships held in Canberra in April.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who has made a contribution this season in all capacities. A big effort has seen another successful year of scoring.

S.A. entered the 2019 National Schoolboys Tournament held in Geelong, Victoria, from the 29th of April to the 4th of May 2018, with a hope to make the top 4 following a similar campaign from the Under 16 and Under 18 State Teams in the recent national tournaments.

Our coaching staff comprised Scott Gladstone (Head Coach), Lachy Eldridge (Assistant Coach) Darren Roberts (Assistant Coach) and David Hilderbrand (Team Manager).

Try-outs were organised in March but were only attended by 6 players. After those 6 players convinced others to get involved, we had enough at the second tryout to form a team. The participants included some of the Under 18 State team, some from the Under 16 State team as well as players from the local and country competitions. Players were tested on arm strength, as well as fielding and batting ability. A 17-man squad was selected which was considered to have some players who are currently and some who will be future SABL regulars.

Intensive trainings were held at West Beach throughout the month of April in order to prepare the team as well as possible. Trainings were well attended, and players participated very well. Players were expected to display elite standards at all times, follow coach’s instructions, and participate with enthusiasm. The trainings were designed to attempt to get the team to gel as unit as well as highlighting individual player’s strengths and working on weaknesses. The coaches’ objective was to have every athlete complete the tournament an improved player, both physically and mentally. Some difficulties were encountered during trainings, including field lighting not available, flooding of home plate, double bookings and the country player’s travel.

The Tournament overall was successful in our objectives despite not achieving the ultimate goal of finishing in the top 4. We received consistent positive feedback about how our players conducted themselves on the field, from umpires, other coaching staff and parents, which ensured that, even though the results weren’t as we would have liked, the that team was instilled with values that would hold them in high regard in their playing future. The team completed the minor round with a win against Queensland and a draw against WA. Our MVPs for the tournament were Seiichiro Suzuki 3 times, Hamish Rees, Ethan Chuck, Dayton Mitchell, Zak Heintze-Unger and Darcy Barry. Seiichiro Suzuki also made the “All Tournament” Australian Team.

Special thanks to Sophie and Paula in the SA School Sport office for all their help. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Baseball SA. Tyrone Hambly and Andrew Scott were instrumental in organising training facilities. Thank you also to Nathan Davison, the CEO of the Adelaide Bite, who greatly assisted in our preparation for the tournament by organising our playing tops.

In summary, the coaching staff was proud of the team’s improvements and feel that each individual player will exit the tournament a better player and has gained valuable experience for their future.

2018 saw the introduction of the Adelaide Bite High Performance Academy, where athletes were offered scholarships and had the opportunity to work under specialists both on and off the field over the winter months. Some of the specialist focus areas included Sport Psychology and Strength and Conditioning, two off field factors that were identified as key areas of improvement.

The on-field instruction focused largely on arm strength, which was identified as an area which required strengthening, and individual position specific work. Coaches for this program included Michael Dunn who worked with outfielders, Andrew Scott and Tyrone Hambly took the infielders, Dave Sims coordinated the pitchers and I worked with the catchers. The throwing program was developed through a combination of different areas and worked on gradually building arm strength and maintenance. The program worked on both increasing intensity and volume of throws over the course of the Academy and saw an average increase of over 4 MPH across the board which was outstanding.

Seeing graduates of this program excelling both here in the ABL and overseas in the professional and college ranks is a constant reminder to the athletes that this program is a legitimate step in the High-Performance pathway.

The Bite Baseball Academy was still facilitated for the younger kids and saw just under 40 participate on Mondays and Wednesdays evenings throughout the winter. As part of this program, we also ran a level 2 coaching accreditation and saw 8 new coaches get certified to coach across South Australia.

We will be constantly evaluating and improving the timing and format of these academies to ensure that they are both as accessible and worthwhile for the kids to best prepare them for the upcoming seasons, no matter what level they play.

As a whole in 2018/19, there were 25 new level 2 coaches injected in the South Australian Baseball community. With a new format of accreditations being processed, I look forward to seeing the numbers of qualified coaches continue to rise whilst the already certified coaches can build on their already strong knowledge base.

It’s been another fantastic season for the SA Women’s Baseball League. The fourth season of the WBL saw the competition become club based and the formation of a 2nd division.We welcomed East Torrens, Northern Districts, Sturt and Woodville Baseball Clubs into the competition with 13 minor rounds before the finals series.

The WBL is continuing its strong growth expanding from 13 teams in 2017/2018, to 18 teams for the 2018/2019 season. This cannot happen without the continued support of SABL clubs and promoting the game for females. Not only do we want to thank the club officials and supporters, but also our umpires and scorers who work tirelessly throughout the season to keep games running smoothly.

With 230 registered women, the talent in both divisions once again improved from the previous season.

This year’s grand finals saw Sturt Baseball Club take on Glenelg Baseball Club in Division 1. Sturt remained undefeated the entire season, winning the GF 5-3. Division 2 was a tight game between Glenelg Baseball Club and Adelaide Angels Baseball Club. A nail-biting finish but the Tigers claimed the win 11-10. Congratulations to all involved.

We saw a fantastic crowd down at West Beach for the Grand Finals and the live streaming on social media reached more than 20,000 people. Congratulations to Alice Prokopec & Ayumi Ikeyama who were joint winners for Division 1 MVP Medal and Sophie Fuchs in Division 2 - An outstanding effort to take home this award.

Women’s Baseball in Australia is on the way up with the proposed ABL Women’s Program set to kick off in the 2019/2020 season. This provides a clear pathway for female players in this sport and something for our young girls to aspire to.

Our U15 girls program is slowly growing in numbers but we have a solid group who will work together over the next 12 months, with a goal to get to the 2020 Youth Girls National Championships. Thank you to Kristen Webb, David Lightbody and John Wade for their time and commitment to this program so far. Also, to Risa Nakashima who worked with the girls during her time in Australia for the Women’s Nationals.

An acknowledgement must go to Lawrie Moore for his continued support of the Women’s Baseball League and the work he does on and off the field.

WOMEN’S BASEBALL LEAGUE


We have only just moved past our one-year anniversary of our license being purchased by the Adelaide Football Club (AFC).

It was a year of change, learnings, new beginnings, introductions, and new systems and processes that have both consolidated and improved our position and standing, in our state, in the country and around the ABL, and as significantly around the globe.

We have made no secret of the fact we want to be considered the most desirable available option for players wanting to get better.

This sounds broad for a reason: it is.

It stems from the grass roots newly acquired youth player, both male and female, through to the player vying for a position on our national league team, to the international visitor who plays and enjoys our city and all it has to offer.

The vision and direction taken by the AFC, through our sole director and CEO Andrew Fagan, to Shane Smallacombe with his drive and motivation to firstly work through and present the required due diligence, and work of our dedicated team of staff to deliver on all of the required functional areas cannot be understated.

It is a team game, and this is a true team effort.

To the Board of Baseball SA and its President Mark Snelgrove, I offer my heartfelt thanks.

No organization functions well without the head of its staff working in tandem with its President/Chair, and the support and inclusive nature in which this was done is a true credit to Mark and one in which I will be forever appreciative.

I feel very comfortable that the ongoing building of our working relationship will only continue to strengthen, and I look forward to working with Sarah on the direction of baseball in this state.

As always, the challenges remain for our sport, and the opportunities it presents are great.

There is excitement around our re-brand, the recruitment of a new list of capable players who buy into the culture we continue to cultivate, more international dealings throughout the US as well as Asia and our great partners at MLB China, and the possibility of a national women’s competition, all of which yet again reinforcing the fact we are lucky to be involved with the best sport in the world.

This year 18 out of the 20 members of the team were new to playing in a National State Tournament and I think it was a surprise to some of the step up from Charter baseball and it showed at times throughout the Tournament. On the flip side though, there will be about 10 who will be eligible for this team in 2020 and will know the expectations to compete with the best athletes around the country in their age group.

The coaching staff had one change with the addition of Andrew Sperling who has been involved with most of the group at different times was a great addition. Dave Sims continued his good work with the pitchers and as always Darren Unger was flawless with all the off-field duties.

Our preparation for the tournament was solid with some games against the Under 18s but with no Goodwill Series this year it took away some game time for everyone to fine tune. The guys were very receptive to instruction and the way we wanted to play throughout the build up and were really locked in the last week before leaving.

We started off the tournament strongly with a win against Country NSW, a tough loss against Vic Blue and another solid win against ACT. From there we were in many of our games but couldn’t put a team away or we fought back only to give up some easy runs. Unfortunately, it came back to our inability to catch the ball and make the basic outs and shorten innings was our downfall all week, which resulted in keeping pitchers on the mound longer than needed and giving up extra runs. Our pitchers did exactly what was asked by throwing strikes and limiting walks and everyone who took the mound should be proud of their efforts. Offensively we swung the bat well and took the walk when it was there and had good at bats throughout games, over all we were good in that area.

Whilst it was disappointing to finish in 8th spot it was a great learning curve for the guys to realise that if you give good teams extra chances to during games then they will make you pay for it.

Some individual performances through the tournament was Darcy Barry and his consistent play in a lot of positions and with the bat, Cooper Davison-Peacock was our leading hitter and Wil Paech’s pitching performance against QLD was great to see him improving each time.

In closing, I would like to thank the guys for their time and efforts through the whole time we were together, they did what was asked and showed great improvement throughout. To the parents for committing their time and energy to support the team both here and in Sydney and to Dave Sims, Andrew Sperling and Darren Unger for their efforts in helping these athletes to better themselves on and off the field.

STATE UNDER 16s


The under 18 state team travelled to Sydney to compete in the Australian Youth Championship as defending champions. This year we boasted a very young team having 14 of the 20 players selected being first year players. Of those 14 first year players, a handful were competing in their first ever National tournament for South Australia, which was an exciting time for SA. As always, when we put it all together and played our best, we were very competitive and hard to beat, however we were not able to put our best on the field often enough.

Our final record does not really reflect the year that we had. We finished with a record of 3-8 which would indicate an unsuccessful tournament, however our first round of 3-4 was good enough to qualify for the playoffs meaning we would play tough competition for the remainder of the tournament. We had several close games and could have very easily ended up playing for the gold medal again but it just wasn’t to be. Instead we played off against a very strong WA team for the bronze medal and although we did everything we could to stay in the game they proved slightly too strong for us and we went down to finish in 4th place. Still, a wonderful effort for such a young team.

Some highlights this year include several young players that reiterate the fact that we have some extremely good players coming through the ranks. Connor McLeod was on his first ever state trip representing SA and he proved to be a massive inclusion. His start against QLD turned out to be his breakthrough moment were he threw a complete game to secure a much-needed win to earn a spot in the playoffs. QLD had a handful of extremely good hitters, but Connor took care of them consistently and lead the team to perhaps the best win of the tournament. Another first-time player was Seiichiro Suzuki who had a couple of hits including a homerun in this game. Suzuki’s presence in our line-up was very strong and gave us great at bats regularly. He is a very good young player, and will no doubt be a leader of next years team.

Our two award winners this year were Carter Powell and Jacob Scott. Jacob won our MVP award and Carter won our coaches award which is like a rising star. These awards were selected by the coaching panel and both were unanimous. Jacob had a terrific tournament hitting lead off for most of the week and playing several positions in the field, even pitching. His consistency and leadership was exactly what our young team needed, even though Jacob is a youngster himself. He will be a huge asset for next years team. Carter was also a first-year player. I had several coaches comment on how he goes about playing the game. He is a very tough kid and always plays the game as hard as he possibly can which is very noticeable. Carter played the role of catching and playing a bit of second base and although he didn’t hit in the top half of the order his bat proved to be very useful in the bottom half. Opposition quickly learned that he wasn’t not an easy out. I look forward to seeing Carter grow over the next twelve months and become a leader for the team next year.

I must also congratulate Blake Farr who was selected into the Under 18 National team to compete in the World Cup Qualifier in Guam. Blake had an excellent tournament and really deserved the chance. Blake is off to Junior College in August where he will attempt to get one step closer to his baseball dreams. We wish him all the best.

Finally, I must once again thank my coaching staff who did an outstanding job. Phil Hirschausen came on board this year with the Under 18s after several years with the Under 16s and did a great job. Phil’s knowledge of the game and ability to relate to the players makes him a very valuable part of the coaching staff. The same can be said returning pitching coach Lachy Eldridge. Lachy’s ability to relate to the pitching staff and get the best out of them is one of the reasons we have had so much success together over the past four years. Our pitchers are always ready to pitch and continually give us everything they have and I put this down to a great pitching coach. I thank both guys once again and hope to coach with them again in the future. Finally, I must thank our team ‘supermum’. Renae Kortekaas took on the EO role and once again went above and beyond to ensure all of the kids needs were met. She is a very organised person and does a great job in this role and we were very lucky to have her onboard again.

I look forward to seeing the improvement this young team can make moving forward.

A big acknowledgement must go to Simone Wearne for coaching last years team in bringing a strong foundation on what was required for the ladies to take their game to the next level.

With strong development of Women’s Baseball this season brought some challenges for this team.

For some ladies to be able to attend the Bite Academy to further develop their game was a big bonus also.

A big thank you must go to Risa Kagawa (Nakashima) from Japan who offered again to come back as an Assistant Coach to focus mainly on our pitching and working with our Under 15’s girls program.

With trials run and a final group of players put together, a strong training program was developed. The ladies bought into the direction we needed to take to obtain the next level of achievement we were after and goal settings. A strong culture and development program for this team was required for us to be successful.

With a slow start to the championship and losing our first three games, things didn’t look to bright!

A positive was scoring 26 runs in the first two games. Qld 11/ SA 10 and WA 21/ SA 16

Then NSW 17 / SA 7. Finally, day three we have a good win against Vic White 7/4.

After the first round we are seeded 6th. The second round showed true character and strength, winning all our games.

Timing is a wonderful thing, a good team spirit, bonded really well and strong team goals - everything we wanted, going into the second round.

In the second round the ladies showed true character and strength. The pitchers where able to work deeper into games and allow the coaches to control the game. Offence was always strong, hitting all the way down the line up. The win against Queensland would have to be the best performance for SA Women’s winning 20 / QLD 6 – 13 hits.

Alice Prokopec pitching all 6 innings with 7 strikeouts. Jenny Dunn 3 hits, Jessica Maslin and Ayumi Ikeyama 2 hits each.

12 runs in the top of the six – Magic. This pitching performance set up our pitching rotation for the double header the next day.

The win against Vic White again was a good pitching outing by Darna Veen 3 innings and Hayley Bonython 3 innings. With offence again accumulating 11 hits. Julie Wadham picking up 3 hits.

STATE WOMEN

A win against Queensland also showed that Maddi Schmidt has showed her pitching skills, going 3 & 1/3 innings. Eryn Shipp closing out, Jessica Maslin and Nicky Bacon both picking up 3 hits each.

Bronze Medal Game – was a strong team game. Carly Moore driving in the first run then Nicky Bacon picking up Carly on a single to the outfield. After scoring the 2 runs we all grew in confidence, Sarah-Jane Jameson 3 scoreless innings and relief pitcher Alice Prokopec throwing 4 innings given up just 1 run with 2 strike outs. Again 11 hits with Nicky Bacon 3 hits, Jess Maslin and Jenny Dunn 2 apiece.

Securing our first medal at Open Women’s Championships.

Sarah-Jane Jameson and Alice Prokopec pitching strongly and defence and offence clicking it was an inspiring game for Women’s Baseball in SA.

As far as the playing list goes it would be hard not to talk about all the players. As a group they know they all contributed at the right time.

A special thanks goes out to Eryn Shipp – NSW Country & Olivia De Gruchy – Canberra for coming on board as friendship players. Nicky Bacon from Darwin – NT has played with us for the last 3 years now and has been a strong contributor to the team.

Special mention to Jessica Maslin for Batting with a 548% average, eight players hit above 300 % average for the Championship.

Carly Moore was recognised for playing in the spirit of the sport on day six.

Ashleigh George, Natasha Strapps and Belinda Stansfield controlled the outfield. Ayumi Ikeyama was outstanding with Jenny Dunn as middle infield. Carly Moore was outstanding catching 53 innings behind the plate and worked well with all the pitchers and controlling the game. Nicky Bacon was ever reliable at first base during the tournament.

The whole team must take a lot of this series, with a lot of self-belief amongst this group of ladies.

Lawrie Moore Manager – SA Women’s Open State Team

For this Charter season, the Marlins coaches went into the State Tournament with the belief we were the best little league team in SA. After a more compact lead up practice wise to the State Titles it became apparent our team was clearly built around pitching and defence. Game 1 for us against the Rays proved to be a quality pitchers duel with the Marlins coming away 2-0 winners on the back of an Aiden Lucas no-hitter. Game 2 against the Seahawks was a little comfortable with the Seahawks holding back their guns till the Sunday morning game. With 2 wins on Saturday we had secured our trip to Lismore for the Australian Championship. The gold medal game Sunday afternoon against the Rays proved to be another good game of little league baseball, after a few lead changes the Marlins scored late and held on for their 1st Gold medal at the State Titles.

The lead up to Lismore saw us utilise a few different venues for practice including West Beach, Seaton High School and Northern Districts. Thanks to all involved at these venues for allowing us to use them. We also managed to secure some sponsors and hold some fundraisers which proved to be very successful. Thank you to all our sponsors and to everyone involved in organising and attending the fundraising events.

The trip to Lismore wasn’t as successful as we hoped unfortunately. We had our eyes set on making the top 8 but after winning our first game against the Southern Mariners we couldn’t pinch another win against Gold Coast or Hills. This left us in the bottom bracket and after another tight loss to Central Firebirds we finished up the tournament with wins over the Rays and Canberra.

Overall, the boys all showed improvement and really gained some knowledge throughout the past 6 months. They were a pleasure to coach and hopefully now have a real thirst for tournament baseball at the highest level in this country.

Thank you to my assistant coaches Stuart Millar, Blake Farr and EO Steve Yeatman you all have done a power of work throughout. Thank you to our scorer Kirra King you are amazing. Once again thank you to all the players and parents you have all been fantastic and I will see you all again in the upcoming season.

The State Little League Championships have been completed and the Rays finished 2nd, losing the final 10-8 to the Adelaide Marlins. The final was intense the whole way through with the lead changing numerous times, a credit to our guys who all played exceptionally well. Congratulations to the Marlins on winning the tournament.

Earlier in the day we had beaten the Adelaide Seahawks convincingly which booked our ticket to the national championships in Lismore which start on the 6th June.

As I write this report we are training hard in preparation for the Nationals, we have 2 returning players from last year and 8 first year players who will be eligible for next year also.

LITTLE LEAGUE RAYS


The Adelaide Seahawks team consisted of 14 players from Goodwood, Southern Districts and Sturt. From these 14 players we had 3 returning from last year’s Seahawks team (Zach Altamura, Hamish Gibbs and Ryder Cook), a whopping 9 players making the step up from Development to Charter (Hamish Cook, Lincoln Bunney, Ashton Hutchings, Seth Mignanelli, Lucas Doyle, Henry Wiese, Tyler Howarth, Cohen Taylor and Braedon O’Flaherty) and 2 newcomers to the Seahawks program (Zac McRoe and Trent Challinor).

All three clubs experienced some sort of finals this year with Southern Districts being crowned Under 13/1 B champions whilst Sturt defeated Seahawks counterparts Goodwood in a thrilling semi final before falling to power house East Torrens in the final. Henry Wiese’s Under 13/2 team also fell to table toppers Glenelg in the final.

In the hope of putting all the finals losses behind us the Adelaide Seahawks jumped straight into training twice a week with internal games every weekend to prepare us for the Charter weekend.

The Adelaide Seahawks took on the Rays and Marlins on Saturday 13th April. Unfortunately we concluded the day 0-2 and gave up double digit runs in both games. We knew that all was required was to win the next game on Sunday vs Rays to book our ticket to Lismore.

Both us and the Rays gave the ball to one our returning players from last years team in hope that their experience would get us through the game. Obviously, only one team will prevail. In a tense and high scoring affair, the Rays came out victorious on the back of a couple of big innings. They did not have it all smooth sailing as the resilient Seahawks put up a mighty battle and scored a few runs to close the gap in the last inning and put a scare in the Rays camp.

The biggest positive from this journey is continually seeing players make the transition from the Development team to the Charter team. Last year we had 6 and this year we had 9. Keep up the commitment to the program as it is an exciting time to be a Seahawk!

LITTLE LEAGUE SEAHAWKS


For the first time in SA our junior leagues were split from two teams to three, and as a result creating the inaugural Junior League Marlins Team. An exciting time for baseball within SA, and our charters. As a result, we saw more players able to secure the chance to represent their charters and compete in the state tournament, along with a couple of new coaches. In their first year, the Adelaide Marlins Junior League were coached by Chris Sims and assisted by Charlie Ashcroft. This was an exciting appointment as it brought two new coaches into the system, both with ample playing experience, and Chris with several years coaching experience with Port Adelaide’s A-grade squad.

The teams state tournament was a new experience for many of the players as several of them had not played on a stage like this before. Although the team did not win a game, they represented the charter extremely well, and showed us all that there are big things to come from the Marlins charter as we continue to build and strengthen our northern region. The highlight of the tournament was, in my eyes, the game against the Junior League Rays. The Rays went on to nationals and eventually took home a bronze medal in the national tournament, however the Marlins pushed them all the way in the state tournament. The score for much of the game was held to just a slim lead in the Ray’s favour as the Marlins proved that they had a lot to offer and can in fact match it with the best.

I must give credit to the coaching staff in Chris Sims, Charlie Ashcroft and Executive Officer Beck McKee for sharing my vision in expanding Junior League into three teams. The first year often proves to be the toughest in moves like this, and I thank these people for getting onboard and leading the Marlins team through the training and tournament. These are exciting times and we look forward to seeing what the Marlins bring to the table in coming years.

JUNIOR LEAGUE MARLINS


Training started in mid to late February at the Henley & Grange baseball clubs’ back diamond. Thank you to H&G for allowing us to conduct our try outs there. We had 28 players turn up with about half of them being first year kids. We conducted 4 try out sessions over 3 weeks and cut the squad down from 28 to 20. After that we trained for another two weeks and finally picked our team of 14 players and 3 reserves.

As the regular seasons finals were coming to an end, we decided not to train while these games were being played so that the coaches and kids could concentrate on the finals. This put us about 2 – 3 weeks behind. Once we started training as the Rays team we ramped up trainings to catch up and get prepared to play the state titles on the 12 - 14 April. We dropped the first game against the Seahawks as they were a more determined side in the end and came from behind to beat us by a run in the last. From there the boys had to step up and find a way to win. We had to then play the Marlins twice to secure the second spot. The boys picked up their game and we ended up beating the Marlins in both games. May the 5th was decided to play the gold medal game against the Seahawks. Both teams were fired up and gave the supporters a great game to watch. We prevailed in the end and won 3 – 0. The score really didn’t reflect the game as it was close all day. Our first target being the State Champions was done!

The National titles were then held at West Beach Diamond Sports complex on May the 26th – 31st. It was a cold, wet and very trying week for everyone. Well done to Scotty, Lawrie and the volunteer ground staff for working hard all week on the grounds. A special mention to the Glenelg Baseball Club for making their club available to play at when West Beach was struggling. So great work Glenelg Baseball Club and their volunteers. Well done to Tyrone Hambly (Tournament Director) for well-run tournament.

We went through the pool rounds winning all our 3 games against Western Comets, Eastern Athletics and Illawarra. We then drew Illawarra again in our first final. It was a very tight and tough game and the boys felt game pressure for the first time. Needing to settle their nerves and frustration, we regrouped and ended up winning the game 3 – 2. The schedule then had us backing up for a double header set of finals game. We drew a hot favourite team in Perth North. We played them in a 7pm game under lights which was a great for our family and friends to come and watch and offer their support. Our bats really didn’t fire with us only picking up 2 hits for the game to their 7. A couple of unearned runs for them and one for us was the result in the end with a close 2 – 1 ball game. Our quest for the gold medal was now over. We ended up playing the Eastern Athletics in the bronze medal game and came out victors 4 – 0. I don’t like singling out any player, but I must in this case due to an outstanding tournament by Archie Lovelock. He played centre field every game and did not make an error. He stole 7 bases when he was on the bases. But it was his hitting that was unbelievable. He had 14 hits for 18 at bats with 9 RBI’s for a batting average of.778 This included 3 walks and 3 hit by pitched balls for his 24 plate appearances, an on base ave.833 This was the best batting average for the tournament and the best I have ever seen at any National tournament. Awesome job Archie.

A bronze medal was a great effort and the boys should be very proud of what they achieved.

A huge thanks to my great coaches. Marty Couzner was a huge wealth of baseball knowledge and always gave a slightly different view of things which he demonstrated well. He always encouraged the players to train the right way, wanting to improve their game. David Chandler was again my pitching coach for the second year in a row. He teaches the art of pitching well and gets along with all the guys very well and I’m sure the pitchers learnt a thing or two. Finally, my Executive Officer Leanne Smith was absolutely brilliant. She fortunately has got the mantle of my best EO ever, and that was a huge task as I have had many extremely good EO’s over my years of coaching. She communicated with the parents every other day informing them about trainings, games, fund raising and anything else that the parents were required to know. She also kept me on my toes more than normal and I found myself in very unfamiliar territory. Thank you again Leanne, Dave and Marty for your wonderful support over the journey. It was a fun time guys! Thank you also to Michael Phillips for being the team scorer and Shane McCullough for being our personal team sports masseuse every day. The boys, Dave and Leanne did enjoy your massages!

JUNIOR LEAGUE RAYS


The 2019 Junior League campaign has been a very successful journey for the Seahawks. Due to the SABL decision to split the competition into 3 charters, the opportunity for Sturt, Southern Districts and Goodwood to join forces at Junior League level to form the Seahawks was great to be a part of. Although it diluted the talent it was a great opportunity for the kids from all three clubs.

We put together a great group of coaching staff and help – Scott Pratt, Mark Paparella, Julian Smith and Tracy Paparella as our EO.

We only had 18 players appear for tryouts and from that group we selected 13. We got into the State series in April and were the underdog but due to the excellent training and preparation we were quietly confident about putting up a good show.

Our first game against the Rays was a classic. Well pitched by both teams and well played – it came down to the wire and a two out hit to left field for the walk off win was a tremendous way to set us up for a tilt at making the Nationals. Fortunately we came out in the afternoon and beat the Marlins for a clean sweep of the day and a guaranteed spot in the Nationals. Great effort.

Training continued at both Southern Districts (many thanks to them) and at West Beach and we were set for Nationals here in Adelaide. Unfortunately we lost one player to family commitments and the squad reduced to 12 but we still thought we had the talent on the park to be competitive.

The week from hell from a weather perspective presented coaches, players and the tournament officials with all sorts of complications but to everyones credit we got all the games played and the week went ahead. The Seahawks finished the pool play in 4th spot overall which was just outstanding. Given where we started this journey this was a real achievement in itself. Unfortunately we lost the quarter final in a tight struggle and ultimately finished the tournament in 8th place.

Many thanks to all involved – this was a great experience for me to be a part of and I am very grateful to Baseball SA and Tyrone for giving me the opportunity to coach this group. I have learnt a lot and have thoroughly enjoyed the week and months of training!

Thanks to all the players – you are all brilliant individuals and I sincerely hope you make sure you take the learnings for the week into other parts of your baseball and life in the future. ‘Don’t water the weeds!!’

JUNIOR LEAGUE SEAHAWKS


This year was the first time I took the helm of the Armada Senior League Charter, alongside Jeremy Papparella , James Henty and Shaun Heeps. To say I was proud of the boys would be an understatement. From the moment I met all of the guys at tryouts until the very end, their commitment to the program was outstanding.

We had very little time to get the guys ready, and moving work out times and venues at the drop of a hat, these guys were ready to go when asked. Thank you also to the parents for making sure they were all on time.

There were some surprise inclusions into this year’s squad, however, whoever we selected showed us, the coaching staff, something during the tryouts.

Originally the schedule had us playing at prime time, which the boys deserved, however due to circumstances outside of everyone’s control all 3 games were played with in a 30 hour period.

Both teams had this to overcome and all players and coaches showed great resilience to finish these games off well.

Whilst the Armada came in as underdogs, game 1 was played at a high intensity for the majority of the game, with both teams throwing the best they had at each other. Peter Paech was a little shakey to start with on the mound, however settled in nicely and gave all he had for 4 innings. Saxon Gibbs and Tailen Hobsen did a great job in relief not giving up a run in the final 3 frames. In the box we didn’t really set the world on fire, only collecting 2 hits during the game by Dayton Mitchell and Liam Westdijke.

Game 2 saw big Dayton Mitchell take the ball, a very intimidating figure on the hill. He started very well, throwing hard and with good control, striking out 4. Dayton was fighting a little battle with himself on the mound coming into the 4th/5th innings, however found something to get him through, leaving the game in the 5th. Our bats came alive in the 3rd and 5th innings, however it wasn’t enough to peg back the 5 runs, Armada went down 5-3 in a well fought battle. Mitchell and Westdijke the best with the bat with 2 hits each. Brodie Heeps hit the ball as well as anyone lining out 3 times in a row.

Game 3 was a great chance to see all the guys on the field, and giving young lefty Ashlin Miller the ball was a good opportunity for him to get a look at what its like to pitch at the higher level. Ashlin started off very well giving up only one hit in the first 2 innings, however a couple of walks and an error saw the Titans get a few on the board in the first 3 innings.

Our bats came alive again in the 3rd and gave us the first lead of the series. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold off the bats and relentless effort the Titans gave for the full 3 games, and eventually went down 7-9 . Some good at bats by Tyson Schunke, Heeps, Hobsen and Parkinson, just not enough with runners on to get us our first win of the weekend.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches of the Titans, they did SA proud at the nationals.

The Senior League charter is here to stay, it’s a great opportunity for all the boys to play for that extra month or so to work on their skills and learn more. I hope they took something out of what I had to give during the 3 months we were together.I know I thoroughly enjoyed my time with these great bunch of young men. Their manners and communication was exceptional, which was honestly one of my highlights of the time I spent with them.

SENIOR LEAGUE ARMADA


With the valued help of my coaching staff, Darren Roberts and Luke Chandler, a Titans Squad of fifteen plus one train on was chosen from 32 willing candidates. Losing two of the original members straight away allowed us to elevate Jude Barker into the final team of 14. The Titans managed a 3-game sweep against the Adelaide Armanda in the April State Titles.

Pitching was dominant in game one with a 6-0 score line. Connor McCleod and Jake Bonner combined for the shut out collecting 13k’s between them. Multiple hits from Carter Powell, Ryan Przibilla and Jude Barker helped us gather 9 hits in total.

Game two we were nearly overrun by the Armada after moving out to a 5-1 lead, the southern charter rallied late scoring 3 in the last 2 innings. We hung on and clinching the title in two games giving us the right to move onto the National Championships. Riley Yeatman threw a complete game of 95 pitches over the 7 innings, only conceding 2 earnt runs. Taking advantage of the timely hitting from Carter Powell, Jude Barker and Eathan Lucas, we scored enough to run out the game with a 5-4 win.

The scheduled game three was a very even contest and a see-sawing affair with the lead changing multiple times. Pitching duties were shared by Braedan Ashworth, Ethan Badcock and Boyd Worden.

In Lismore, the National Titles had been reduced to an eight-team competition, meaning pool play was qualifying for the finals round. In the pool play the Titans played some outstanding baseball, but only managed a 1-2 record before the major rounds.

We went down 2-1 to Manly, beat the Northern Twins 13-6, and lost 4-0 to MacArthur with them scoring some insurance runs late. This set us the task of playing eventual champions the Western Suns in the first final. We gave up early runs on their good hitting and some uncharacteristic errors, eventually losing the contest 9-1.

This year the Titans probably lacked enough experienced players to go deep into the tournament, however the positives being a bunch of players gaining valuable knowledge and belief that they can compete at the higher level.

OH, HOW THOSE SAINTS CAME MARCHING IN

DRUM ROLL PLEASE, and a one, and a two, and a three – “Oh when those Saints, come marching in!”Yes, the Sturt Saints are the 2018/19 division one baseball premiers, after a 28-year drought, disposing of reigning premier Goodwood in two-straight, 10-3 and 5-3.

The scores are a little deceiving, as the first game was locked at 3-3 until the seventh inning, while in the second contest Sturt was dominate at 5-0 until the Indians made a late charge to put a scare in the Saints’ camp.

Game one starters Jackson Brebner-Russ for Sturt and the Indians’ Tyler Thompson were having an interesting tussle, as first Goodwood was leading, then Sturt, before it was all locked up through to the bottom of the seventh frame.

The Indians drew first blood with two runs in the first inning, after Dylan Child had a RBI double and Stefan Welch batted a second tally home with his groundout.

Jordan McArdle then expressed his emotion at having his USA professional baseball contract terminated a week prior – where he missed the Saints’ preliminary final win against Port Adelaide – to blast a long home run to start Sturt’s scoring in the bottom of the second dig.

The next batter after McArdle, Angus Roeger belted a double and scored on Matt Macbeth’s two-out single to tie the game 2-2.

Consecutive hits to McArdle and Roeger, after Terrell Joyce walked in the fifth inning, saw the Saints score the go-ahead run and lead 3-2.

But Goodwood is a team that can never be underestimated, and sure enough the Indians came right back in the top of the sixth with the tying run, after Jeremy Cresswell doubled, went to third base on Child’s hit, and scored on another Welch RBI grounder.

Thompson left the mound for Goodwood after pitching five innings for nine hits and seven K2s, with veteran Darren Fidge coming on in relief.

To open the bottom of the seventh, with the game still 3-3, Sturt loaded the bases on free passes, and looked ready to pounce.

DIVISION ONE GRAND FINAL


Will Wirth delivered the big hit to leftfield to knock in the go-ahead run, and before the dig was over, Macbeth had a RBI on a fielder’s choice and Mitch Lightbody batted another run in on his bunt hit, to see the Saints go 6-3 up.

And if supporters thought the damage had been done, they were mistaken, as Sturt exploded for four runs in the eighth frame to put the result to bed, as McArdle had a RBI double, and after a costly Goodwood error, Lightbody was hit by a loaded-bases pitch, Harry Knuckey had a RBI single and Wilson Lee picked a bases-loaded walk.

Brebner-Russ pitched eight innings for nine hits and two K2s for the win, while Josh Tindall finished the game from the hill.

McArdle batted 1000 for the Saints, collecting three hits and two walks from five plate appearances, while scoring three runs, batting two in, and at third base had two put outs and six assists, in a great response from being cut by the Arizona Diamondbacks organisation.

For the Indians, Cresswell collected three hits and a walk to bat 1000, while Child and Owen Hughes collected two hits each.

With Capps Medallist Lee perfect through the first three innings from the mound in game two, Sturt was able to draw its collective breath and set about planning how to win the series, with two of Goodwood’s biggest bats missing from the line-up.

Brendan Pett, the competition’s leading hitter, and consummate former Aussie player Welch, who wields a big bat and is a steady influence at third base, were the groom and best man at a wedding.

One huge fielding highlight for the Saints in the first inning was when Dylan Ridding ran hard from second base to take a magnificent diving catch in foul territory along the rightfield line.

At the top of the second dig – Sturt batted first in game two – Roeger walked, stole second base and scored on Macbeth’s single for a 1-0 lead, which held up until the fifth frame.

Then the game and premiership-winning push came, in the fifth, as Lightbody hit, Lee tripled and came home on a wild pitch, before Joyce walked and scored on McArdle’s double, for a 4-0 lead.

Still 4-0 up, the Saints added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Ridding singled, with Joyce executing a bunt, which was thrown away by the catcher, allowing Ridding to score.

A collision at first base saw Joyce out cold, and after recovering ended up watching the remainder of the game from the bench.

Goodwood threatened in the bottom of the seventh, when two walks and a muffed fly loaded the bases with two out, with Lee exiting the mound after 6.2 innings of two-hit ball, for seven K2s. Tindall came on in relief and kept the shut-out in play.

Fidge came on to the mound for Goodwood and threw the final four digs, conceding just that one unearned run in the seventh. In his first at bat he had doubled, then in the eighth frame belted a lead-off home run to give the Indians a chance.


Although McArdle hit a two-out triple in the ninth – giving him a cycle for the series, a home run, triple, double and single – Sturt did not add to its score and just needed three more outs for game, set and match, and the premiership.

The first Indians batter grounded out. Then pinch hitter Cameron Langley was hit by a pitch, followed by Fidge’s single – for a three-for-three game – before the second out.

With everyone on their toes waiting for the final out, which would signal the drought-breaking, history-making win, Josh Cakebread smashed a long two-run double to give the Saints something to think about, with dangerous hitter Cresswell at the plate.

A ball followed by a called strike, then mercifully for Sturt, Cresswell could only loft the ball to rightfield for Knuckey to squeeze safely in his glove – after three previous dropped catches in the previous two innings, there were plenty of hearts in supporters’ mouths.

McArdle was a worthy recipient of the grand final MVP award, as he collected five hits over the two games, scored three runs, batted in three and played a sparkling third base.

An interesting statistic over the series was the batting line-up performances for both sides.

Goodwood’s 1-4 starters went 14 at bats for seven hits in game one, and 18 for two in the second contest, while the 5-9 starters only had one hit from 19 at bats, followed by none for 13 – the only unusual break from this trend was Fidge batting 3-3 from the ninth spot after entering game two in the sixth inning.For their part, the Saints 1-4 starting hitters went 19 for five hits, and 17 for five over the two contests, while the 5-9 starters batted 500 in game one, with 10 hits from 20 at bats, and six for 17 in the final game.

It was Sturt’s first grand final appearance since 1997 and first flag since 1991, while in the 21st century Goodwood has featured in 11 of the 20 grand finals for five flags.
