To O u r C u s t o m e r s

Building a model railroad is fast becoming one of America's leacling hobbies. Men (and women) from all walks of life find man8y, many hours of real enjoyment constructing realistic model railroad empires. For six years the Peare organization has specialized in the development and manu- Eacture of tracliage for model railroaders to help them enjoy their hobby more. Under the trade name of "TRACKMASTER," we have engineered and produced tracliage of all types to meet every need.

With hut Eew exceptions, all machinery used-to manufacture TRACKMASTER products has been designed and built in our own factory; and the men who plan and operate this machinery are all ex- perts in their respective fields. Still more important and remarliable however, is the fact that all of these men, designers, engineers and production experts, are model railroad hobbyists as well. A com- bination that guarantees top performance.

Because men in the Peare organization (and their friends) are model railroaders themselves, they have the desire and "linow-how" to produce the very best in quality and design. Although the TRACK- MASTER factory is a model of efficiency, there is nothing formal about the personnel. They are a close- ly-knit, friendly team who enjoy their work and take a great deal of pride in their products. And as they are all hol)byists, model railroading is the chief topic of discussion. The office door is always open to any employee who has a new idea or problem; these are discussed and analyzed hy train-minded experts.

The Peare organization has not only solved the major trackage prohlems of scale model railroad- ers, but they have revolutionized tinplate railroading for the Lionel and American Flyer enthusiast. With TRACKMASTER, your tinplate layout is flexible, track looks realistic and you can bend it to any desired curve. With TRACKMASTER, your trains go where you want them; and you can use either scale or tinplate or a combination of both. No conversion of tinplate rolling stocli is necessary with TRACK- MASTER tracliage.

In Jan. of 19.50 TRACKMASTER acquired the complete Westhrooli line of 0 gauge freight car kits and accessories, famous since 1934 as the Standard of Quality for 0 gauge. These kits and acces- sories have been improved wherever possible so they are still TOPS in 0 gauge. You'll be amazed at the accuracy alld amount of detail now included in all Westbrook Kits-and they're priced to fit your pocketbook !

To round out our line of Freight Cars, we have also absorhed the Train-Craft line of scale Ca- 1)ooses and Worli car kits. Where necessary, these too were redesigned by our experts to make them supreme in the 0 gauge field. They are now a fitting tribute to TRACKMASTER standards.

- - -

In our efforts to serve you more adequately, TRACKMASTER is now also manufacturing and mar- keting a lever action reversing rheostat formerly produced by Essex Modelcrafters. This is another quality product in which you can place full confidence.

~ l l these products are made of the finest materials available and are fully guaranteed by TRACK- MASTER. When your needs are of a special type, don't hesitate to tell us of your problems; we have a special department ready to provide technical assistance and to quote on unusual requirements.

As this catalog goes to press, all items listed are in stock, ready for immediate shipment. Our in- ventories of finished products and raw materials are below normal seasonal levels however due to the Nations Rearmmament program. Prices of raw materials are at an all-time high and with no end in sight; we are strictly at the mercy of our suppliers. All prices posted in this catalog were effective Oc- tober 1, 1951 however we cannot guarantee they will be effective at the time of issue. We make this promise in good faith-as added costs appear, we will do our best to absorb them ourselves with addi- tional labor saving improvements. We will pass on additional costs to you only when we have no other alternative. New items will be advertised only when ready for shipment.

We'd lilie to express our sincere "Thanli You" for your continued interest in TRACKMASTER products and hope they'll afford you many, many pleasant hours of model railroading.

P.S. We are indeed grateful to the staff of Railroad Model Craftsman for their splendid cooperation in the preparation of this catalog. . . R P

An Introduction to TRACKMASTER rruaucts A model railroad system is only as good as i ts trackwork. All future building plans and train operations w i l l depend on a good roadbed wi th smooth operating switchwork. The equipment produced by TRACK- MASTER wi l l surpass the highest standards o f the model railroad industry. For smooth trackwork and trouble-free operation, insist on TRACKMASTER. Every part i n every kit is fu l ly guaranteed! Below are .a number o f terms which you wi l l encounter elsewhere i n this catalog; familiarize yourself with them as -you'll run across these terms many times i n your model railroading career.

i ch X.

the

CROSSING: The intersection o f two tracks, each of wh continues on its own way-more or less like the letter Crossings are named or designated by the angle which two "crossing" tracks make with each other. These are frequently used by the prototype when it is impractical to tunnel under or bridge another line. This permits very interesting operation in model form, and can b used on the smallest of layouts.

*CROSSOVER: A connection between two parallel tracks, some- times incorrectly called a switch-over or switch-back, used to cross from one main line to another. One of the most common of switches, in both model and prototype. RIGHT HAND CROSSOVER-Two right hand switches,

joined to make a crossover. LEFT HAND CROSSOVER-Two le f t hand switches make

the crossover.

SAUGE: (Size o f track) This is the distance between the inside faces of the running rails of track. I n 0 Gauge, this distance is 11/4" for both scale and tinplate; S gauge, scale and tinplate, %"; 00 gauge, 19 mm.; and HO gauge is 16.5 mm. These standards are strictly adhered to in a l l TRACKMASTER products. You wi l l find the "Rolling Track Gauge" an excellent device to maintain these speci- fications on any of your home-built trackage.

DOUBLE TRACKS: I n main line operation, double tracks are usually placed a set distance apart. This is measured from the center of one track to the center of the other, or from the right rai l of one track to the right rai l of the other. I n 0 Gauge, this distance should be 3%"; S gauge, 3"; 00 gauge, 2 1/16" and HO gauge 2". These dimensions are a minimum. (In the prototype, the distance is 13 feet.) S and 0 gauge tinplate track wi l l not allow dimensibns of the prototype.

SCISSORS CROSSOVER: Two le f t and two right hand switches TURNOUT: This is a high-hat name for a switch. The only plus a crossing make up this most fascinating crossover. It is l ike a left and a right hand crossover, superimposed. A advantage is that you won't get this term confused with

SPIKES: The means of holding rai l and track work i n gauge and i n position. Spikes should be placed every inch or so on both sides of a rai l for best operation.

INSIDE THIRD RAIL: Trackmaster makes a complete line of inside-third rai l trackage. You wi l l be able to mate this material with Lionel, or other track very easily. Track- master inside third rai l switches and track are very real- istic because the ties are closely spaced and the curves are what and where you want them. Both curves and switches can be gentle or sharp as you desire.

SWITCH RADII: Switches are sometimes designated by num- t bers such as #4, #6, etc., and this number refers to the '

curve radius of the switch. I n 0 Gauge, a #3 switch has a 36" radius; #4, 48" radius; #6, 72" radius; and #8, 1 0 0 radius. Other Gauges are in proportion. The higher the number, the more gentle the switch. For smoothest and fastest operation, always choose the highest number switch permitted by the space limitations of your layout. Often times a modeler is short of space so TRACKMASTER has designed special switches for such layouts. These are called YARD switches (#3) and, although they only re- quire very small space, they provide a maximum of flexi- bil ity in tight areas. On larger layouts, these YARD switches are usid. in freight and passenger yards on the "Ladder" track. When ordering a switch, please specify either right or left hand.

TRACKMASTER manufacturers i n the following gauges:

0 Gauge for Scale Operation-For modelers using two rai l or outside third rai l pick up. A l l equipment is bui l t from .172" standard rai l with .078" head.

0 Gauge for Tinplate Operation and Semi-Scale--For scale cars using tinplate type trucks or tinplate cars. For running on 1/4" Hi-iron rail; .172" standard 0 gauge rail, manufac- tured tinplate track such as Gargraves or Lionel: Trackmaster switches, crossings and other products wi l l match with any of these.

S Gauge for Scale Operation-For 3/16" scale using scale trucks on scale cars running on .125" scale rai l and ties or our new .125" Fabricated Track.

!xibility of the individual pieces of equipment. I n a tinplate layout, the curved and straight sections track, the switches and crossings, are usually bu i l t to one set pattern. The trackage is not flexible and erefore limits the design of your model railroad.

This is al l changed, however, i f you use TRACKMASTER products with your tinplate equipment. ith TRACKMASTER materials, you can bend the track to any desired pattern and you'll f ind a switch

It is NOT necessary to convert plate cars or locomotives in any way to run on TRACKMASTER products. You'll f ind your tinplate uipment will run smoothly over a l l switches and crossings. Try them yourself and be convinced!

TRACKMASTER bridges the gap between tinplate railroads and scale; they will permit you to make y desired layout pattern. Here are a vc track materials designed to give your tinplate railroad mplete flexibility and realism.

7 d m m Crossings can be used on most every model railroad to good advantage. They pro- vide realistic, fascinating operation; train movements that wil l create new interest i n your model pike. Crossings are often used on prototype railroads where it is necessary to cross another main line a t grade. And so too i n model form, crossings will enable you to devise many intricate track patterns.

TRACKMASTER crossings are made of solid brass rai l and are an exact replica of the prototype. The units are completely assembled, ready to install, and they are sectionalized for ease i n wiring. Rail base against rai l base construction to eliminate

I ROLLING TRACK GAUGE 1 This Rolling Track Gauge is one of the handiest devices ever designed for model railroad use. As the name implies, it ten-

ters and spaces rail on ties automatically and permits you to swing any desired radius curve with ease. No need to say this is one of the most popular items in the entire TRACKMASTER line. This device eliminates measuring and scribing of lines; it takes the guess work out of track laying and enables you to lay your track in any desired pattern. Even where rail i s al- ready held in gauge, as in assembled or partially assembled track, by anchoring the string at the center of the curve, you can secure a uniform radius throughout. This is of especial help when your curve is not already determined by your road- bed. This gauge is designed to make track laying a pleasant task and to assure vou trackwork in positive qauqe with

Scale or Tinplate

The trainmen's car, attached to the end of every freight train, attracts more attention than any other piece of rolling equipment. Yes, a caboose is the most essential, colorful part of every freight consist. Real cabooses are made in a variety of shapes and sizes; twelve of the most interesting types are offered here, all accurate 0 gauge scale models of real cabooses. On these pages you'll find a caboose for every purpose to help personalize your home road.

Kits are designed for easy, positive construction with excep- tionally realistic detail. A l l parts have been carefully engi- neered to assure you accurate detail and trouble-free build- ing enjoyment. As i n the various prototypes, the basic body material is well-seasoned wood, precision cut to exact size, and with a l l window and door openings provided. Sides and ends are fully scribed to represent tongue and groove siding, just l ike on the real cabooses. Each k i t includes door and window castings, pre-formed grab irons, railings and hand-

holds. Roof walks, end platforms, steps, underbody details and other accessories are provided to make each model com- pletely, except trucks and couplers which can be purchased separately. The design of these ki ts permits interior detailing as the roofs can be easily removed leaving sturdy side-wall and end construction. These caboose kits are the finest offered i n any gauge and although they are accurately scaled models, they can be used with tinplate equipment by substituting tinplate trucks.

You'll be proud to own and operate any of these cars and remember that each kit is fully guaranteed by Bob Peare. Most of the cabooses shown here are used by real railroads from coast to coast although space will not permit us to print all road names. Cars can be painted and lettered to your own road choice; the complete building instructions with each kit list several prototype color charts to aid you in this work.

Outside, Wood-Braced cabooses have an intricate appearance but are a cinch to build. This grand old-timer (opposite) is not too ancient for even today's modern diesel. The Katy, Rock Island, M.P. and Western Pacific are partial to this design, and it's our favorite too.

............ K i t No. 504 $5.45 Another old-timer st i l l used on the T&P, C.B.&Q., R. I., ATSF, and M.P.; a really unique design. Resembles a box car with three windows and a door per side with a cupola similar to that a t left. Complete with roof walk, smoke stack and hand- holds. Unquestionably different, elaborately de- tailed.

The East and Central states prefer another style with two windows per side and a cupola centered between the roof ends. Elaborate ladder and roof detail. A familiar sight on the CNJ, C&O, GTW, NKP, N&W, PRR and the O&W.

This coast-to-koast favorite (opposite) needs no introduction. A familiar tail-ender on the ATSF, NYC, WP, UP, Frisco, D & RGW, CNW, Monon, CB & Q, Rutland, GTW, CNR, MEC AC&Y, Milw., M & Stl.

K i t No. 510 ............ $5.45

K i t No. 509 ............ $5.45

K i t No. 511 ............ $5.45 For high-speed express and mail train service, try this NYC "Riders Car". This sleek 44 scale foot beauty wi l l put new emphasis on your train opera- tions. Painted passenger car green, lettered i n yellow. Four wheel passenger trucks used.

ROBBERS Short on size but long i n years of senice, these bobbers are st i l l used for on occasional non-revenue run. Tucked away on a shaded spur track, the four wheeler responds creakily but willingly to the switchers tug as it is hauled away to be coupled onto the waiting train. Marker lights are clipped into position and the four wheeler joyously rides the rails once again as it did in the days when its crew sported handle-bar moustaches and wore high-top button shoes! This abbreviated cabin car stil l retains a very business-like appearance. Of B80, LNE and Cumberland & Penna. origin. No cupola, but with two windows per side and the ever-present tool box.

Real railroads don't cal l out the.Marines when they have a wreck along the main line, they just dispatch the "Big hook8' and a gang of workers to the scene of the accident. The men live r ight on the spot, in work cars, unt i l the job is completed. And these work cars supply them with their every need; food, shelter and a l l manner of equipment. Whether it's an accident or a new bridge to construct, right of way maintenance or the addition of a new siding, you'll f ind several work cars in the imme- diate area.

Here are four styles of 0 gauge work cars that wi l l lend new interest to your model pike. I n materials, they are similar to tho cabooses described opposite; each car is fully detailed, accurately designed and easy to assemble. A string of these cars wi l l give that bare siding a genuine "down-to-earth" appearance. The finest work-cars ever offered to model builders, regardless of gauge. Doors in both ends and sides enable crew members to walk from car to car.

A Boom Tender Car, companion to the "Big Hook," and also used as a truck repair car. A l l manner of material can be stored on the open floor or a small derrick can be added to load adjoining f la t cars or gondolas. A n exceptionally interesting model.

................. K i t No. 402 $4.75 A carpenter shop on wheels also ideal for a Kitchen, Commissary or Tool & Supply car. Has a door centered on each side, two windows on one end only. Complete with roof walk and smoke jacks.

................. K i t No. 401 $4.75 Here's a four window job providing lots of l ight. and venfilation for use as a Diner, Recreation Car, Fore- man's or Timekeeper's office. Could also be used as a private car for the Super or Wreck Master.

K i t No. 404 ................. $4.75 Similar to car described above, .but with two windows per side, this car is generally used for small stores or for tools. Many roads use this design for a bunk car.
