BodhGaya and its Importance in Buddhism
BodhGaya is a religious site which is located in the District of Gaya, in the
state of Bihar, and is located at the distance of around 112 kms from the
Capital of the State, Patna. The actual site of BodhGaya is located at the
distance of 14 kms from the City of Gaya.
Religious Aspects of BodhGaya
The BodhGaya is a religious place and is more famously known for the religious connections
with Buddhism. The Site of BodhGaya is associated with world pilgrimage and people from all
countries can be seen visiting this remote place, mainly to know about the culture and life of
Gautama Buddha. BodhGaya is being considered as the most holy place on the earth by all the
Buddhists.
The Places of Visit in BodhGaya
BodhGaya, which has been the centre of attraction for the tourists all around the world along
with the believers in the Buddhist religion, has numerous important and sacred places. There
are several places at the site, among which the prime ones are as follows:
1.) MahaBodhi Temple: The MahaBodhi Temple is considered as one of the most
auspicious sites in the whole world among the Buddhist Believers. The MahaBodhi
Temple is believed to have been built by the Emperor Ashoka, while its renovation
works were carried out later by the Buddhist Monks from Burma. More recently too, the
renovation works were being carried out. The MahaBodhi Temple features a large image
of the Buddha.

2.) Bodhi Tree: The Bodhi Tree, which is in fact the Peepal tree under which Gautama
Buddha attained enlightenment is another one of the most Sacred Places in the World.
It is being said that Buddha sat under this tree for 49 days before attaining
enlightenment.

3.) Bodhi Sarovar: The Pond, which Gautama Buddha was used just before going on
Meditation. It is being believed that Gautama Buddha took bath in the Pond, which was
later renamed as Bodhi Sarovar.

4.) Vajrasana: It is the place which is supposed to be the seat where Buddha sat during the
meditation of 49 days under the Bodhi Tree.

5.) Chankramana: The sacred spot of Buddha’s meditative foot Travel during the 3rd week
after the enlightenment. It is believed that where ever Buddha put his feet, lotus rose
from those spots.
