Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria and died April 30,

1945 in Berlin ,Germany when he committed suicide. He was the son of Alois Hitler who Adolf

disliked and died in 1903 and Klara Hitler who died of breast cancer in 1907. He was called Adi

when he was younger. When he younger he also dreamed of being an artist and in 1907 he

applied for the Vienna Academy of Art but did not get in. One year later he tried again and failed

again.

Adolf continued to live in Vienna for the next four years until he moved to Munich,

Germany to avoid military service in the Austrian army but as soon as World War I started he

served in the Bavarian-German army. He soon proved him self a brave soldier and earned the

Iron Cross second and then first class. On October 13, 1918 he was gassed and had to go to the

hospital because he was temporarily blind and while he was in the hospital he heard of

Germany¶s defeat in the war. Like many other people this caused Hitler to feel betrayed by the

German government for the sudden surrender.

This is when Adolf got into politics. He joined the German Workers¶ Party which was

later renamed the National-sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (Nazi). Adolf was soon the

leader of this party and tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic but failed and was sent to the

Landsberg Prison for five years but only served nine months. During these nine months Adolf

wrote a book about his feelings about Germany called Mein Kampf (My Struggle). This book

was a best seller in Germany and soon Hitler had enough support from people to run for

president of Germany. He lost to Paul von Hindenburg but Hindenburg appointed Hitler as

chancellor. After a year and a half Hindenburg died putting Hitler with the power of president

and chancellor. This gave Hitler great power and was called Der Führer which means ³the

Leader.´

Once in power, he created an absolute dictatorship. ³Members of the Weimar government

who had signed the Versailles Treaty were hunted down and murdered.´ (DiBacco, Mason, Appy

399). Schools were put under the government¶s power and only taught things that would create

good Nazis. Hitler also started the widespread of anti-Semitism because he blamed Communists

and Jews for all of Germany¶s problems. The government took Jews citizenship and jobs and

they were attacked brutally. Eventually this turned into shipping Jews off to concentration camps

where they were murdered and this catastrophe was called the Holocaust. ³Hitler is considered

one of the most evil people in history because of the Holocaust.´ (A Biography of Nazi Leader

Hitler started World War II with the invasion into Poland. He was a talented military

leader. ³He showed astonishing skill in judging the mood of the democratic leaders and

exploiting their weaknesses-in spite of the fact that he had scarcely set foot outside Austria and

Germany and spoke no foreign language.´ (Biography 4). He created an alliance with Italy and

Japan called the Axis powers. This made the Axis powers very powerful and at the beginning of

the war they seemed unstoppable. After six years of World War II the Allies defeated the Axis

powers and won the war. This was the defeat of Germany and the end of Hitler¶s reign of power

and his life as well.

Adolf Hitler managed to make a huge impact on history in a short period of time. Sadly it

was not a good one. He was a very powerful leader but not a good one. Many people believe that

Hitler had mental problems because he seemed so evil. He was responsible for the deaths of

eleven million people during the Holocaust and even more from the deaths of soldiers that died

during World War II sense he started World War II. For these things he will forever go down in

history.
