Body tissue

Tissues
• 4 main types• Epithelium• Connective• Nervous• muscle
• Simple squamous• Cuboidal• Columnar• compound
![Page 3: Body Tissue Epithelium and Blood](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062520/5695d0701a28ab9b029271ee/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
• Simple squamous
• Cuboidal
• Columnar• Some have cilia to move
secretions along• Found in vilii in small intes
tine and trachea and bronchii
Compoundsimple
• For diffusion• Alveoli-capillaries• Lines ducts & tubes so
materials pass through• found in organs with glands• e.g. thyroid
• Often known as mucous membrane –layers of cells with basement membrane
• Lining of mouth, tongue

Compound keratinized Epithelium• simple compound
epithelium • + top layer of flattened
dead cells = • epidermis. • As the old cells rise to the
top they become filled with the protein
• keratin .• Protection from germs
and water• Found in • skin
![Page 5: Body Tissue Epithelium and Blood](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062520/5695d0701a28ab9b029271ee/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Connective tissue• Most widely
distributed in body.• includes • fibrous tissues• fat• cartilage• bone• bone marrow• blood.
![Page 6: Body Tissue Epithelium and Blood](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062520/5695d0701a28ab9b029271ee/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Connective tissue• As the name implies, connective tissues often:• binds/sticks other organs together• holds organs in place• cushions them• and fills space.
![Page 7: Body Tissue Epithelium and Blood](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062520/5695d0701a28ab9b029271ee/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Connective tissues• Blood• Adipose• Areolar• Cartilage• bone

Extracellular material• Material found outside
the cell that is not made up of other cells
• This is known as the matrix.
![Page 9: Body Tissue Epithelium and Blood](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062520/5695d0701a28ab9b029271ee/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Connective tissue
• Matrix occupies more space than the cells The cells are quite far apart
• Except in fat as the cells are in close contact and have large non living lipid (fat) droplets.
• The fat droplets have more non living than living tissue

Blood
• Blood is a connective tissue and each different type of blood cell and the matrix has a different function
• 1. What is the name given to the matrix?

Components of blood
plasma 55%White blood cells + platelets 1%
Red blood cells 44%
The average adult has ? Litres of blood?
5-6 litres

Now visit some of the websites with animations about the blood
• Some of the links on the moodle can be viewed in college.
