Purpose of the Project
oTo correct deficiencies in the bridgeoSeismic PerformanceoPier ScouroBridge Geometry
Seismic Performance
oRequired performance:o No collapseo 5% probability of
exceedance in 50 yearsoAnalysis of the Monte Rio
bridge found that it does not meet this criteria
Pier Scour
oThe bridge is supported by piers, which is supported by the soil underneath
oFlow from the water washes the soil away from the piers.
oBridge strength, including seismic performance, is reduced by the loss of soil
Funding Source
o The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Caltrans prioritize the repair and replacement of seismically deficient and scour critical bridges
o This project funded largely by FHWA with some state and local matching funds.
o Requirements for Funding:o Correct all deficiencieso Comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)
