Guatemala continues winning streak

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, August 11, 2013.- Guatemala beat Belize 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) to continue winning streak at the 10th Boys’ U 19 Central American Championship. Highly motivated to maintain their perfect record, Guatemala got an easy start with the first set and was able to give bench players a chance to play. Clearly Guatemala was superior as Belize had a big difference in unforced errors (40-22).

For Guatemala, the best scorer was Erik Flores with 13 points and for Belize, Daril Avila scored 7 points. “We were committed to win fast and not letting Belize catch up; we still have to concentrate better. I was pleased to see all my teammates play today” said Carlos Lopez, captain of Guatemala. Mahung Alwyn was discontent with his own performance “I didn’t have a good match, I really expected more from us. I congratulate Guatemala for their winning streak”. Alvinizi Pelaez, Guatemala’s coach praised Belize players “their complexion is all what a coach wishes for, I hope they continue practicing as they have a promising future; as for Guatemala, all my players need to be in shape and Belize gave us a chance to make variations in our line up”. Coach Evir Aranda of Belize accepted their deficiencies saying “my guys had nothing to lose against, in my opinion, the team in the tournament, but they did poorly. Emotions got in the way and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, 11 de agosto de 2013.- Guatemala venció a Belize Guatemala 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) para continuar con su buena racha de triunfos en el X Campeonato Centroamericano Sub 19 Masculino. Costa Rica defeats Nicaragua with consistent blocking

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, August 11 2013.- Costa Rica blocked Nicaragua by 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20) on Sunday at the 10th Boys’ Central American Championship taking place at El Salvador. Costa Rica knew how to shut down Nicaragua’s offensive plays by blocking them all the way in a close victory. A narrow margin was visible in the 2nd and 3rd sets, but the winners sealed the deal with superiority in blocks (5-2) and in service aces (4-3).

Costa Rica improves to 3-1 while Nicaragua drops to 1-3 their win-loss record. Job Araya topped the Costa Rica scorers with 11 points, including 3 aces. For Nicaragua, Roberto Espinosa and Juan Reyes were in charge of the offense with 17 and 13 points respectively. “We definitely did better in the first set, things got complicated when our receiving failed and Nicaragua started to block us better, but our coach has taught us to trust ourselves and closed with the victory” said Luis Gutierrez, captain of Costa Rica. Juan Reyes, outside hitter of Nicaragua, expressed “as a team we have ups and downs, we got desperate with Costa Rica’s blocking and we couldn’t stop them.” Coach Mauricio Prado of Costa Rica said “I believe Nicaragua played too anxious, our service complicated their receiving and hence their setter; we got in trouble when they improved this skill. We knew they play by zone 4, so we prepared to block them there which turned out well. There’s yet tomorrow’s match and we’ll face it with the same responsibility”. Nicaragua’s coach, Osman Hernandez affirmed that their opponents’ blocking was very efficient, “Costa Rica knew how to shut Espinosa down and complicate our setter, who I believe failed in making variations during the match. Our strategy broke down”.

Costa Rica supo detener la ofensiva de Nicaragua bloqueándolos hasta el final en un triunfo cerrado. Fue visible poca diferencia en el marcador del 2º y 3º set, pero los ganadores sellaron el triunfo con superioridad en bloqueo (5-2) y puntos de servicio (4-3).

Honduras improves 3-1 beating El Salvador

Captain Rodrigo Sandoval of El Salvador also impressed with 24 points, including 4 service aces; Josean Aguilar contributed with 10 points and Gustavo Alvarado with 9. Mark Bodden was in charge of the speaking for the winners saying “we never stopped fighting, Honduras hasn’t won a medal in this category since 2005 and we’re determined to take one home”. “Honduras was hard to dominate and we didn’t do enough; they took advantage blocking us even if in the third set the failed to do so. This is a difficult defeat for us” said Rodrigo Sandoval. Coach Carlos Funez of Honduras expressed “the fans were very tough on us but we have a saying back home: to God glory and to Honduras victory; and that inspired us today. During practice we worked on our blocking and it worked perfectly during the match”. For Coach Ricardo Rivera of El Salvador, this is the result of inexperience and not following instructions, “Bodden of Honduras was attacking diagonally and my boys failed defending him.”
