Krytox ® Oils and Greases Product Overview

Selection of the best lubricant involves analyzingyour operating conditions and choosing from themany synthetic and petroleum based products. Mostpetroleum products begin to degrade before 99 ° C(210 ° F) and cease turning at temperatures justbelow –18 ° C (0 ° F). Krytox ® synthetic lubricantshave operating ranges from <–70 to 316 ° C(<–94 to 600 ° F).

Krytox ® oils and greases are the products of choicefor applications where complete nonflammability, oxygen compatibility, and resistance to aggressivechemicals are requirements. These syntheticlubricants provide superior performance andextended life as lubricants, sealants, and dielectrics.

Cost-EffectivenessAs Table 1 demonstrates, Krytox ® lubricants arecost-effective across a wide range of applications, because of their long, useful life relative to tradi-tional hydrocarbons.

ApplicationsShould I use an oil or a grease? The functions of lubricants in antifriction bearingsare to provide a film of lubricant between rollingelements, races, and separators and to reduce

friction, heat, and wear. They also provide protec-tion against corrosion and remove heat. Sealedgreased bearings keep dirt out, and oil lubricatedsystems flush dirt out of the bearing as the oilpasses through.

Oils and greases are used over a wide range of speeds and operating temperatures. Selection fora given application is determined by evaluatingthe bearing housing arrangement, operatingtemperatures, contamination hazard, bearing

type, and load.Grease is recommended when:

• Simple housings and seals are used that are notdesigned to retain oil or seal out contaminants.

• Protection is required from dirt, dust, water, fumes, or other contaminants.

• Long intervals between relubrication are required.• Lubricant contamination of the product must be

avoided.

Oil is recommended when:

• The operating temperature is consistently high, and oil flow is needed to remove heat.

• Dirt conditions are not excessive, and oil tightreservoirs and seals can be used.

• It is desired to remove debris from the systemusing the oil and filter it out with an exteriorfilter.

Krytox ® oils are available in a variety of viscosities.Depending on the specific grade, service tempera-tures range from <–70–>340 ° C (<–94–>655 ° F).

NLGI Grease ConsistencyGreases are formed by mixing the base oil with athickener to form a grease. Krytox ® greases use aspecial high thickening efficiency, low molecularweight PTFE with very small particle sizes as itsthickener. This is one of the most thermally stablethickeners for high-temperature, long-term greases. The lower thickener content in the grease maxi-mizes the oil for improved grease life.

Greases can be formulated with different viscosityoils to handle different temperatures and loadconditions. High viscosity oils can be used ingreases for high temperatures or heavy loads or lowspeed applications. Low viscosity oils can be usedin greases where low temperature properties areimportant or speeds are higher. Lower amounts of thickener form softer or more fluid-like greases.Higher thickener levels form harder, stiffer greases.

Additives are often added to thegrease to enhance anticor-

rosion protection, raiseload carrying ability, orhelp reduce wear.

Rolling BearingsKrytox ® greases and oils provide a thick lubricatingfilm for bearings. This film reduces metal-to-metalcontact in the bearings, resulting in superior loadcarrying capability.

Before adding Krytox ® to a bearing, the bearingshould be cleaned of all existing greases, oils, orpreservative oils used to protect it during storage. If left in the bearing, these hydrocarbon oils can formcarbon deposits at higher temperatures, which mayaccelerate bearing failure. Chlorinated solventsshould not be used, because they can leave chlorinethat can cause corrosion. If a bearing has previouslybeen packed with another grease, mechanicalagitation or an ultrasonic bath should be used to be

sure of removing all of the grease. After the bearing surfaces are clean, they should belubricated/wiped with Krytox ® and properly storedto prevent corrosion. If they are not going to bepacked with Krytox ® immediately, or if they aregoing to be in storage for an extended period, theycan be dipped in a solution of Krytox ® oil andKrytox ® fluorosurfactant to coat the surface andprotect against rust.

Proper lubrication is achieved by using the correctamount of grease. Too little grease in the bearingscauses premature failure. Too much grease at theinitial fill or during relubrication can cause over-heating of bearings that are running at medium tohigh speed, resulting in bearing failure. The amountof grease put in the bearing depends on the applica-tion and operating speed. For applications such asconveyor rollers and low-speed machinery with DNvalues (inner race ID in mm x rpm) below 50,000,the bearing can be filled to capacity. For medium-speed applications, i.e., DN 50,000–200,000, thebearing can be filled 50–70%. For higher-speed

systems, the fill is typically 30–40%. Someextreme-speed special applications have greasefills of only 10–15% (see Speed Factor fordefinition of DN values). Because Krytox ® isheavier than hydrocarbon lubricants, its higherdensity must be considered when determiningthe fill quantity by weight.

Grease fittings should be changed to a differentstyle, such as button-head or pin type, to ensurethat another type of grease is not accidentally putinto the bearing. A dedicated grease gun thatmatches the fitting should be used.

Bearings that are converted from oil to greaselubrication generally run hotter internally, becausegrease does not remove heat as does circulating oil. This higher temperature gradient causes the bearing

to expand more and can lead to failure if thebearing does not have adequate internal clearance.Depending on the type of equipment and operatingconditions, a bearing with a larger internal clear-ance might be needed. The bearing or equipmentmanufacturer should be consulted before convertingequipment from oil to grease.

Anticorrosion LubricantsAdditives are combined with Krytox ® to enhance itsability to protect metallic surfaces from corrosioncaused by moisture and oxygen.

Antiwear GreasesKrytox ® greases containing antiwear additives haveproperties that give high specific load carryingcapacity and the highest protection against wear.

Soft/Fluid GreasesThese soft or fluid greases have free-flowingcharacteristics. They belong to NLGI penetrationclasses 0–000 and are often used for lubrication of sealed gear drives.

Extreme Pressure (EP) GreasesThese heavy-duty greases are used for high loadingor slow speeds. EP greases have high load carryingcapability and good characteristics under boundaryand mixed friction conditions. Krytox ® is a natu-rally good EP lubricant, but additional high-pressure additives can be included in the grease.

Channeling GreasesSome applications require a grease that is stiff anddoes not fall back easily into the bearing races.Often, these systems run at higher speeds. HarderNLGI Grade 3 Krytox ® greases are recommendedfor these applications.

Chain GreasesDrive chains, such as roller chains, require lubrica-tion. They are often exposed to the atmosphere andrequire a lubricant with anticorrosion properties. The lubricant must also have good adhesion and theability to wet the chain links—characteristicsprovided by Krytox ®. Often, EP additives areincluded to reduce chain wear caused by oscillatingand sliding friction.

High-Temperature GreasesBecause of its thermal stability and nonoxidizingcharacteristics, Krytox ® is a natural high-temperaturelubricant. Krytox ® grease has a drop point of 325 ° C(617 ° F). Dropping point (thickener melting point)test results can be confusing or misinterpreted withPTFE thickened greases. Testing shows that someoil separation occurs at about 210 ° C (410 ° F), andthis has sometimes been reported as the droppingpoint. Krytox ® greases are available with usefultemperature ranges up to 288 ° C (550 ° F) for con-tinuous use. Special thickener formulations havebeen blended to give useful lubrication up to371–399 ° C (700–750 ° F) with spikes at 427 ° C(800 ° F) or higher with more frequent relubrication.

Low-Temperature GreasesKrytox ® grades formulated with low viscosityoils can be used at temperatures as low as–57 ° C (–70 ° F).

Valve LubricantsKrytox ® is used in all types of valves to lubricatemoving parts, seal connections, and packing and toprotect surfaces from corrosion and degradation.Krytox ® lubricates the valve packing and allows itto expand and contract without binding, reducingleakage around the stem. Valves operate moresmoothly because Krytox ® eliminates sticking and

jumping. It is used on safety relief valves to preventsticking and overpressurization.

O-Ring/Plastic/RubberLubricantsKrytox ® lubricants for seals andgaskets material do not causecracking or swelling and arecompatible with all plasticand synthetic rubbermaterial.

Mechanical Seal Barrier FluidsMechanical seals are used in many aggressivechemical reactions. Conventional barrier fluids canviolently react with some chemicals. Krytox ® can

be used as a seal barrier fluid in reactive chemicalsystems, without fear of reaction occurring betweenthe chemicals and the barrier fluid. Chlorination, fluorination, bromination, nitration, and otheraggressive reactions can safely be sealed inside thereaction vessel.

High-Vacuum GreasesA special low vapor pressure Krytox ® oil is used toformulate a grease for high-vacuum applications. It is also useful for sealing laboratory glasswareconnections and as a thread lubricant/sealant.

Vacuum Pump FluidsKrytox ® vacuum pump fluids are used in applica-tions where conventional vacuum pump oils cause

safety, waste disposal, and maintenanceproblems. They are nonflammable and reducethe chance of fire in pumps. They arenonreactive and safe to use in oxygen systems. They can replace any competitive PFPE fluid aswell as any other type of vacuum fluid. Krytox ®

fluids do not contain acetal groups, which aresusceptible to attack by Lewis acids. This givesKrytox ® superior stability as a vacuum pumpfluid. Krytox ® vacuum fluids are precisely distilled

to provide low vapor pressures and give superiorperformance. In addition, Krytox ® fluids arerecyclable.

Food Grade LubricantsKrytox ® greases have a USDA H-2 rating whenused in food processing plants.

Nuclear Industry GreasesMany parts of a nuclear power plant are exposed to

high heat and humidity or are difficult to access forregreasing. The use of Krytox ® with its longer lifeand high-temperature capabilities allows these partsto run without relubrication for the full fuel cycle.Tests have shown that Krytox ® can be used inradiation up to 10 7 rads with no breakdown.

Grease Mechanical StabilityKrytox ® greases have excellent mechanical stabilityin bearings. They do not break down under me-chanical stress and lose their ability to hold oil.The greases were mixed in a grease worker for 60,10,000, and 100,000 strokes and tested for changes

in hardness. All greases tested had changes of lessthan 30 points on the NLGI penetration scale andwere within 1/2 grade of their original startingpoint. Roll stability tests were performed accordingto ASTM D1831 for 2 hr with the 4500-lbf refer-ence load. The penetration change was minor andwas within 1/2 grade of the original starting point.

CompositionKrytox ® is a perfluoropolyether (PFPE)—alsocalled perfluoroalkylether (PFAE) or perfluoro-polyalkylether (PFPAE).

Krytox ® fluorinated oils are a series of low molecu-lar weight, fluorine end-capped, homopolymers of hexafluoropropylene epoxide with the followingchemical structure:

F-(CF-CF 2-O) n-CF 2CF 3

|CF 3 where n = 10–60

The polymer chain is completely saturated andcontains only the elements carbon, oxygen, andfluorine; hydrogen is not present. On a weightbasis, a typical Krytox ® oil contains 21.6%carbon, 9.4% oxygen, and 69.0% fluorine.

The Chemical Abstracts Index name forKrytox ® fluorinated oils is oxirane, trifluoro(trifluoromethyl)-, homopolymer, and the CASRegistry Number is 60164-51-4.

Compatibility with Elastomersand PlasticsKrytox ® is compatible with all elastomeric sealmaterials and engineering plastics. The limitingfactor when using Krytox ® with any material is thethermal stability of the elastomer or plastic.

Krytox ® performance lubricants are compatiblewith the following common elastomers andplastics:

FluorosiliconeEthylacrylateMethyl SiliconeViton ® A FluoroelastomerUrethaneHypalon ® Synthetic RubberHytrel ® Polyester ElastomerButyl 325Neoprene WRTNycar 100 (Buna N)EPT, Peroxide CureNordel ® Hydrocarbon RubberDelrin ® AcetalZytel ® NylonVespel ®

Teflon ® FluoropolymerKalrez ® Fluoroelastomer*

* 15–20 vol% swelling at high temperatures when immersed.

Compatibility with MetalsBecause of their low surface tensions, Krytox ®

lubricants easily wet metallic surfaces. Krytox ®

lubricants are chemically inert and therefore haveno adverse effect on metals when the temperature isbelow 288 ° C (550 ° F). Above 288 ° C (550 ° F), manyalloy steels, stainless steels, and other metals suchas aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, nickel alloy, andcobalt alloy can be used with Krytox ®.

Compatibility with OxygenAt elevated temperatures and pressures, perfluoroalkylpolyethers are highly resistant toattack by gaseous and liquid oxygen. As a result,Krytox ® fluorinated oils have become preferredlubricants in the oxygen manufacturing industryand in those industries that use oxygen.

Krytox ® oils do not react with gaseous oxygenunder shock loading or with liquid oxygen (LOX),nitrogen tetroxide, or inhibited red fuming nitricacid in impact tests. LOX impact tests were con-ducted in accordance with Marshall Space FlightCenter MSFC-Spec-106B. Other impact testsconducted at 214 J/cm 2 (200 ft·lb/in 2), according tothe method described in ASTM Bulletin 250, alsoshow no reaction.

Krytox ® lubricants have also been evaluated bythe West German Federal Institute for MaterialsTesting (Bundesanstalt fuer Materialpruefung,BAM) for reactivity with gaseous and liquidoxygen under pressure. Table 7 shows oxygencompatibility of Krytox ® lubricants.

Elastomeric components are unaffected by Krytox ®

performance lubricants.

Radiation StabilityKrytox ® oils are quite stable to radiation whencompared with many materials used as lubricants orpower fluids. In general, irradiation of Krytox ® oilscauses minor depolymerization, with a consequentreduction in viscosity, and formation of volatileproducts but not solids or sludge. In one test, exposure of a Krytox ® sample to an electronbombardment of 10 7 rad at ambient temperaturein air resulted in a viscosity decrease of 8%. Theirradiated sample contained no sludge and wasunchanged in appearance.

Biological PropertiesKrytox ® fluorinated oils are biologically inert andare not metabolized. They are not biodegradableand do not support any type of biological growth.

Stability to Lewis AcidsSome depolymerization of all perfluoropoly-alkylethers occurs at elevated temperatures in thepresence of aluminum trichloride, iron (ferric)or zinc chlorides, and boron trifluoride. These

so-called Lewis acids, primarily seen in semicon-ductor manufacturing environments, have signifi-cantly less effect on Krytox ® than on competitivefluids, due to its molecular structure. Additionaldata are available upon request.

ViscosityViscosity Units Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance toflow when subjected to external forces. Viscosityexpressed in this brochure is kinematic viscosity—

the ratio of dynamic or absolute viscosity todensity—at the same temperatures. Kinematicviscosity is the value usually measured, but is easilyconverted to dynamic viscosity as follows:

centistoke x density = centipoise cSt x g/cc = cP

Because of the high density of Krytox ® fluids, thedynamic viscosity is almost double the kinematic.

Grease Viscosity Typically, greases are compared based on the

viscosity of their base oil. Because greases arethickened, they have a viscosity that is much higherthan the base oil. The grease viscosity is affected bytemperature, hardness grades, and base oil viscos-ity. Values for Krytox ® GPL 205 are about 9000cSt at 25 ° C (77 ° F) and 6000 cSt at 100 ° C (212 ° F).The viscosity varies with shear rate.

Speed FactorThe speed factor (DN) indicates the permissiblespeed range for a grease in a rolling bearing. TheDN value is the inner race ID in mm x rpm. DNvalues of 100,000–400,000 and higher have beenachieved at temperatures of 204–260 ° C (400–500 ° F)in actual field service using Krytox ® greases.

The speed factor is affected by the base oil type, inaddition to viscosity and thickener type, and is ameasure of the lubricant’s internal friction. Thelimiting speed for grease-lubricated rolling bearingsis dependent on the type of bearing, its load, speed, precision, and lubrication system.

Electrical Properties

Krytox®

oils are good insulators. Their typicaldielectric properties are shown in Table 8 .

The electrical properties of additive-free Krytox ®

greases approach those of the oils; however, incorporation of some additives may significantlyalter these values. In fact, the conductivity of thegrease may be increased, if desired, by incorporat-ing a conductive additive, such as powderedcopper metal.

Sintered metal components can be lubricated with Krytox ® .

EnvironmentalUse of Krytox ® can help the environment. Theoriginal properties of the fluids can be restoredthrough regeneration, so it does not need to bedisposed of or incinerated. DuPont has aremanufacturing program that reclaims used fluidand recovers the fluid from used filter elements. This lowers the cost of the fluids and eliminatessafety and environmental disposal problems.

This process removes contamination and renewsthe fluid to new fluid performance. Used in valvepacking, Krytox ® reduces emissions from stems.Using Krytox ® greases and oils eliminates the needfor hydrocarbon lubricants and their potentialenvironmental impact. They last longer, so lesslubricant is needed. Additionally, they are nontoxicand do not release volatile organic compounds tothe atmosphere.
