Access Specification
The Port of Beira is situated on the Pungoe river estuary. It is the second largest port in Mozambique with 12
quays. Beira has always been essentially a transit port, handling the import and export cargoes from Zim-
babwe, Malawi, Zambia and other countries in the region. The entrance of the port is 20 nautical miles from
the open water along the dredged 60,0 m wide Macuti channel which has buoys and lighting, with a minimum
depth below chart datum of 2 m. Anchorage for shallow draft vessels is situated at Franquia near the port
entrance. Pilotage is compulsory. Advanced notice is required 24 hours before arrival of the vessel.
Max. permissible draught on spring tide is 9 m, max. permissible draught on tide is between 6.5 m and 8.5 m,
max. length overall (LOA) permissible is 195 m / Water density : 1.005/ 1.025 (river estuary) / ISPS : Level 1
/ Weather : Prevailing winds SE during March and NE during October to February.
Oil Terminal :
Designed for heavy oils handling only, berth 11 can accommodate tankers up to 20000 DWT, and is fitted with
a pipeline for refined products. Berth 11 was the official tanker berth, but mooring is not always possible at this
berth due to strong tidal currents. The berth has a pipeline system with capacity of 400 tonnes per hour with
the following pipes : 4 x 12” for unloading, 6 x 8” for loading.
Fuel Terminal :
Located at quay 12, the modern fuel terminal, which was inaugurated in 1994 has the capacity to load and
unload tankers of 500 to 2 500 SWT and from 500 to 50 000 DWT. The terminal system consists essentially
of four pipelines for refined products such as diesel, petrol, Jet Avgas and fuel oil. This terminal handles 1
200kl per hour and has an installed capacity of 2,5 million tonnes per year.
Cold storage terminal :
This infrastructure is equipped with cold stores that have a capacity for 1 100 tonnes at temperatures of 1,5
to 4,5 degrees centigrade, and for 490 tonnes at temperatures of -9 to -20 degrees centigrade respectively.
The terminal is equipped with electrical forklifts for handling the cargo.
