VITA DI BERNIE

MASSIMOSALVADORI

The renowned historian Massimo Salvadori tells us a dog’s life, narrated from the animal’s point of view

With a preface by Claudio Magris on the amazing relationshipthat can sparkle between a dog and its master

Face to face with some animal, and especially dogs, we often think: «Ifonly it could speak...» In this book the reader hears Bernie’s voice loudand clear. And that’s clearly a lucky exception, given that when his mas-ters are around Bernie generally refuses to bark. Abandoned at a veryyoung age, the puppy is adopted by a young couple living in town: Mat-teo and Dorina. At the beginning, living with humans is not that easy forBernie... Life, from the point of view of four legs instead of two, is verydifferent: vets and dog-washers torturing you, human nieces teasingyou, and then there are the leash, the muzzle, the outings with thegrandparents and the flights. Now that he is older and wiser, Bernieshares with the reader, in a proud and self-conscious tone, what the spe-cial life of an ordinary dog is like.

«Thanks to this novel, we get to know the real essence of therelationship between a man and his dog».

FICTION

From the book Scheletrina Cicciabomba

«The story of a girl who is too fat and another that is toothin, who in the end discover they are one and the samegirl: Olivia, who is neither too fat nor too thin, does notbear the weight of unfriendly or cruel nicknames, andlearns, together with those close to her, to love whatshe eats (and therefore her body and herself) withoutbeing devoured. It is both wonderful and exhaustingbeing a child. Bodies that are simultaneously fragile andvery strong, that lengthen, grow and change in just afew short months. A constant transformation that soaksup so much energy not just from the body, but also fromthat thing that inhabits it and each one of us calls as besthe or she thinks: soul, spirit, character... But most of all itis difficult being a child among other children, as happensat school, when this body we inhabit and reveals us toothers can become a source of insecurity, unease and suf-fering. For children, kitchens have become a mysteriousand forbidden place to which they have free access onlyto consume a meal decided, thought up, bought and pre-pared by adults, never a place of fun and experimenta-tion. Thus, food becomes lots of different things all rolledinto one, but rarely something that passed through theirhands and their intelligence. It would often take so littleto try to harmonize body and food, as well as that otherthing that each one of us calls as best he or she thinks. Alittle fantasy would be enough, some attention paid tothat food that should nourish us and help us grow uphappy, without becoming an obsession either because itis too much or too little. One approach could be to usestories that make things real and, in this case, edible. Itis up to the parents to find the creativity, the attentionand the time. And Olivia is a good place to start!»

A masterpiece of imagination and beauty.A great classic of Italian illustration.

Imagine a funny wardrobe with a set of colourful and unique clothes. The wardrobe is full of «impossible clothes» to do «impossible things»:there is a pot-hat to play in the kitchen, and a cake-hat to wear at birth-day parties, a soft, bubbly dress of foam, an iron skirt, an invisible dress, some tree-shoes, talking socks, warming knickers and an umbrella full ofholes. Everyday clothes can be, in fact, rather boring and anonymous.Free your imagination with this book and create your own style.

A journey to discover Gianni Rodari’s life, places and stories, with contri-butions, tributes and thoughts by Dario Fo, Cesare Zavattini, BrunoMunari, Umberto Eco, Tullio De Mauro and many others.

«I wish Rodari were still with us. He stressed the importance of under-standing the difference between children and adults, and helped chil-dren to get together to face the many social problems they encountered:we can build a better society if we respect children’s autonomy and theirway of thinking... Reading is a fundamental ingredient of growing up:we can think because we have words, and if you know how to use them, you can give them different meanings. How do you learn? There is nosuch topic at school: reading is the only way. Rodari created a pedago-gical approach despite his narrative is far from pedagogic: here lies hisgreatness». Roberto Denti
