Bolt & Heeks have a distinguished record of working in the education sector. We have developed successful strategies for working in occupied schools so that our projects do not disrupt the teaching day.
We work in all sectors, from infant schools to universities, including schools for pupils who have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Furthermore, all Bolt & Heeks employees have enhanced CRB-clearance, as do our key subcontractors.
a passion for education projects our approach
For over fifty years, Bolt & Heeks has provided a wide range of building services to both the private and public sectors. We take great pride in the quality of our works, our outstanding service to clients and excellent contract management. We fully appreciate that education projects are unique with distinctly different requirements to other projects. Our flexible approach has seen us manage and deliver projects ranging from £1,000 to £2m. On all education contracts, our site manager liaises closely with the school to programme the works around the school’s requirements rather than the school accommodating us. Safety is paramount on all education works which is why, with the school’s consent, our site manager will hold a safety assembly to explain the inherent dangers of buildings sites to pupils. We also appreciate that parents and the immediate community may be interested in the work and how it could impact on them. Where the school thinks it would be helpful, we hold “Meet the Contractor” sessions where the management team are on hand to answer any queries or concerns that may be raised. With both ISO9001 and ISO14001 quality assurance and environmental management accreditations respectively, clients can be assured that they will receive high quality works with minimal environmental impact. We are also an Associate Member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme which reflects the high standards of our sites. Over the following pages, we have highlighted some of our recent projects, both large and small, in the private education sector.
project descriptionBolt & Heeks carried out external repairs and lead roof renewals to the Speech Room, a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1874 and 1877 as a chamber in which to encourage public speaking. As part of the restoration, over 2,500 bespoke, hand-made bricks were used to replace those too damaged to be repaired and masonry and terracotta repairs were undertaken by conservation masons. We renewed the lead roof and rainwater goods as well as repairing a stone roof and a slate roof.

project descriptionThe old kitchen had become too cramped to provide the level of catering expected at this prestigious Grade II listed school. The solution was to build a single-storey extension to house a new commercial kitchen and servery together with a covered walkway to shelter queuing students in inclement weather. The project was phased to allow catering to continue throughout the works.

project descriptionBolt & Heeks have carried out numerous projects, both large and small, for Highgate School over many years. Below we summarise three small contracts we have completed at the school. With a long history dating back to 1565, when it was founded by a Royal Charter of HM Queen Elizabeth I, the school estate has grown considerably and Bolt & Heeks are actively working with the school’s architect to maintain and improve its various properties.

project descriptionChurch & Harsnett Houses are 17th Century Grade II listed properties which, following full restoration, now serve as dormitories for older boarders. Both houses required full strip-out and restoration, including roof repairs/renewal, wet rot treatment and heritage works, including lime plasterwork and cornicing repairs, specialist woodwork and the refurbishment of doors and windows together with minor structural alterations. All works were carried out using materials and methods as close to the original as possible.

project descriptionOver two phases, Bolt & Heeks reconfigured and refurbished the Isis School of English, Greenwich, to provide modern, bright, vibrant facilities for both students and staff. As the school was fully operational throughout the works, and is located in a busy shopping square just off Greenwich High Road, particular attention was paid to the safety of staff, students and the general public.

project descriptionSt Albans School’s pool house, although less than ten years old, had a defective roof which had affected the interior. Bolt & Heeks were engaged to replace the roof and carry out internal remedial works. Within the pool house, we erected a scaffold over the pool to both protect it and act as a working deck. We then removed all the staining arising from water ingress from the roof, making good all the consequent damage.

We have retained the values George Bolt built his little building yard around – high quality works, excellent customer service and investment in the workforce. These values have seen our work in the private education sector nominated for two prestigious awards. Our Harrow School Speech Room project, shown in this brochure, has been shortlisted for a RIBA award in the architectural conservation section and it has also been nominated for a Murdoch Award, courtesy of the Lead Contractors’ Association.
a passion for education projects why choose us?
The standard of workmanship, attention to detail and budgetary control were of the highest quality. Communication with the company, through the project or site manager, was efficient and friendly and we received regular progress reports and budget updates. When plans had to be changed or altered, Bolt & Heeks did their utmost to accommodate our requirements and proved to be competent and knowledgeable. The project finished ahead of schedule and on budget. We now have a wonderful building which is much admired by all who visit. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Bolt & Heeks as a model contractor. St Aubyn’s School would definitely use them again on a future project.Maureen Foakes - Bursar - St Aubyn’s School
As architects and contract administrators for the refurbishment of Tetherdown Primary School, we found Bolt & Heeks to be proactive and helpful at all times. Ian Palin and his team completed the works to a high standard under difficult conditions and maintained a good relationship with both the design team and school throughout.Paul Nicholson - Associate Director - TP Bennett
The company as a whole was very professional and communicated well at all stages of the development. Regular meetings were held at which the contractor produced comprehensive progress reports. The whole project was completed well ahead of schedule and we were very satisfied with the standard of the work. Mr Ian Palin, Director, and Rob Ryan, Site Manager, built up an excellent relationship with the school, were willing to accommodate reasonable requests and responded promptly to smooth out any problems and correct snagging issues. We would have no hesitation in recommending them to you.Sue Blows - Headteacher - Hatton School & Special Needs Centre
The project, including a new drama studio, major kitchen alterations and a brand now reception area and admin offices, has been completed to an extremely high standard. All the builders, electricians and decorators with whom we came into contact were professional, courteous and hard-working. We would have no hesitation in recommending Bolt & Heeks.L K Dyer (Mrs) - Headteacher - Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School
