Pride to forein Parade

I would like to con-gratulate the organisersof this year’s ChristmasParade, allowing such avariety of entrants totake part.

I heard many voicesexpressing interest intoall the various entries.

Having the uniquesteam traction enginenear the lead of the pro-cession (pictured right)was nostalgic for some ofthe older folks, and an

awesome experience forthe children.

This, along with theenormous effort put intothe traditional Christ-mas floats and fatherChristmas, created aspecial event foreveryone’s enjoyment.

Congratulations to allthe participants and thelarge crowds which linedthe streets to enjoy theoccasion.EWAN MACDONALD

Pakeke raffle winnershares Christmas joy

TC211209CT06JOY TO THE WORLD: Joy Russ collects her Christmas Sleigh prize from Pakeke Lions’ raffleorganiser, Ian Grey, while grandchildren Harry Russ (left, 7) and Mac Russ (4) prepare to help withwrapping the presents.

When Te Awamutu residentJoy Russ found out she was thewinner of the Pakeke LionsChristmas Sleigh raffle, shedecided it really would be betterto give than receive.

Mrs Russ is donating most ofthe gifts to needy children, whomight otherwise miss out this

Christmas, via the gift tree at TeAwamutu Warehouse.

Mrs Russ usually gives PakekeLions a $50 donation for her raffletickets — supporting a good causeat Christmas.

She is getting her five grand-children (who will not go withouton Christmas day) to help her

wrap the presents to put under thetree at the Warehouse.

It was a lucky week for theRuss household, with husbandBruce winning a ham in theChristmas raffle at Stewart Alex-ander Golf Club, to go with thecarry bag he won for his golfingexploits.

Former Te Awamutu resident Rachel Vincent(left) is making a name for herself as an artist.

Although she has three children, including twoyear old twins, and cares for another child duringthe day, she still makes time to follow her passionwhich was nurtured at Te Awamutu schools.

Now in Methven, Rachel had her first exhibitionearlier in the year and several of the paintings havefound their way back to the Waikato.

Her paintings are mostly acrylics and include awide range of subject matter - from farmyardanimals and rural scenes to people, beaches andpohutukawa.

She says her influences include rural Waikatowhere she grew up and the countryside around hernew home in Methven.

Mighty medal haulfor special athletesEight metal strikes at Palmerston North

TC211209SP8COACH Shelly Moriarty with her three Special Olympics Te Awamutu swimmers to medal at theNational Summer Games, from left Deshan Walallavita, Dillon Knoetze and Robert Van der Wee.

Special Olympics Te Awamutu,a new club formed just five monthsago, was the big winner at theSpecial Olympics National Sum-mer Games in Palmerston North.

The smallest team at the gamesnot only made nine finals, theyreturned home with three goldmedals, two silver, three bronzeand a fifth.

Ecstatic coach, Shelly Moriartysays the stunning results are atribute to the efforts of the boys.

‘‘Robert (Van der Wee), Dillon(Knoetze) and Deshan (Walallavita)exceeded all my expectations.

‘‘All the learning and trainingfinally kicked into gear and theracing was on. Personal best timeswere smashed by four to 80seconds.’’

Knoetze struck gold twice, aswell as winning a silver medal.

Moriarty says his fastest timeoverall of 14.09 seconds for winningthe 25m freestyle is very credible asa main stream time.

Walallavita, swimming for onlyone year, won gold, silver andbronze, and Van der Wee twobronze and a fifth placing.

Being such a new club meant avery quick scramble to fundraise tooutfit the team of three to represent

Te Awamutu in swimming. The team of Van der Wee (19),

Knoetze (16), Walallavita (14),Shelley Moriarty (coach) andBruce Blair (manager) were allfirst timers at the nationals and alittle nervous at the prospect.

For the boys, it was five daysaway from parents, staying atMassey University, eating, sleep-ing and mixing with athletesranging from nine years (youngest)to 79 (eldest) competing at thegames.

‘‘There were 1100 participatingathletes and one of the mostmemorable moments was the open-ing ceremony,’’ says Moriarty.

‘‘Each team was announced intothe arena and as we entered, peoplearound the arena stood, waved, clapped and cheered. The boyswalked proud, waving with hugesmiles.

‘‘The torch run arrived fromDunedin and once the SpecialOlympic flame had been lit, thearena more than came alive — itrocked.

‘‘It was then declared that theGames had begun, and begun ithad.’’

Moriarty says as each day cameand went, the boys met new people

and overcame challenges.‘‘As their coach, I learnt more

about myself and also that the boysare ready for more challenges fromtheir coach.

‘‘Above all what Special O’teaches everybody is that peoplewith disabilities can achieve anenormous amount, with the sup-port, encouragement and most ofall the belief of people aroundthem.’’

Moriarty says the games openup opportunities for people to par-ticipate and very importantly com-pete in the sport they have chosen.

‘‘For me, two words sum up theSpecial Olympics National Sum-mer Games, ‘heartening and mov-ing’.’’

Results:Robert Van der Wee: 5th 25m

Scouts humbledby generosityof benefactor

In your paper recently it was reported of damagethat was done to the Te Awamutu Scout Hall bypersons who have not been apprehended.

It is with both disbelief and heartfelt thanks thatwe have received an anonymous donation from a ladywho dropped off an envelope to our Group LeaderAlan Patterson with a bank cheque for $600 to coverthe cost of repairs.

As our best efforts to identify this benefactor havebeen in vain, we wish publicly to sincerely thank herfor her extremely generous donation.

We truly appreciate this very kind gesture whichwe would probably have to fundraise for otherwise, especially as we cannot claim insurance on it.

This sort of act really restores one’s faith in humannature, as opposed to the sinking feeling you get whenyou turn up to see your facility vandalised.

The Te Awamutu Scout Association wishes thiswonderful person and all the readers of your paper avery Merry Christmas and many blessings for theyear ahead.

Waipa Women’sRefuge plea forsafe Christmas

Women’s refuge has re-established in Te Awa-mutu under new management from WaitomoWomen’s Refuge.

Their plea is for Christmas to be a time wherefamilies enjoy each other’s company, with lots oflaughter and excitement — not a time of domesticviolence.

‘Can we ask our men, not to hit their wives, theirpartners and children!’

‘Can we ask our mothers’ to watch over theirchildren?’

‘Can we ask families, the community — everyoneto simply take care of each other?’

Statistics show we are not good at doing thesethings.

There has been a 5% increase in services tofamilies this year.

There has certainly been an increase in violence;it has actually doubled in terms of Women’s RefugeServices being accessed.

Although New Zealand is fairly a well-offcountry generally, compared to other countries, wehave a shameful reputation of family violencewhere men are beating their wives and sometimeseven their children.

Some men even think that it is their right to beatand bully their partners and wives — it’s an attitudethat has been around for some time.

We have to continue addressing issues ofviolence from person to person, families, communi-ties, and of course the government.

The Refuge in Te Awamutu will be open insupport of our mothers’ and children who may needaccess to the facility.

The service provides 24 hour crisis phone lines(0800 155799), 24 hour access to emergency accom-modation, home visits, education and supportgroups and information on legal issues, benefits, safety options and housing.

At present the group is seeking assistance fromthe community to become fully operational.

In the first instance donations of furniture, dining suites, lounge suites, sheets, towels etc tohelp provide for families would be greatly appreci-ated.

If you have time and caring on hand, you arewelcome to come share it with the Refuge bybecoming a volunteer.

Camp runs a blinder

TC211209SP11ACE RUN: Katherine Camp (centre) winning the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ 400m final.

Katherine Camp cruised to vic-tory in the senior girls’ 400m finalat the New Zealand SecondarySchools’ track and field champion-ships in Timaru.

Camp won in a personal besttime of 55.89 seconds, becomingthe third fastest woman over thedistance this year in New Zealand, behind World championshiprepresentatives MoniqueWilliams and Rebecca Wardell.

She and coach Neal Webb had asimply plan for the weekend —run to qualify in both the heat andsemi final, times weren’t import-ant. Then, in the final, lead downthe back straight with the tailwind and kick again at the 200mmark to really put the pressure on.

It was a formula that paid hugedividends.

Camp capped and excitingweekend with a bronze medal inthe senior girls’ triple jump with aseason’s best jump of 11.62 metres.

Te Awamutu Colleges athletes

all preformed well at the cham-pionships.

Anton Melville, Lily Hall andAndre Peake all recorded personalbest times to make the 400m finalsin their respective age groups, placing them in the top 16.

Aussiebeau Te Huia had fourtough races on Saturday, justmissing out on semi-finals in boththe junior boys’ 100 and 200metres. He can be proud of hisachievements in his first season ofcompetition.

Ralph Lentge-Smith ran well inboth his 1500m and 3km road race, finishing 30th out of 89 competi-tors in the later event.

Sidney Roberts was equallyimpressive running the same dis-tances in the junior girls’ section, recording 12.31 minutes for the3km.

Tessa Gillett had the misfor-tune to strike the eventual winnerand two rivals who could run low13 seconds in her 100m heat.

Despite producing a personal best, she was not quick enough toprogress further.

The senior girls’ relay teamqualified ninth fastest, missingout on a finals spot.

Phil Simms (Hamilton BHS),who trained with the Te AwamutuCollege team, made the finals ofthe open 300m hurdles, producinga personal best time in finishingsixth. He did not make the finals ofthe 110m hurdles, despite clockinga heat time good enough for fifthplace in the final if he had quali-fied.

Rebecca Foster (TaumarunuiHigh) made the semi-finals of thejunior girls’ 400m.

Webb and fellow coach MurrayGreen were thrilled with theteam’s overall results.

‘‘Producing PB’s, making thenext rounds, and of course win-ning medals is what these cham-pionships are all about,’’ saysGreen.

NZ drivers upstage Aussies

TC211209SP13JENNIFER WEAL on her way to winning the small pony noviceclass at Longwood, Victoria.

TC211209SP13BJOHN McGOUGH with the trophyhe won in Australia.

Four members of the New Zea-land Carriage Driving Societyhave just returned home afterspending two weeks across theTasman as part of an annualexchange programme with theirAustralian counterparts.

Three of the drivers were fromTe Awamutu, John McGough,John Flintoff and Jennifer Weal, along with Alison Cameron fromOtaki.

Last year Australian driversvisited New Zealand.

The exchange consists ofdrivers being hosted by their transTasman counterparts and drivingtheir horses and carriages in com-petitions.

The final event for all thedrivers was a combined drivingtrial, consisting of dressage, mara-thon section and cones competi-tion at Longwood, Victoria.

It is one of the biggest events ofits type in Australia, attracting 50drivers.

Each of the four Kiwi driversfaced differing challenges to getthemselves accustomed to theirborrowed turnouts and YvonneWeal reports that they all acquit-ted themselves admirably.

John McGough won the largepony novice class, the largest classat the event. He and his borrowedmount turned in an outstandingdressage to put himself well clear

of the rest of the field going into theother two phases of the competi-tion. He also won the trophy for theoldest driver at the event.

John Flintoff placed fifth in thesame class with a pony that wasnot as free going as he is used to.

Jennifer Weal won the smallpony novice class and Alison Cam-eron finished second in the smallopen pony class.

Next year will be New Zealand’sturn to host Australian visitorsand no doubt some of them will getto stay in Te Awamutu.

While the competitions are partof the exchange, the main empha-sis is on exchange of ideas andhaving fun.

Zambuck one gutsy rider on two wheels

TC211209SP15JACK OF ALL TRADES: Jan Maree Pool hard at work keeping the bike going.

PHOTOS BY CHRIS POWER - BRM MAGAZINENO BRAKES: Jan Maree Pool using her feet to help her slow down.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu volunteer ambulance officerJan Maree Pool overcame blood, sweat andtears to be first woman and 30th overall out of70 in the gruelling Maramarua three-dayenduro.

The first two days of the inaugural eventwere held in torrential rain, making the claysurface through the Maramarua Forest (SouthAuckland) extremely muddy and slippery.

Conditions were made all the more chal-lenging by tree roots being exposed throughthe clay based forest.

The 18-year-old rider lost the brakes on herKTM 250EXC midway through the second day

and rode without any brakes for the entirethird day.

‘‘I had no alternative but to use the gearsand plant my feet on the ground to slow up onthe steep, downhill sections,’’ says Pool.

‘‘It was scary but I survived.’’Pool finished sporting bruises from head to

foot after literally smashing her way throughthe forest, being hit by stones flicked up byriders in front of her, and the occasionalunscheduled dismount.

The Te Awamutu teenager, who averaged170km a day, says the event is likened to a trailride.

There were four terrain tests a day, witheach rider’s fastest times totalled and the

competitor with the least time declared thewinner.

It is certainly not an event for the faint-hearted.

‘‘If branches or other such obstacles are inyour path, you’ve either got to move it out ofthe way with your legs and arms, or duckunder it.’’

Pool was the only one of four women in thefield to last the distance. The other threefemales were all ‘houred out’ on the first dayfor not reaching a time check in the allowabletime.

The trainee Te Awamutu ambulance officeris enjoying a stellar year on her bike, sponsored by the Pool family, Otorohanga

Tyre Service, Patterson O’Connor Motor-cycles, DR Trim and CD Hire.

She is on course to defend her New Zealandtitle, lying third on general classification afterthree of the five rounds in the 2009-10 GNCC(Grand National Crosscountry) series, havingplaced fourth at Matata, second at Te Puke andthird at Waimiha.

In 2008-09 she won three of the five rounds.Last month Pool won the woman’s trophy in

the Tauranga Crosscountry Series, and fin-ished 10th out of 30 in the 0-200cc class in theNational Crosscountry Championships, ridinga KTM 125cc — a mighty achievement con-sidering she was the only female in the hotlycontested class.

A thought for the festive season!True love is wonderful to behold,It is far more precious than silver

and gold,It is the kind that looks after family

and friends,Not counting the cost - it never

ends,Affection that is only based on lust,In time will fade and turn to dust,But true love is strong - it lasts for

ever,In spite of all life’s storms we

weather,To love someone truly the way that

you ought,It must be the unconditional sort,Anything less is not true love,And is not inspired by Heaven

above,It is God’s love personified we

remember,Born on the 25th of December,That may not be the actual date,But it is good to remember and

One of the rare films that actually lives up to, and is deserving of, its considerable hype. This film revives the honourable tradition

of chills-by-suggestion, whereby what we don’t see is far scarier than what we do. The suspense that’s missing from so many

horror films is there. It’s a genuinely scary film.PARANORMAL ACTIVITY M

Watch out for THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO M. This new Aussie comedy about a Harley-driving classical piano tuner called

Warm hearted and without a mean bone in its filmic body, The Marriage of Figaro is entertainment in a major chord. You will

thoroughly enjoy this little gem. We recommend it.
