NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTSSure, Gronk is gone, but the Patriots still have the best QBand head coach combo in the NFL, as well as a ton of re-turning talent. The Pats have one of the easiest schedules inthe league this year and will be favored in every game, ex-cept when they play at Philly, and even then they will beunder a field goal underdog. Playing in the AFC East almostguarantees six wins and this year they play the NFC East,which means easy wins over Washington and the Giants. Thedefending Super Bowl champs have won 11 or more gamesevery year since 2009 and will do it again in 2019.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTSDespite preseason injury concerns, we expect QB Andrew Luckto be back playing at an elite level and he’ll have plenty of of-fensive weapons. The Colts have the NFL’s best offensive line, agreat play caller in Head Coach Frank Reicht and will be vastly im-proved on defense after adding pass rusher Justin Houston. Hispresence will take pressure off an improving group of lineback-ers and secondary, giving them a more potent pass rush. Indywon 10 games last season and is a better team this season. Theyalso have a more manageable schedule since both the Titans andTexans will be down and Jacksonville could be a dumpster fire.Indianapolis will be favored in at least nine of its 16 games andcould very well go 12-4.

HOUSTON TEXANSThe Texans go from playing one of the easiest schedules in theleague last year (when they went 11-5 with six of those wins byone score or less), to one of the most difficult in 2019. They areslated to be favored in just 8 games and none of them will beby more than 7 points, so even the games they are supposed towin will be toss ups. The biggest weakness last year was the of-fensive line and the Texans front office did nothing to fix it. It’sa shame a talented, young QB like Deshaun Watson will be run-ning for his life all season. He is bound to get hurt again at somepoint. This team will be lucky to win seven games.

BALTIMORE RAVENSQB Lamar Jackson was a nice story last year, but the Chargersshowed the formula to beat him in last year’s playoffs. The teamdrafted WRs Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin but still have theworst WR corps in the NFL. Defense has been Baltimore’s callingcard for years but it lost all-time sacks leader Terrell Suggs, lead-ing tackler CJ Mosley, six-time Pro Bowler Eric Weddle and lastyear's sacks leader ZaDarius Smith. They could start 2-0, but afterWeek 2 the schedule gets tough with games vs. KC, Seattle, Pa-triots and Rams as well as division games with the Steelers andimproved Browns. Ravens go 7-9 this year.

UNDER 8.5(-110)

CHICAGO BEARSUNDER 9(-110) We cashed with the over on the Bears in these pages last year,

but we’re going under in 2019. Everything went right for Chicagoin 2018 until the “double doink” field goal cost them a playoffgame. The Bears’ schedule in 2018 was loaded with cupcakes,with wins vs. the Bills, Jets, 49ers, Cardinals and Buccaneers. Inaddition, normally tough division outs, Green Bay and Detroit,were awful. This season, the Bears schedule is tough, withgames against the Saints, Chargers, Rams, Cowboys and Chiefs,which could all be losses. The Bears will feel the loss of defen-sive coordinator Vic Fangio and will be .500 team at best.

2. Chris Ash - RutgersThe Big Ten is a tough confer-ence but under Ash Rutgers haslooked like it barely belongs in theFBS. Scarlet Knights were 0-9 inthe Big 10 last year and 1-11overall. They have just 5 FBS winsin Ash’s 3 years as head coach.His multimillion dollar buyout was the only thing keeping the schoolfrom firing him after last year.

3. Gus Malzahn - AuburnMalzahn guided the Tigers to aBCS Championship berth and wonthe SEC West in 2017, but he hasnot met the lofty expectations ofAuburn boosters since. He is 2-6

in bowl games and was 3-5 in theSEC last year. Another losing SECrecord and Gus is gone.

4. Clay Helton - Southern CalUSC is supposed to be in thehunt for the National Champi-onship every year, but under Hel-ton they have got worse eachyear. Trojans had first losing sea-son in 18 years in 2018! USC hasto at least win the Pac-12 Southtitle this year, or Helton will haveto face the music.

5. Lovie Smith - IllinoisI ask the same question everyyear: Why was he hired in thefirst place? Lovie hadn’t coachedcollege football in 20 years whenhe got the Illini job three seasonsago and has won only four Big 10games since that time. Fire him!

Texas is expecting a big year, butit will depend on whether the offen-sive line can gell quickly. The Long-horns lost over 110 games ofstarting experience on the line andif returning QB Sam Ehlinger andRB Keaontay Ingram are going tohave big years, they need protec-tion and holes to run through.

QB Felipe Franks has been in-consistent at Florida, but was solidin 2018 throwing for 24 TDs withjust six INTs. His decision makingand accuracy must improve for theGators to have a chance to unseatGeorgia in the SEC East.

Texas A&M had a great ending tolast season, winning its last threeSEC games and a bowl game. Manypundits have the Aggies as a dou-ble digit win team, but not us. Ag-

gies lost almost everyone on de-fense, including the top 5 tacklers.A&M offense will put up good num-bers, but will have to cover for a de-fense that gave up 25 points pergame last year and will allow sub-stantially more this year.

What a job Mike Leach hasdone at Washington State, taking aprogram that had become irrelevantand turning it into a Pac-12 con-tender that has gone 37-15 the lastfour years. “The Pirate” finds a QBevery year that other teams haveoverlooked and last year’s QBGardner Minshew was a perfectexample. He was a relatively un-known grad transfer from East Car-olina that Leach transformed intothe Pac-12’s All Time single seasonpassing leader and Johnny UnitasGolden Arm Award winner as thenation’s best QB. This year Cougarfans are hoping Leach can do itagain with Eastern Washington gradtransfer Gage Gubrud. With animproved defense, we will not bebetting against him.
