A piece of history was restored on June 4 dur-

ing a renaming ceremo-ny hosted by the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society at a 125-year-old cemetery.

The cemetery was donat-ed by Daniel Orcutt in 1889 before Washington gained statehood. For many years, the land was known as Lake Tapps Cemetery, but over time the headstones, including Fadola and Lappenbusch family mem-bers, were forgotten.

A hiker stumbled upon the burial ground in 2008 and referred to it as Dieringer Cemetery, according to the Heritage League of Pierce County.

For several more years, it was left unmarked, cov-ered in dense vegetation and in general disrepair, said Bonney Lake historian Winona Jacobsen.

A troop of boy scouts adopted the cemetery and cleaned it up, erecting a sign in the process which iden-

tified it as the “Dieringer Pioneer Cemetery” accord-ing to the Heritage League.

However in 2012, Jacobsen and Roger Hunt, an ancestor of Orcutt, began the task of research-ing its true history and rightful name. Hunt approached Pierce County and convinced the park board to honor the site’s historical significance and properly name it the Lake Tapps Pioneer Cemetery.

The following is Roger Hunt’s family story of the Lake Tapps Pioneer Cemetery:

My family, the Orcutts, came west from Kansas over the Oregon Trail in 1882, settling right here. All of the land around this lit-tle cemetery north of 40th Street is land that was origi-nally owned by my family.

We homesteaded 400 acres and purchased an additional 160 acres from the Northern Pacific Railroad. My family became hop farmers and at that time the Puyallup

Rod Richardson and Jim Cawley shared many things – friendship, former careers, a love of flying and even a neighborhood.

The two retired com-mercial pilots perished the afternoon of June 4 when the small, antique airplane they were flying went down in a wooded area not far

from their rural Buckley homes.

Each man lived along an airstrip that straddles 112th Street, a neighborhood of small-aircraft enthusiasts. Cawley had recently pur-chased a vintage military airplane from his friend and the two had gone for a flight that Wednesday morning. When they returned to the sky that afternoon, it was immediately clear some-

thing was wrong. Area resi-dents reported hearing the engine sputtering and los-ing altitude before it clipped treetops and crashed.

The plane went down in a wooded area north of state Route 410, in the 9200 block of 258th Avenue East. The wreckage was removed the following day and the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Richardson was born in East St. Louis, Mo., and eventually flew around the globe. A military veteran, he became a Continental Airlines pilot at the young age of 26. He cockpit career included stops with Galvin Flying Service in Seattle and an international stay with Saudi Arabian Air. His airline career ended when he retired from Boeing as a flight instructor.

Richardson is known to a younger generation as a bus driver for the White River School District, a post he retired from a year ago.

He had long desired to live on an airstrip and he moved to Buckley, with his wife Fran, 13 years ago.

Cawley could fly a plane before he could drive a car and went on to log more than 30,000 flight hours during a career with Delta Airlines. He retired in 2012, according to a family state-

Flying is part of the Cawley family life. In 1965, Jim Cawley’s father, with the help of his sons, developed the private airstrip where both of last week’s crash victims lived. Now, both of his sons are licensed pilots and work in the aviation industry.

Like his father and sons, Cawley was a graduate of White River High School.

The East Pierce Fire and Rescue Foundation has launched a new group with one of the toughest membership requirements of any organization. To qualify, members must have died and been resuscitated by either firefighters or law officers.

“But once you are in, you are one of the luckiest people on the planet,” East Pierce Survivors Society President Duane Bratvold said.

A cardiac arrest survivor himself, Bratvold was saved by the firefighters of East Pierce.

“We wanted to start a support group of survivors, but also provide a way to give back to the community,” he said.

Law enforcement was included because of the marine units on Lake Tapps and dive teams who respond with the East Pierce dive teams to incidents on the lake and local rivers.

It also recognizes the recent partner-ship between the fire district and the police departments in Bonney Lake,

Sumner, Edgewood and Milton in an AED program. Over the past year, East Pierce has provided automated exter-nal defibrillators (AEDs) for each police cruiser in those communities and trained the police officers on how to use them. With the AEDs, they can start CPR and shock a person who is in cardiac arrest without waiting for the firefighters to arrive.

The Foundation was launched in 2013 as a non-profit organization to improve

the lives of the community through com-passionate outreach services and access to public safety education programs.

“In partnership with the fire district, we will help create a safer and more sup-portive community for the citizens in the East Pierce service area,” Bratvold said.

The Foundation focuses on three ini-tiatives, providing smoke alarms for East Pierce firefighters to install in high-risk homes free of charge; underwrite the

cost of adult CPR classes; and to fund the Sentimental Journey Program, a coop-erative effort with the Foundation, fire district and MultiCare/Good Samaritan Home Health and Hospice to provide one last ride somewhere special to hospice patients.

The Survivors Society will focus on raising money and awareness for the CPR program. This important program helps in two ways. It teaches critical life-saving

skills and soon, the Foundation will help launch an area-wide campaign to encour-age citizens to call 911 sooner when they experience the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

Those interested in joining the Survivors Society, may contact Duane at [email protected]. For more information about the Foundation, please visit www.eastpiercefirefoundation.org.

Plateau were the most pro-ductive hop lands in the world. The success realized by my family, and other hop growers, attracted more and more homesteaders to the area, and by the end of the 1880s, over 100 people lived in the little community of Lake Tapps.

Daniel Orcutt, my three times great grandfather, his oldest son, Alvin, and their neighbor, Amos Crawford, were very community minded. In 1889 they decid-ed that there needed to be more infrastructure to sup-port their growing commu-nity.

• At the time it was a

very rough five miles to the nearest post office in Sumner, so they applied to the U.S. Government for their own post office and in 1890 Amos Crawford was appointed the first postmas-ter for Lake Tapps.

• The children of the area needed a school, so Alvin Orcutt donated land to the newly formed Lake Tapps School District for a new clapboard school house. That school house was locat-ed just up the road where 40th intersects with 218th.

• And the community also needed a cemetery, so Daniel Orcutt donated one acre to Pierce County to be used “as a public burying ground only... forever.”

In the 1890’s an infesta-tion by a little bug, called the hop louse, destroyed hop farming in the area and many of the original home-steaders, including my fam-ily, moved away but the next generation of settlers con-tinued to use this little cem-etery for another 50 years.

As that generation also died or moved the cemetery was forgotten and became overgrown with blackberry vines. Over time the town of Lake Tapps was assimilated into the larger communi-ties of Buckley and Bonney Lake, but the forgotten little cemetery still existed.

Then, in 2008, the head-stones were spotted by a hiker who posted the coor-

dinates on a website called Waymarking.com. This website describes itself as existing to “provide the tools to share and discover unique and interesting locations on the planet”. Waymarking does not verify information posted by its members, and when the hiker mistakenly identified the old cemetery as the “Dieringer Cemetery” nobody questioned the name.

In the 1880’, Dieringer was a competing commu-nity. It was located about

five miles to the northwest, where the Sumner Meadows Golf Course is located today. That town was named for and was run by Joe Dieringer, and Joe Dieringer was no friend of my family and no friend of the Lake Tapps community.

In 2010 a Boy Scout troop took on the project of clear-ing the berry vines from this old cemetery and, using the Waymarking website as their authority, posted a sign identifying it as the Dieringer Pioneer Cemetery.

In 2012 I began research-ing my family’s arrival in Pierce County, and I dis-covered this naming error. I could not let Joe Dieringer’s name be posted on the cem-etery given by my great-great-great grandfather, so I contacted the Historical Society and began the pro-cess of correcting the name.

It gives me great satisfac-tion to see the correct name on the sign over the little cemetery that my family donated to the Lake Tapps community 125 years ago.

Once upon a time in the distant past, cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix were hailed as futuristic and progressive because they were built around the car. Tomorrow’s cities, people said, would consist of several suburban communities connected by an “ingenious and splendid” system of freeways. Old, compact, pre-car cities like New York and Chicago

were dismissed as polluted cesspools that couldn’t get any fresh air or sunlight.

What a turn-around!

Today, in large part because of the very cars they

were built around, L.A. and Phoenix have become carcinogenic, polluted environmental nightmares, while the old metropolitan centers have become the progressive ones. Cities like New York and San Francisco have declared war on the car. So has Seattle. Local officials seem determined, by hook or by crook, to get people out of their cars.

But this will be no easy task because people in Seattle and the surrounding region have a deep and enduring love for their autos – and anytime you try to force people to do something they aren’t ready to do, you’re going to have serious problems.

Seattleites voted their last mayor out of office because he was against automobiles and was smit-

When I was in my early 20s, a father of one of my friends asked me what my goals were. I didn’t have an answer, nor did I want to think about it, but his question kept com-ing to the surface of my conscious-ness again and again. Another man, a college professor, suggested I go into teaching. Something clicked in my head because I liked learning. It seemed to fit. I set my goal to become a teacher.

Why did I become a teacher and now a writer? Another person, my future managing editor, having seen my letters to the editor about the local fire district, asked me if I wanted to write a column for the paper. I had just lost my bid for re-election to the Enumclaw City Council and the timing was right.

As I ref lect on my life, I see that chance has played a big part in it. Someone made a comment, or a suggestion, and it changed my life forever. Opportunities and choic-

es in all our lives are inf luenced by such occurrences. Our lives are often made up of such serendipitous events.

Consider your own lives. Have there been times when a word or suggestion sets you off on a differ-ent course? I’m guessing all of us have had such events that occur to us. Here are some famous people in history whose lives have changed by chance or choice.

George Washington came close to being killed by bullets several times during battles. During the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755, which started the French and Indian War, Washington was a 23-year old British colonial colonel under the command of Gen. Braddock. He

had his horse shot out from under him twice. Of 1,300 British soldiers fighting the French that day only 30 survived and Washington was one. Had Washington died, the his-tory of the United States would have been very different.

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), Swedish chemist and armaments manufacturer, and the inventor of dynamite among other inventions, had the experience of being mis-takenly reported to have died in a French newspaper obituary. It was actually his brother who had been killed in a factory explosion in 1888. The notice erroneously stated that, “The merchant of death is dead.” The report went on to say, “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding more ways to kill more people faster than any other person, died yesterday.” The report shocked Nobel enough to cause him, accord-ing to some accounts, to create the Nobel Peace Prize after his actual death so he might be remembered for something more than creating explosives.

ten with bicycles, but now they’ve dis-cover their new mayor is the same way. He wants to triple the number of city bike lanes. Well, city officials best tread softly because, if Seattle drivers feel too pressured, they’ll simply drive over those damn fool bicyclists, as is already happening on a regular basis.

A mass transit system patterned after those in Europe and old U.S. cities like New York and Philadelphia is currently promoted as a partial solution to clogged freeways and cancer-causing air. Yet. Local people would rather drive than use mass transit, as evidenced by the resounding defeat of the bus initiative in the last election. We don’t like to sit in bus stops waiting for service; we’d rather sit in rush-hour traffic.

There’s something to be said for a really first-class subway system like the one in New York. However, building such an elaborate operation in this day and age is more or less cost prohibitive. Nevertheless, Seattle’s boring a subway between Capital Hill and the U. District. And the Sounder – that high-speed train between Tacoma and King Street Station – has proved successful. There’s talk of another train from Northgate through downtown Seattle and out to

Southcenter. In the meantime, the powers that be

have apparently seized upon another tactic: let’s make operating a car so expensive and inconvenient people will stop using them. Thus, finding a park-ing place on the streets of downtown Seattle is nearly impossible and, if you do, it will cost upward of two bucks for 15 minutes. And to park all day in a lot will run you around $30. However, there isn’t any indication that drivers have been deferred by such fees.

Nor does the rising price of gas dis-courage them. Indeed, there’s every indi-cation we’re willing to pay more than $5 a gallon and, if necessary, cut back on our food budget. We’d rather go hungry than take the bus.

Meanwhile, I have New York friends who don’t have a car and don’t want one. They don’t even have a driver’s license! Generally speaking, most places they want to go are within easy walking dis-tance. How cool is that?

Of courses, that’s not especially prac-tical around here. I mean, I can’t walk from my Krain house into downtown Enumclaw every day and I can’t get excited about bicycling there. So I drive.

strangers, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lora Lundstom Clarke, in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, saved Clarke’s life. Clarke was roller blading along the

Hudson River when she crossed a street and saw Paltrow in an SUV on her way to a yoga class. They stopped to talk and because of the slight delay, Clarke missed her train to work. Had she made that train she would have undoubtedly been at her desk on the 77th f loor of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center.

When she arrived on a later train, she was in time to see the first airliner slam into Tower 1. Ten years later the two women met again. Paltrow’s remark was, “It still gives me chills, I can’t quite believe how many other people changed the lives of strangers on that day.”

I write these stories because they are

interesting, but also because it is some-times a healthy thing to ref lect on the major chance occurrences that happen to all of us that cause us to make differ-ent choices in our lives and thus change the course of events.

Contact your dis-trict legislators with concerns

Rich Elfers wrote a thought-provoking col-umn (Courier-Herald, May 28) about Mao Zedong and how the Chinese dictator “...viv-idly depicts the hazards of unfettered governmental power with no checks and balances.”

His comments elicited thoughts of the pres-ent happenings in the Washington state gov-ernment. Gov. Inslee has taken upon himself to raise the gas tax $1.17 per gallon in his attempt to control the carbon emis-sions. If you fill a 15-gal-lon tank on your car, it

will mean an extra $17.55! Emails and interviews of Inslee and his staff indi-cate he will take a page from President Obama and issue an executive order to enact the tax increase. He doesn’t want to have the issue brought to the legislature knowing it will be, and it should be, rejected.

This is reminiscent of columnist Elfers’ afore-mentioned statement about “government power with no checks and bal-ances.” Dictators aren’t the only ones willing to abuse power to force their agendas.

Contact your district legislators and express your views.

President should be impeached for violating federal law

The Obama admin-istration was success-ful in negotiating the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban. Hooray! And all the lemmings cheered.

However, when it comes to every single decision Obama makes, once you scratch the surface, you realize what a horrific decision has been made. Then you realize the world is a little unsafer and the United States looks like a little punk on the world stage.

Sgt. Bergdahl deliber-ately walked away from his post in 2009. Prior to that he converted to Islam

and made anti-American sentiments. After he was allegedly “captured” by Taliban forces, I believe he collaborated with the enemy and the attacks on U.S. forces by the enemy became more precise with their IEDs.

The U.S. military began missions to locate Sgt. Bergdahl and brave American soldiers lost their lives looking for Bergdahl (who I will occa-sionally refer to as “The Rat”). Of course, these brave soldiers would never locate him.

So, the Obama admin-istration began to negoti-ate with terrorists to get Sgt. Bergdahl released and agreed to release five terrorists in exchange for Sgt. Bergdahl. This was in complete violation of federal law which requires that Congress be noti-fied of this negotiation/

exchange. This was no surprise because, like a petulant child, Obama has always done an end around on Congress if he thinks he wasn’t going to get his way.

Then, with front boy Jay Carney, the talking points from the Democrats came out that this was a heroic decision by Obama and that Obama loves the mili-tary and that Obama is not going to leave any soldier behind. Heck, Obama held a Rose Garden press con-ference with the parents of The Rat Bergdahl. The Rat’s father praised Allah in Arabic and Obama hugged and embraced The Rat’s parents.

Since then, The Rat Bergdahl’s fellow platoon-mates have come out and exposed the truth about this whole story. Thank God for that truth.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

is no hero. He is a rat traitor that deserves to be tried and executed for his actions. Obama deserves to be impeached for violating federal law. Unfortunately, despite a smattering of Democrat objections to what Obama did, the morally bankrupt Democrat Party will block any impeachment efforts.

This whole event stinks and for political reasons, nothing will come of it. The Taliban, Al Quaida and other terrorists are celebrating the release of well-known and vicious terrorists that are now free to walk around and kill Americans. Just like Benghazi, Americans died and Obama lied and the American left just shrugs their shoulders and say, “What difference does it make?”

Cascade Water Alliance announced Lake Tapps will see the lowest-level drawdown since 2003 this fall and winter season.

Cascade owns the lake and manages the yearly water-level f luctuations. Beginning in September,

the lake’s water level will drop to approximately 505 feet. It typically rests at 542 feet during the summer.

The drawdown will be utilized by crews to repair, replace and inspect por-tions of the lake includ-ing pipes, dikes and gates. Recreational water levels are expected to return in

time for Memorial Day next year.

A meeting was held Wednesday, June 4 at North Tapps Middle School to give residents an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the project. More information can be found online at, www.cascade-water.org/lake_tapps.

Page 12: Bonney Lake and Sumner Courier-Herald, June 11, 2014

Summer is an excel-lent time to prune many ornamental trees. Among the more classy species are the numerous varieties of Japanese maples that grace many Puget Sound land-scapes. Below are a few tips on how to enhance the beauty of your Japanese maples. Some of the more common environmental and disease problems will also be discussed.

Pruning TipsIf your maples were not

pruned during the fall or winter, now a good time to start since most of the new growth has occurred. The best tools are good qual-ity pruners, a small fold-ing type of saw and some grubbies.

The secret to pruning the low-growing lace leaf

v a r i e t -ies is to w o r k from the i n s i d e out until the tree’s f o l i a g e is thin e n o u g h to dis-play the intricate branch structure that forms the character of these trees. This may require assum-ing strange, undignified and uncomfortable posi-tions beneath the tree.

The initial targets are dead twigs and branches. This dead material is nor-mal and usually snaps off easily using your fingers. Larger dead branches should be cut or sawed off. Next, trim out live branch-es and twigs growing in

s t r a nge d i r e c -t i o n s t h a t i n t e r -rupt the nat u r a l “ f l o w ” of the fol ia ge . T h e n ,

concentrate on thinning out crowded small twigs and branches.

When shortening a branch, try to make a cut near a live twig that is pointing the direction you wish the new growth to fol-low. If removing an entire branch, make the cut were it joins a larger diameter branch or the trunk. Try not to leave stubs because they will die back, become unsightly and may become entry points for decay.

Removal of around one-third of the live foliage should be the goal. Do not count the dead wood.

Common ProblemsPerhaps the most com-

mon problem is that many maples are planted too close to buildings or walkways. They look very innocent when young and small, so be aware of how large a particular variety is expected to grow.

Note that some varieties do better in partial or full shade, so read labels and plant a tree where it will best thrive.

Environmental prob-lems often cause some type of leaf scorch and leaf drop during the sum-mer. This is usually due to lack of moisture during hot weather. Usually the

trees will recover the fol-lowing year. Watering the trees during the hot sum-mer months will prevent or reduce this problem.

Japanese maples are generally insect and dis-ease free. However, they are susceptible to the ver-ticillium wilt fungus. The signs are wilting leaves followed by twigs and branches beginning to die. This fungus generally progresses throughout a tree over a few to several months, depending upon the variety. There is no cure. Cutting out the dead branches will not stop the spread of the disease.

If a tree becomes unsightly or dies, remove it and as much of the root system as possible. Do not plant a maple species back into the same area because

the fungus can persist in the soil for years.

Use Caution When Hiring Tree Trimmers

I have talked to home-owners who were horrified at the results of a pruning job – or should have been!

Unless you desire a sculpted appearance of your trees and shrubs, beware of the “pruner” who is stalking your orna-mental plants with hedge trimmers in hand.

Ask the pruning crew to explain or demonstrate what it plans to do. Do not take his or her word that they know how to prune a particular tree. Have a full and complete understand-

Firewood, Fuel& Stoves

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.

tainers. Extra drainage means you’ll buy less pot-ting soil and keep the pots lightweight.

2 Yes, you can reuse your potting soil

from last year. Just stir it up and mix in a bit of fresh potting soil. Remember to fertilize used potting soil.

3 Divide your happy perennial plants

and spread them around the garden. Daylilies, hardy geraniums, hosta and heucheras are plants you need only buy once. You can even trade your extras with other garden-ers.

4 Speaking of heuch-eras, these colorful

foliage perennials love our climate and look great all year, especially in contain-ers. You just need to know the secret – break off their tops when they grow long necks like a giraffe – and poke the stems right into the soil to root.

5 Large lawns are expensive to main-

tain. Add a split rail fence to partition off a section of the lawn, let the weeds grow tall and bloom and

call it a wildf lower mead-ow. The bees will thank you.

6 Make your own slug-killing spray

– put one-third ammo-nia and one-third water into a recycled Windex spray bottle. Spray this directly onto those tiny slugs that appear on your plants right after it rains. You can also use this mix-ture to wash the windows. (Bonus: The ammonia converts to nitrogen and feeds your plants.)

7 Never pay for plastic or other

weed-blocking materials. Newspaper at least five pages thick and cardboard under wood mulch works better and is safer for the environment.

8 Make dirt-cheap pathways, patios

and play areas by lay-ing cedar chips on top of newspaper. Cedar chips are also called playground chips and the cedar repels f leas, keeps down weeds and smells great. Cedar

repels water so don’t use cedar shavings or chips around your plants. Hardwood chips are bet-ter for mulching around plants.

9 Make compost – this is as simple as

a piling up your garden debris behind a shrub or as efficient as a three-bin system. Old compost from the middle of a pile is per-fect for improving your soil.

10 Subscribe to a local newspaper,

attend local garden tours, buy from local nurseries and admire what grows best in your neighbor-hood. When it comes to gardening, local informa-tion is the key to avoiding costly mistakes.

ing of what you expect the results to look like. Be certain that language differences do not hinder this understanding.

Even if you do not know how a tree should be pruned, still ask for an explanation or demon-stration. If you suspect a butcher job is a possibil-ity, then consider hiring someone else. Qualified, professional arborists are available that special-ize in pruning landscape plants.

Taking the above pre-cautions will decrease the chances of having to painfully write a check after discovering that your favorite tree or shrub has been reduced to stubs. Remember that a homeowner often gets what he or she pays for.

Dennis Tompkins, a Bonney Lake resident, is a certified arborist and certified tree risk asses-sor. He provides small tree pruning, pest diagnosis, hazard tree evaluations, tree appraisals and other services for homeowners. Contact him at 253-863-7469 or email [email protected].
