Speaking and listening are parts of Language Arts that are used the most.
Every person is required to communicate in public in some way at some point in his or her life. A good public speaker is not born. The only way to learn how to speak confidently is to learn the techniques and to practice…to observe speakers…and to practice, practice, practice! The Grade 6 T.U.S.C. (The Ultimate Public Speaking Club) program is a wonderful opportunity to observe, plan, and practice. The objectives are not just to improve confidence and abilities but also to encourage students to delight in good public speaking. Your child’s T.U.S.C. booklet contains a detailed description of each role. Your child’s duty for the first meeting is ___________________. It is very important that she/he be prepared for each meeting. Unprepared students may not take part in a meeting and will be required to do another assignment instead. Past experiences with this program have shown incredibly positive results and progress. Please talk to your child as the program progresses over the next few months. T.U.S.C. Meeting Expectations
Oral Presentations What does it mean to speak well in public? * Your ideas follow a logical format – don’t ramble or jump from idea to idea * You speak clearly – don’t mumble! * You speak loudly enough that the person at the back can hear you – but don’t yell * You use expression – not one single tone * You speak at a medium pace – not too fast or too slow * You pause to emphasize a point or wait for applause * You choose appropriate words to explain yourself – not “um”, “like” or “uh” * You display enthusiasm for topic in your facial expression * Your body language shows confidence – stand tall, don’t lean against the wall Active Listening What does it mean to be an active listener? * You demonstrate attentiveness ■ Look at speaker ■ Think about and try to understand what the speaker is saying ■ Don’t fidget or move around lots ■ Encourage the presenter with non-verbal cues such as nodding and smiling * Recall relevant information from presentation when asked * Provides positive feedback through encouragement and applause * Ask relevant questions if you want clarification

9. Survey & Graph: 1. Must summarize data collected from previous survey (do not just read out a
bunch of numbers) 2. Must explain if the results are what you expected and infer why 3. Must prepare a graph, or some other way of displaying the data. 4. For this role you must come up with a survey question to ask your
classmates. The question cannot ask about favourites (example: what is your favourite ice cream?) and must be limited to four options to choose from. You must create a tally sheet and survey the class on your own time (locker breaks or lunch). Once you have collected your data you must make a graph to represent your data and present your conclusions to the class.

10. Healthy Snack: For this role, you must prepare and provide a healthy nut free snack for the class based on the Canada Food Guide. Please use this sheet to present your speech. 17. Technology Reporter: 1. Must report on a new piece of technology either being used or talked about. 2. Explain how it works. 3. Identify how it will make life easier or better. 4. Tell the approximate cost. 5. Give your opinion of the technology item. 18. Science Experiment: The person demonstrating must show or demonstrate a mini-science experiment. The demonstration can convey a science idea from any area of science. Your demonstration should be practiced before it is presented to the class and should not last more than 2 minutes. Make sure it is SAFE and Simple. Please follow the steps to writing an experiment. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to find out... 19. Guess How Many…: 1. Choose a medium to small item & place them in a jar or clear container (make sue you count them first). 2. Present the container to the students. 3. Tell them the number is between _______ and ______ (example: “There are between 80 to 120 gummies.”). 4. After about 4 to 6 guess, start saying “higher” or “lower” for each guess to help students to guess closer to the actual number.

24. Performer: • Have a performance ready to show to the class. • Practice at home & bring in all of the items you need for the TUSC meeting

25. Weather Report: • Give the weather report for Winnipeg and two other places (cities) in the
world. • Provide the weather report for the day of the TUSC meeting and the

26. Poetry Recitation: 1. Choose 3 interesting poems for the audience. 2. State the poet's name for each poem. 3. Know the poem well enough to require minimal reading and a great deal of eye contact. 4. Recite the poem using good diction and expression!
