Speaking  and  listening  are  parts  of  Language  Arts  that  are  used  the  most.      

Every  person  is  required  to  communicate  in  public  in  some  way  at  some  point  in  his  or  her  life.    A  good  public  speaker  is  not  born.  The  only  way  to  learn  how  to  speak  confidently  is  to  learn  the  techniques  and  to  practice…to  observe  speakers…and  to  practice,  practice,  practice!       The  Grade  6  T.U.S.C.  (The  Ultimate  Public  Speaking  Club)  program  is  a  wonderful  opportunity  to  observe,  plan,  and  practice.    The  objectives  are  not  just  to  improve  confidence  and  abilities  but  also  to  encourage  students  to  delight  in  good  public  speaking.       Your  child’s  T.U.S.C.  booklet  contains  a  detailed  description  of  each  role.    Your  child’s  duty  for  the  first  meeting  is  ___________________.    It  is  very  important  that  she/he  be  prepared  for  each  meeting.  Unprepared  students  may  not  take  part  in  a  meeting  and  will  be  required  to  do  another  assignment  instead.       Past  experiences  with  this  program  have  shown  incredibly  positive  results  and  progress.    Please  talk  to  your  child  as  the  program  progresses  over  the  next  few  months.    Don’t  hesitate  to  contact  your  child’s  teacher  (Mr.  Whiteside)  if  you  have  questions  or  concerns.       Please  sign  below,  indicating  that  you  have  seen  the  T.U.S.C.  booklet  and  that  you  and  your  child  have  discussed  the  responsibility  involved  with  T.U.S.C.   _______________ _______________ _____________ Student’s signature Parent’s signature Teacher’s signature

T.U.S.C.  Meeting  Expectations

9. Survey & Graph: 1. Must summarize data collected from previous survey (do not just read out a

bunch of numbers) 2. Must explain if the results are what you expected and infer why 3. Must prepare a graph, or some other way of displaying the data. 4. For this role you must come up with a survey question to ask your

classmates. The question cannot ask about favourites (example: what is your favourite ice cream?) and must be limited to four options to choose from. You must create a tally sheet and survey the class on your own time (locker breaks or lunch). Once you have collected your data you must make a graph to represent your data and present your conclusions to the class.

10. Healthy Snack: For this role, you must prepare and provide a healthy nut free snack for the class based on the Canada Food Guide. Please use this sheet to present your speech. The Canada Food Guide can be found on the following website: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index-eng.php Please remember to respect the allergies within our class.

Music Review: The music reviewer must:

1. select an appropriate song(s) to share with the class. 2. share the name of the singer or group and the title of the song(s). 3. summarize what the song(s) is about. 4. share why you like the song(s).

16. Favourite…: 1. select one of your favourite things (could be food, music, an item, a pet). 2. Tell us as much as you can about your favourite thing. 3. Bring in the item or a picture of the item.

Note: due to allergies, no animals should be brought to the classroom

17. Technology Reporter: 1. Must report on a new piece of technology either being used or talked about. 2. Explain how it works. 3. Identify how it will make life easier or better. 4. Tell the approximate cost. 5. Give your opinion of the technology item. 18. Science Experiment: The person demonstrating must show or demonstrate a mini-science experiment. The demonstration can convey a science idea from any area of science. Your demonstration should be practiced before it is presented to the class and should not last more than 2 minutes. Make sure it is SAFE and Simple. Please follow the steps to writing an experiment. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to find out... Hypothesis: What do you think will happen in my experiment? (choose one student to answer) Materials: In my experiment, I will need... 19. Guess How Many…: 1. Choose a medium to small item & place them in a jar or clear container (make sue you count them first). 2. Present the container to the students. 3. Tell them the number is between _______ and ______ (example: “There are between 80 to 120 gummies.”). 4. After about 4 to 6 guess, start saying “higher” or “lower” for each guess to help students to guess closer to the actual number.

Optional: You may want to have an edible treat to share with the class, where the winner gets a little bit more.

20. Art Critic: · Share a favorite artwork piece with the class. · Explain who created it and the history and interesting facts about the artwork · Include a picture of the artwork. · Explain why you like this artwork.

21. Teacher/Staff/Student Interviewer: 1. Choose someone you know (a student, teacher, staff member, etc.) 2. Explain to them what T.U.S.C. is all about and your job this week 3. Prepare a list of questions to ask (5W’s, open ended) 4. Sample questions: -What is your career?

22. Impromptu Speaker: 1. Must come to the front and draw a piece of paper that has a topic written on it 2. Must organize thoughts before beginning so that speech has an introduction, a body and conclusion

23. Fashion File: • Share a favorite piece of fashion with the class (it could be something you

have seen, own, or created). • Explain who created it, the history, and interesting facts about the item. • Include a picture of the item. • Explain why you like this item.

24. Performer: • Have a performance ready to show to the class. • Practice at home & bring in all of the items you need for the TUSC meeting

day. • Some ideas:

o Play an instrument o Do a magic trick o Sing

o Juggle o Act o Dance

25. Weather Report: • Give the weather report for Winnipeg and two other places (cities) in the

world. • Provide the weather report for the day of the TUSC meeting and the

following day. • Include temperatures; rain, sun, cloud and wind conditions; when the sun

came up (sunrise) and when the sun is expected to set (sunset).

26. Poetry Recitation: 1. Choose 3 interesting poems for the audience. 2. State the poet's name for each poem. 3. Know the poem well enough to require minimal reading and a great deal of eye contact. 4. Recite the poem using good diction and expression!

Optional: You may write your own poem and present to the class

27. Biographer (Famous/Historical Person): • Choose a famous person to report on. • Describe the background of the person • Explain why they are famous now.

28. Entertainment Today: 1. Choose 3 interesting entertainment news items or one major item. 2. Keep the information tasteful. 3. When, where, and why did these items happened. 4. Provide pictures if possible.

29. The Environment Now: As bearer of responsibility in the new millennium, you must present an issue (along with a helpful tip) about the environment to the class. The information should educate the class about our Earth and how to take care of it. Speech Ideas:

• Recycling • Littering • Acid rain • Air Pollution (smog) • Mosquito spraying • Ozone depletion • Greenhouse effect • Animal extinction (Be specific) • Endangered species (Choose a

specific animal)

• Save the rainforest • Water conservation • Save electricity • Hazardous waste • Composting • Clean rivers and lakes for wildlife • Earth Day • Oil spills • Your choice

30. Artifact Talk: 1. Must bring something from home such as a souvenir from a holiday, or something special to you 2. Be prepared to tell where it came from, what it is used for, why it is special to you, what memories it holds for you 3. Choose an interesting object to share with the class. It could be:

• a special treasure • something unusual

• from another country • very old

When presenting the interesting artifact: • describe it • tell why it is important • tell at least one special thing about the artifact

31. Presenter’s Choice:

• Choose one of the T.U.S.C. jobs. • Inform the chairperson and the teacher of your choice.

32. Video Game Reviewer: 1. Must critique a video game that the reviewer has played (age appropriate game – no M for mature games and no extremely violent games) 2. Identifies the content of the video game without giving away the plot 3. Explains his/her opinions of the video game 4. Identifies who this video game would be recommended for, and why 5. Rates the video game on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest score 6. 33. Monologue (Dramatic Reading): • Choose a short article or part of a book that is of interest. • Practice reading it out loud at home. • State the name and author of the book before beginning. • Read this portion of the book to the class. • Don’t go over 4 minutes.
