Kusamono:
Young Choe
Kusamono refers to a
Japanese botanical art that
developed alongside bonsai.
These are potted
arrangements of wild
grasses and flowers selected
to suggest a season or place.
Young Choe will introduce
this unique art of Kusamono
through a demonstration
Learn traditional planting
methods, display techniques
and how to maintain these
Young Choe traveled to Japan to study this
unique art form with noted kusamono
master Keiko Yamane, a former student of
Saburo Kato. Creating kusamono for Bonsai
displays and special exhibits allows Young
to combine her artistic talents with her
knowledge of horticulture. Before coming
to the United States to study horticulture,
she majored in traditional painting and
calligraphy in her native Korea.
