BOOK CATALOGUE PRIMARY PROGRAM
Kids always ask me why I became a writer…The reason is simple—stories are my favourite
thing in the world.
When I was a kid, my family moved a lot and I didn’t have brothers or sisters, so I spent a lot of time
alone. I realise that sounds a bit tragic (cue the violins…) but it wasn’t all that bad (nope, get rid of
the violins) because I developed a kind of magic trick. Here’s what I did…
I discovered I could read a book or watch a movie or listen to a song, and the stories I found
inside them would teleport me to anywhere I wanted to go in the entire universe.
I could solve a shadowy mystery with Tintin or battle the Imperial Forces with Han Solo or
get Back to the U.S.S.R. with The Beatles. The stories hidden in those book covers or VHS
tapes or vinyl records (yes, I’m old, don’t judge me!) gave me the power to go
anywhere and be anyone and do anything. When I was a kid, imagination was my
superpower. So, as a grown up, I just held on tight to that power until it finally
became my job.
When I became a writer, I took all my favourite types of story-telling, and all my
di�erent influences—authors, movie-makers, songwriters, artists—and mashed
them all together with the events of my own life to create my own stories.
I guess that makes me a bit of a magpie. Magpies build nests out of stu� that
has caught their eye. I make books the same way.
It’s weird though—books sometimes don’t get as much love as movies and songs
because they don’t seem as sparkly. But when you get a good one, a book can blow
your mind, change your life, part your hair and knock you o� your feet.
And here’s a thought… if you don’t read, there are thousands, even millions,
of magical doors that will remain shut to you. Imagine that. Literally,
imagine it. Picture millions of interesting doors you can’t go through.
Bummer, right?
But if you do read, those doors open and you can go anywhere.
