    General Information on Water

    Specific gravity of water is usually given as 1.0 at 60F. However, forsome purposes it is given as 1.0 at 39.2F; the point of maximumdensity. Based on water at 39.2F as 1.0, water at 60F has a specificgravity of .999. Therefore it makes no practical difference which baseis selected.

    Viscosity of water varies as follows:

    Weight and Volume Equivalents:

    1 Second-Foot (cu.ft. per sec.) of Water = 448.83 GPM

    Barrels per day (42 gal) x .02917 = gal. per min.

    Pressure, Lb. per Sq. In. to Feet (head) of Waterft. = 2.31 x lb./sq. in.

    Pressure, Feet (head) of Water to Lb. per Sq. In.lb./sq. in. = .4331 x ft.

    Inches of Mercury (at 32F) to Feet of Water (at 39.2F)ft. = 1.133 x in. hg.

    ( )FRICTION LOSSES IN PIPES CARRYING WATERAmong the many empirical formulas for friction losses that havebeen proposed, that of Hazen and Williams has been most widelyused. It states that:

    f = 0.2083 100 1.85 q1.85

    C d4.8655Where: f = friction head in feet of liquid d = inside dia. of pipe in inches

    per 100 feet of pipe (if desired q = flow in gallons per minutein lbs. per sq. in. multiply C = constant accounting forf x .433 x sp. gr.) surface roughness

    This formula gives accurate values only when the kinematic viscosity of the liquids is about 1.1 centistokes or 31.5 SSU, whichis the case with water at about 60F. But the viscosity of watervaries with the temperature, from 1.8 at 32F, to .29 centistokes at212F. The tables are therefore subject to this error, which mayincrease the friction loss as much as 20% at 32F and decrease itas much as 20% at 212F. Note that the tables may be used forany liquid having a viscosity of the same order as indicated above.Values of C for various types of pipe are given below with the corresponding multiplier which should apply to the tabulated values of the head loss - f, as given on pages 6 to 22.

    The friction losses below are given for use in making approximateestimates of friction loss through fittings not covered elsewhere inthis book.

    They are based on the formula:

    in which; h = head loss due to fitting in feet (this is loss in additionto that in a straight pipe the length of the fitting).

    k = constant for the type of fittingv = velocity in the pipe in feet per secondg = acceleration due to gravity = about 32.2 feet per second

    Elbows or bends made up of short sections of straight pipe weldedtogether or circular bends with corrugated inner radius will have afriction loss from 1.3 to 1.6 times greater than that of an equivalentsmooth elbow or bend.

    * Values of k based on those in Hydraulics by Schoder and Dawsonand the Standards of the Hydraulic Institute.
