Book Day Our ninth Book Day at Torah Academy of Bergen County this past Wednesdayrevolved around the star of our book Spare Parts, four undocumentedteenagers, one ugly robot, and the battle for the American dream. OscarVazquez, who charmed both students and faculty with his humble demeanorand philosophy of always wanting to "be better." His emphasis on the gift ofopportunity in this country and the importance of education that a personbrings with him wherever he goes was inspirational. You can watch a video ofhis speech here.
Robotics and immigration were the main topics of the day, beginning with akeynote address by Mayor Michael Wildes, who emphasized compassion whendealing with immigrants, based on the historical experience of Jewseverywhere. You can watch a video of his speech here. This was followed byworkshops given by outside presenters on the legal journey from immigrant tocitizen, technology and prosthetics, Mexican culture and food, innovation inIsrael and the Iron Dome, and even a session on making your own comicbook. Of course, our own faculty presented the topic in novel ways, withjeopardy immigration games, underwater robotics contests, discussions onAlexa, halachic perspectives on immigration and the stranger, as well assessions on group work, bullying and empathy. A lively student-led sessiondiscussed the current immigration problem from different perspectives.
We have now celebrated nine Book Days at TABC, but both our formerlibrarian Mrs. Leah Moskovits and English Chairperson Dr. Carol Master,organizers of the event, as well as the students they spoke to agree that thisBook Day was not only exciting but exceptional. TABC Storms Capitol Hill at AIPACThis past week TABC had the honor of being represented at the annual AIPACPolicy Conference by one of the largest high school contingents participatingin the event. Twenty of our boys, accompanied by Dr. Prager and Rabbi First,were immersed for two and half days in a broad range of lectures, paneldiscussions and general sessions. Highlights included addresses by Secretaryof State Pompeo, Vice President Pence, Shlomo Gantz, live telecast withPrime Minister Netanyahu, members of Congress, lobbying with Senator CoryBooker and Congressman Josh Gottheimer. This year's Conference took onextra special meaning and urgency as we learned Monday morning of theHamas rocket attacks on Tel Aviv and in the south of Israel. Lightening thingsup a bit was a special presentation on Monday night by the co-creator of"Fauda" with a behind-the-scenes look at the genesis and making of thisblockbuster TV series.

This week, only those juniors who knew the "password" for entry, were ableto step back in time and meet some very famous people, while partaking instimulating refreshments and conversation. Mrs. Cary Reichardt, chair of ourhistory department and her colleague, Ms. Marita Poline, collaborated on acreative and enjoyable project in order to familiarize their students withimportant people of the 1920's.Each student took on the role of a famous American of the Jazz Age andresearched their life and views on certain issues Initially, the studentsreported on their research with an essay. Then, the fun could begin!On Monday, March 25th, room #1 became a speakeasy for the day. Studentscame in "dressed to the nines" as their chosen character (as did theirteachers, proprietors of the speakeasy). Guests were seated in small groupsand urged to discuss their characters' views on various issues, such as: TheRed Scare, Prohibition and the Scopes Trial. Mrs. Reichardt and Ms. Polinestopped at various tables throughout the room to "eavesdrop" on someconversations, in order to assess the level of preparation and effort put forthin the project by each and every student. Many dignitaries including RabbiYablok, Rabbi Adler, Rabbi Bitton, Mr. Poleyeff, and their associates, "crashed"the party in order to meet some of these celebrities, and hear about what putthe "roar" into the 1920's. This past Sunday, TABC students Yehuda Mazin '21, Shai Rosenberg '20,Natan Mendelson '19, Moshe Golubtchik '19, and Yoni Zirman '19, along withSTEM Coordinator Mr. Aryeh Tiefenbrunn, presented at the annual NJ Makers'Day at the Teaneck Library. Although this event is annual, this year was thefirst time a NJ Makers' Day program was held on a Sunday in order toaccommodate the Shomer Shabbos crowd. Our students presented projectsincluding an Arduino arcade game, a puzzle that was engraved and cut in ourMakerspace with a laser cutter, and 3D printed Mezuzah cases designed byour 9th graders. Additionally, some of the Color War STEM challenge projectswere shown, such as the seniors' remote control boats (representing summer)and the juniors' blossoming flower with 3D printed petals (representingspring). The students got very positive feedback on their work, and spent alot of time discussing their projects with attendees at the event. They alsoenjoyed exploring other schools' booths and seeing what types of projects arebeing done elsewhere. Overall, it was a fun and enlightening day that wasbrimming with creativity and excitement!
Alumni PrideMichael Dworkis '98 Helps Needy Jews
Michael Dworkis '98 a licensed social worker therapistworking for Jewish Family Services (JFS) of BergenCounty, has made a large effort to make the JFSfood pantry accessible and available to theobservant Jewish community. Michael has totallyoverhauled the food pantry to insure high qualityKashrut is observed year round and now especiallyfor Pesach where many families are in need of addedsupport. As the Orthodox professional on staff,Michael has taken upon himself the role of Mashgiachand taking all the necessary steps to insure a high
level of Kashrut.
Mr. Dworkis has enlisted his old rebbe from TABC Rabbi Jachter to certify atno-cost the pantry and to sell the Chametz to insure its acceptability forafter Pesach use. This past Friday Rabbi Jachter made his first visit to thepantry (see the picture below) and was most impressed. He commented"Michael was always a high quality person during his years at TABC andearned a well deserved reputation for integrity and kindness. We are so proudthat Michael continues in this path and is making a great Kiddush Hashem athis job and making a significant positive impact on his community". STORM ReportTriple G Threat Leads to STORM Victory
The JV Soccer team continued itsundefeated start to the season witha 5-1 win over the Kushner Cobras.The Storm's home opener wasdeadlocked at 1-1 after the firstquarter until Eliyah Gershon '22scored the game winning goal andBenji Grin '21 and Eitan Gulich '22added insurance goals to put theicing on the cake. The Storm's stellardefensive showing included a second
half clean sheet from Liev Markovich '21 and a goal line clearance from JacobDahan '21. The Storm will be back in action next week in possibly theirbiggest test of the season against the Frisch Cougars at the Weather Center.
