About the author: John D. MacDonald
The author or “The Executioners” John D. Mac Donald was an American writer of novels and short stories, but was best known for his thrilers. His stories are novels are full of crime and suspense. He was born John Dann MacDonald on July 24, 1916 in Sharon Pennsylvannia. He attended Syracuse, and graduated in 1937. In 1937 he recieved an MBA from Harvard University. He was later able to make good use of his education in business by incorporating business swindles into the plot of a number of his novels. MacDonald died at the age of 70, on December 28, 1986 fromcomplications of earlier hear bypass operation.
Max Cady if the antagonist or the bad guy of “The Executioners.” He is creepy, but smart and cunning man. He is tall, strong, and firm. He has a creepy smile, and is frequently seen smoking cigars, drinking, or sleeping with women. He is a World War II Vet, a Staff Sergent who had seen jungle combat. During the war Sam Bowden was a Lt, and was stationed in the same place as Staff Sergent Cady, Mel-bourne Australia. One evening Sam walking back to his barracks witnesses Cady, at the time 25, raping a young girl in a dark alley way. In court Sam testifies against Cady, and he is sent to prison. He was sentenced to life in prison, but he got out after 10 years because of good behavior. Upon being released Cady finds where the Bowden family lives wanting to seek revenge on Sam Bowden by hurting his family.
The Antagonist: Max Cady
Sam Bowden is the main character and protagonist in “The Executioners.” He is Navy vet from World War II, who never saw combat, and is a lawyer at suc-cessful firm. He lives in the countryside of Harper just outside New Essex with his wife Carol and childern Nancy (14), Jamie (11) (son), Bucky (6), and dog Marilyn. Sam has “Sandy red hair, knobby bone structure, pale blue eyes, freckles and over-sized teeth. He is lean shambling, stringy tall man of physical indolence, and ropy tougness. He is a loving father and husband, that always goes by the book. He is a kind and well-respected person. Sam and his family had a almost picture lifestyle until Max Cady, another World War II vet, who he had sent to prison, comes to town seeking revenge.
