CITY BangaloreMirror | MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2011 4 www.bangaloremirror.com/city E ver organised an event and wished that the caterer, florist and other vendors could be found in one place? BookMyBanquet.com aims to address that. In conversation with Siby Kuriakose, the founder. ORIGINS All the money that I have invested in BookMyBanquet are the earnings from two previous ven- tures — Wordz and Semkraft. The germ of the idea for BookMyBanquet was sowed while making arrange- ments for my sister’s wedding. Since the wedding was to be held in a city alien to us, accommodating guests, providing facilities and mostly importantly finding reliable vendors, was not easy. I thought if I could find all the different types of vendors (cater- er, decorator, florist etc) in one place, vetted by users, it would make planning much easier. I f ound no such solution existed and decided that this was an opportunity to create a niche service. ELEVATOR PITCH BookMyBanquet.com makes it easier for the user to plan, schedule and organise events. Every kind of service that could possibly be required for a party/celebration is listed here. The vendors are classified by the areas they serve, price range, and are also vetted by ratings and customer testimoni- als. Vendors can post bios, pictures and videos to help the customer make an informed selection. So the advantages are twofold: For the event plan- ner/layman, planning an event becomes a lot eas- ier and for the vendor, this is the best and most expansive business listing he/she has available. GAMEPLAN Our primary clients are small and medium busi- nesses that cater to the events industry. Our focus is on the vendors. We provide a platform for serv- ice providers to display their wares at minimal cost. We allow vendors to post videos, pictures, bios and mark their location on a map. In short they have a microsite which is well optimised for search engines. We also intend to provide accounting and CRM applications for the vendors to better manage their business. The two immediate priorities are get- ting a seed investment and enhancing the services for vendors — accounting and CRM applications. THE CHALLENGES Getting the word out has been a challenge. India (our primary focus) is a market where online serv- ices need to be advertised offline for maximum impact, and the costs involved are a challenge for bootstrapped companies like ours. REWARD: FAME, MONEY, THRILL? Adrenaline rush, fame, money in that order. The first one was held in 1985 and the second one concluded in Belgaum on Sunday. The next will be held in Shimoga and henceforth it will be held once in five years. The plan is, to develop the infrastruc- ture of the city or district, it will be held on the lines of Olympic games, where sporting infrastructure is developed. Permanent grounds, theatres, audito- riums, libraries, etc will be built with an allocation that will be made in advance. The second Vishwa Kannada Sammelana concluded in the presence of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and many dignitaries, including writers Patil Puttappa, Rashtrakavi G S Shivarudrappa and G Venkatasubbaiah. HONORARIUM HIKED Kannada singers of various genres had voiced their discontent over the very low honorarium being paid to them for their programmes in the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana compared to outside singers. Now, sources said the government has hiked the honorarium for local singers like Shivamogga Subbanna, Ratnamala Prakash, Y K Muddukrishna, B K Sumitra, Narashima Naik, Archana Udupa, Ajay Warrier, Jogi Sunitha, Hemanth and others. The Kannada and Culture department had earlier decided to pay them Rs 15,000 each. But it came to light that some of the singers arriving from outside the state would be paid comparatively higher amounts. Singer S P Balasubramanyam was signed for Rs 11 lakh and Bollywood singer Kailash Kher for Rs 9 lakh, it was reported a few days ahead of the Sammelana. This led to the local singers voicing their protest. Now, their hono- rarium has been fixed at a minimum of Rs 30,000 and a maximum of Rs one lakh, sources said. Bangalore Mirror Bureau [email protected] Kannada meet once in five years As the suspects were of Nigerian descent, the CCB left nothing to chance. Some 20 sleuths were posted at various exits of the Leela Palace to cope with any emergency. “Most of these Nigerians are well-built. It’s tough to tackle them with four to five people,” the CCB sleuth said. Ramana Gowda had agreed to meet the Nigerians at a coffee bar at the hotel. The CCB officers threw a ring round it and waited for the sus- pects to arrive. After the two were seated at a table with Ramana Go- wda, the sleuths closed in for arrest. It was only expected that the sus- pects would try to flee, but the 6 ft- plus Charles decided to play super- man. Oni did no t struggle much and was arrested inside the coffee shop. But Charles dashed across the garden and headed for the main entrance, where there were four CCB men waiting. Seeing them, Charles increased speed. As he ram- med his head against the glass door, it splintered and broke completely. But in breaking the door, Michael had done himself the damage. With shards of glass sticking out of his head and face, and bleeding profusely from the wounds, he collapsed in a heap. The sleuths, who had been taken aback by his desperate manoeuvre, recovered and pounced on him. “We took him to a hospital where doctors tended to his wounds. Now, he is behind bars,” said the CCB officer. Asked how Leela Palace would recover its damages, he said, “Either they have to collect the insurance money or wait for the conviction of these guys to file a civil case against them.” » PAGE 1 Sting stings 5-star hotel Oni (left) and Charles, who smashed the glass door, in police custody :  Over5Lakh 0 0 - .
