A novel 1,3-bis(p-hydrazonobenzoicacid)indane (HBI) molecule was synthesised forthe study of monolayer properties at the air-water interface, the fabrication of Langmuir-Blodgett film and the investigation of organic vapor sensing properties. Langmuir propertieswere studied by taking an isotherm graph of (HBI) which showed two solid phases. Twcdifferent surface pressures at two solid phases were selected for a fabrication of LB film thaiwas deposited onto glass and quartz crystal substrates.

UV-visible spectroscopy, Quartz Crystal Microbalans (QCM) and Atomic ForceMicroscopy (AFM) were employed to characterize the deposition quality for two selecteddeposition pressure values. Our results using these techniques showed that LB film layers a:the deposition pressure of22.5 mNm-i have a transfer ratio of % 96 with a uniform and high-quality LB layers that the deposition pressure of 9 mNm -1 . This material was also depositedonto quartz crystal substrate to investigate the response against benzene and toluene vaporsThe results indicated HBI molecule LB film is sensitiye to benzene vapor with a fast andreversible response.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) Thin Film Deposition Technique is employed to fabricate ~gas sensor using 1,3-Bis(4-imino-3-hydroxybenzoicacid)indane (IHBI) material in in=nanoscale for the detection of organic vapors such as benzene, ethyl alcohol, chlorofonn a=..:.toluene. Different number of LB film layer was deposited onto a glass and quartz cry:>.....substrate to monitor the fabrication process using a VARIAN CARY lE UV-visible, AtoIT:...Force Microscopy (AFM) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) measurement sysie=QCM is also employed to study the interaction of vapor sensing properties for (IHBI'i ~film. Our results indicated that this LB film has a higher response to chlorofonn than o~vapors such as toluene, ethyl alcohol, benzene and isopropyl alcohol. This new material gl' =

a promising result for the detection of chlorofonn vapor.

In this work we report the electrical characterization of a newly synthesized 1,3-bis-q:-iminobenzoic acid) indane containing ZnS nanopartic1es grown by Langmuir-Blodgett (LBtechnique. ZnS nanopartides have been formed in 1,3-bis-(p-iminobenzoic acid) indane 1::exposing Zn2+doped multilayered LB films to H2S gas after the growth. The evidence fa:formation of ZnS nanopartic1esin the LB film stmctme was verified by measuring UV-visib.~absorption spectra. DC electrical measurements were carried out for the films grown ir: _

metal/LB films/metal sandwich structme with and without ZnS nanopartic1es. it W;Lobserved that ZnS nanopartides cause a blue-shift in absorption spectra as well as decrease :.::.both capacitance and conductivity values. By analyzing i-v curves and assuming Scho~-=conduction mechanism the barrier height was found to be as 1.13 eV and 1.21 eV f~:unexposed and exposed samples, respectively. it was conc1uded that the presence of Z!':'nanopartides influences metal-organic film barrier height and cause a change in electrie.:..properties of LB films.

Abstract

___-:ini-thin films are very important in the nanoscale physics because of their potential-__~!LSin fundamental science and technology. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin film

.~ technique is a suitable method to produce organic thin films in nano-scales. In this~ investigate the molecular behaviour of two novel compounds, namely, p-

.i-i:- ~dobenzoic acid and (N-phata1imido) p-aminobenzoic acid molecules using their..- -'--= graphs. These compounds are also used for the fabrication of orgamc LB thin films

-;.ass substrate. These LB films are then scanned by an Atomic Force Microscopy::''Jartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique and UV-visible technique for the

a::i -:l properties. Our preliminary results show that these compounds can be well-I\IE:: ~..: at the air-water interface and are suitable materials to produce uniform LB films for'. - ~ applications in the field of nanoscience.
